I had the honor of playing his guitar. What people don't realize his strings are so high above the frets that every note that he plays is because his hands are so damn strong he has to push them down to the fret ! And that was why he is so clear he was truly born to play that instrument .
The entire band was phenomenal! To play with Stevie was no easy task! Stevie was from another planet when he played!

What doesn't get the attention it deserves is his performance of "Lenny"..A song he wrote for his wife. Live at the EL Mocambo, in Toronto, Ca...It shows that he isn't all shredding, and can play some really sweet stuff as well, and still blow you away with just how effortless he made it all appear...He was something special, for sure, God rest his soul.

Try "Look at Little Sister" from this same show. Great song, plus he breaks a string halfway thru and switches out guitars without missing a note.
His back up band is called Double Trouble and they consists of Chris Layton on drums Tommy Shannon on bass and Reece Waters on the keyboard
Tommy Shannon is one of the great blues-rock bassists. He was playing with Johnny Winter at Woodstock.
After Reece came on it was no longer "Double Trouble" it was SRV and triple threat.

"it's almost like jazz!" Yes, indeed. Blues, of course, but he (and Jimi Hendrix before him) played with those jazz chord structures and changes. I feel we lost so much when he died. He was at the cusp of his creative genius; newly sober and experimenting with new sounds.
Hands down my favorite guitarist. B.B King said he was in awe of him. If the King of Blues say that about you, you are a Master. I truly believe he was a Master of the guitar 🎸 The videos of him playing at the Mocambo are amazing.

When you listen to stevie ray vaughn listen to his live performances and it can be the same song but the experience is new everytime. I almost started crying the first time i heard it. I wasn't prepared. He is the greatest blues guitarist of all time. Bb King said that being a blues player is having to be a black man twice and a funny thing with stevie i never noticed. He was not only a great guitarist but a great human being that really cared about teeatingnothers as you wantnto be treated. Him and buddy guy were best friends. He use to hang out with albert king and the likes of albert collins and johnny copeland and many other great blues players. I think they all would have said ste ie took it to another level and he did everytime he performed.

His last show.. i won w tickets from WLRW 94.5 in Champaign Illinois... all my other musician friends which was metal heads.. classsic rock.. hard rock as i was.. none of them ever heard of stevie ray Vaughan.. n i was like WTF. WTF.... WHAT? no i couldn't get 1 of them to go with me so i went 3 hrs there by myself n saw the greatest live show ive ever seen to this day.. n ive seen Elvis Presley.. tom jones.. willie nelson.. to Ronnie James Dio.. to Boston to james taylor n even slayer n slipknot n korn... anyways ive seen it all, blues down south to boz scaggs to van halen and me personally... no one can touch STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN'S show! SRV has been considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all-time. He was self-taught and it is such a shame that he died at such a young age. I can only imagine what would it have been like if he was still jamming today. Now he is rockin’ in heaven.

I remember as a teenager, I had SRV cassettes and played the hell out of them, But it wasn't until I matured that I came to realize the level of skill he had that was above the highest level.
I feel exactly the same way being 47 now and listening to SRV growing up I wasn’t amazed but as I got older and wiser I realized SRV is the guitar god.

This is a Hendrix song. Stevie learned from listening to the old black bluesmen from the Mississippi River delta, Chicago & Texas. Learning to play from their albums. But Jimi Hendrix was his idol. "Texas Flood" please.
Awesome that you acknowledge the greatness of the bassist Tommy Shannon. He pretty much invented the mixture of Blues/Rock bass playing; that nearly growl that uses a lot of walking runs. He actually played at Woodstock with another guitar great, Johnny Winters.

Stevie grew up in Dallas but SRV was made in Austin, TX or ATX to most. We were blessed to enjoy him but for a short while yet he still blew us away. RIP Stevie

Even when he was famous, he still went n played at a small club in Texas, still went to his favorite bbq shack lol... ALL of THAT stuff!! He was a truly down to earth kind hearted person!!
Stevie played what I call jazzy blues. It's a shame that he didn't get the recognition he deserved until after he died.

First time I heard this was in 1973 when it first came out on KMET in Los Angeles. The next time was later that afternoon after I bought the 8-track and put it in my 57 Chevy to play.

Stevie Ray was awesome in this cover of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. The 1st 1/4 of the song he stays pretty faithful to Jimi's version (with a bit more hop & swag). By the solo following the 2nd set of verses, he takes off into his own territory. So it's a great tribute to the original while establishing his own prowess. Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" & "The Wind Cries Mary" display Jimi's awesome skill & taste.
He was ONE of THE BEST that ever lived!!! SRV!!🌹 Yes he could make it talk, n EVERYTHING else!!!💋 I believe he's in the "27 club" of famous musicians....it's a sad thing to be a part of!!😥

SRV was indeed influenced by jazz. For a totally different feel, you might like, "Riviera Paradise." It was recorded in one take, and it became the last track on the last studio album SRV released before he died. This is a thoughtful reaction. Nice video.

I read that people used to say that Stevie never played anything the same way once! lol It's no wonder Shannon and Layton stared at Stevie constantly, looking kinda scared. Everybody was much more relaxed after Vaughan got sober. There's a video of them on Austin City Limits that shows the group's appearances before and after Stevie's rehab. The difference is quite marked.
You have to watch Stevie Ray Vaughan-Texas Flood-Live at the El Mocambo! He plays with his fingers, not a guitar pic and he uses 12 guage strings.
That uptempo style of blues is called Boogie Woogie + traditional Texas blues ( Texas Boogie). He learned at the lap of the greats like Lightnin Hopkins and T-Bone Walker. He definitely elevated the style into a whole new beast.
SRV is so outrageously good that no-one really talks about the rest of the band members (Double Trouble). Chris Layton on drums and Tommy Shanon on bass tight AF and totally locked in with SRV. They could jam continuously forever, until they dropped. First saw SRV live at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, 1985. Was touring with Albert King, one of his main influences. They played 3 Jimi Hendrix tunes (Voodoo Chile Slight Turn, Third Stone from the Sun, and Little Wing). Hendrix was another major influence. But Jay, SRV rose above the influence. He named his guitar "The One" and said if it were between his wife and the guitar, the wife would have go. His brother Jimmie gave him that guitar when Stevie was young, and it was with him until his death.

No man. Jimmy didn’t give that Strat to him. Stevie picked it up at a guitar shop in Texas he used to hang around. It looked like a piece of junk when he got it but it was made for SRV ! He got it in the mid 70s.

Fun facts about SRV:
He used the strongest strings he could find, and he broke those strings regularly.
His guitar was custom build by him he used parts from several makes and models to make it do the things he wanted to do.
He gave his favorite guitar a name, “First Wife”.
His crew said he absolutely abused his guitar and his crew were experts at repairs on that guitar.
His band had to be on their toes to keep up during live shows because he would go off on his own and they better be able to keep up.
If you can find the dvd “live at the el mocombo” the two guys supporting are “double trouble” Stevie is a bluesman but he could play Hendrix like no one. “Texas flood”,Pride & joy”

When Stevie and Jeff Beck toured together they held their tour rehearsals at Prince's Paisley Park. I don't know if he ever took the stage with them on the tour or not though. I'd like to know if anyone recorded those sessions.

if he had not most often inhibited himself to only das limited compositions/playing techniques
of Blues music that possibly he could have become 1 of das 100s of Master Guitarists

Stevie and Jimi Hendrix, two of my favs, loud and proud. His guitar work copies Hendrix to a tee. If you get a chance and have equipment to do it, listen to this song side by side. Both were guitar masters. I was living 30 miles away, the day Stevie's helicopter crashed.
