I only heard of Ruth Gipps last night on BBC Radio 3. Fluent and accomplished; Ruth Gipps definitely had her own distinctive "voice." A sincere love of music seems to flood through the notes . Robin Witting England

Accessible, lively music that I'm sure people would love, if they only knew of its existence.

Ruth Gipps and Grace Williams are major finds for one who loves British symphonic music.

Kind of a joke, though not a particularly funny one, is that in my younger years I read critics who declared that women composers were basically shallow and not up to male standards. As Henry Hadley so magnanimously decried a hundred years ago, "Music is a man's domain!" Well, as so much of our history is being lately unearthed as having been hidden throughout the 20th Century, so is the general truth about women composers: they are just as damn good as their male counterparts. If any good has come from this revelation it is that now, at least on TH-cam, we can discover a whole new realm of glorious music by women! Ruth Gipps is only the tip of the iceberg! Thanks for this upload and for the many more to be discovered on TH-cam!

As with male composers, it depends upon the woman.

I'm sorry I can't share your enthusiasm for female composers. Why? Because gender isn't the issue and never has been. Getting your music seen or heard has to do with how well a composer is connected to those in a position to help. So for every female composer who has been recognized, the same set of circumstances holds true for male composers. In saying that music is a "man's domain" - only certain well connected men were ever allowed in to this exclusive club.

I feel like I discovered classical music again. I had been getting bored of the old classics but now I feel inspired.

Orchestras are an expensive proposition, they are limited/biased toward learning/performing "standard repertoire" to bring in the masses who know the Germanic Workaholics (as i call them"), the Impressionists, and the Mighty Russians. We are so fortunate we can explore the rest of the music world via this Wikipedia of music.

This work has some beautiful, lyrical sections; delicately scored ones for woodwinds; and a few brassy passages. Her tonal language here remains completely accessible, placid. Gipps was a contemporary of Malcolm Arnold and studied with Gordon Jacob and RVW (Wikipedia). Loved it!

A solid symphony from another yesteryear composer largely neglected from today's concert halls. Same as many other lady composers from the same era such as Elizabeth Maconchy and Grace Williams. Never mind about what's fashionable - how about just programming decent pieces such as this. It would bring all this forgotten music to wider public attention and is so deserved of these skilfully talented composers.

Well what's wrong with Boulez... Well have you got all day?!? It's because of so called composers and the music establishment like him that leave such beautiful music and composers like this in the dark... Bloody lot... Anyway that's my diatribe for the day... And yes what a lovely piece of music.... Well done for bringing it to my and a few others attention

The bracing first movement with its familiar tune and effective tambourine, followed by the witty march with a grand conclusion, indicate a deeper meaning that is revealed in the finale and confirmed by the return of the opening movement's theme. This symphony, and Gipps' music in general, reminds me of that of George Lloyd - which in my mind is a great compliment.

Having recently listened with a surprising and great pleasure to a Lyrita cd with the Ballads and Symphony No. 2 by the (slightly earlier) composer Grace Williams, now I come across yet another fine Welsh composer I'd never before encountered. I second the very apt remarks by Chris Beemer, below. TH-cam is a wonder. Nini, many thanks.

The painting, entitled "After the Hurricane," is by Winslow Homer (not Homer Winslow), whose more famous panting on the same subject is entitled "Gulf Stream."

The more I listen to this piece, the more I love it. There is definitely an original voice there, and it’s is beautiful. I’ve liked every piece of hers I have heard so far, but this one, especially the second movement- the same feeling as Vaughan Williams, butdefinitely not a copy.wish I knew which performance this is. I don’t think it’s the new one by Rumon gamba.

Yawn. Sound like most of that music from that generation of British composers. Programmatic, accessible, but come on...a tambourine march? It all gets irritating after a while. Give me some German seriousness and depth!
