@MattsShop Wife's got a Tahoe with the 5.3 in it and it's been a great truck. I'm a Ford guy if we're being honest but her truck has proven it's worth. Cutting the chase I just purchased an 05 Z71 1500 mostly because I couldn't pass it up for 500$. Put a battery in it and it fired right up after sitting for close to 2 years. After a quick once over and a trip or two to the local gas station it grew on me. It's now my project and needles to say I'll have to put a bit of love (cash) and elbow grease in before I am satisfied. You are now my Vortec professor of sorts lol. The other thing that will fool you on these old chevys about a possible rear main seal is a leaking oil pressure sending unit. It's above the rear main so if that sending unit leaks it drips down and you'll think it's a rear main. Old chevys also had a tendency to leak from the front left inboard axle seal. Above that seal is a large round plastic cover with a vent tube attachment. That cover can also leak and fool you into thinking the axle seal is leaking.
Yeah, it's true. Those seals will leak down and trick you. You'll think the rear main seal leaks, and it doesn't. Most guys keep saying they swapped the rear main seal, and it still leaks. That's why they have problems.
Do these leaks appear on driver side wheel well? Having trouble finding small leak it doesn’t get on my driveway , could this be the sending unit ? 04 2500HD
There were allot of things you left out. Allot of times leaks towards the rear of the oil pan can come from a Cam Sensor on Gen 3 & lower or the Oil pressure sending unit. They will leak oil down and onto your starter bolts and oil filter. Also the rear main seal & cover gasket like to leak oil as well. The rear main seal cover gasket is overlooked allot. Also the reason you have moisture on the oil cap is because your PCV system isn't working correctly. Some engines have a make shift PCV valve that's not really a valve but the little tiny port on the Driver Side valve cover "The Dirty Side" gets clogged. That is the port that dumps oil into your intake manifold. On some LS engines GM has a updated Drivers Side Valve Cover. Good Luck!

Thanks I appreciate it. I'm glad I've helped out a lot. You should be good with the GG plugs on a 2002, but double check on Rockauto some of the older trucks use a weird Delphi part number. If your truck runs good with what you got you are good to go though 👍
Owner since new of a 99' Silverado LT, 5.3 liter, 4x4. 200+k miles. Can not complain on the engine at all. Still runs well with general prescribed maintenance. Best part of the truck. Well done Gm! However, it does have assorted oil leaks. Miracle, lucky for those that do not. Short of seal replacements, within ease, all are original, but reality is they usually fail with age. All rejuvinator additives, in my case maybe slow the drips down. My question, if you could estimate your hours, or a shops/mechanics time on replacing all the seals as you have done on the Avalanche, what would estimate, realistically, not "repair book" shop hours, on realistic time for replacement as you have done on the Avalanche?
Hey Matt I owned a 2002 Z66 Avalanche and noticed my car is leaking transmission fluid from the u joint. What can that possibly be? I don’t see it leaking from the transfer case seal but from the U-joint I see tranny fluid on it? Anything helps! Thank you!! 🙏🏽
In my experience with gen 3 ls engines, they either leak a ton of oil or not at all. My 04 silverado with the 6.0 doesn't leak anything at 177k but my 00 trans am at 100k with the ls1 leaks like crazy. However, all ls engines do burn oil. I recommend getting a catch can. Especially on the DI gen 5 lt engines. Also if you change the intake gasket on a gen 3, change the knock sensors while you're there and seal them. Water will get into the sensor holes and cause them to go out
You have to pull the engine, or drop the front differential to take the oil pan off. It's easier to pull the engine, it makes everything easier to get to. It's an all day job, or 2 or 3. I'd change the timing chain & gear, if your engine has high milage. Mobile 1 ... 10 W 30 is the way to go. Use AC Delco parts when you can.

Yes, you can use an AC Delco PF61 or Mobile M205A filter, the Mobile is slightly larger in diameter, which makes it harder to put on. Always use Mobile 1 oil in your engine.
If you live in the rust belt and it's not a big leak like half a quart in a oil change you benefit from the coating under the vehicle.I run a 2002 lesabre from the Poconos to Morris County New Jersey 4 days a week that 3800 series 2 has a little drip but the whole underside of that car has no rust at 190000 miles,I change my oil myself usually every 4 to 45 hundred miles.
Mine used to leak... so I fixed it.. now it doesn't leak! Mine used to have low oil pressure... cam bearing fixed that. Mine used to burn oil... I found my oil wiper rings on my pistons were stuck. After freeing them... it quit burning oil. I've reused my original intake gaskets everytime I've removed the intake. Wix filters suck almost as bad as K&N filters.
It has been my experience that the oil life will not reset if there isn't enough light to keep the automatic headlights off. Being an after hours mechanic, I have used a flashlight on that dash mounted light sensor many times to reset the oil life indicator. Has anyone else noticed this?

Hey Matt, right on the nipple where the wire clicks on to the coil pack. One of mine has a crack like right on the plastic. Somebody broke a chip out of it. It's still clicks perfectly fine, but do you think that could affect it? Should I replace the coil? It seems like it's running out right? I threw a zip tie around that one too for extra love ... Whoever did it shoved a bunch of dielectric in there to try to prevent corrosion or moisture getting in I guess or arc getting out
hey, good video. i just did a head rebuild after a head gasket going bad. After putting it all back together with new gaskets, I noticed it has a high idle around 900 RPM.. I replaced the idle sensor,02 sensors, purge valve solenoid, and I couldn't fix the problem, so I took the intake back off just now. I have the teal color gaskets that you showed in the video. I do notice some fresh oil in the intake, what would cause oil getting into the intake manifold? i'm getting p0174, p0507, and p0171.

My 07 Silverado doesn't burn a lick of oil i bought it used i guess the previous owner did something to stop it from burning oil because he did the full delete of the dod
The next time you drop the pan if you look you'll see two bolt holes you can use at the top of oil pick up tube. Move the bolt to the hole thats closer to front of truck. Then it can easily be removed from the front of engine. When it's time to replace the oil pump you won't have to drop the oil pan, diff, or as many f-bombs.
My 5.7 litre Chevrolet Gen3 LS1 V8 engine is fitted into a 2002 model Holden VY SS Commodore which was built in Australia & it's pretty much the same engine as Holden put into the left hand drive Pontiac GTO then exported to North America. According to Holden, it takes as little over a quart of oil (1.1 litres) to bring the oil level back up to the full mark from the add mark,I normally add 1 litre of oil at the 5000 kilometre or 3000 mile mark because last time It burned through that much oil by then. I run 10W40 full synthetic engine oil due to how hot it gets in Australia although Holden do recommend using a 10W30 grade of oil,1000 kilometres (600 miles) before the last oil change I had to add another litre of oil but I used some 15W40 semi synthetic engine oil which I had lying around the shed because I didn't want to spend $23 AUD on a litre or a quart of semi synthetic engine oil. The engine doesn't appear to be blowing smoke & it's just clocked over past 400,000 kilometres (248,550 miles) & Holden considers anything below 2.5 litres or quarts oil consumption every 10,000 kilometres is acceptable. I might have some leaking valve stem oil seals which are just a tad leaky but I am not too worried about it, mine doesn't leak externally since I have resealed the engine & I have recently resealed the valve rocker covers which stopped it leaking oil so we'll see what its oil consumption is now after I replaced the oil seals !
@@MattsShop 5/30 Amzoil. I bought the truck at one year old and actually had it parked for years. Squirrels kept staging attacks on my wiring harness. I moved and fixed all those things that suck on a old truck, including brake and fuel lines. Been parked on clean concrete for about 5 years now with just over 100 grand on the odometer. Looks and runs really sweet for a rustbelt truck. I don't drive her with any salt on the roads anymore. Have a good one!
I have a 99 silverado with a 5.3 vortec. Im having issues with what I think may be high oil pressure resulting in my filter and oil pan gaskets leaking. When truck idles it sits at 40 psi… then I start accelerating and it will pick up to about 60 psi, and if i floor it it goes up to 80 psi. I feel that that is high oil pressure and some components may need to be changed, can someone let me know if these oil pressure readings are high? Can someone share their oil pressure temps
Your pressure sensor or dash guage could be reading wrong .my silverado vortec cold start pressure is 44 at idol .hot idle is 20 but if your oil is clean and your filter is new and you have normal power and normal engine temperature I would think your sensor or guage is off
My oil pressure moves up and down like very very little at idle but it never gets low just weird lol 😂 but I never get worried about it. I rebuilt my 5.3 with a performance engine kit off summit and after 3 years no leaks. But these engines do burn oil I’m at 3,000 miles since my last oil change and it burns about a quart every 3500 so it’s not bad just make sure you guys always check your oil levels every week or twice a week even without leaks keep changing your oil every 3,000 to 3500 miles
Man I got a 2002 GMC Sierra it's been leaking oil since I got in 2020 I probably shouldn't just let it ride but I don't even know where to start with it!
In my 5.3 I always put 6 quarts of oil I do 5 quarts of 10W-40 and the last quarter I put is Lucas oil stabilizer been doing that all my life and my truck has 400,000 and it's cammed runs like a champ catch me on I-10 doing a 100-120 every weekend no problem
I've had many 500,000kms+ 6.0, 5.7, 6.2, 8.1 Absolutely amazing engines, I use mobile 1 full syn with a mobile 1 filter or wix. The mobile 1 full syn stays cleaner longer and definitely will clean up oil passages.
My 2006 5.3l with 165k on it burns or leaks about a quart every 3000 miles. On mine if it has barely any oil in the dipstick and I add a quart it will take it to full mark. I basically run it for 3k miles, add a quart, and then run it until it gets low again and do a change. Equates to about 6-7k mile oil change interval.
Sounds about right. If they get that low. I normally change the oil. If it's at the bottom of the crosshatch I normally add a quart of oil and it brings it up to the top of the crosshatch.
I've never really had an leaky ls. They have o-ringed gaskets. usually when they start pissing its from excessive crankcase pressure. Usually bad pcv valve or blow-by. You can add more crankcase ventilation that helps alot. But there's an old school racer trick I had to see it to believe it. Do a couple quick getto fog revs with some NOS that cold charge can some time's help revive tired ring's.
I use Castrol GTX high mileage synthetic blend. Save a few bucks. But my 6th qt is always full synthetic! 6 qts everytime. No leaks on my garage floor or anywhere else that i see. Make my own syn blend percentage.
I think so. Truck has never failed an emissions test nor have I had any oil related problems. No ticking or oil pressure issues. Oil still looks ok on dipstick at 5k miles oil changes.
Avalanches there good looking trucks till they lose all those accent plastic pieces or start rusting then they just look like all the other rust buckets, sorry man not a fan,you can have them all!!!one mans beauty is anothers mans horror!!snooky pa😊😊

Has anyone tried the bigger filter on a 2011?
My Silverado qhwn i change my oil and i put my 6 quarts of oil in it the oil line is all the way to the numbers and i let my truck sit in the air with the drain plug out and the oil fill cap off so all the oil is coming out i dont know why my full mark is on the numbers every time
I use Wix as well but I change it when it gets down to 30%
Hey Matt, right on the nipple where the wire clicks on to the coil pack. One of mine has a crack like right on the plastic. Somebody broke a chip out of it. It's still clicks perfectly fine, but do you think that could affect it? Should I replace the coil? It seems like it's running out right? I threw a zip tie around that one too for extra love
... Whoever did it shoved a bunch of dielectric in there to try to prevent corrosion or moisture getting in I guess or arc getting out
So this same o-ring is present on a 5.3 LM7?
Also, the oil cooler line gasket is often the culprit of what looks like a rear main leak.
hey, good video. i just did a head rebuild after a head gasket going bad.
I would replace the valve covers. It’s causing oil to go up the pcv vacuum and into the intake. At least that’s what mine was doing.
@@Kenichi_one Update- It was oreillys bullshit housebrand pcv valve. I got a oem one from chevy for $8 and back to normal idle.
If you install a catch can you can reduce the oil vapor blowby keeping your intake cleaner @@DCBDesigns
@@jonschwartz9669 thanks. reason was oreillys house brand pcv valve. i put in Oem one and idles back perfectly good. Thanks for the info
I purchased a JTL brand 200 bucks has a 3 ounce can and I catch one ounce every few thousand miles
What’s your take on the timing cover gasket and seal?
It's a pain to do. I leave it alone or see if the bolts are loose before I replace it lol
@@MattsShop I’ve replaced every other seal except that one and if I start it and it leaks again I’m going to pull my hair out lol

I have a 2004 Chevy silverado extended cab LS 4.8L when I try to pass I have my gas Pedal to the Floor and it doesn't pick up speed can you help and let know what I can fix thanks
Clean your throttle body and maf sensor
My 07 Silverado doesn't burn a lick of oil i bought it used i guess the previous owner did something to stop it from burning oil because he did the full delete of the dod
I changed my oil pump pick up o-ring by just going through the front and removing the oil pump.
Not EASY but easier than pulling the pan on a 4wd.
Yea, that's a pretty rough job. Sounds easier than dropping the pan on a 4x4 though.
Oh man, I have a 4wd and I don’t want to have to do it 😢
It's not bad until you have to actually do the oil pump to pick up bolt, there's only one.
Did you say you wait a year for iil change? If so your crazy. Thats just aaking for slidge build uo
When you have to fill it every week with a quart you don’t have to worry about changing your oil 😂
You check the transmission fluid with truck running, and probably best to switch through a couple gears

I don't have one to work on!
2000 Sierra 5.3, and the driveway is as clean as it was when poured. No leaks for me!
What weight oil do you use?
Your pressure sensor or dash guage could be reading wrong .my silverado vortec cold start pressure is 44 at idol .hot idle is 20 but if your oil is clean and your filter is new and you have normal power and normal engine temperature I would think your sensor or guage is off
Keep the vids coming..great content..
Thanks I will!
Is it same on my 85 nissan 720 kingcab
Same idea. General areas to check.
i mean if you have a oil leak that just means no oil changes are needed bc the oil sweat allows you to add new oil
Exactly, always fresh oil lol
My oil pressure moves up and down like very very little at idle but it never gets low just weird lol 😂 but I never get worried about it. I rebuilt my 5.3 with a performance engine kit off summit and after 3 years no leaks. But these engines do burn oil I’m at 3,000 miles since my last oil change and it burns about a quart every 3500 so it’s not bad just make sure you guys always check your oil levels every week or twice a week even without leaks keep changing your oil every 3,000 to 3500 miles
Yes, they use a lot of oil. The updated valve cover is supposed to help with that issue, but a lot of guys don't know about that fix.
When you install the tube back into the counterbore coat it with The Right Stuff Black.
Man I got a 2002 GMC Sierra it's been leaking oil since I got in 2020 I probably shouldn't just let it ride but I don't even know where to start with it!
What if my trucks got crazy high oil pressure
The pressure sensor or the gauge is probably wrong/bad.
I have 240000 miles on my 2006 1500 hd and it does not leak oil and does not use any either.
What happens if you put about a quart too much oil in the engine?
Time paradox, the universe will implode
I use high mileage full synthetic oils, I started using it at 120.000 miles and no leaks, using regular oil leaks
Where are you? My newly aquired 05 may need you 😅
Thanks Matt learning a lot from your video s
Glad to hear it!
Add a can of restore along with the lucas

The mobile 1 full syn stays cleaner longer and definitely will clean up oil passages.

my gmc 5.7 vortec does not leak
I have a silverado 4.8 2006 is it bad to drive far with a main seal leak
If it's not that bad it's fine.
The pedal thing was so cool
My 2006 5.3l with 165k on it burns or leaks about a quart every 3000 miles. On mine if it has barely any oil in the dipstick and I add a quart it will take it to full mark. I basically run it for 3k miles, add a quart, and then run it until it gets low again and do a change. Equates to about 6-7k mile oil change interval.
Sounds about right. If they get that low. I normally change the oil. If it's at the bottom of the crosshatch I normally add a quart of oil and it brings it up to the top of the crosshatch.
Mine has dimples instead of holes.
Really? The ones I always see have holes.

@@MattsShop Castrol 5w30 full synthetic
I've never really had an leaky ls. They have o-ringed gaskets. usually when they start pissing its from excessive crankcase pressure. Usually bad pcv valve or blow-by. You can add more crankcase ventilation that helps alot. But there's an old school racer trick I had to see it to believe it. Do a couple quick getto fog revs with some NOS that cold charge can some time's help revive tired ring's.
I have a GMC 6.2 L and the dipstick is a cable, I think a great design. Extremely Flexible.
What doesnt leak tell me that
Hopefully nothing leaks.
I use Castrol GTX high mileage synthetic blend. Save a few bucks. But my 6th qt is always full synthetic! 6 qts everytime. No leaks on my garage floor or anywhere else that i see. Make my own syn blend percentage.
Does the high milage help? I've been using it on some trucks.
I think so. Truck has never failed an emissions test nor have I had any oil related problems. No ticking or oil pressure issues. Oil still looks ok on dipstick at 5k miles oil changes.
Put Lucus in the oil!! Won't leak!
Oh good to know
Yea!!
