      Finally the devs are experimenting and doing something new, instead of spaming the samish uninspiring boring mass produced DLCs like everyone else does.

    Jeanne d'Arc famously never killed in battle, choosing to carry a banner to be army moral rather than a warrior.
    - Jeanne d'Arc gets a canon in the game.
    Jeanne d'Arc is most famous for helping Orleans weather a siege, a very defensive situation.
    - Jeanne d'Arc's XP requirements discourages defensive plays.

    I personally would rather the devs be experimental with their game design than timid and overly safe, so I welcome a hero civ (although centering it around a specific historical figure is still a strange choice ngl) and I imagine if players end up hating it, then we simply won't see more hero civs in the future, at least until they tweak this into something players enjoy

    • @WPNSTV
      @WPNSTV ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I don't mind "hero" characters, but its just this format that bothers me. I prefer something unspecific, such as the English king. I could imagine other cool hero units, such as the Japanese Shogun or an Ottoman Sultan. These are non-specific "leader" type roles that I personally prefer. I like to imagine each match is a unique battle, and it's hard to look at it that way when there is this very specific character that I am going to have to fight every time I get the matchup.
      It's not the end of the world for me, but I still just don't like the design choice at all. It doesn't feel like it fits categorically or thematically.

      It adds a new strategic layer to the game imo. Losing a hero could be a devastating loss to battle as is it would be historically. Troops losing morale and will to fight. In this case it would just be losing buffs instead of morale.

    IMO it was a missed opportunity to bring in a “crusader” civ. Also a French variant, also focused on a hero and their few companions, but super relevant to the DLC, and also much more ‘generic’ and therefore acceptable to history fans. Instead of Jeanne, you would have a “champion” that represents the likes of one of the original Crusaders such as Bohemond, Godfrey, Raymond of Toulouse, Tancred, etc. The only difference is that such champions didn’t act as peasants so the whole villager part may be strange. Unless that part represents a ‘champion’ from the People’s Crusade

      I mean sure but you’re missing the point. Jeanne d’Arc has been divisive, so they could’ve just made it the crusader civ instead, and the work for that is minimal since all the assets are basically the same. You’re talking about creating a whole new variant civ

Is her civ technically always just in one "age?" Are things like gunpowder units available from the beginning but just prohibitively expensive in the early game? Its weird having her as a hero you level up and named after a civ meanwhile also charging into battle in plate wielding a sword which never happened.. it does not fit this game which has always at least tried to be grounded in reality and medieval combat where this mechanic never existed nor would females ever be enlisted into armies to fight in melee combat its completely ludicrous to think otherwise.
      I enjoy Warhammer 40k, Age of Mythology, even WOW where you can play as females I have no problem with that as that is the "fantasy world they devs made" and they are fantastic games.

    I don't think this is necessairly a bad idea, but i'm not sure if I like it. It is nice to expand the limits of aoe4, but the game is about advancing in ages and having ONE character ALWAYS present feels a bit too much for me. Seems a bit weird to me as well to "create" a "new" civ out of one already existing, when they could give us a real new one. There's plenty of civilitations around middle east to explore: persians, afghans, armeanian, etc.

    • @misteral9045
      @misteral9045 ปีที่แล้ว

      It kind of looks like they're trying to create commander races from StarCraft co-op mode. It could work, but there doesn't need to be a hero unit, and the commander races are dramatically different. Personally I think Nova is the best, it feels exactly like playing like a spec ops commander with expensive and powerful but limited troops. Jeanne's spawn in ability feels kinda cheap, and kinda breaks the atmosphere.

    • @Vesmir789
      @Vesmir789 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, the variant civs are about experimental civ design; it starts with a gameplay idea, and then the devs look for a suitable historical counterpart. That's why they're called variant civs rather than just normal ones. Cuz in AoE4, at least, the normal civs take a TREMENDOUS amount of work to make: the art, music, models, mechanics, and research are massive undertakings. So I'm very happy that we're getting two fully fleshed-out regular civs with all the bells and whistles, plus a number of variants that are easier to make in terms of brand-new assets, but offer vastly different game experiences

    • @misteral9045
      @misteral9045 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vesmir789 I mean, unless the varient civs have huge holes in their tech tree or something, you could just ignore Jeanne and play as regular French, at least from what I see. Having Jeanne also doesn't seem to fix any issues the french have, their vils already train faster, they already have great cav, the champions would be nice but you can't mass them. It seems like a Khan that you have to put more micro than it's worth. Not one single player gives a shit that Joan starts as a vil then becomes a soldier. Brokk and Eitri from Age of Mythology did that first and better. Aside from that, well, despite Age of Noob's efforts, she really just does look like a Khan for the French.

    • @Vesmir789
      @Vesmir789 ปีที่แล้ว

      @misteral9045 Seems like a lot of assumptions in there tbh, we don't know that much about Jeanne's faction yet. We don't know what she loses compared to the French, or what civ bonuses she has. There's not much reason to think that Jeanne and her new units are the ONLY change compared to the standard French civ. If it was just "the French but you have Jeanne d'Arc," then yea, I'd be pretty disappointed by that. But from what we can already tell, it seems that her faction doesn't advance through "ages" like other civs, so I think it's safe to say that the changes are more substantial than just "France with a khan"

    • @misteral9045
      @misteral9045 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vesmir789 Haha not really, Age of Noob made a direct mention of Jeanne being a french Khan. Jeanne will have no age up mechanics? Ok, so no tech upgrades, or they only unlock as Jeanne levels up? Good luck being stuck in second age because your opponent only fights Jeanne when they can kill her.

    To be honest, i find the idea behind this civ variant quite intriguing. However, personally i find, that Age of Empires is just the wrong game for something like this. I understand that they are proud of their concept. It's just that not every great idea fits with the overall narrative. Having this variant solely for the campaign would be much better, than having Jeanne D'arc compete against entire civilizations over the course of a couple of centuries. I'm very happy that they changed the name of "Sultan's army" to Ayyubid Dynasty. However, i find that the new name for the chinese variant is even worse than before.
    My main problem is really that they all appear in the standard battles. Having them in campaigns only would fit much better.

      Why for Villagers, who were peacefully living in their hamlets inheriting the profession of their fathers and spending their life in the small village they were born, instead of being created out of thin air from the Town Center every 20 seconds each, sent mindlessly gathering wood, completely ignoring an enemy knight killing them one after another until their king gives every one of them a direct personal order to run hide in the building that created them, in exchange for a fixed amount of stockpiled food gathered 400 years ago? Or sent building a Keep in the middle of the enemy city in the center of the battle, forcing the enemy king to resign?
      Why for Knights, who were a noble highly privileged class of military and political elite inherited the prestigious title from their fathers and leading the armies of mobilized poorly armed peasants, instead of being mass produced out of thin air in stables for a fixed amount of stockpiled food and gold and sent killing more villagers gathering wood than they themselves cost, which is the main goal of every military conflict and life purpose of every soldier?
      Why the entire army of Archers, created out of thin air from archery ranges instead of being mobilized from the peasants, becomes battle hardened veterans without even fighting anyone in exchange for a fixed amount of stockpiled food and gold a minute after their entire civilisation suddenly and uniformly transcended into a new historical and cultural era, changing their language and architecture everywhere at the same time, all being the consequences of constructing an expensive building?
      The only reason you are completely ignoring this without even noticing while you are playing is because this is a commonly accepted norm existing for decades already, while your mind is focusing on a new thing just about to become a new addition to the game.
      This is a natural part of the human psychology which makes us making very poor judgements when we don't keep it in mind and don't make a conscious effort to control it.

    What I really want to know is what traits/boni does this civ lose compared to french? My fear is that, if it is "just french with a hero unit" then vanilla french doesn't get to see much play after the dlc hits. And this would really be bad gamedesign. The goal was more civs and not upgraded versions but the way aussie drongo talks about it in his video made it seem like this civ is just strictly better than french...

It's the French with a hero which objectively makes them a bit weaker overall because you now have to babysit Jeanne who is ironically the weak link, furthermore, I would wager that this civ loses a lot of power when Jeanne isn't on the battlefield which makes sense because that's the point of this variant, to protect Jeanne and have her lead the army to victory. I personally don't like babysitting a hero so I'll pass on this variant, however, thank you for the explanation, keep up the good work.

    They should replace this Civ with Jerusalem. It's a crusader/chivalry order like the Order of the Dragon, it's a natural opponent to the Ayyubids, it's heavily influenced by French culture and it's a cohesive political entity (i.e. kingdom).
    Not sure what they're doing with Zhu Xi's legacy and I'm not a fan of it simply judging by the name but it would probably be better if they replaced it with the Jin as a variant of the Chinese and the existing Chinese civ becomes the Song Dynasty.
    The Order of the Dragon isn't bad but I would like it better if it were a cohesive political entity. As a variant to the Holy Roman Empire, the devs could introduce the Papacy/Papal States into the game?
    The Ayyubids are a great choice for an Abbasids variant!

    Fun fact: Joan of Arc was actually infamously talented as a gunpowder/cannon tactition.
    I want to say I even remember reading some accounts of her using a hand cannon when available and I know for sure her cannoneering skill came into particular play during the Siege of Orleans.
    All that said, Joan wielding a hand cannon and being a sorta "mobile siege unit" is actually a pretty firm nod to historical accuracy, just reinterpreted within the confines of the game.
    It's be particularly dope, imo, if she had an optional aura that increased the range, mobility, and reload speed of nearby cannons as that would be very on point for her irl.
    Anyway, thought I'd share. Her abilities are actually extremely grounded in reality, all things considered!

    I do like the fact that devs are opening to new mechanics in the game, even if this is something that is going off the boundaries of the core game concept. My only concern is that this hero civ be launch so OP that playing for example a 2vs2 match against French and J’Darc vs Two late games civs like Abassyd and Delhi could result in early rush, and massive win for those civs that have bonuses on early games, and result in frustration in those that do not buy the DLC and prefer late game civs. I hope that you can start sharing more details regarding this new civs and we could have an open beta to test and buff these new mechanics before the launch day. Bad speculation and bias from another games could result in a bad mood on players before the DLC arrives. Even if there is some OP mechanic, I know that by experience Relic has a right game engine to change a whole mechanic to something different they have in mind (I have seem it in games like CoH2 where they change the factions mechanics for Brits and OKW many times) so there is hope they get in the right direction if things start to go in a bad direction.

    I was definitely uneasy about the name at first, but the announcement from the devs and the info page for Jeanne's faction did a great job at explaining the intent, I think. Now I'm fine with the name, it makes sense for what the faction is and it's very clear on what you're getting. Also, I don't think it needs to conform to the naming convention for the other civs cuz it DOESN'T conform to the other civs, it's drastically different.
    Aside from that, I love how the variant civs are presented as a way for the devs to try experimental civ designs. They are built from a bottom-up perspective of creating new gameplay experiences, and I think that brings a lot of potential to the AoE franchise. I never would have expected or suggested such a thing, but that's only because the franchise has only ever given us the same formula for years. I'm excited to see what the devs do when they don't have to build every new civ from scratch and can devote that time to developing really unique new systems and mechanics. I'm personally really excited to learn more about the Order of the Dragon. A low-unit-count army of elites sounds awesome to me

    I would much rather get 2 new civs instead of these 4 hybrids that are inconsistent. I feel like the system we already have offers tons of different gameplay and paths, so maybe they could have just add extra landmark for each civ if they wanted to mix it up this badly.
    Byzantines and Japan are gonna be awesome for sure, cant say that for sure about the other 4 things.

    • @reklom2334
      @reklom2334 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like they are experimenting. having an entire civilization with several experimental implementations might be too heavy handed in figuring out what works and what doesnt (and similarly focused player sentiment will be easier to identify) and their reasoning on their update explaining why the variants are just variants makes sense even if some might disagree
      ultimately I'd like to hope this will lead to some good stuff in the future

    • @Vesmir789
      @Vesmir789 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The regular civs take a massive amount of time and effort to make because the devs put so much thought and attention to detail in them. Every unit and building has a unique model for every civ, for every age, and many also get additional unique models based on various upgrades. Voice work changes over time for many civs, including whispers and shouts. Game mechanics are thoughtfully designed to fit each civ and then implemented, and many mechanics are completely bespoke for their one civ. If this expansion included more standard civs, it would take longer to release and have a higher price point, I guarantee it. The variant civs are easier to make in terms of brand-new assets but still offer new experiences and allow the devs to explore more experimental designs. I definitely welcome something new in the franchise, where all we've ever gotten is the same formula for civ design
