While watching television with his wife, Jose and Kitty Menendez were murdered in the living room of their Beverly Hills home by their sons, Erik Galen and Joseph Lyle Menendez. Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944, the youngest son of three children to an upper-middle class family, his father was a popular soccer player who owned his own accounting firm, while his mother was a swimmer who was elected to Cuba's Sports Hall of Fame. Although not considered wealthy, his parents were well regarded in the pre-Castro Cuban society. When Castro came into power in 1959, the Menendez family decided to leave Cuba for the United States, and a year later, they emigrated to Hazleton, Pennsylvania, where Jose studied in high school, and excelled in athletics. In his senior year of high school, Jose won a four year scholarship in swimming to Southern Illinois University. In his freshman year at SIU, Jose met SIU senior Mary Louise "Kitty" Andersen. They soon fell in love, and following Kitty's graduation from SIU with a BS Degree in Communications, they moved to New York City, where Jose obtained an athletic scholarship from Queens College. Over the next twenty years, Jose would work in the film industry in Princeton, New Jersey, where his two sons, Joseph and Erik, were born, and then in California, where he joined the Carolco Film Company. The Menendezes were killed in the early evening of August 20, 1989, in their home while watching television. Their two adult sons, who were home from college during summer break, were supposedly out at a movie. As police reconstructed the crime scene, Jose was hit in the back of the head from a 12-gauge shotgun, killing him instantly. Kitty got up and ran for her life, getting hit several times, but not fatally. Running out of ammunition, the boys went back to the car to reload, then returned to the living room where they fired a total of ten shots into their mother, including one at point blank range against her face. The two boys then left to watch the James Bond movie, "License to Kill," and called the police when they returned home to report finding their parents dead. Initially police thought the two sons innocent and searched for other killers. As a wealthy executive for the Carolco Film Company, Jose was reportedly not well liked by his co-workers, and when his death was first reported, many of his fellow workers believed the initial reports that it was a mob hit. Upset about his part in the killings, Erik would later confess to a friend about the murders, and then told his therapist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, who taped their conversation. Dr. Oziel mentioned the murders and tapes to his girlfriend. Later, after having a fight with him, Oziel's unidentified girlfriend stole the tapes and gave them to police in an attempt to get Oziel in trouble for concealing a crime. After their arrests, the two young men claimed that their parents sexually abused them, and to escape the abuse, the boys killed them. Police found evidence that indicated both Joseph and Erik wanted their inheritance, estimated to be several million dollars, and decided to kill their parents to get it. In the first six months following their parents' deaths, the two men spent over $1 million in a wild spending spree. Following their conviction for premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder, both men were given consecutive life sentences without benefit of parole, and both men will spend the remainder of their lives in prison. As February 2018, both brothers are housed in the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California. Both Kitty and Jose are buried in the Princeton Cemetery in Princeton New Jersey.
Hello Scott and Glen. This was such a tragic case. I don't believe for one second that either of these boys were abused. I think it's quite the opposite. I think they were spoiled little rich kids who thought they were entitled to whatever they wanted and figured out a way to get it. I think that anyone who did this as justification for being abused would still be traumatized by the events of what happened. They were out celebrating them instead. That speaks volumes to me. I feel so sorry for these parents who probably gave them the world and the world still wasn't good enough for these two. It's even sadder to me to think that they gave birth to their own killers. RIP to these parents whose lives were extinguished for nothing less than greed. Just heartbreaking 💔💐

I 100% believe the brothers suffered years of horrific sexual abuse while their mother assisted the father in abusing them. There is also tons of physical evidence and proof of the sexual abuse. Free the brothers!!

I remember when those murders happened in 1989.I was only 10 years old but my parents would watch the news and remember seeing it.Very sad situation.

So many people always say how could they go shopping etc. what exactly were they supposed to do? They were so scared and traumatized. They were suffering from PTSD and they killed their abusers. Hi Scott. I'm planning on visiting The Princeton Cemetery in June. Former President Grover Cleveland is burined there. Arron Burr. And yes, The Menendez. I'm looking forward to it. About 90 minutes from there is where Jayne Mansfield is buried. Also about 10 miles from Princeton in East Brunswick, NJ is where Colonel Walter Fetterley is buried. He was a WWII hero. Interesting story. He rescued American prisoners from a German camp. British soldiers were there as well. IT was Fetterley's job to get them out. It was a band of people from different divisions. Even had help from the regular German soldier. Not Nazi, just the regular German soldier. Interesting guy. After the war he had a family business. Versatile guy.

I remember when this story hit the news, it was both haunting and riveting. Then when the Billionaire Boys Club TV movie came out I was absolutely glued to the screen.
This case was so widely covered on the news back in the day. This was pre-OJ trial. Didn’t realize they were buried in NJ. Glenn added a lot of information. Great job.
In the 80’s my sister in law was murdered by her husband. His side said she was messing around with different guys and the judge screamed at his side saying you are attacking someone who is no longer here and can not defend them self’s. They said that was the number one wrong thing to do in trying to defend yourself. He and his buddies were found guilty given 40 years and the husband died in prison. In Mendenez kids they could have walked out on their home and moved far far away but money was their motive.

I just heard one of the Menudo members is making accusations about Jose
Ew. That man violently sexually abused his sons. And she knew about it and also verbally abused them their whole lives. Their own close friends and relatives including their siblings and their kids (cousins) testified to the abuse. The parents had literally no witnesses testify to their character in any way that wasn’t negative and abusive. No respects deserved to child abusers.

Agree!!!! The cousin even found letters ( too bad after the trial) that Eric had written him about the abuse. Yearsssss before these murders took place. It was definitely Eric’s hand writing as well. Eric was reaching out for help way before this happened! I love Scott. I guess we will just have to just agree to disagree on this. Way too much evidence supporting the horrendous abuse!!

I did not know Jose and Kitty were buried in New Jersey. Thank you, Scott for the respectful and reverential way you always treat true victims. I could not keep a dry eye in your coverage of the three little boys in West Memphis.
You haven't followed the case. The boys had numerous teachers, coaches, neighbors, friends and so on who ALL stated the abuse and neglect the parents did to the boys. You have to a blind and heartless when listening to the two boys on the stand telling their stories of the abuse being raped, groomed and abused sexually and physically starting at an early age. The boy celebrated because of the torture and pain they endured their entire life. They had their freedoms finally. It is so sad that anyone who can say these boys did it for money. Erick wanted to leave his home when he was going to college and never return. The father would not allow it. He was told he would have to come home at nights so the father could continue the abuse! The father raped a young man in the boy bands he managed who is speaking out now. One of the brothers wrote his cousin which the letter has been uncovered now since the cousin died and the family uncovered it. They will have another case to free them. The parents are MONSTERS!!!

I agree. I was thinking the best way for Erik to leave town and to disown his parents was to join the military where he could've been sent far away and to invest for a college fund. But then, he feared his father Jose and Erik felt too much emotionally controlled by him

I rarely comment on any videos, but I had to express myself here. I respect Scott, and all the work he does on this channel. I respectfully disagree with many, I do feel the two boys were abused. I have read through all the evidence, testimonies, and followed the trial. I do not agree with much of what the boys did, and how they handled this situation. they should have never murdered their parents. I do understand their (Lyle & Erik) pain, and control that their father put on them. I am an abuse survivor. It may look like something totally different on the outside to many, It may look like like everything is perfect. In reality you are going through so much, and being hurt by people who are supposed to love you. I understand we all have our opinions and I truly respect everyone's opinion on this case...Please just educate yourself on the facts and evidence in the case, then make a decision. Look beyond what is on the outside. < 3

Unless anyone here has had extensive psychiatric training, including all aspects of behavioural issues,then you really can't categorically say the Brothers were not abused. People do strange things when pushed to the limit,including murder,the way someone acts after the fact has absolutely no bearing on why the act was committed, in the same way People grieve differently. No one here can say they were or weren't abused, mentally, physically or sexually. Because no one here was there.

They could have simply moved out, gotten jobs and paid their own way instead of mooching off of their parents. Everyone has their own opinion but as a survivor of sexual abuse I truly believe the brothers. I’ve watched every single video about the trial among other videos about the family and there are other people not close to the boys that said things you just can’t make up. Facts are facts.

Also today it’s just come to light that one of the members of the boy band Menudo has come forward to say he was drugged and raped as a young man by their father, while he worked at RCA records……….this information at the time would of changed the trial .

They had 51 friends of the family, relatives, and business associates of the father that testified on the brothers behave concerning the sexual abuse.

Well I believe them, cuz one of their cousins testified that when one of the brothers was around 10 or 11 yrs. Of age, he told them that their Dad Jose abused them.

Kitty and Jose Melendez abused their sons. It’s a shame everyone in this comment section feels bad for them and makes them look like they were good parents. There is so so so much proof and photographs, witnesses, their literal body language has been studied by experts and they have spoken about this case. They already had money before the murders, which is something that their family said, so money was never an issue. Although I do agree that spending all of that money after their parents’s death wasn’t a good choice, people grieve differently, and to an extent where we don’t understand the reasoning as to why they did it and consider it weird. I hope that people in this comment section believe the abused over the abusers in the future and in other cases.

I think you’re wrong. There are pictures of those boys that should never exist in a loving family. Pictures of their genitalia. Now, someone else has come out and said Menendez abused him badly. How much evidence do you need to say “murder is never justified…but, these boys were abused”? You’d probably believe if they were girls.

Have you heard about the documentary that comes out next month on Peacock called "Menudo+Menendez: Boys Betrayed"? One of the former band members claims Jose Menendez drugged and SA him. I agree the Menendez brothers did what they did out of greed but, depending on how credible the other young man's story is, it's possible Jose Menendez may have abused at least one boy. Still doesn't justify what Lyle and Eric did to him, and especially to Kitty.
The prosecution could never prove the greed theory (even the jury in the second trial did not believe that money was the motive) and none of the money they spent came from the estate. There was a lot of evidence of abuse and that the brothers feared their parents (much of which was blocked by the prosecution and the judge in the second trial). Kitty was abusive to her sons and did not protect them. The defense never argued that the killings were justified, they were just trying to explain why it happened.
People are very jealous of the rich.
I think they kill their dad not cause they were greedy but because they had enough of the sexual abuse they endured because of the father. Also they killed their mother because she knew they were being molested by their own father and did absolutely nothing.

A story came out today of the dad raped a 14 yr old from the music group Menudo.

The father graduated from my High School in Hazleton, PA in 1961-I do have a copy of the yearbook. My boss before I graduated in 1979, was also a 1961 graduate of Hazleton, but passed away in 2015....

I agree as well. Members of the family testified to their first hand accounts and recollections of the brothers telling them about it when they were little. That was waaay before the case. Kitty’s own psychologist testified that she was an angry, hateful, woman that blamed her children for her unhappiness. She told him that she never wanted to be a mother. Makes sense that she used her kids as a reprieve from Jose any chance she got.
It doesn’t mean I agree with their murder. I’m saying that because I promise you someone is reading this right now and is angry typing that I’m a monster. Quite the contrary. I’m just an adult that is also healing from being raised by the daughter of a narcissist that also turned a blind eye when it was convenient. Remember, they told many adults about the abuse and nothing was done because everyone was terrified of Jose. Not recognizing those elements of this story is intellectually dishonest.
People don’t understand that not all parents are good people and that sometimes saying “good riddance “ might sometimes be applicable.
Another victim of Jose Menendez has come forward. I long suspected that he was one of the men who abused the Latin boy band Menudo (where Ricky Martin got his start) and now it has been confirmed. It's so surprising to see this video uploaded today, the same day that the news broke.

Great video Scott but I think you're wrong. I have done a lot of research and I believe them 100%. If you look at the evidence, even the stuff that has come out recently, I think those boys went thru hell. Shouldn't have killed their parents, there were other ways to get help, but I think they reached their limit and snapped.

I've HAD disagreements with parents but would never kill them. I had loving parents. Scott i love how you care so much for your viewers. I took care of my mom so she would.nt have to go to a nursing home and i feel good that i was abler to be there for her.❤Vickie

I do believe that the father abused the boys. One of the boys told his cousin that the father was abusing him as a child. The abuse could explain their psychosis at the time of the murders. They have relatives who believe that the father abused them.

Did you see where a member of Menudo just came forward to say that the father, Jose Menendez, repeatedly drugged and raped him as a 14 year old child, too?
I 100% believe the brothers suffered years of horrific sexual abuse while their mother assisted the father in abusing them. There is also tons of physical evidence and proof of the sexual abuse. Free the brothers!!
Others have come forward to verify their story.

Thanks so much for this upload, Scott. Erik and Lyle Menendez should continue to be "warehoused" and simply forgotten. Their defense of "abuse" was the only one they had, the way they demonized their parents was reprehensible, in particular, even accusing their own mother of sexual abuse. Correction: I don't think "Kitty" Menendez was a native of Cuba, it's kind of ironic that their graves are in the shadow so such a middle class looking neighborhood, considering the luxury they lived in when they were murdered.

@@glm557 There was also corroborative testimony of Jose and Kitty's abuse of their sons. In fact most of the brothers' teachers and coaches were afraid of the parents.

If the abuse claims from the band member gets proven .. There is a chance of these two abused children having some sort of life.. That was stolen by everyone around them. They grew up with evil in their lives.

Scott I’ve watched the trial back when it happened and then again recently I starting watching it a 2nd time. The reason I’m watching it again was because just very recently one of the band mates from the Puerto Rican band Menudo had came out to the world to say that Jose Menendez drugged him and rapped him at the Menendez home in New Jersey back in the early 80s when he was 14. I always believed the Menendez brothers about the allegations against their father. I suggest you dig into the case yourself…watch both of the trials. Regardless that their father molested them, murder is still murder and they deserved to go to prison. But these brothers have spend nearly 34 years in prison, suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their father, so I believe they should be let out now because they’ve been punished enough. Child molesters serve lesser time than they have and child molesters are the scum of the earth. Jose and Kitty are exactly where they belong….period.
I do not understand why people would do things like this. Unless the person or people are being abused. I never really paid that much attention to this case, but it is very sad.
