Since first hearing the 4th three years ago, I think it could be among the best pieces of British symphonic writing from the second half of the 20th Century. Gamba and the BBC Wales Orchestra perform with conviction in this marvellous upload of the Symphony's premiere recording. I love those horns.........

It is great horn writing. I just listened to her horn concerto this morning. Definitely worth a listen if you haven't heard it.

Ruth was completely unknown to my little sister, my mom, and myself. Sergio Canova recommended her music to my even smaller brother, poor little sucker, he plays the guitar the best way he can but he is more of a lover of contemporary classical music than the two of us.

Lovely symphony! The mood reminds me of Aaron Copeland's Our Town or Quiet City.
Nostalgic, heartfelt, a wistful yearning, sweet!!

Lovely at times but often weird, even neurotic. I was reminded a bit of Bela Bartok. It seems to me the music just doesn't want to be tied down to any tone or theme. The beginning of the 4th movement (andante) is actually quite moving by itself.
