Washington's greatest attribute was his emotional control and the ability to maintain an even temperament under stressful situations. He worked on it early and cultivated it his entire life...as if he knew what his destiny was. He was not a first class Intellect or General but he possessed a first class Character.

I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of his not being a first class general or had the intellect. His skill as a general was demonstrated by his tactic for hit and run because of an inferior army vs. the British and their superior numbers at almost EVERY engagement! Then there is the fact that he skillfully negotiated with the French and kept them informed of his armies and their positions to PROVE to them that the young Americans can and WILL fight and not give up under duress. Therefore earning their trust. All the while his army threatened to give up because of lack of pay! A first class general AND A masterful tactician with great character while holding the American army together and earning the trust of the French!

@@shilohpuppy5649 I did not intend for it to come across as a critique of GW....rather my intention was to recognize that he used the all strengths he had....particularly leadership of a group of Officers, mostly non-professionals and dandys with some even vying to supplant him as CinC. He swatted them down, not so much with his professional acumen as with his own personal gravitas. Washington was the "Indispensable Man".

The point of this scene was to show that Washington was magnanimous. The publisher is taken aback by his genuine character; a man whose character he had previously assassinated but had never met before this moment. Washington wanted it to be known that with the conflict over, the Americans and their British kin could still heal. There need not be any more fighting of any kind, lest it be done in a gentlemanly manner.

In what way? The show is mostly honest… it depicts the war effort, not the cause or reason… there really wasn’t a reason.
At the time these were British subjects; not colonized like the Indians, but literally colonizers…
After the 7 years war, the crown was bankrupt and decided to place a tax (previously untaxed colonials) on the very folks they went bankrupt defending…
It wasn’t noble of us. We wanted to invade more native territory but the crown said no; even Washington had investments on future stolen land.
We were basically living well because of the crown, and went on a temper tantrum when we had to pay taxes like every other British subject.
Nevermind the fact that so many colonials were TORIES who got abused, killed, raped.
This was not a good vs evil story. It was a bunch of chain reactions and propaganda swaying how folks thought.
It’s right up there with WW1 in wars that NEVER should have happened.
Am I glad the US now exists? Yes. Was the war justified? No. Would the world be a better place if it didn’t? Who knows. World wars like the American war of independence, 7 years war, 1812, ww1 are all likely interwoven in causation of future events.

I’m glad the USA exists today, I’m an American; with American and German parents.
I’m also quite an avid history reader… the more you read about both the war of American independence and the American revolution (yes they are two separate things; began and ended at different points), the more you learn the almost futile nature of clashing ideologies.
Again, the crown; that’s the government of the people who colonized the eastern coast of the US, was BANKRUPTED BY the 7 years war; what some folks call “the French and Indian war”…
The entire war was a defense of British colonial regions against the french as well as some native components (while some native tribes fought with the British; again, at this point nobody in “America” would call themselves anything but an English subject)…
The entire conflict was a combination of escalations back and forth… basically LONG delays in communications, logistics, and other factors from mainland Britain to colonial “America” set forth events that led to basically a pissing contests.
Was either side right? No. Not in anyway, kind of like WW1, the complexities of the situation had no bad people vs good… just people jumping in a bandwagon.

Like how WW1 doesn't get enough attention for the problems that caused it and its second round, all they want to focus on is the Holocaust, despite the Holocaust deniers, and Hitler and his political party they've turned into the embodiment of evil despite the fact that it was the way they ended WW1 that gave rise to Hitler and they don't acknowledge that the party's atrocities were primarily pushed by a small group of individuals who used said manner in which WW1 ended to gain the support of the people. Same difference here where they'd rather focus on promoting the sainted version rather than any inconvenient versions.

I believe Rivington was part of the Culper spy ring. He was loyal to Washington and the Americans and Simcoe by all accounts was an honorable well regarded officer by.both sides. The province of Ontario in Canada have a holiday named after Simcoe. There was a lot of things like this in that show (which I liked) but I never understood why they shook everything up.

So any romance between them would be unrealistic especially considering both were married(adultery was a big no no in those days). Also, Abraham's father Richard would live to see the end of the revolution and beyond and was not killed in a prisoner exchange.

There were several revisions. Although from what I have read Simcoe was tempered later in life, but he was a very fanatical soldier. Just not anywhere near the level we see in the show.

General George Washington is history's greatest general!
The only point of battles won or battles lost is that you glean or lose the political currency to "purchase" the political force to make your opponent start doing or stop doing what you dictate.
General Washington was commander of the Continental Army. This army's efforts, under his command, purchased the power and space to create a new form of government, a republic wherein sovereignty rested with the people. The ideas embodied in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States caused a political earthquake through out the Western world.
Not too GD bad for someone with little more than militia level experience jousting with professional officers and highly disciplined regiments!!

Think of this when any government agent or leader tells to the press is against you or the government. The press isn't there to sing the glory of a government agent or leader. Yes there are some that do just as there are others who don't. Take the time and read both sides and decide for yourself.

@@Monatio79 Surely you jest! Gandhi is the only man on that list that deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence with Washington. Even for Gandhi, it was a much easier task. Gandhi had only to remain focused on his goal and stay true to his path. Admittedly, a feat far beyond most people! However, Washington was a man of action, he had to resist the temptation to seize the powers that lay before him, often with unobstructed access to them. I don't know of another human that has withstood such temptation. Also, if you were just going to list good and selfless people, I think it rather a disservice to humanity that you leave Mother Teresa off that list. She certainly far outshines Lincoln and Mandela shouldn't ever be listed with even people of Lincoln's stature. I find no fault in anything I know of the 14th Dalai Lama. I admire him and if it were in my power, I would liberate his people and restore him to Tibet today. His current principle oppressor, Chairman Pooh Bear Xi, should be found on lists with Mandela. However, he still doesn't rise to the level of even Mother Teresa. Lincoln was a man facing extremely trying times with good intentions and his assassination kept him from seeing all of those through. However, he also did some terrible things in pursuit of those goals. Things that Washington would never have done. Things we still suffer from today.

This is so hilariously historically inaccurate that I'm not even sure where to begin. 1. The first anti-slavery meeting in the English language took place in Philadelphia, chaired by Benjamin Franklin and other Colonial rebels. 2. Slavery did not end in the British Empire until the 1830s, long after the Revolution. 3. The British Empire was not attempting to end slavery in the 1760s/70s. 4. Slavery did not end in Canada in 1778. In fact, many Canadian slaves escaped into the American-controlled Ohio country due it not really having slavery but the Toronto-area itself having allowed slavery.
      5. The American Revolution had nothing to do with slavery on either end. It had to do with liberal Enlightenment ideology (the U.S revolution was the first liberal democratic revolution in human history) and the British attempting to turn the Colonies in North America into under-developed agricultural export colonies ruled economically by an imperial trading desk in London. The colonists balked at this, they wanted to develop and expand, not be turned into impoverished hick farmer backwaters. This is what led to the American Revolution. Canada itself was turned into this by the British, an ag-export country, not allowed to industrially develop, its what led to the rebellions against the British in Upper and Lower Canada in the 1800s.
Finally, the British were not a historically progressive force in this war and had no intention of stopping slavery or any of that. Its nonsense to suggest otherwise, all historical evidence and basic common reality points to the contrary. The Americans were a historically progressive force, in the sense that they helped spread, expand and solidify liberal democracy over Tory ideology and later inspired the overthrow of the Ancien Regimes in continental Europe. Even Marx and Lenin recognized this fact. The British fought to preserve reactionary politics and the past. They were an anti-progressive force in 1775-1783.
