Great cars!! Have owned both cars throughout the years. The one I missed the most is the BMW as am still trying to find a similar spec to mine with low mileage!! I think it’s the best M5 ever built. The guy who sold it to me showed me how it was to be driven properly. He was a British touring car racer. He said to get the full v8 benefits, you must leave it in third gear until the stirring feels lighter before changing into fourth, as most of the low down grunt is generated in third gear!
@@skylined5534 yes. You also don't need to have owned any car to recognise that for the unintelligent waffle it was. Most of the low down grunt is generated in third. Feel free to hang your hat on that idiocy all you like chump.
If you want all the V8 benefits, take it to a track that has some longer straightaway sections, but for daily driving, make sure the engine is up to temp and get to a road with some nice sweeping bends and some long straight stretches of road and you'll make great use of all 8 cylinders. Rev matching these beasts is great fun as well. Also, try launching (hold revs at 1500-1800 RPMs, drop clutch) and once you regain traction, throttle to the floor, shift at the wonderful 7000 rpm redline. Mine redlines at 7400 due to the tune and has top speed limiter removed so she'll go 300km/h +. Getting there will certainly require full power 😁🙏👊

@@ApothecaryTerry It needs an SMG transmission and a twin turbo induction system as well.
@@itIsI988 Very good point! Also the grille is far too small on the E39. Bigger is definitely better. I'm sure Frank Stephenson once said that a grille should always be bigger than any deer you might hit.
He said to get the full v8 benefits, you must leave it in third gear until the stirring feels lighter before changing into fourth, as most of the low down grunt is generated in third gear!
lol, dear god that was some bullshit.
@@Jaredscott89
Based on all your years M5 ownership?
what do you mean by ''stirring feels lighter''
Finally - a proper drag race . The good old days when no computer change the gears and if you miss it u lose it . Yeah, kind a reminder for how it was once upon a time 🔥
Love it .
A little example of exception for "No replacement for displacement" ... I'll take the Bimmer, thanks 🤗❣️
120k for a datsun almost dropped my mug of tea.
lmao, only a moron would spend 120K on a datsun lol.
I'd never spend 6 figures on a GTR. With that kind of money, I'm buying premium such as a Porsche or a high end high performance BMW.
M5 e39 still a legend
One of the best Battle in the last Week's 😍💥😍
Such a nice example of each car. Almost feels bad to use these relics in this day and age where parts are becoming so scarce. I love the S62 motor but that R34 is just such a rarity in this day and age and the color is so unique even if its overhyped.
that was pure fun. those jerky gear shifts. very exciting close runs!
For such a huge difference in HP, skyline performed incredibly well
A 4 door family sedan, manual gear box, 265 kg heavier and rwd m5 did its best. That nissan is a proper sports car
@@joeljohnjacob6246 R34 coupe and ER34 sedan have the same wheelbase🤷♂️ And BMW has 2 more pistons and 2.3 (!!!) liters more volume. Not surprisingly, after about 60 mph, he will start overtaking
@@GHXST21 usual r34 fanboy knowing nothing about cars lol
@@joeljohnjacob6246 R34 is sooooo overrated, price difference is crazy
@@GHXST21 R34 is a turbo car, fair comparison.
As an R34 guy, this hurts. But I always knew them Germans have better performance stock. That M5 is so beautiful ❤️
Hurts??? Why??? Nissan was head to head with bmw!!! 400hp vs 280hp thats so sick
@@Piotrek4500 We all know the R34 had around 330hp stock, so the difference is pretty damn even, considering the weight of the two cars.
@@Piotrek4500 sport car was head to head with a family car 😂
@@Piotrek4500 the R34 actually has around 320hp mark but due to a gentleman's agreement in Japan they rated every performace car at "280hp" so it is actually disappointing, although it did really well still doesn't justify the price tag at what they selling for now.
@@Piotrek4500 That bmw is 235 kg heavier, its a 4 door and manual, both are great
Great race the r34 GTR is the best car I ever see, please do another race with that car 🎉
That r34 is literally a piece of art🥵🥵🥵....especially in that blue shade❤️
i'm a bmw fan, but you can't beat the sound of an RB its so good
It literally sounds like generic 328i
You can clearly see how races back then were hard work and winning was a matter of skills also. Quite fun I guess.
Always loved e39 cause always loved e46 but since I've owned a e39 the love for them just hits different, u juss have to own one to really appreciate it
Hey yo matt! Great video! THE R34 IS MY DREAM CAR! good content as always!
The BMW won by a margin but that metallic blue skyline is damn gorgeous. BMW looks also good tho + it has 4 doors.
Woooooow, super idea on this race 🔥😍
I'd still have the GTR but but but just as I've always wanted one and it's so iconic. Even though the M5 is a much faster easier day to day car. Both completely different, both stunning cars! Great wee video guys.
The R34 looks bloody stunning. I think one of the best looking cars ever made.
@ALPHA idk about all that, what exactly makes it one of the "best overall cars"?
@@yes-gs2rd because its an r34
@@vexx1580 Yeah what about it though
@@yes-gs2rd i guess, at the time it was the best car you could buy for its pricetag
@@alidude_ Was it? It was still like 70k usd or something for a gtr? I would consider A LOT of cars for cheaper that were better within or close to the same era... like what makes the r34 so much better then the other cars in the same period??? It certainly wasn't performance or handling or anything lol...
That M5 is quite a sleeper compared to the R34
BMW is a sleeper compared to that datsun rice rocket.
Two of the most beautiful cars ever made, truly timeless beauty
The 5 seater E39 with a naturally espirated engine is a work of art.
Beautiful sound, beautiful body, great performance.
I prefer the M5 but even I could see that the 50mph rolling start (assuming BOTH cars had to be) in third gear was unfair to the Skyline. These are both iconic cars and I would love to be able to have both of them!
yeah, 3rd gear rolls in nissans usually always result in a loss. its just out of the usable power band. Nissans thrive in digs/2nd gear rolls.
It still lost even from 60 tho. And the roll from 2nd gear too.
Sam is officially the best co-host/guest driver ever on CarWow. He and Mat need to do all the races against one another. Great personality, even better driver, and knows his shit.
Yianny is so fun to watch
The most perfect car BMW has ever built ❤️
absolutely love both these cars. That R34 in that colour is perfect
