This is your definitive guide on cleaning coins. I've seen a lot of videos on here of people cleaning coins, but I haven't seen anyone submit those coins after cleaning & I haven't seen anyone clean PROOF coins. So I'm going to give it a shot. This is a step-by-step guide on cleaning coins & when they get back from grading you'll be able to see if cleaning them will get you that dreaded details grade or if you can clean your coins and not damage them so that you can have a beautiful coin that grades higher and makes you more money!
This video will cover cleaning 3 types of coins. Silver, Copper & Nickel as well as using 3 different cleaners on each metal type. Ezest, Acetone & MS70 Coin cleaner.

Yo Rocko! I just started coin collecting, like 4 days ago, sry for my noobness. You prefaced this video something like “The definitive video to answer finally answer the question, should you clean your coins or not… .” I agree 100%, . To me, I figured out the answer about half way through. I need to develop my coin restoration skills to the max. You see, 4 days ago I didn’t know what a proofs were or what uncirculated meant, but I pretty sure I do now. Look, let me try to put this in perspective. I get the same impression from you in this video and other big-time coin collectors. You guys are spending 10,000 a year if not more just on getting coins graded let alone buying and selling coins you have all the ins and outs And access to all the best coins. All the uncirculated proof coin sets you have so many of them you can even sacrifice 15 coins to this video. It’s not much of a risk if all you gotta do is make 15 coins that look totally brand new and keep them looking brand by going through the motions of washing a dirty coin. Hell, one of the procedures MS 70 is specifically designed for the coin industry and seems to be accepted as a staple from all the old timers , with a simple 3-4 step process should always work if followed perfectly, you would think. Even made the pennies look brand new again. Anyways, I get the impression that when you guys go to send in a batch of cards to get graded, you’ve already went through probably twice as many coins to make that batch. I don’t know I’m gonna look up more videos but if you’re worried about your coins, getting crappy grades, houses even possible for anything that’s been rattling around in a pocket all day have a chance at getting a MS grade even a low one.
Ezest protocol, get a plastic basket to dip your coins in the solution with then rinse in distilled water and immediately submerge into acetone to ensure there are no water spots.
Just catching this and certainly interested in "testoring" some coins I have. Would you suggest rinsing after acetone? I have seen numerous videos where they did just that. ?? Thx.

Milk spots are attributable to improperly washed/rinsed planchets. They become part of the coin and can not be removed.
Really? I have a terribly spotted 64 Kennedy half. Generous amounts of milks spots on both the obverse and reverse. Naked eye visible, but also slightly disappears if the coin is tilted the right way under the light. Ill have to do more reading on improperly washed planchets. Thank you
The MS 70 seemed to work the best but those darn milk spots are just a pain. Good luck with the grading , can't wait to see. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

Thanks for doing the experiment. A properly conserved coin is absolutely allowed and can be graded. An improperly conserved coin will be called cleaned. There is no one best solution as the different metals call for different treatment. Ezest is great for silver, but I wouldn't use in on copper or nickel. Acetone is always safe but is very limited in what it can do. All three are different. Ezest is an acid -- MS70 is an alkaline -- Acetone is neutral. For copper I find Coin Care to be the safest, it is not very aggressive. Looking forward to the results. Cheers!
I would agree, you can use dip for copper but never mix with silver as the silver can transfer to the copper coin. Copper will come out ugly pink.

Works fine as was shown in vid. You just want to dip in in it's own jar or pour some out just for copper. It will come out pinkish as that is what they look like before stamping. Just leave it out for a few days to come back to normal color.@@don951

Hi buddy. I used to work recently on aircraft engine components, and we used acetone sometimes to remove wax and one chemical we used that was better than acetone, especially at removing milk spots and toning, which was called Evolve. Hope this helps as I'm sure it might do a better job as carefully removing marks

Thanks! I was told by someone else to use distilled because the companies can detect fluoride from city water but I live rural and have a cistern so maybe that’s why I didn’t get caught.
Great Thanks, a small tip, when you apply the cleaning liquid on it on a cotton bud, don't roll the bud, thenbu can see the black dirt on the bud
There's a difference between cleaning and conservation. The major grading services do some of these procedures for restoration services, they just like to make extra money.
Well in my opinion they call it restoration just so they can clean it and say it isn’t lol. It’s really just “controlled cleaning.” Since they are the “professionals” and can do it in a controlled environment. Part of this order has already been completed and I’m looking forward to the results video.
What's the difference besides the person doing it?
I have become a master at turning those Benji's into cameos. All you need is wax to cover the fields, and a very fine medium in a soda blaster. Probably took me 50 coins to master but haven't gotten a details or damaged grade after I got good.

@@rockysramblings I'm not really a video guy but it's easy to explain. Melted wax to cover the fields. A thin coat will do. Then grab the finest medium you can find for your soda blaster and start practicing frosting those devices. Heat gun to remove the wax when done. It takes a lot of practice so be prepared to ruin a lot of coins. Once you get it down they're indistinguishable from true cameos.

Thanks. My personal favorite is the MS70. Ive cleaned many and haven’t had any issues yet. The eZest scares me just cuz it’s so powerful.
my go to for cleaning is several steps, works great for silver anyway and pretty good for copper, CLR mixed with some water to dilute it some, then rinse in Lemon Juice and final rinse in plain water and DAWN ( just a few drops of Dawn. ) works great and last submission I sent to ANACS I got a 64 which was what I suspected I'd get.
You’re braver than me. I worry about strong chemicals and acids. Even eZest scared me but it passed the test still. 🤷🏼♂️

If you were to put the q-tip in the end of a straw it would probably make it easier to roll back and forth without any dragging or tension on the coin
Good idea but turns out that lightly dragging it doesn’t cause any damage to the coin. Since this video I’ve done it dozens of times and never gotten a details grade

Leftover Covid hand gels were usually 50 to 70% Ethanol and are great for cleaning both metals and plastics.
You don't drop coins in especially if you have dipped a few coins already as the sediment on the bottom as well as your fishing around can harm the coin. There is a drop well to put the coin on and just submerge or even a plastic tongs. Also never dip different metals in the same jar. Copper will come out real pinkish so best to leave out a few days to get back some color.
Others were telling me to use the basket but I had no basket included. I didn’t mean to drop the first one. 😅 good advice on the moving of metals but it didn’t effect my grade surprisingly. I thought for sure I’d get details on it.
You could have saved yourself a lot of money just asking those that have experience. Dipping 1 time other than the fact that it looks too good (no toning) won't get details as under glass you have not affected the finish. I have seen Indian pennies come back non graded because of questionable color. I sent in a barber half dipped but let it tone back a bit before sending it because it was too white for 120 years old. Now if someone is dumb and dips it again it will make the surface etch as it is an acid and will give it a steel dull look. Great content but kinda pricey for cheap proofs just to get a lesser grade company to put in plastic. @@rockysramblings

I had a proof set with a blue edge or strip my Grandfather gave me along time ago. I opened it and found a couple finger prints on them. And I know they wernt feom me, cause I only tounched the rims. I don't have it any more but I got one in change that looks like those I had opened. Wonder what its worth.
Don’t you think the speckled was from the rag when you was tapping down to dry ? I’ve heard of people blow drying them right after the rinse and not tapping dry with anything
I’m not sure which part of the video you’re referring to. If it’s those white spots, those are milk spots. I’m not sure what causes it but it happens to a lot of those old silver coins
@@rockysramblings you said after the dip all the coins looked grainy and I think that happened when you padded them down , I’ve heard people blow drying them after the dip and rinse to avoid any surface contact Even soft cloth can put a mark on it
Don't you blow on it as you will see spots later from your moisture spittle. Blowing air from a can seems to work well:)
Conserv safe and bu plus is the actual real two that used for two different purposes
With the EZ Est You didn't harm any of your silver coins, they were polished prior to you getting them.

Thank you i did try it on both hydrogen isnt good on pennies i used a coin that’s worth nothing and alcohol is great on both just like you said with the acetone it didn’t do anything to the penny either so thats good.
So, did the E Z Est etch your stainless steel sink like it did mine?
I didn’t get it on the sink and when I rinsed the coins I made sure to use plenty of water cuz I figured it may have an effect.
I’m a mechanic and I’ve used a cleaning supply called new finish aluminum polish cleaner try it let me know what you think it comes with very soft cotton compound

I bought my first 2 one once silver coins a month ago. They are from the perth myth and legends collection. I was unaware that you should not handle coins with your bare hands, and took one of them out of the protector. Because of this, it turned slightly yellow compared to the other one I didn't touch. Is there any way I can reverse this yellowing without ruining the coin? Any help is appreciated 😅
I’d try the EZest dip first. If that doesn’t work you could try the ms70

Did you rise the coin after using acetone?
Yes. I rinsed in water each time. However I have been told water with fluoride can be detected. I have a cistern so there is no fluoride in my water. You may want to used distilled water.
I just cleaned a Morgan dollar with silver polish and vigorous brushing with a tooth brush. It was heavily tarnished and now it isn't. Thoughts?
That would probably be labeled as cleaned. Does it still have luster and the cart wheel? I would imagine they’ll be able to see the scrubbing marks.

In test 3 with the ms70, on the benji, could see some hairline scratches from rubbing those milk spots too aggressively, think that will be a dead giveaway to the graders it was cleaned but we’ll see..
It may have been die polishing marks. I was looking for marks from cleaning as I did them with my loop and I wasn’t seeing them but I could be wrong. We will see when they come back I guess.

Seems to me the acetone does some things, and the M 70 does others, why don't you do them in acetone and then in M 70 and you might get the best of both worlds

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do. It won’t get a straight grade
I hear distilled water is a better rinse to avoid spotting.
I make sure to dry immediately. I have heard that pcgs can detect fluoride in the water. I use a cistern so maybe that’s why ANACS didn’t catch it or maybe they don’t have the same ability as pcgs. Or maybe that’s not true. I think it would be wise to use distilled water, but since I get away with it, I continue to use the tap water.
I buy those uncleaned roman coins so I am always looking for a better way to clean without damaging them.
So basically what you're saying is that a lot of coins come right out of the mint with polishing marks already on them. So how is that take away from the value when that is original.
Because part of the grade is eye appeal. If you can find one without polishing marks and a great strike etc, that’s more likely to get a higher grade. MS70 is the goal of every coin geek
The coins themselves are NOT polished by the mint after they’ve been struck. But the blank planchets are polished and the dies are polished PRIOR to the coins being struck. After that, no one should ever mess with the surfaces of proof coins. They are exceptionally delicate and will show evidence of any attempts to clean or polish them.
???? I can see "dopping" a toned coin but these I would never consider. The term cleaning denotes polish,friction, as opposed to liquid. Also what do you have here that is zinc??? You have silver, copper and nickel.
I don’t recall saying I was doing a zinc but I remember I was considering doing it, but after I saw what it did to the penny I figured it would be a waste of money. So if I said it and didn’t do it that’s why. Guess I didn’t edit that out.

Scratching and wear are the two major factors in grading shiny is a much less a factor.
Yes but my purpose for doing the experiment was to see if any scratching could be detected from cleaning them.

Those coins can never be replaced. The surviving population of non-fucked with specimens of 1961 proof coins just went down again so some fool could get more views on a YT video. Disgusting…..
It’s not a fair test, because you are taking perfect coins without natural aging and even wear. That is the big question, can you take a dirty 1850 coin and make it dirt free and give it some luster without removing aging.
My intention was to see if the cleaning solutions and the cleaning process would be detectable by the grading company. So cleaning near flawless coins is ideal because if any marks or imperfections from cleaning happens they would be the most detectable on a proof coin.
Answer: No. Nor should you try. If you do, you will destroy the coin and no collector will buy it from you because it has been damaged due to improper cleaning by morons who don’t know what the hell they are doing. Leave the restoration work to proper conservationist services that know what can be restored and how and who also know when to leave a coin alone.

Why would anyone clean perfectly preserved coins? They didn't need cleaning at all. And, it doesn't show that if these techniques actually remove tarnish etc.
It’s a test to see if cleaning them with these cleaners will be detected by the grading company

Since the results of this came back positive I’ve become an MS70 fan. I use it often and haven’t gotten a details grade yet.
Here is a something that you are not actually using that is easy safe and there is one other one that is actually created for use for dental teeth porcelain veneers and stuff and they even use Coins as testing for what does to the metals and be amazed what they found out and they use it matter of fact both of them two different ones to preserve and stuff and anyone is able to actually purchase it

I used MS70 on modern (gold tone) dollars… turned them dark… almost purple… ruined. Failed experiment.

Make sure you rinse that stainless steel sink out cuz it's going to clean it and make funny black spots in your stainless
Ultimately, the best of all cleanings is a toothbrush and toothpaste. I swear, the coin will be like new.

Nickel is a crap metal anyway.
"Ugly" toning should never mark a coin down in grade. (Exception is MS-70 because thats not allowed any toning.) Good toning could mark up but bad shouldnt knock down. That's a BS opinion influencing something that ought to be objective. Some people find certain toners ugly that I find beautiful.
The subjectivity of grading is an issue imo. I’m not a fan of AI but I can think in coin grading it could be helpful. Take out the human subjectivity.

How can there be such a thing as cleaned "too nice", oh brother you collectors are all hung up about so much nonsense.
There’s some people in the coin world that think if it’s cleaned it’s bad. I personally feel it doesn’t matter, as long as you can’t tell it’s been cleaned. Some coins are obviously cleaned with scratches in them. If you think this is a hang up you should see how people get on me about not wearing gloves lol
Numismatists have a longstanding preference for coins that are “original” and have not been doctored to try to make them better than they actually are by artificially attempting to inflate the grade and fool the buyer.
Also, cleaning coins is not simple or easy. In actuality, 99% of the time efforts by non-chemists who do not know what they are doing simply results in creating unnatural looking surfaces on the coin that render it “non-collectible” in the eyes of seasoned numismatists, who will now pass on that coin and look for another that has not been screwed around with by some idiot “Coin Doctor.”
So, you want to DECREASE the value of your coins? Clean them.

Yeah it is. Cuz it’s about seeing if the cleaning process leaves anything on the coins that can be determined to be cleaning marks by the grading companies. What better way to test that than on proof coins with pristine surfaces?

Rocky, as a follow up to this cleaning, do you plan on checking these coins later to see if possible re-toning occurs and the length of time when it first starts appearing?
Another question is, is EZest recommended for use on copper coins?
That first set cleaning was noticeable in the fields to my bad eyes.

Without looking at the container I believed it says it’s good for copper but they say it’s a jewelry cleaner. So I do believe the copper coin will get a details grade unfortunately. I wasn’t considering doing a third video for toning but maybe I should keep my eyes on them and check them occasionally to see if toning reoccurs. Good idea 👍🏻
