If you like Sting doing that, you ought to see him (it's on TH-cam) sing message in a bottle all by himself on stage at the Secret Policemen's Concert (for Amnesty International).
Ive seen him live, twice, in 1986 and 2011 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He really is this good and better besides. My ears were stunned at that live show.
Ive seen him live twice. In 1986 and 2011. And if he ever goes on the road I will see him again in a heartbeat. True story my friend saw him jamming at the local pub here in Melbourne in 86 on his day off. He had a couple of guys from the band with him. I wanted to punch my friend in the throat.
Along with the Queen set, this was a standout. We weren't lucky enough to get tickets for Wembley, but watched the concert from a beach bar on the isle of Jersey in scorching heat, with booze on tap, and a dip in the sea just yards away. I could replay that day over and over again, would sell my soul for it. Unforgettable x

I thought U2, Dire Straits and Queen were the standouts at Wembley. U2 changed the tone of the day when they came on and played "Sunday Bloody Sunday", they were the first act that day to have real weight and presence on stage. Dire Straits had the best musicianship, and gave the tightest performance of the day. Queen, well they had Freddie, even though he wasn't at his best vocally, and the band played good, but nothing out of this world...it was all about his showmanship, and onstage charisma to involve the crowd. Ultravox, Sade and Nik Kershaw played very good sets also.
@@jesineri1213 I was watching it live. Queen stole the show, hands-down. There were other good sets - this one in particular as well as U2s set - but no one rocked it like Queen and that was known long before any movie.
@@jesineri1213 My meaning is quite clear. And no, no one says Paul Young stole the show. But even those who participated said Queen did. Elton John said that to them after their set and the organizer, Geldof, said they were absolutely the best band. Thanks for playing, better luck next time.
I remember playing Dire Straits in the car and my friend said his Dad had got all their albums. I was surprised as his Dad didn't really strike me as the music loving type. I was like "Does your Dad like Dire Straits?!" and he replied "Well.. everyone likes Dire Straits".

The young generation has MTV everywhere now, but this is not the same epic MTV than it was back in time. But I still keep listening this song from time to time - to me this is the best version of the song - it has so much energy, and really love this song!
If I had a time machine, I’d love to just visit this perfect celebration of music. I was born just 2 years later but this is still my favorite concert - one I was born too late for. Between this & Queen, I’d be in heaven.
I was born 1 year later. This is my kinda music. I listen to the same stuff my parents used to and still listen to today, all the good old stuff! It's sad that we missed those times and we can never get it back.
I was born in 79 so I was a bit too young to appreciate the genius of a lot of musicians of the early/mid 80s. I’m so glad I discovered them later. Sting is my favorite of all time and Mark Knopfler is a freaking beast. I always feel like I was born 10 years too late.
I was about to comment that hahaha, I mean.. Mark already looks 80's enough, with his headband and all... but Jack (Rhythms) just took it to the next level
I'm so old I saw the Temptations at Disneyland in the early "70's. I got to go to so may epic concerts. I've got all of you youngsters beat, I was born in the '40's.
Dire Straits have been acknowledged as one of the most intelligent and original bands of their era. As the creation of Mark Knopfler, they successfully blended blues-based influences along with country and rock into an instantly timeless mix of atmospheric album tracks, combined with populist, catchy and massive-selling singles. Although they will rightly always be remembered for their sixth studio album, Brothers In Arms, there is so much more to discover in their discrete, influential catalogue.
Whenever I talk to people about favorite bands I mention Dire Straits and I never get a reply from anyone! It’s like a lot of people don’t really know like you said how they have such a great catalog of music. Most people only know this song and sultans
I’m 52 years old, and I couldn’t disagree more. We have a lot of great music, of course, but we also had a lot of real crap that no one remembers or talks about. And that’s true of every era. The 60s have the Beatles and The Who, but they also had the Doodletown Pipers. The 70s had the Eagles and Led Zeppelin, but they also gave us the Osmonds. In the 80s we had Van Halen and Dire Straits, but we also had vanilla ice. Today there are some truly amazing bands like Tame Impala and Warpaint. The reality is that every decade produces a small amount of great music and a ton of crap that is quickly disposed of. But everyone believes that the music they were listening to between the ages of 15 and 24 is the best music of all time because it’s the soundtrack of their lives. It doesn’t matter if you were 15, 50, or 80: the music of your late teens will always be at the top of your playlist.
It gives me energetic and nostalgic vibes. I used to hear in the Intro/Outro of the Egyptian TV show Mawaaqif wa Taraa'if (Weird and Funny videos) back in the 90s.
the most underappreciated guitar riff of all time. Most people can't grasp how impressive this riff is and is always below the more common known riffs which is sad cuz this riff is leagues above any other riff that has been created.
@@aceman6005 That is your opinion. Back from the Dead is one of my favourite songs. The guitar riff is better than anything that came from the classic rock era
What I enjoy about watching this is that you can tell that Knopfler and Sting and the rest of 'em are having fun. They're smiling at each other and just having a damn good time. This song is legendary, as are Knopfler's guitar skills.
I was driving a tow truck at 19 years old in Mission Valley California when this happened and I caught parts of it throughout the day! Today? I am 58 in my bedroom office in Shoreline WA laughing clapping and smiling!
Live Aid was probably the best concert ever. The Who, Queen, Dire Straits, Tears For Fears, Bowie, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Sting, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Judas Priest, Hall and Oates, just some of the acts. I'd be keeping my ticket stub from that concert anyway.

Not really. While finger style playing is less common in rock, many country and jazz players (Wes Montgomery) do amazing things without a pick. The same goes for players like the late Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Lindsey Buckingham, and Jeff Beck. Of course, classical players use only their fingers.
I agree. He's said that it's easier and faster to use a pick. Many times when he's using a pick, he uses the other three fingers. Sometimes it's pick only and sometimes it's finger picking. He uses the tools he needs to get the sound he wants. He's not an average guitar player. Willie (there's only one Willie) Nelson also uses pick and fingers. Check out Leo Kottke, Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, Roy Clark, etc.
It actually makes sense. The original song was written to rub it in the faces of less successful people complaining about musicians getting to be rich. So it only makes sense that this song is played at a charity concert, to rub it in the faces of the people who complain about giving money to people who need it.
@Dual Shock "it's hilarious having the idea to play Money For Nothing at a benefit concert." - Not really, provided your attention span extends past the song's mere title...
You may be over-thinking this. Back in the day Money for Nothing was just a song about some t**t being unhappy about a rock band making money out f their music.
Never to Be repeated again in History.... This was Monumental Music History... No Music Groups Disrespecting Each other.... Every body Working together.. no Egos. in this Concert !!!! Awesome
I think this is the best version of this song I've heard. It is simply amazing. I love when the main riff starts in this version - you can feel the energy in the stadium.
except that Sting forgets the lyrics at 3:48. He starts to sing "Custom kitchen deliveries" instead of "We got to move these colour TVs". Knopfler gives him a look. Kind of funny. No one is perfect, even Sting.

They hired a session guy to replace all his drum tracks on the songs other than the intro to money for nothing. Having to live that down would have been rough for me, to say the least
as the drum sounds of Van Halen, another level.

Paulo Silva But just think if they had 20 background dancers, massive light shows and pitch perfect like all groups now use. All of that is just to cover up the lack of talent in today’s performers.

I'm just amazed at Sting's voice quality. Forget live autotune, personal computers might not have made yet. 0:45 Comes on stage, casually stands there, turns around and somehow delivers the most perfect notes. Fufufufu

If you like Sting doing that, you ought to see him (it's on TH-cam) sing message in a bottle all by himself on stage at the Secret Policemen's Concert (for Amnesty International).
Yesssssshhh?

@DavidRachlinMLIS i dont think so
I’m 52 years old, and I couldn’t disagree more.

I think it needs to be more appreciated that Knopfler does all this WITHOUT a guitar pick. Insane really.
Not really. While finger style playing is less common in rock, many country and jazz players (Wes Montgomery) do amazing things without a pick. The same goes for players like the late Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Lindsey Buckingham, and Jeff Beck. Of course, classical players use only their fingers.
Space Jockey but usually guitar riffs like this playing with only pick, and how Knopfler does the same with his fingers - its cool
He never uses a pick. Well most of the time

It actually makes sense. The original song was written to rub it in the faces of less successful people complaining about musicians getting to be rich.
