I take lithium carbonate, which can cause electrolyte disturbances, and I had trouble with muscle cramps when I first started it. I also found out that I was lactose intolerant around the same time, and my sodium and potassium were low, so, my doctor recommended drinking three servings of almond milk every day, as almonds are naturally really rich in sodium and potassium, as well as calcium. Lo and behold my leg cramps disappeared.

KenDBerryMD OMG! The Keto Chow electrolytes has made a critical difference for me. I was taking 2 1/2 t. Redmond’s Real salt/day and Mag citrate 200 mg/day and it helped with headaches and jaw tension, but one day on the electrolyte supplement it was incredible. Thank you, thank you!

I would have daily body cramps and uncontrolled muscle twitches, but the worst were the upper inner thigh leg cramps. They were so painful that even after they subsided the muscle would feel weak and sore for a few days after. I couldnt exercise or do normal movements without cramping. Doctors checked all my vitamin levels and they were all normal. This was disappointing because I was hoping I had a mineral deficiency but test results showed all mineral levels were good. Dr. said I had "restless leg" and prescribed medication. He didnt really explain why I was having whole body cramps and not just legs altho legs were the worst. The prescription did nothing!!. One day while during a work meeting I had a trademark upper thigh cramp and had to get up in front of everyone and walk back and forth in the room in pain until cramp finally subsided. I was beyond embarrassed but was hurting to bad to care. One of my coworkers showed great compassion and told me something that has changed my life!. She told me to drink 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw unfiltered apple cider vinger with the mother diluted in 6 to 8 oz of water when I get up in the morning and the same thing an hour before bed. I smiled dismissively but got to thinking ive tried everything else. I did research on apple cider vinger with the mothers and decided to try it. I have been taking it for a month and have not had a SINGLE cramp at all since!!. Im not trying to sell anybody anything im just sharing what has brought me relief.

I just want to share my own experience how to resolve the PAIN which is caused by the leg cramp, especially during the night time in bed. I read an article which taught me how to get relief from the pain very quickly. If your right leg cramps with pain, just raise up your left arm straight above your ear. If you have cramps on your left leg, raise your right arm. You can’t raise your arm straight up when your bed has head board, but you can stretch your arm as much as possible above your head. When you do this for a couple minutes, the cramps would stop and you feel the relief from pain. When someone has leg cramps with pain in bed, it is almost impossible to get up to do anything. But this simple action can get you out of this helpless situation staying in bed. I have tried this when I had leg cramps and it always worked. It may sound incredible but only when try it you know it does work. It does not cost you a dime and you won’t have to find someone to help, particularly if you live alone.

I had really terrible leg cramps at night for years but now that I am eating Celtic Sea salt-I put about the size of 3 sesame seeds on my tongue, eat it and then drink water. (Do not put the salt inside your water glass) I also use Celtic Sea salt on my food too. See Barbara O'Neills video Salt & Water to see why eating the salt like that works so well and what it actually does with magnesium and potassium in your body.

This is the most comprehensive explanation I have encountered in decades.
I have passed out a few times because of the pain. My worst was when all muscle groups was firing, never stopping, for over 30 minutes. Yet, did nothing physical that day. Only God escaped my cursing.
Seen multiple medical profession only answers were drinking more water.
I use mineral salts, bolder salt use by marathon runners, lite salts.
This last round of cramping came after a pair of Kenalog and linocaine shot in both knees.
Had a allergenic to it. Multiple reactions.
Thanks for this video. It should be helpful to many

Dr. Berry, l know that you are a strong believer in the no carb, Carnivore diet. But my concern is that the brain needs carbs in order to function & produce DOPAMINE. Without this fuel, the brain cannot function!
A member of my family decided to loose some weight, so she restricted her carbs for 2 yrs. She developed PARKINSON DISEASE!! Even tho we put her on the synthetic DOPAMINE, L-DOPA, she quickly deteriorated & died.
This is a MAJOR red flag for this Carnivore, NO CARB diet!!....

Thank you for the prevention advice. I'm 66 yrs and never had leg cramps and have loved walking and was also a naturally swift walker without need for exertion. A couple of injuries over the years have caught up to my knees now. I have to walk more carefully so as not to get sharp knee pain. My calves are rock hard due to bearing the strain and I get regular horrendous cramping there and thigh high too...usually at night. Magnesium tablets help but also, just as a tip to others who feel they have nothing to hand to immediately help...a hot water bottle or a hot shower directed onto the area helps quite fast. I also have one of those plastic shower heads with a flexible tube that fits over a bath tap for more direct targeting of the cramp area. Sometimes I am not even able to undress without causing more pain so I just get under the shower fully dressed! When cramping up I just don't care! The family can tell by the uncontrollable swearing emitted from this elderly lady leaping out of bed and dragging feet, stiff zombie style along the passage to the bathroom.

I was lucky to meet a physical therapist who when I told him of my occasional "jump out of bed with extreme crippling calf or thigh cramps" instantly gave me a solution that I was very skeptical about.
Two nights ago the cramps attacked both of my legs and I just barely was able ro get out of bed and walk. I kept two 12 ounce glasses of water in my room, drank them and Incredibly in less than 10 minutes, the cramps went away but not the memory of the excruciating pain.

You lucked out finding a competent doctor at the ER. The majority of MDs are incompetent or they ignore the test results and lie and say they can't find anything or everything is "normal" and pass the buck by telling you to follow up with your blah blah blah because they know your regular doctor will just refer to another corrupt doctor during the day and if it's at night just refer you right back to the ER. The old ping pong game. It's how the corrupt jackasses keep the money pipeline flowing. Better count your blessings that you found a doctor that actually did what was in the best interest of the patient which is a rarity in the united states. I wish you a Godspeed.

I was diagnosed with diabetes 18 years ago and put on metaformin. Within a couple years my cholesterol was very high and I was prescribed lipator. Within a couple weeks I was waking up in the middle of the night screaming with muscle cramps in my calves. So bad that it felt like pulled muscles the next day. These continued for a week or so. Then I woke up with a urinary tract infection that was a full blown kidney infection by afternoon. 5 days in the hospital on iv antibiotics, where they woke me up to give me the lipator everyday. A week later one of those commercials for lipator came on TV and listed the side effects, one being urinary tract infections, and another being muscle cramps. I then looked up metaformin and found a major side effect to be raising your cholesterol. I stopped taking both immediately. I had never had an urinary tract infection in my 48 years of life, and have not had one in 14 years since. I found diet and exercise a better control for my diabetes which I managed to keep at pre-diabetes or lower levels for the last 14 years. My cholesterol is still a little high (not dangerously)but I refuse to consider going on the meds for it.

Once the leg (typically calf muscle) cramp starts, apply the following rule: « A STRETCHED MUSCLE DOES NOT CRAMP ». Next time you wake up at night with a starting calf muscle cramp, immediately jump out of bed and stretch the calf. For a few seconds the pain will increase, but a few seconds later, just vanish. Try for yourself and please report back if it works for you. It certainly changed my life.

@@hollylaw8272 I get what you are saying. I’ve been struggling with severe muscle cramps all over my body including in my throat, stomach, hands and fingers, but mostly calves, feet & toes. Often I get these cramps in multiple places simultaneously. The worst will cause me to limp from pain for days afterwards.
When I get them in my legs or feet, one thing that I’ve found helpful is to immediately stand up and put weight on the affected areas. Once it starts to subside, it helps to walk. I also SLOWLY stretch and if I feel the cramp coming back on, I’ll release the stretch and slowly try again. I’ve also heard that shortening the cramping muscle helps. It seems counterintuitive, but it has helped in some cases. I’ll admit, it hurts quite a bit at first, but will ease the cramp. This is usually for those in my foot, particularly the bottom.
The most difficult to work through are the tops of my feet, or the front of my calves, or when everything below my knees cramps, front and back.
Just some things I’ve tried to ease the cramps as they are occurring. I’m going to try these suggestions in this video to hopefully alleviate the almost daily cramps.

talking to a doctor about these things is a great idea, but in my experience, most will dismiss patients who go to them with specific concerns and possible tests they need. If the doctor thinks it is their idea, then it's ok. But when it comes from the patient, it is automatically wrong.

Agreed. My doctor moved out of town this year but I had gone to him for several years and although we would laugh and joke and talk about family, etc, there were times were medically I feel like he just brushed me off or basically used the "wait long enough and it will go away" method. He would do blood work and tell me that everything looks good. I understand he may be hamstrung by insurance and the medical group he's a part of as well but as a patient I sometimes wonder if my body is sending out signals that are being ignored.

I get a cramp, drink the pickle juice and my cramps are gone in less than five minutes. If you want to try before you buy, walk to the frig. during a cramp and simply drink the juice from your dill pickle jar.

I'm so grateful that you have addressed leg cramps, Dr. Berry. I had taken Cipro time after time, and hated the side effects. I asked a prescribing doctor if she thought it was a good medicine, and she said Yes. Then I asked her what she meant by a good medicine. She said it did what it was supposed to do, and she laughed. No knowledge, no concern that my legs were being tortured. Years later, now, I still have Charlie horses so bad, I have actually called 911 over this. To be fair, I am also a type 2 diabetic. But I am convinced that the Ciprofloxacin is huge in my suffering. Because the pain comes at night... sometimes I do not go to bed. I sleep with a couple of bars of high magnesium soap at the foot of the bed between the sheets. I do not tuck in the sheets or blankets. I cannot have my weighted blanket cover my feet while I am in bed. I have a footstool under my legs and feet when I am at my desk. And yes, I do sip dill pickle juice at times. These tips I learned from qualified medical personnel, and they do help me. For anyone reading this, I hope my experiences can help you. Again: Thank You, Dr. Berry !

I was surprised and glad to see you hit on this topic Dr. Berry,
    I have nocturnal leg cramps.
Painful, agonizing, close-to-bringing-tears-to-my-eyes type of cramps.
It happens sporadically. I suffered a bout recently but prior to that it had to be a year the last time it happened.
The cramps can occur anywhere on my legs: quads, hammy's, and calves. Either leg. Sometimes both.
My feet thankfully do not cramp.

I suffered for years, jumping out of bed every hour or two to stretch my calf muscles. I tried everything, magnesium, pottasium, salt, etc. Some worked a little, nothing stopped the cramps. I eventually found that if I kept my legs warm the cramps lessened a lot, so I added a blanket to the lower half of my bed and added an electric heated pad into the foot area. I have this on low all night. These two things helped enormously but I still had cramps a couple of nights a week. Something else I do is take K2. My husband was reading Dr Mercola's "Fat for Fuel", somewhere in there he mentions K2 in relation to leg cramps. I haven't read it. Anyway I started K2, I was already taking D3, and noticed within 2-3 days my cramps had gone completely. When I ran out of K2 the cramps came back so I started taking it again.

I was given statins in my 70's for high cholesterol. In a few months, my legs would ache with extreme fatigue as I walked. In time, I could only walk about 30 steps before I had to stop and rest. This went on for several Dr. prescribed years. I had gained 55 lbs, too. Against Dr's orders, I stopped taking the statin. It took a few months, but I began being able to walk without extreme leg fatigue again. In following months, I had lost that 55 lbs the statin had put on me.

Same here, I refuse to take statins, because every time I was talked or should I say scared into taking them I'd end up being in excruciating pain, and it took sometimes a year to get better. I used to get leg cramps at night. These went away when I did two things: 1) I now take a daily magnesium supplement; and 2) On the rare occasions I feel the tell-tale signs of tightening, I immediately flex my foot to lengthen the muscle. I then stand and walk for a few minutes. Really have not had any problems since then.

I'm on dialysis and sometimes get cramps during treatment. Ingesting mustard was recommended and sometimes this worked. Then I found a topical foam or spray called Theraworx that usually works. Sometimes the nurse will give saline in our line to ease the cramping. Of course when I'm home running hot water on the affected muscle works great. A CKD diet restricts intake of potassium. Thanks for the video. I am now a subscriber!

Best thing I've found for leg cramps is something called sole' water. You dissolve Himalayan or Celtic sea salt in clean water to it's saturation point (make sure some undissolved salt stays in the bottom). It must be stored in a glass jar with no metal touching it. Having it pre-dissolved helps it absorb better. Take 1-3 teaspoons once or twice daily in your daily water intake. Be sure to measure it out and stir it with a non-metal spoon.

Fascinated by your vid on leg cramp. Ultimately, I still think it is something you are 'prone' due to hereditary, and I don't recognise any of the 'suspect' drugs you mention as applying to myself. I suffer terribly and finally got help from my doctor - quinine sulphate, which I take regularly at night. Wonderful! And not enough salt!! Whoa! I never eat salt except for a packet of crisps in the evening. I shall definitely increase my intake. I am convinced that cramp is familial - My mother suffered dreadfully. I still get cramp on occasion however, especially when I have been lifting and carrying at work and am tired. Oh god, it's awful when it does strike and I even get cramp in my thigh muscles and in the abs below the breast area. My mother used to tell me when leg cramp struck, find a cold floor and get the leg down, immediately! Always worked, but one just can't find a cold floor these days!

I began to get severe muscle spasms in my thighs twenty five years ago. They left me bruised and with residual pain for about three days after the episode. If I was walking I would be stopped in my tracks. The spasm could last up to half an hour. I told my doctor and he put me on quinine. It saved my life. But then I was told they could cause heart problems. I could not give them up because of my terror of the cramps. I started taking them every three days and kept tonic water on hand. As I got older the cramps became bored with just being in my thighs and started attacking me across my chest, they would contort my feet and just to be sure that I couldn’t relax I started getting claudication in the back of my upper leg when I tried to go for a walk. It usually happened going up a hill. I learned in have severe spinal stenosis. The neurologist seems very reluctant to operate as the space in my spinal column is 4cm. I cannot live with this kind of pain much longer. It is relentless!

Every time I’d get a shot within a week the cramps were back after 3 weeks they were gone. It takes the potassium from your system. I started to get terrible leg cramps in my sixties.
Mostly in the evening or at night, almost daily.
When sitting, lying in bed or in the bath (really exciting with water splashing everywhere!!!)
I also suffered very bad neck ache.
Early this year I read of a stretching exercise for neck ache & started this morning & evening, and any time my neck ache came on.
Not only did it relieve the neck - I hardly ever get leg cramp any more!
Try it & see if yours improves.
    Stand, feet shoulder-width apart.
Reach above your head, stretching, and look up at your hands.
Move your hands back as far as you can (it will improve after time), and look as far back as you can at the same time.
Hold 2 seconds, then tightening your stomach muscles, arc forward and reach as far toward your toes as you can, pushing your forehead toward your knees.
Hold 2 seconds & then repeat both 5 times.
    Don't forget to breathe!

It is refreshing to hear a Doctor recommend salt, rather than tell us that salt should be reduced. The "salt myth" has been promoted for decades now, it makes me wonder how many medications have been unnecessarily prescribed because a person presents with certain symptoms, that in reality are caused by a salt deficiency. The natural french sea salts are some of the best in my opinion.
For me, cramp relates to magnesium. Magnesium tissue salts always work well, mag phos number 8 by Schuessler Tissue Salts is excellent.

Neighbors have back problems too. I hope my back will heal up. I have also experienced charlie horses at night in both legs and feet and toes. I have learned to flex my feet to stretch the calf muscles. I tried wearing my tennis shoes to bed too and that seems to help. I believe the floors, in my case, are the cause of these problems I'm having with my back and legs. I take magnesium glycinate and have added avocados for potassium. LOVE your videos!!! I am very GLAD that under "#7 Cancer" you also mentioned "autoimmune diseases." Low thyroid is sooo common and for several months I suffered greatly with leg cramps in the early morning hours until I found out my desiccated thyroid dose needed raising! (Maybe this could help someone else - and my TSH was fine, so I am REALLY glad I had my free T3 and free T4 checked. Being at the low end of "normal" wasn't good enough for me.) It wasn't salt or mag because I've used Real Salt for years, and also mag before bed every night for years. I began to suspect my thyroid, so I tried taking it in the evening instead of the morning, and that really helped me get thru the night without cramping! (I take NatureThroid - if I would have been taking Synthroid, I don't think it would make much difference when you take it.) Then the blood test confirmed it. Before I had my thyroid rechecked I did try potassium before bed and it didn't help. But I noticed that it made me have to get up in the night to empty my bladder. Thx again! :)

It was mid-summer and the temperature was close to 110 degrees. I suspected he was dehydrated and I gave him an electrolyte. It worked. He was as good as new within 15 minutes. I encouraged him to drink more water and even gave him a recipe for do-it-yourself homemade Gatorade, which balances your electrolytes and gives you more salt. It works, and it's cheaper than Gatorade and contains less sugar:
    1 cup of apple juice.
    2 cups of water
    Juice from one lemon
    1/2 to 1 teaspoon salt.
Mix it together in a pitcher, refrigerate, and sip it through the day. It tastes like salty lemonade. I feel better when I make this and drink it.

I had an ABI once. The nurse didn't know how to do it. You are supposed to be lying down and she insisted on doing it setting up. Sitting up, it takes more pressure to pump the blood back up through the legs and throws off the index.
I tried telling her that she was doing it wrong. Her response was "Well, this is the way that I do it." I complained to the doctor about it when I went in a few days later and they apparently gave her some remedial training on how to do the test.

New medications seem to cause more side effects than what they're supposed to cure.

My doc asked if meds are working. I said I didn't know. He said how don't you know. Either they're working or they're not. I said I fell the same so they might not be working OR they are working and I'm suffering from their side effects which are the same symptoms I trying to alleviate.
For 5 yrs now they been giving me meds that reportedly have side effects matching my symptoms.

I had an allergic reaction to Lipitor. It caused me to run a low grade fever. I tried 6 different cholesterol meds before finding one where I didn’t have side affects. It was some statin drug. Then I found out that statin meds can cause problems with memory. I thought I was losing my memory. I stopped taking them right away. Now I have to decide which is more important, memory or low cholesterol. Ugh

@@TS-xe9ni Lipitor caused me arm pain. I live in pain so more isn't acceptable, quit taking.
Chiropractor told me he has patient that couldn't walk from pain caused by it.
As one time I am normal and another high, I'm not that worried about it and am not taking anything for it.

I often have cramps in one leg. So did my father and many other elderly people I knew. It was very bad many years ago when I was pregnant. The nurse then gave me some exercises I should do every night before going to bed: ten times up and downs from heel to toe, followed by ten time of squats and last ten times leaning against a door or a wall in order to stretch the lower part of your hind legs. It works and has worked for all of us

I am interested in these exercises but I don’t understand your descriptions. Could you clarify? I understand squats…that’s about it.

Standing, rotate (pivot) from heel to toes and back 10 times; the last one I'm guessing - leaning, facing wall stretch lower legs 10 times to work them before bed?

I was told these same exercises by my osteopath to syretch out the calf muscles. He also suggested sitting on the edge of the bed and slowly touching my toes as I had compressed vertibrae ib lower spine causing years of back pain which he also suspected was involved with the leg oain. Amazingly after about 7/10 days the back pain disappeared and only returns now after over exertion, but has gone again after a nights rest whereas before it was constant.

After stopping stations I continued having severe leg cramps at night for several months. Then I stopped taking artificial sweeteners and within a few days the cramps started to go away. It took weeks before the cramps stopped completely. My cramps were so severe that they damaged a muscle in my thigh.
