This is a gorgeous work and deserves far greater exposure. Prior to acquiring the excellent Chandos disc from which the upload is taken, I'd only come across her name in Arnold's "Variations On A Theme Of Ruth Gipps" but had never heard any of her own compositions. As with Arnold, 2021 marks her centenary year..........
What a pleasant surprise (or should I say "yet another pleasant surprise", being one of many that this channel has provided) to still be able to come across interesting composers I've never heard of before! Ms. Gipps (who apparently was chairwoman of The Composers' Guild of Great Britain) seems to have a talent for lush orchestrations and folk music-inspired melodies in the vein of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Looks like a new opus for me to dig into!
I agree but don't forget Ravel and Finzi in the quiet ...
a superb composer, should be better known!
If you like this, check out her short piece Knight in Armour. She wrote it when she was 18 or 19, and it was played the same year in London by a full symphony, to much applause. I don't know why she isn't better known. Very English Romantic style, like Ralph Von Williams or Gustoff Holst.
