Tremendous advice on posture, I’ve struggled with many misconceptions on the set up, this is one of the best online channels for golf instruction imo, thanks.
Hey JKM, this is some of the best golf content on youtube! Seriously, these are the ONLY videos that have given me a systematic understanding and pathway to improving. Keep it up! What sucks about youtube is that if you're not click baiting or keeping viewers "entertained", you won't get the viewership. But to me you're providing massive value to my game. PLEASE keep it up. I would love to see chipping, putting, and course management videos on your channel. Also I plan to take online lessons with you sometime in the future. Keep going!
Just watched your video but previous week I worked out my incorrect posture was causing slicing and pushes. I did a particular posture move that allowed my hips to much easily rotate to 45 deg and get into my ideal power position including hands. I had been struggling. With this change, i was able to hit most fairways off tee and shots onto green instead of to the right, won my social club comp game by 6 strokes. So good posture is very important as for me difference in good consistent golf and poor golf.
Thanks! I'm just starting out and want to correct all my issues before they become a habit. Found your videos through the golf fix app. Its pretty cool.
This is the first time i've heard of moving your hand position up and forward to make your club face appear to be level. I have been doing that for a while now. Definitely will stop worrying about the club head sitting level. Thanks!!!
Excellent video, Sir. I have been playing for 35 years and it's eye-opening to realise my posture is almost exactly like your 'most common' bad set-up - too much knee bend, leading to lack of hip bend leading to too much upright at impact limiting my ability to rotate. Definitely gonna work on your drill. Cheers!! (new subscriber now)
I love this tutorial! I’ve been bringing this up in a few uk golf channels and never get a 2nd thought but in my mind correct set-up and posture is fundamental and can eliminate poor takeaways, swing paths, club delivery, ball striking and, to some extent, club fitting! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Excellent content and your delivery is spot on too!
Jonathan thanks for the suggestion I will work on applying those recommendations and see if my swing swing can benefit from the change. I’ve been working on my posture for many years now and have a fairly comfortable setup. My primary goal is stability even when the body is transferring weight during the course of the swing. The unmentioned factor is the club head. Because of centrifugal force, the club pulls the body away from its established center. This causes weight to end up on the toes or the ball of my feet. By then the footwork sequence will be off and affects the swing plane, and ultimately the shot result. The finished position of my right foot would be off or a curled position instead of the toe on the ground and the heel perfectly above it. The best setup for my swing is also understanding proper footwork. If my posture is off, I end up on the ball of my foot and its always a miss right. If I use to much heel to counter the opposite force generated by the club head, the the miss is left. The perfect setup for me is the weight evenly distributed between ball and heel and at the finished position, on the left heel edge.
I personally felt that arching the back just to "get into the posture" has the potential to cause me back injury. I feel the soreness around the arch area when I get into this posture and I can't sustain it for long. Thank you Jonathan for debunking the myth!
🤯 I've struggled with balance during my backswing since I've started playing golf again. I squat lower to "help" with my balance and put most the weight on my heels. It was a minor "fix" but my weight would tilt forward a lot. I tried the wall drill and I can feel the weight in balls of my feet, not my toes or my heels. I'll keep practicing this before I hit the range. Thanks, my posture is already improving
Just wanted to give you a huge shoutout and thanks man. Seriously helping me adjust and adapt my game. Just starting plying this year and I’ve learned tons through your videos man. Much love brother. Appreciate these videos
Good video. I find myself more attentive to getting in the right posture now, flaring my feet, getting a strong grip than I do about taking a bunch of practice swings.
@@JKMGolf Watched two of your vids on that & I noted that my driving improved considerably last year with S&T. I used to have an exaggerated forward press meaning my head was too far forward. I think I overinterpreted the weight forward idea with my driver. With driver I have a more closed stance than with my irons where it is a slightly closed stance. The idea of shifting your hips forward faster with the driver resonated. I think I was guilty of shifting too fast with my irons too & rushing the downswing trying to kill the ball. So I tried to slow down the tempo somewhat last year. Now I just say "smooth" in my mind, do a couple of waggles & then swing.
Really good tips. I did the wall drill and immediately found out that my feet were really far out from the wall. I look forward to foing to the range and trying the revised stance. Cheers
Hi Jonathan. Really like your channel and approach. Can you help me ? I have occasionally hit that sweet shot off iron (or driver/wood) face that feels effortless and launches with nice arc and (unexpected!) power. But I often set up with face at sweet spot, then end up hitting off heel. I now realize at impact I extend, and so started backing up an extra inch which is crazy but sometimes has really paid off. How do YOU determine how far to stand back because simply facing ball even with correct posture doesn’t mimic my extension of club face at impact. THANK YOU.
Great video especially the wall drill! Will you be talking about side tilt in a future posture video? I often get my right (trail) shoulder to high at address - looking for new drills on this.
Hi Jonathan great video again I play off 6 but struggle to clear my hips at impact I feel it's something I'm doing in my backswing I am a little bit flat or laid off could this be the reason or have you got any videos on this problem many thanks
This dude is truly God sent for the anature struggling golfer such as myself. Mostly everthing he covers i was unsure of and struggled with. He simplified it so well. I have already improved my ball striking and confidence. I can finally have a consistent and reliable swing in my game. I will also take some of his courses. Thank you Jon. You are the man
3:20 at 6’4 I have the exact opposite problem, I feel like I need to hunch forward lower and down a lot onto my toes to get the face to flatten. Maybe need my lie angles adjusted much more upright? When I hit on mats I get a lot marks near the toe and non on the heel
So can arching your lower back and tightening those lower back muscles cause you to top or shank the ball? I've crossed everything off the list and this is the only thing I can think of that is causing it. I feel like I can stay down on the ball better when I round my shoulders a bit and let my back muscles relax.
I found that if I do this setup, my lower back left muscles are strained after a session - or do you reckon that it's something else? Posture is the only thing that makes sense as to why this happens
I normally set my club down first, then grip, then align my feet and shoulder. A lot of the time I feel my posture too upright because when I set the club down, the sole is flat on the ground. That’s been my routine, and it’s hard to change. Any suggestion on how to make that change? Thanks.
Love the wall set up drill , set up changes feel so awkward when the incorrect set up has been ingrained for 40yrs , long time golfer low handicap player. My question is when I set up this way I have more hip tilt at address , I feel more “grounded” in my feet but also because my shoulders are closer to the ball I have less protraction in my shoulders, my arms and body feel more connected which I would think is a good thing but it seems like in this video you are not advocating that?
You don’t want to pinch the shoulder blades together or have a arched lower back since this will limit mobility. Instead you ant a flat lower back and a slightly rounded upper back
Sometimes I will have a tendency to fall toward the ball after downswing while the weight kinda shift toward the toe instead of palm on my feet. Any advice? Tks.
Bryson and Moe Norman change their set up to promote less wrist movements but they still demonstrate tilts, turns and extensions throughout their swing. They just have a different pattern than what is considered a “standard” golf swing
I have 2 comments. First, you should follow up on your tutorial by hitting a ball (make a shot )every time. Second, like Paul Wilson says you must be relaxed and keep your wrists loose. Too many technicals make too many confusing signals ... I am enjoying your lessons.
I can't stop dipping my head towards the ball on my backswing. I know I need to get my weight onto the balls of my feet but i feel like I'm going to fall forward. An inch to an inch and a half away from the wall? I hope I can do that. I'm getting frustrated with the head dip.
Not. true. You can change. But it requires going over and over these lessons ... on the range, not on the course. I am in my late late seventies. I still enjoy making young guys watch me in amazement. Thanks to good instructors like JKim.
Notice he didn’t try to swing from setup with buttocks touching the wall. In the swing both buttocks start in front of the wall, then on backswing the right moves back a few inches to touch the wall, then on downswing the left rolls back to touch the wall.
Like some of this video but not the bits about bum in line with heels. Go look at Rory. His bum is a good 4-5 inches behind his heels at address and he does also have a little bit of knee and ankle bend at address. He’s not sat upright though, he pairs this with a good amount of hip bend to find a good, balanced posture.
I never said the bum is directly in line with the heels…I said that it should not be too far beyond your heels and that these players will have more weight in the heels so they would need to feel as if their hips are tucked more under them to help flatten their lower back and bring the weight more in the Center of the feet
Everyone says I bend over too much (I’m 6’1). I don’t FEEL it, but since so many mention it, I feel I need to setup a bit more upright. I notice Keegan Bradley gets real low (so bent over). I feel like my arms hang straight down and I feel my weight is on the balls of my feet (not on heels, not on toes), but I can do that bent over more. Should I focus on how far my hands are from my thighs? (that is, should my hands be close to my thighs at setup?) What do you think?
It’s hard to say without seeing your set up but from the sound of it you need to stand closer to the ball with your hips tucked more under you. Watch my “posture affects everything” video and I show a great drill you could try.
If you were a player that had too much weight on the heels then it may feel like you have a lot more weight on the balls of the feet. It also depends on how much you are bending your knees and how much you bend from the waist. The feel may be slightly different for people depending on your original set up position.
Tremendous advice on posture, I’ve struggled with many misconceptions on the set up, this is one of the best online channels for golf instruction imo, thanks.

Excellent wall drill for feeling correct setup. Looking over ledge, Thanks

Yea if you are really tall then checking equipment can make a difference
What are posture differences between driver and irons.
With the exception of single plane swing like MOE Norman and Bryson Dechambau
Hands high and sole flat at address equals...Bryson DeChambeau! Unless you are a one plane golfer, don’t do it! Great video.

Thought you should of been more on your heels. However, I noticed they does give you more knee bend which can effect your swing plane and power.
good stuff ...how'd you get so smart ??
Should the lie of the club be adjusted so that the sole can be flat at both address and swing? Wouldn't that provide more consistency?
The club does not necessarily have to be flat at address but mainly at impact. I talk about this during my video about how posture effects everything

There's not video that I watch from you that I haven't leave a like 😂
Where are you located? I'd like to take a lesson.
When I hold the clubs with my hands directly under the shoulders-- the toe of the club come up-- is that OK?
Yes you don’t need to have the sole of the club flat on the ground at address. You want your arms to hang down naturally
And your grip influences your posture !
The last drill at the first time it was little bit strange, it’s similar to a revelation 😂

Very good instruction but cut the music out.

What if your a big person? Big belly.
That can definitely influence things. Not necessarily a bad thing, it just means the swing will need to be built slightly different
