Kobe Bean Bryant (/ˈkoʊbiː/ KOH-bee; August 23, 1978 - January 26, 2020) was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time, Bryant won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and a two-time NBA Finals MVP. Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice, and ranks fourth in league all-time regular season and postseason scoring. He was posthumously voted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020 and named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.
At 9:06 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on January 26, 2020, a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter departed from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, with nine people aboard: Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, six family friends, and the pilot, Ara Zobayan. The helicopter was registered to the Fillmore-based Island Express Holding Corp., according to the California Secretary of State business database. The group was traveling to Camarillo Airport in Ventura County for a basketball game at Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks.
Due to light rain and fog that morning, the Los Angeles Police Department helicopters and most other air traffic were grounded. The flight tracker showed that the helicopter circled above the L.A. Zoo due to heavy air traffic in the area. At 9:30 a.m., Zobayan contacted the Burbank Airport's control tower, notifying the tower of the situation, and was told he was "flying too low" to be tracked by radar. At that time, the helicopter experienced extreme fog and turned south towards the mountains. At 9:40 a.m., the helicopter climbed rapidly from 1,200 to 2,000 feet (370 to 610 m), flying at 161 knots (298 km/h; 185 mph).
At 9:45 a.m., the helicopter crashed into the side of a mountain in Calabasas, about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, and began burning. Bryant, his daughter, and the other seven occupants were all killed on impact. Initial reports indicated that the helicopter crashed in the hills above Calabasas in heavy fog. Witnesses reported hearing a helicopter struggling before crashing.
On January 28, Bryant's identity was officially confirmed using fingerprints. The following day, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner stated that the official cause of death for him and the eight others on the helicopter was blunt force trauma.
The Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board, and the FBI launched investigations into the crash. The cause of the crash was hard to investigate, as the helicopter was not equipped with a black box. Over a year after the crash, on February 9, 2021, the NTSB declared that pilot Ara Zobayan probably became disoriented after deciding to fly into thick clouds. The five board members also said Zobayan, who also died in the crash, ignored his training and violated federal regulations during the 40-minute flight.
On February 7, Bryant and his daughter were buried in a private funeral in Pacific View Memorial Park in the Corona del Mar neighborhood of Newport Beach, California. A public memorial service was held on February 24 (2/24, marking both Kobe's and Gianna's jersey numbers) at Staples Center with Jimmy Kimmel hosting. Speakers at the service included Vanessa, Jordan, and O'Neal, along with Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi and Geno Auriemma, Taurasi's coach at Connecticut, where Gianna had been aspiring to play

@Scott I remember that day like it was yesterday. You covered this beautifully. It’s so important to remember that there were nine people who lost their lives that day in that horrific tragic accident, and the people who love them still miss and mourn them.
It’s amazing that even though the City of Calabasas won’t allow a more permanent memorial at the site that the public will still come to mourn the loss of their person and his child.
May all those who perished that day be at peaceful rest. May The Black Mamba and La Mambacita still feel the love of their fans.

Thank you for hiking all that way and treating this so respectfully. The day this happened I had just opened the store where I worked when 2 couples came in. When greeted with “Hello, how are you all?” one of the ladies said “We just saw a helicopter crash!” The store is just off the freeway and over the hill from Calabasas. One of the women kept her phone out while they all shopped and only about 15mins. later ran up to our desk saying “It’s Kobe Bryant’s helicopter- he’s dead!”
I didn’t believe it right away but then it seemed everyone who came in the store that day told us it was true. And that his daughter was with him. And 7 others. OMG.
I was never a huge Kobe fan until I went to a playoff game and saw him play. His undeniable greatness earned my respect. The future greatness possible in Gigi and the other girls is so very sad not to look forward to. Kobe was doing so much for womens b ball. RIP all nine people denied their futures in this tragic way.

I only watch these types of videos from you, Scott. You always have the utmost respect and never exploit the situation. Thank you, once again for a beautiful job well done. Also, I can understand his widow not wanting to tell where her loved ones are resting....but fans do need a place where they can go to say thank you. That is why memorials are so important.

That's great that you made it up there scott. And without any exaggeration at 15 minutes and 59 seconds for you to mention that there were seven other people that were killed in this tragedy. The Altobelli's lost the mother, father and daughter and one of her friends. Many people are still suffering after this. The neighbors the coworkers and of course family members of all those people. Why do you think the city said not to put a statue there? Thanks again Scott be safe out there see you later.

Hey Scott. I was at home when I heard. I never watched basketball or really knew anything about the Lakers but I knew who Kobe was. And maybe it’s my age, or the fact I’m also a parent, but for some reason it hit me hard when he passed. It was so tragic and even I could feel the loss his death had on our world. But I do try to think of everyone else who passed too. They all have loved ones who were greatly impacted by their loss as well. I hope they are all at peace. Very respectful video. Thank you.

I had just gotten out of church. My husband picked me up that Sunday, and when I opened my passenger door to get in, he looked at me with a blank look on his face (the kind of look you don't ever want to see) and said "Kobe is dead! He died this morning in a helicopter crash". I gasped and covered my mouth in disbelief. After I got into the car and pulled out my phone to confirm what I had just heard .. my emotions began to take over. I am a huge Laker fan and I have always loved Kobe. I just couldn't believe it. Princess Diana's death is the one that got me the most. Being nearly the same age, and at the time of her engagement, she gave hope to those of us girls who were slightly pudgy, more cute than beautiful. Then to watch her bloom and blossom despite her life in the background. I stayed up all night watching the news..when the news broke as a crawl on the bottom of the screen as I watched Saturday Night Live. It was a night I will never, ever forget.

You Were Extraordinary Respectful To His Family... This Was Very Moving To Me!! - Watching From NC

I was getting my daily coffee from my spot. My girlfriend looked at me with watery eyes and said “bro Kobe died?” And I have a little cousin named Kobe so I thought she was talking about him so I got on my phone so fast and Kobe Bryant’s face was everywhere. May all 9 of these beautiful people forever Rest In Peace. I was a huge Kobe fan. Thank you for doing this.

Such a tragedy. An immense loss of life and hope and talent. My heart breaks for the families of all lost that day. I’d imagine it was terrifying for them in their last moments. Not only did we lose such talented adults, but to lose the children as well……sometimes just don’t understand why things happen. 💜💛🖤

Scott, the impact site is actually further up that trail, the "make shift" memorial was put on the wrong location and just keep getting added to. If you would have walked another 25-40 feet you would see the actual I impact spot of where the blade hit the ground you can actually make the hole thing out when you see it. Great video as always though. I was there a year ago and saw it with an helicopet pilot from LA. The visibility was bad and thats why he lost control. Good job keep doing what you do!

When you said “further up” do you mean looking up the hill or continuing to walk around the corner as in past where the memorial is? Thank you.

You are the best! Feel like I’ve known you all my life. A friend texted me while I was taking the stage to sing on a Sunday afternoon at a dive bar. Never forget it.

It’s one of those days you will never forget. Was driving home when my son’s phone got the notification from ESPN. The rest of the day was listening to stories about all of them. Just in disbelief. May they all RIP.

January 26th is my birthday - I woke up to check for birthday messages and I saw the news. I spent the whole day glued to social media and the news. My birthday has never been the same since - I always think of this tragic event on that day now 😢

Very heartbreaking and tragic!! My then 17 year old daughter and I were on our way home after watching a movie at a theater in Chesapeake, VA when we heard the breaking news over the radio. I brought to tears by the thought of him passing away along with his daughter.

That day I woke up close to the time the accident happened. I remember waking up like if I was late to work. I got up and went outside. Then my mom told me that my brother had herd about the crash. And I went on Twitter to confirm. I cried so much right after. I named my daughter Gianna before the tragic. Kobe is culture for LA. We love him and remember till this day, wish you were alive.

Excellent vid Scott, you really did well with this one to get all the way up there. That is indeed a hike and the fact you did it on a summer day wearing a black T-shirt man, mad respect to you. Mad respect also for Kobe and the others who passed away in that accident. It was truly shocking.
I'd love to see you do a revisit of the Woodstock concert field in Bethel, NY if you're over that side of the country again at any stage. I know you posted a vid of that some years back when you were there but I'd love to see a new vid of it.
