b. 13 September 1948, Birmingham, Alabama, USA, d. 23 January 2003, Beverly Hills, California, USA. Carter performed professionally from the age of 11, singing on a local radio show. During the 60s she sang in New York nightclubs. Her stage musicals included Soon (1971), Dude and Dont Bother Me I Cant Cope (both 1972). She starred off-Broadway in Ain’t Misbehavin’, winning an Obie Award, before the show opened on Broadway on 9 May 1978 where it ran until 21 February 1982. For this show, Carter won a Tony Award as Best Featured Actress In A Musical, a Theatre World Award, and a Drama Desk Award as Outstanding Actress In A Musical. She was also in the show’s 1988 revival, this time with her name above the title. Among songs she sang in the show were ‘Cash For Your Trash’, ‘I’ve Got A Feeling I’m Falling’, ‘Honeysuckle Rose’, in duet with Ken Page, and ‘Mean To Me’. In 1997 she took the role of Miss Hannigan in a revival of Annie.
Carter’s film roles, usually minor, included appearances in Hair (1979), Back Roads (1981), Modern Problems (1981), The Grass Harp (1995), The Proprietor (1996), Fakin’ Da Funk (1997), Special Delivery (1999), Perfect Fit (1999) and Back By Midnight (2002). Carter appeared briefly on television in the late 70s in the soap Ryan’s Hope, but her most important exposure was when she appeared in the situation comedy Gimme A Break! (1981-87), also singing the title song. For her role of housekeeper Nell Harper she was nominated twice for a Golden Globe and twice for an Emmy. She was in game shows, such as Match Game and To Tell The Truth (both 1998), dramas, including Sealed With A Kiss (1999) and The Tulsa Lynching Of 1921: A Hidden Story (2000), and situation comedies and series, including episodes of The Misadventures Of Sheriff Lobo (aka Lobo) (1979), Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper (1992), Touched By An Angel and Reba (both 2001) and Ally McBeal (2002).
In her final months, Carter was in rehearsal for the musical, Raisin, based upon A Raisin In The Sun, which was to be staged by International City Theatre in Long Beach, California. She was also working on the movie Swing. Carter’s early death came directly from heart disease although for many years she had suffered from diabetes. Additionally, in the early 90s, she had survived surgery for the removal of aneurysms.
On January 23, 2003, at the age of 54, Carter collapsed and died at her home in Beverly Hills; her son Joshua discovered her body that night. Per a provision in Carter's will, no autopsy was performed. Using blood tests, X-rays, and a cursory physical examination, the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office ruled that Carter's death was the likely result of "probable arteriosclerotic heart disease, with diabetes a contributing condition".
Carter was survived by her partner Ann Kaser, who inherited her property and custody of her two sons. She is buried at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. - บันเทิง
Nell Carter doesn't get the recognition she deserves, her singing was everything!! One of my favorite episodes of "Gimme a Break " was with her and Andy Gibb singing...thanks for this video Scott, you're the best ❤
Hmm not sure about that Nell Carter was incredible. The documentary done about her was sad but beautiful.
I agree..she was a amazing woman
I loved that episode too! Andy is another of my faves, I was young but heartbroken when he passed. Glad to know I'm not alone in liking/remembering that episode!
@@angieburnett4341 ❤
Mr mister was in Andy's band on an episode of midnight special singing i just want to be your everything
My friend met her at a restaurant....she said she was absolutely gracious and down to earth
I remember when she passed away. Doesn't seem like 20 years already. Wow. Thanks for doing this video Scott. I grew up watching Gimme a break every week.
I got to know her. I played piano for Princess Cruises and she was doing weekly shows.

Thanks Scott. Have to give her props, after all of her childhood trauma, she still had the guts to make ìt New York to fulfill her dreams (and, she did alright too) 💜
Exactly! That's why I'm puzzled by those who call her life tragic. It's as if we have all been so brainwashed by fairytales to a point where we've forgotten that we're not living in a Disney movie. To only think of a person in terms of their life challenges as the total sum of their existence is really sick and insulting. Sorry, me thinks I got a bit triggered.🤭
You don't know if all that mess on Google is true
I have always been a fan of Nell Carter. I was watching Gimme a Break this morning. She was such a funny actress and had a voice like no other. Still love hearing her sing.
What kind of music does she sing?
I used to play cards with Nell; she would have a group of sister girls over for food and Spades (a card game) on Friday nights when she lived in Beverly Hills. Outside of Hollywood, she was a cool gal, but tortured because of an effed up childhood. Miss that gal!
Wow that’s amazing you knew her!
@@SCOTTONTAPE I met her through a great friend of mine who was one of Nell's background singers when she would go out on tour; Nell was an opening act for George Benson back in the day...
That is awesome Jackie!
@@JackieSmith31 WOW how AWESOME to play cards with Nell Carter, I bet you will always treasure your golden memories with Nell. God Bless you Jackie! Jesus Loves you! and Jesus Christ is coming sooner than we think.
What a legend. So sad she had such a tragic life. Rest easy Nell.🌹🌹
I grew up in the 80's and never missed an episode of Gimmie A Break. Nel Carter was such a sweet soul. Thanks for this one Scott ❤
She had a one of a kind singing voice! ❤️
Thanks Scott. I used to love to watch Gimmme a break. Nell had pure talent , especially with her singing. Rest in paradise, Nell ❤
Thank you so much for sharing the information. I use to watch the tv show as a kid. Rest well “ Nell”
Loved her as well ..what a sweet talented lady
Scott, I cannot comment unless under someone else's comment , if that makes sense . I don't know what to do ???
Neil Carter Rest in peace.❤
Didn't realize she had so many health issues. It's a shame how it turned out for her. Thanks Scott 👍
RIP to a woman who deserved better in life and more recognition.
There are so many woman in pain but No One takes the time to listen or care. She at least was able to leave a legacy and that a great one at that. She is truly missed as a true legend in TV.
@@thawwtpoettt very true
I use to play piano on cruise ships. Nell was doing weekly shows I got to know her quite a bit. It was wonderful to talk to her. She worked for Princess Cruises.
@@ronaldbaldus4761 Thank you
@@ronaldbaldus4761 awesome. That is great! I would have loved to meet her
Watching her growing up she always made you feel like you knew her. What a likable lady thanks for acknowledging her and for all your videos. You show the upmost respect to everyone. Keep doing what you do!
It’s quite impressive that you are able to read the gravestone that high up and small print. Cemeteries should have little steps available for the graves that are high up, so people can read them and lay flowers or stones by them.
If cemeteries have a form of multi-story crypts, such as at Hillside, the design of them should include like something like a mezzanine level. I'm surprised that your suggestion has never been dealt with by the folks managing the place in Culver City, which I've driven by for yrs.
Agreed! But that would involve the danger of someone falling off of them which would be a liability.
I read about all the trauma she faced and her health issues. Despite everything Nell was able to go to New York, win a Tony and became an actress. I can't even imagine how her 13 year old felt when he discovered her deceased. My prayers go out to her family, I hope her children are doing well. Thanks for sharing her story and her final resting place.
Thank you for this story about Nell Carter, she was a beautiful lady, after all she had been through, here on earth, I pray that she is soaring and singing freely. RIP Nell Carter
Loved Gimme A Break!! Nell had a beautiful voice. I have always thought she didn't get the recognition she truly deserved. Thank you Scott. Appreciate you.
🕊️🙏❤️
Thanks so much for this upload, Scott. A tribute to Carter's "Gimme a Break" co-star, Dolph Sweet would have been nice but he has no grave to visit (cremation, ashes scattered at sea)
Thanks once again Scott for bringing and showing the grave of Nell Carter, such a wonderful women and actress, dearly missed.🇨🇦 R.I.P Nell.🙏🕊️🙏🕊️
I love, miss and adore Nell Carter....she was beautiful, talented and so amazing....this is 20th anniversary of her passing....rest easy lovely lady.💔😢🙏
I didn't realize she had died. The tragedy she endured really surprises and saddened me. As always, Scott, you enlighten us all on the people we grew up on but with the deserved respect and appreciation rightfully deserved. Side note, we grew up only an hour or 2 away, are the same age, and although I left my heart in L.A. the one time I was fortunate to go, I feel a sort of kinship through your travels. You are doing what I would absolutely LOVE to do and am so happy to "come along" through your lense. Thank you! With thanks, love, and praise, from Peterborough Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 ♥️
Thank you so much Amanda! Hello to Pickering ! I’m in scarborough right now as I write this!
dam u didnt know she was dead where do u live under a rock my god
Very underrated actress! One of my childhood favorites.
Another, Great Job!!! 🙌 She lived such a tragic life, but yet, she brought much happiness to her fans. She was a Strong woman.
Awww, I loved Nell on Gimme a Break--she WAS Gimme a Break! Loved her singing, so sorry for all her struggles. Thank you Scott. Love, hugs & God Bless you 💕💕
Ms. Nell Cater, may she rest in peace. What a powerhouse of a singer/performer she was! Even through all the hardships she faced, she persevered. Always appreciate Scott that you show some love to those celebrities that didn’t get as much recognition as they should have. Take care.
Rest In Peace sweet Ms. Nell Carter, thanks for the laughs and years of entertainment.😢
Remember first seeing her at the golden globes in 1991. She opened the ceremony with a medley, where she mixed in the nominated in her song. The chorus was
"Everybody here is a winner" "Everybody here is the best"
"If they gave a golden globe for looking good"
"Each of you would get"
"A statuette"
I fell for her presence right away ❤
She was amazing and I was very sad, when I read that she had died.
Did not know of her hard upbringing and life.😢
Thank you, Scott for telling her story with such dignity and respect 🙏
Such a great and talented actress and singer. Her poor 13-year-old who found her will never be the same. I did go see the Jesus Christ Superstar stage play when it came to Chicago sometime in the early 70's. If she was in the production then, I would have seen her without even realizing it until you mentioned that she was in it in your video. Absolutely great play back then btw! Some people see diabetes as just another age-related illness and not a big deal, but it is a big deal. I believe it contributed to my mother's death. Gimme a Break was another of a line of great sitcoms starting back in the 70's and continuing through the 80's. They don't make em' like they used to anymore. That's probably because they don't make em' like Nell anymore either. RIP to a wonderful ginormous actress who didn't seem to get the credit she deserved in this life but is probably putting on quite a show up there in the afterlife. ❤💐
I know several women who have had heart attacks due to their diabetes. When your blood sugars are out of whack it affects your heart.
Great tribute for this wonderfully talented woman. Thanks Scott. ♥

She had an amazing and wonderful life, actually. Hopefully, she is being remembered for more than the challenges she struggled through. I doubt she would want that. She was way too powerful and inspirational for that.😊

Thank you Scott for sharing her story. .❤I’ve always wondered what happened to her !!
Nell Carter from give me a break back in the 1980s is what I remember about Nel Carter and what a lovely voice she had. The repeats are still on the air and I still watch them.
May she RIP
As a teen from Texas at15 yrs old while my parents took us (brothers and I) on vacation to LA and took a celebrity tour bus in 1987, we were right in front of her vehicle while she was with Telma Hopkins. Both ladies were so gracious and waved at us, which made me love both Nell C and Telma H. even more. ❤ Dispite everything, both had a heart of gold. On the hand Gregory Peck flipped the bird at three young Mexican adolescents and didn't stop honking his horn with his finger up in the air at a 15 yr old girl, 10 yr old boy and a 5 yr old. 💔
Thank you for remembering this beautiful icon.❤
Thanks for Sharing!!! She was so much a part of my childhood! may she rest in peace!💜🙏
