    Hey there, I know that you've not done a lot of camera reviews but I just wanted to add a few things here:
    > You completely missed the point regarding the camera's optical viewfinder, this is a camera that's meant for subtle streetphotography (leaf shutter + RF like OVF and external control dials + low profile design), and so it is GREAT when you get to see what's coming into your frame, therefore allowing you to anticipate your shots, something that street photographers love the Leica M series for.
    > You didn't mention the little pop up screen in the OVF which allows for fine tuning of the manual focus and previewing your focusing zone, a feature which users of the previous X100 cameras have been lusting after for some time.
    > Lastly, the difficulty with framing shots with the optical viewfinder is only really apparent if you are shooting up close to a subject, something which this camera is not intended for (do not let the macro mode fool you), it has a focal length equivalent of 35mm and is appreciated best if you are about 2 meters away from your subject for minimal distortion and maximum sharpness. Again, this is street photography heaven.
    All this is coming from an ex user of the original X100 and current user of an X100s and a manual focusing Sony A7. And for street photography, the X100s/t wins hands down, an amazing camera that somehow nudges you to shoot more, get on the streets more and make art.
    Other than that, very good video man, keep it up, I'm looking forward to more camera related content!
    Hoc

    I have not had the pleasure to see this camera in person yet, but I couldn't agree more about shooting with a compact camera and short prime lens. Its one of those great times when having less options forces you to really commit to doing the shot you want initially, which really captures the emotion of photography. I also really like the styling of this camera, however unlike much of its competition its just not an item that I could even recommend anyone buys unless they already have multiple camera bodies due to its lack of flexibility.
    Take for instance the Panasonic Lx100, its slightly cheaper at only ~$900usd, about the same size yet packs an incredible f1.7 24-75mm zoom lens, a better electronic view finder and even the ability to shoot 4k 16:9 video. Sure it may only have the same battery life, and 13 megapixels compared to the 16 of the Fujifilm X100T, but its a camera that you could actually own as your only photography option and use every day without feeling constrained by its feature set. And while I do really love the idea of a back to basics camera, that is something that clearly can't be said for the Fujifilm X100T, so its stuck in the awkward situation of actually competing for market share with the film cameras it looks so much like as an expensive photographers toy.
    Of course lots of the drawbacks you listed in this camera could be ironed out in firmware later on, and its very high end price may also ease a little, which would make it a fairly attractive item in this market segment. So while not going to replace your daily driver type camera any time soon the real question is does it need too? Or can we justify owning a camera that only does one thing worth noting, but does it so well...

    Possibly the best review of the X100 line Ive watched so far, with well observed criticism and valuable final verdict. Theres way too much hype but also uncalled for hate surrouning the X100. How ironic it takes a tech guy and not a full-time photographer to give it a fair trial. Thanks.

    Beautifully shot review man and that's one damn fine sweater. I've only a couple of tiny niggles with the review. The first is that macro mode would be impossible anyway with the optic viewfinder, due to the parallax effect inherent in the rangefinder design. There's no way of getting round this except with EVF, and so they can be forgiven this. I agree with your depth of field limitation too, but it does leave the optic viewfinder with one handy mode of operation. That is - zone focusing! For a long time the go-to mode of street photographers, just set your depth of field with help from the EVF, operate on F/8 and just raise to the eye and fire away when you need it. No pausing for focusing, no lag, a perfect way to shoot on the street. As for video mode, I agree, I would not buy this camera if you want quality video. The strengths of the filmic X-Trans sensor in still shooting are its prime weakness in video. Fuji themselves have admitted that they just haven't worked out how to get the X-Trans sensor to do natural looking footage, it's a lot trickier than with a traditional Bayer sensor, apparently. Anyway, aside from that great review - engaging, thoughtful, some fine shots and yes, one hell of a sweater.

      Peter Evans Hahahaha! Thanks for the sweater compliment :D And always appreciate feedback on our reviews and your's is insightful! Haven't done so much street photography and having F8.0 and click away is an excellent idea :D

    Personally I'm an avid fan of the optical viewfinder. Not seeing depth of field forces you way more to incorporate elements that you would otherwise just blur out in DSLR shots. Also, you can see "outside" of the frame, which allows you to assess your composition more easily. I'd chose it any day over the electronic one. But I guess that's why there's both of em :P

    • @willf4718
      @willf4718 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think DOF is something you come to estimate anyway. And even though you can preview it on a DSLR, I find I almost never do. If you're shooting street, you're quite likely just to fix at f8 and zone focus anyway. I think OVF has to win most of the time when it comes to smaller cameras, just for the gains in battery life.

    the purpose of this camera is not about versatility but rather its for the fun of using a range finder. the ability to take videos is actually a bonus rather than a drawback because it doesnt take good quality videos. its expensive because it a rangefinder and you have fun taking pictures with it. nuff said.

    You do understand that moving the focus ring actually PHYSICALLY changes the focus, right? It's not something that's done electronically, the ring is attached to the focus mechanism. It's unfair to knock it for not doing something like changing the ISO when it physically can't. Focus rings are good for overriding the autofocus to purposely put things out of focus, as well. They serve their purpose. You could assign it to something else on the other camera because that's a M4/3.

    Having been a Nikon user (D700 & D3) for some time now I've switched to the Fuji X100T and although it's not perfect, the pictures that you get really are something quite special. I'm hoping that future Firmware upgrades will improve the minor niggles, then it really will be perfect. Using it for street photography so the video function really doesn't matter. My main complaint is that there is a slight delay after taking a photo, whereas with the Nikon you can just click away. I've got a fast SD card in there so if Fuji can rectify this problem I will be very happy.

      @HardwareCanucks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      manzur RAZZAQ I agree! I loved just walking around and taking street photos with this. the F2.0 is perfect for evening shots and handling is pretty much perfect aside from the lack of a little nibble for the thumb.

    • @woodrowclose
      @woodrowclose 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HardwareCanucks You should consider buying a thumbs up and also a soft release. These two additions have really improved the handling of the camera, especially the soft release which I could not do without. I bought mine from matchtechnical. Their service is outstanding, and although a bit pricey the quality is exceptional. www.matchtechnical.com/Pages/ThumbsUpEP2TFujiX100T.aspx www.matchtechnical.com/Pages/OurNewSoftReleases.aspx

    I just bought a used X100 for $300 as a complimentary camera to my D750 ^-^ It's a camera I'm going to have in all my bags and take places that I'd usually rely on my phone. (or not take photos at all)
    The D750 is pretty small and light for a full frame DSLR but this will definitely be awesome to have. Plus, it's cheaper than me buying a 35mm prime for my D750 and more fun than just having another lens to switch around.

    No zoom, few bells and whistles, old ergonomics, high still images quality and a high price tag: it is a strongly typed camera, some would say a niche camera. One of the bests of the few of its kind.
    You sure need to make your homework, or better try one, before you want to buy one. But if it matches your specs, it will fulfill them.
    By the way, the optical viewfinder is with the leaf shutter what makes that camera unique.

    one of the best street photography camera. I love using this in tight space, but the f/2 lens is a downside for me :(

      i like wider aperture, also, i like to shoot in low light situation. im not saying its bad tho, but i just like f/1.0

      HardwareCanucks I kinda giggled at the f/2 lens. After getting used to f/1.4 on my Canon A-1, anything higher seems limiting, especially for such an expensive camera.

      ://about _blank I believe there is a sweet spot between physical size of the lens and its speed. Your F/1.4 probably is a bit larger than the sense on this camera.

      +Toka Takao I love fast lenses as well, but I bet the X100T would be bulkier and more expensive with something like that.

    I don't care much about photography anymore, but I watched this video anyway to continue my watching every video routine. I even went to look at how much it potentially set me back....and that's where you lost me. $1300!? Especially for the draw backs. You can get a good DSLR Body and lens for that, no thanks.

      Timothy Haun That's true, it is an expensive camera and yes you could get an entry level DSLR with a nice prime for that much. There are always drawbacks but the form factor of the X100T is a good balance between size and photo potential :D

      Hey thanks for the feedback! My mother is very much into photography and has been my whole life. She in fact has the(one of the) film cameras by Fujifilm that this was modeled after. I feel like this would be a good camera for a photo professional who wants to point and shoot, but not a good camera for a novice who just wants to point and shoot (me).
      Because as I said, if I were to try my hand at serious photography I would go get a really nice used DSLR body and then pic up a couple of lenses with the change. You managed to get some really nice shots though, and even though you commented on the video quality, I thought it was actually pretty good
