A wonderful work, beautifully organized & masterly. Gipps makes a virtue of accessibility. This symphony is English to the core, with nods to both Vaughan Williams & Holst.

A great symphony, full of strong ideas and masterful writing. This composer should be so much better known and more often performed and recorded. It seems to me that she is in no way inferior to any of her illustrious male colleagues.

I had never heard of Ruth Gipps until this post, and now I am compelled to learn more about her and her music. I am thoroughly enjoying listening to this symphony. Fantastic work. And thank you, Rodders, for affording us all an expansion of our classical music awareness.

Symphony No. 3 is nothing short of stunning. This is one of the most wonderful pieces I've heard and deserves a lot more exposure.

Written some twenty years after her first two symphonies, the 3rd calls for a large orchestra including a goodly amount of tuned percussion (used with tasteful restraint, I think). Its fertile 36 minute span is thoroughly absorbing throughout : purposefully dramatic, lyrical and featuring a lovely Theme and Variations movement which couldn't be mistaken as being by anyone other than a British composer. The last two conjoined movements are, to my ears, exceptionally and uniquely imaginative. Listen, for instance, to her handling of fugal elements : utterly marvellous.
