    1:49 Symptoms of Muscle Cramps
    2:30 Treatment of Muscle Cramps
A cramp is a sudden, involuntary muscle contraction or overshortening; while generally temporary and non-damaging, they can cause significant pain and a paralysis-like immobility of the affected muscle. Muscle cramps are common and are often associated with pregnancy, physical exercise or overexertion, age (common in older adults), or may be a sign of a motor neuron disorders.[1] Cramps may occur in a skeletal muscle or smooth muscle. Skeletal muscle cramps may be caused by muscle fatigue or a lack of electrolytes such as sodium (a condition called hyponatremia), potassium (called hypokalemia), or magnesium (called hypomagnesemia[2]). Some skeletal muscle cramps do not have a known cause.[1] Cramps of smooth muscle may be due to menstruation or gastroenteritis. Motor neuron disorders (e.g., amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), metabolic disorders (e.g., liver failure), some medications (e.g., diuretics and inhaled beta‐agonists), and haemodialysis may also cause muscle cramps.[1]
A cramp usually starts suddenly and it also usually goes away on its own over a period of several seconds, minutes, or hours. Restless leg syndrome and rest cramps are not considered the same as muscle cramps.[1]

Had the worst and first triple cramp in the middle of the night. I woke up to my right calf completely flattened out and contracted, and when I attempted to stretch it out, my hamstring cramped. Then the quad. For two whole minutes, I tried not to cry bc my brother and Dad were sleeping, but after long enough, I couldn't hold it in. I was sobbing and sobbing, calling for help when my brother heard me and raced to my room, bless his soul. He massaged my leg out for a good long while, gave me muscle recovery pills, and heat cream to soothe my leg. Mind you, I had just completed a 2-hour volleyball try-out just hours before after not playing volleyball for about six years. I shocked my legs with the sudden exertion, that's for certain. Never again. Never. Again. God bless my little brother.

I'll get calf cramps when I stretch in my sleep. I can usually stop them from getting painful by extending my leg perpendicular to my body and pointing my toes back down towards me causing the heel to be the highest point.
Whenever these get frequent, I'll buy a bunch of bananas, eat them over the course of a week and that will tend to keep me for a while.

I too sometimes wake up and as I extend my leg get the worst of cramps....most often the curling toes back works, but sometimes I literally have to mentally check into the relax zone and do everything I can to mentally "calm" both mind and leg. It does go away after a while. But it's a real shitty way to wake up and the residual pain lasts most of the day as I limp through the morning. Any real use that morning can trigger an instant relapse.

I have muscle issues due to systemic lupus erythmatosis. Part of SLE (lupus) is you have many food allergies, bananas are in the Latex plant family, I am allergic to Latex, so I opted into taking a natural potassium pill every other day, I will add that you should be cautious about potassium if you have heart issues. But, natural banana is great, also my sodium levels in labs are also low. I eat a lot of salt too? Go figure. I do find my muscles spasms with stretching and sometimes twitch, but if I take the potassium it helps immensely. I have literally woken myself up cursing due to Charlie Horses in my calves. Avocados are also in the Latex family-just an FYI. So as many ppl are allergic to Latex, be aware of that, supplementary capsules for potassium helps me.

Just watching this because I experienced the worst pain I’ve ever felt having a full body cramp yesterday...Literally I had this all over my body...in my neck my back, toes caves and even my thighs I’ve had cramps happen to me for years and thought I could deal with it...However I just over did it and got home cramping on and off throughout the day so I figured I could make it to my room...My body had other plans I started cramping in my legs and tried to maneuver to a position to release the build up in my legs...car door open and all and out of no where my legs straightened and I lost control of them I dropped to the ground and it just was excruciating it struck until I couldn’t move anywhere...in my calves my stomach my shoulders any part that has a muscle omg...And then after I was left defenseless in the Cotta sack....Everything cramped again and I just had to lay there and take it even breathing was hard to do because it was cramps in my chest area...I found out only one place will cramp intensely at a time however other places still cramp...I was on the ground for about an hour and a half...Something literally could’ve just ate me alive...My mom came out and had to hand feed me salt and water people drove by asking if I was ok...I thought I’d die honestly because how every muscle seem to contract and thought maybe it could get to my heart...It may seem like I’m over exaggerating but I can assure you it’s that serious so take care of yourself don’t over do it and continue to fuel yourself with the right things I wouldn’t wish that pain on my worse enemy...Being left helpless in your own body is a scary thing

Generally happens after I wake up, right after I stretch involuntarily, I know exactly what's about to happen. Also happened when I was playing basketball, I was dehydrated and I landed awkwardly and it was probably the worst cramp yet. I'm curious why the body does this or why it generally affects the legs.

I have these weird cramps that can happen almost anytime, at random but mostly happen while doing sports, and that is it feels like my toes are crossing each other, it feels really weird, and usually what happens, is the cramp occurs for several minutes, then stops for like 10 - 30 seconds, then happens again for several minutes, than stops for like 10 - 30 seconds, and keeps on repeating, I hope whoever is reading this could potentially tell me if they have experienced the same thing, or if they know what could cause it.

Drink 1 glass of water every hour during the day, then 1 glass before bed and keep a bottle near your bed and take a few sips every time you wake up at night. See how it goes. For me it keeps these cramps away, but the actual reason for these cramps is either vascular or nervous (nerves affected near the lower spine). I first had these cramps at night (woke up screaming) then during the day - brutal pain, need to stretch that area for relief (move painful feet behind you, bend the other knee, push with both hands against a wall, feel how the painful muscle is stretching, look up goggle "calf stretches"). Drink water constantly to keep these away.

I get sometimes cramps too the only thing understood is that they are like a powered battery, when you let them go they use some kind of latent power and stop when its depleted. Also stretching the muscle so it does not have means of compressing stops it

I always get very small cramps ones that the pain is nothing to bad.
But I just got one so bad, so sudden. I bent my my left foot forward (Not using my hands or anything just bent it on my own will) to crack my ankle/loosen my calf. It came with one the sharpest pains I’ve felt. I saw my leg moving and it lasted for about 1:30. When you get a extremely bad cramp, YOU'LL KNOW.
I’ll never complain bout the sissy cramps that everyone gets every now and then.

I’ve never experienced this until last night when I placed my leg in an awkward position. Immediately the pain was sharp and I felt a hard lump on my calf muscle. I was so worried thinking there was a blood clot. I stood up and tried to walk it off and it was painful but thankfully it slowly lessened. This morning I can extend my toes and expand my calf muscle and still feel some pain. Horrible experience but I will try hydrating more from now on. Don’t want to experience that again.

It sounds like you experienced a muscle cramp, often caused by dehydration or muscle fatigue. Staying hydrated and gently stretching can help prevent future cramps. ❤️

It's so terrible to have cramps at night when you have the deepest sleep and you are so tired...when i have i jump up and i don't dare to go to bed like 30minutes because i know it may happen again and it's so painful expecially when you can't put your leg down, i mean, it doesnt go down i have to push it very strongy so i could but my leg down to the ground. No doctor have never helped me with this problem so i figured my own that it only happens when i had a bad day or very big stress or too much sport or i have been too long in the rain. But for me help magnesium, when i take one i feel better or pillow.

I've seen different Dr's an uncountable amount of times for full body chronic cramping and have zero answers. They get so bad I can't move, random places like my back, sides, arms, chest, stomach, upper legs, toes, just about everywhere and for no reason, just laying on the couch and BAM 4 or 5 muscles will completely lock up. It's not a good life living like this, and with no answers. I'm plenty hydrated, eat a very well balanced diet and get good exercise. All blood work is always spot on and all tests are 100% perfect. Any advice anyone has would be great, Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about the chronic cramping you've been experiencing and the frustration of not finding any answers despite seeking medical help. It can be disheartening when symptoms persist without a clear diagnosis.
Seek a specialist: If you haven't already, you may want to consult with a specialist who focuses on conditions related to muscles, such as a neurologist or a rheumatologist. They may have additional expertise and diagnostic tools to help identify the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Keep a symptom diary: Documenting your symptoms, including when they occur, their duration, and any potential triggers, may provide valuable information to your healthcare provider. It can help identify patterns or factors that could contribute to the muscle cramping.
Consider a second opinion: If you're not satisfied with the answers or progress you've received from your current healthcare providers, seeking a second opinion from another medical professional or a different medical center might be beneficial.
Explore alternative therapies: Alongside traditional medical care, you could explore complementary and alternative approaches such as physical therapy, acupuncture, or massage therapy. These modalities may help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being.
Psychological support: Chronic pain and unexplained symptoms can take a toll on mental health. Consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor who specializes in chronic pain management or coping strategies.
Remember, these suggestions are not meant to replace professional medical advice, and it's crucial to continue working closely with your healthcare providers to find the underlying cause of your symptoms. They will be best equipped to guide you through the diagnostic process and explore potential treatment options.

    • @MedicalCentric
      @MedicalCentric  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Muscle cramps can be a common issue for athletes, including tennis players, especially during high-intensity tournaments. They can occur due to factors such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, overuse of muscles, or inadequate stretching. To help prevent muscle cramps, stay well-hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, warm up properly, and incorporate regular stretching into your tennis routine. If cramps persist or become severe, it's advisable to consult with a sports medicine specialist for a personalized plan to address and prevent them.

Painful sudden cramps at night in one leg, waking up from sleep screaming from pain. Cause (surprisingly) - severe body dehydration. Drink water during the day even if you don't exercise and drink a glass of water before sleep and have a bottle by your bed to sip when awaken.
