CABLE TV was just becoming Main stream and ***I WANT MY MTV** was a commercial to Keep MTV on the air and was also used in other videos from other musicians. since there were never music VIDEOS much at all prior to this everyone was experimenting with new techniques and styles. The computer animation in this video was absolute cutting-edge at the time. Back then, MTV was ALL music videos. The channel was meant to be a video alternative to the radio, so they have "veejays" who hosted the same way a deejay would on the radio. This format survived for several years before the novelty started wearing off and the ratings dropped, which is when the channel began to produce original content. But those first few years saw an explosion of creativity, some of it really weird and wonderful. :)

Something to bear in mind when hearing these lyrics is that they’re not the sentiments of the singer. He was a journalist before the band got famous and was good at documenting situations. One day he was in a store and heard one of the store men grumbling to his workmates that they had to move colour TVs and refrigerators whilst the guys on the TVs on the wall didn’t have to do anything resembling work but they’d become millionaires.

The irony is that there are tons of other songs, notably in rock, metal and rap music, that include far stronger and more offensive lyrics. Incidentally when Mark Knopfler (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter) realised how offensive gay people found the word he stopped singing it when he performs the song, substituting words like 'queenie' and 'mothertrucker' instead. There are a huge number of great Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo tracks. It's always worth checking out live performances because all the musicians Mark works with are superb. The Alchemy Live and On The Night albums/DVDs just ooze talent. You should also check out 'I Think I Love You Too Much' from the Knebworth '90 concert. Legends Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton and their respective bands all playing together - the guitar alone playing is sublime!
Yeah. Someone in Canada tried to have the song banned from the radio a couple of years back. Knopfler even offered to provide an alternative version with the offending word replaced, but in the end the courts threw the case out on the basis of the context in which it is used. MTV used to play nothing but Music Videos, it was a HUGE success - Helped Micheal Jackson a lot. Hit Videos are what put him over the top. But then they got the idea to do "reality shows" and plummetted... Smart management never caught the hint and went belly-up. All they had to do was keep what worked and stop doing what didn't. New Management always wants to reinvent the wheel.
Dire Straits was a phenomenal band. I believe their first album is still their best. Of course, Sultans of Swing come to mind but check out Waterline. Just incredible work. The lead guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler went on to a great solo career which included scoring films. Of particular note is the film Local Hero (a brilliantly understated cinematic masterpiece - worthy of its own look).
This song was popular in the early days of MTV. Its meant to spoof the viewpoint of guys who work "real" jobs such as the guys who move and install appliances scoffing at what they perceive to be the easy and carefree life of the rock stars they see performing on the TVs (they would presumably see a lot of this if they work somewhere that sells and installs appliances). The fact that it is the rock musicians singing the song is meant to be ironic. Make sense?

Dire Straits is most certainly the GOAT! I'm always amazed that no one seems to talk about my favorite tune of theirs... 'Wild West End' (off their 1st album). I suppose that a road trip from central Missouri to SW British Columbia (~1900 miles) with my 'Wild Best Friend' in the summer of 1979 where we agreed this was 'the greatest song ever!' had something to do with that. We nearly wore that cassette out on that trip. The background is, that this was a conversation the songwriter caught in a electronics market, two workers doing hauling jobs, talking about a music clip running on the TV's as a demo. They were complaining about the dudes making "money for nothing", and that they get all the chicks, and were mocking that lifestyle, because they thought theirs was more hard working and thus more stressful. They also used the "faggot" to describe what they saw as "gayish" behaviour, strange looking hair that maybe was dyed too, and having having ear rings and everything. The lyrics of the song are simply a portrait of some parts of the working class back in the 80's, and I find it more important to preserve moments like that. Back in the 80's, people thought "what two morons these guys are" if they heard a conversation like that, and people who thought rudely, using the word "faggot", were quite frequently found, but some knew when to shut their mouths in public, those two didn't apparently. It's more important to leave this part of history alive, and not cut it away because we don't like it anymore. Think of what would be if they would cut the parts about slavery out of history books, and the part of the Vietnam war, and Korean war, just because we don't like it anymore. By censoring and cutting out history, we are ignoring a detail that was once existing, and shall never exist any time again. It's forgetting by simply cutting out details we don't like. The totally wrong approach to address an issue.

My best friend's coool brother was 15 and had this album and if we begged on our knees he would let us listen to it! He was like "dont touch it!" lol, just like in "Spinal tap". Oh those were the days.
Everyone who reacts to this song does a double-take when they hear the language in the second verse! The irony is that there are tons of other songs, notably in rock, metal and rap music, that include far stronger and more offensive lyrics. Incidentally when Mark Knopfler (lead singer, guitarist and songwriter) realised how offensive gay people found the word he stopped singing it when he performs the song, substituting words like 'queenie' and 'mothertrucker' instead.
There are a huge number of great Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler solo tracks. It's always worth checking out live performances because all the musicians Mark works with are superb. The Alchemy Live and On The Night albums/DVDs just ooze talent. You should also check out 'I Think I Love You Too Much' from the Knebworth '90 concert. Legends Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton and their respective bands all playing together - the guitar alone playing is sublime!

Yeah. Someone in Canada tried to have the song banned from the radio a couple of years back. Knopfler even offered to provide an alternative version with the offending word replaced, but in the end the courts threw the case out on the basis of the context in which it is used. Some common sense for once!

As of a few years ago, they entirely removed the verse on the version most radio stations here play.
MTV used to play nothing but Music Videos, it was a HUGE success - Helped Micheal Jackson a lot. Hit Videos are what put him over the top. But then they got the idea to do "reality shows" and plummetted... Smart management never caught the hint and went belly-up. All they had to do was keep what worked and stop doing what didn't. New Management always wants to reinvent the wheel.
Dire Straits was a phenomenal band. I believe their first album is still their best. Of course, Sultans of Swing come to mind but check out Waterline. Just incredible work.
The lead guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler went on to a great solo career which included scoring films. Of particular note is the film Local Hero (a brilliantly understated cinematic masterpiece - worthy of its own look).

This song was popular in the early days of MTV. Its meant to spoof the viewpoint of guys who work "real" jobs such as the guys who move and install appliances scoffing at what they perceive to be the easy and carefree life of the rock stars they see performing on the TVs (they would presumably see a lot of this if they work somewhere that sells and installs appliances). The fact that it is the rock musicians singing the song is meant to be ironic. Make sense?

Dire Straits is most certainly the GOAT! I'm always amazed that no one seems to talk about my favorite tune of theirs... 'Wild West End' (off their 1st album). I suppose that a road trip from central Missouri to SW British Columbia (~1900 miles) with my 'Wild Best Friend' in the summer of 1979 where we agreed this was 'the greatest song ever!' had something to do with that. We nearly wore that cassette out on that trip. Sadly, this friend took his own life 5 months later... cementing that song as a memory with my 'Wild Best Friend'... :) For any that haven't heard this tune, search for T4Ad_J_2l0w .
If you like great musicians with catchy songs check out The Who and their song "Who Are You." They have a bunch of other great songs as well. Started in the early 60s. Their big songs hit in the late 60s and early 70s. But they had several hits in the 1980s as well.

Mtv was a phenom never heard of. Music videos 24-7 all day every day. It introduced "VJs" video jockeys like radios djs disc jockeys. If you were a young person this was the greatest. To watch music videos all day all your favorite musicians and songs.

The background is, that this was a conversation the songwriter caught in a electronics market, two workers doing hauling jobs, talking about a music clip running on the TV's as a demo. They were complaining about the dudes making "money for nothing", and that they get all the chicks, and were mocking that lifestyle, because they thought theirs was more hard working and thus more stressful. They also used the "faggot" to describe what they saw as "gayish" behaviour, strange looking hair that maybe was dyed too, and having having ear rings and everything.
The lyrics of the song are simply a portrait of some parts of the working class back in the 80's, and I find it more important to preserve moments like that. Back in the 80's, people thought "what two morons these guys are" if they heard a conversation like that, and people who thought rudely, using the word "faggot", were quite frequently found, but some knew when to shut their mouths in public, those two didn't apparently.
It's more important to leave this part of history alive, and not cut it away because we don't like it anymore.
Think of what would be if they would cut the parts about slavery out of history books, and the part of the Vietnam war, and Korean war, just because we don't like it anymore. By censoring and cutting out history, we are ignoring a detail that was once existing, and shall never exist any time again.
It's forgetting by simply cutting out details we don't like. The totally wrong approach to address an issue.

Nobody was offended by the lyrics when the song was released. People weren't as thin skinned and overly sensitive like they are today.
Well....I was a teenager in the 80s and we knew not to call other people that word. It was clearly an insult and implying that being gay was not okay. Guess I was raised better? Contextually, it makes sense in this song...but please sont imply that everyone alive in the 80 was cool with the word.
