I have a 1985 635CSi, and I did an.. accidental "muffler delete"..
I left my house one day and a few minutes later, I noticed that my exhaust was a bit louder than usual. So I got to where I was going (thankfully not very far) and decided to check my exhaust. Lo and behold, my muffler had broken off of the rest of the system and was only being held on by one hanger. The section that was attached to rest of the system had seemingly rusted through and broken, then scraped against the ground 'til it wasn't even recognizable. I removed it, threw it in my trunk, and that's how my car has been since then.
Bavarian Banshee My dad has an 87 M6, and it sort of has a muffler delete too. Big hole in the muffler. It's gonna get an entire restoration.

Bavarian Banshee I am shocked that no one mentioned that you should have the pipe extended beyond the back bumper. You don't want to get carbon monoxide poisoning!
350$ for a muffler delete if you can weld yourself it's like 30 bucks lol
The polished tips alone cost significantly more than $30.
I didn't know you had those I just thought you got a pipe that went from the beginning to end of your muffler
***** the previous owner of my m5 did it himself, ended up not attaching a single hanger after the rear cross member, so it was rattling really bad, i had to take it to a shop and get it fixed for $120, so i think 2 hours of labor is fair. $350 is still alot of money.

Steve Nottingham removing mufflers wont cause poor gas mileage... its all the throttle input you now use because it sounds so awesome.

Do you need to straight pipe it after you cut the mufflers off? or can you just leave it as is? and can you take the mufflers off without sawing? just bolts and nuts?

I am in the uk. I have given my car in to delete the cats and i was advised my MOT will not pass the emissions test and i will have to get it waved, BUT everyone is saying it sounds way too loud and they regret it. So am I making a mistake?? So confused right now!

sounds awesome :) i have a complete supersprint exhaust manifolds and their cats on my m5 with the xpipe instead of the original resonator , would it be too much to remove the back exhaust and to straight from x pipe ?

I have never done this before, can someone explain how I would do this on the same E39 M5? Is there a part for this car I can swap them out with or is it a custom welded job?
Subscribed! I actually ran muffler delete and x-pipe but the drone was intense. X-pipe is still there, but the stock mufflers went back on for now.
By the way, I always thought it sounded more like a t-rex getting strangled by a pack of mountain lions. Down low (3k RPM or less) you'd swear an earthquake was breaking ground under you.

Took down all four of my catalytic converters with an off-road X pipe and it sounds sweet. No emission testing here in southern indiana :)

I read that it was illegal in California (where I live) partly because it puts the car over the decibel limit, is this true? Also was it hard to find a shop that would do this for you?

We just straight piped our E36 V8 drift missile but it is waaaaay too loud and savage lol. We got a one peace pipe professionally bent for $40 so no welds, no clamps, its beautiful but still not sure if we want to keep it that way as its too much cop attention. We will put a video up in a few days on that so you can check it out and see what i mean. In any case awesome video! love the straight pipe sounds :D

+Vince Hodge May as well leave the cat, or get a high flow cat. Deleting it runs the risk of failing emissions tests.
No emissions here.. but I'll space out the o2 sensors so I don't get an annoying CEL.
