This movie was rated PG before PG-13 existed, so it meant something back then. Funnily enough, the PG-13 rating was created for Temple of Doom.
For good reason. That ceremony scene was pretty damn intense!
Strange thing, really. It's rated 15 and up in Norway
In Canada, it is rated 14A. The rest are PG in Canada (yes, even Temple of Doom). It has to do with the fact that Canada has various provincial boards for theatres, and one national board for home video. There were different symbols and ratings used in various provinces as the Home Video system wasn't created until 1995. It uses 5 categories, which are:
G (Suitable for all ages.)
PG (Parental guidance is advised. Theme or content may not be suitable for all children.)
14A (Suitable for viewing by persons 14 years of age and older. Persons under 14 must be accompanied by / should view with an adult. No rental or purchase by persons under 14. Parents cautioned.)
18A (Suitable for viewing by persons 18 years of age and older. Persons under 18 must be accompanied by / should view with an adult. Persons under 14 are strictly prohibited from viewing this film in the cinema. No rental or purchase by persons under 18. Parents strongly cautioned.)
R (Restricted to persons 18 years of age and older. No rental or purchase by persons under 18. Content not suitable for minors.)
What happened starting in 1995 is that they would tally up the equivalent ratings from the systems of Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, ans Prince Edward Island and whichever rating it was given more of is the final rating it gets on home video. Even though BC and SK share a system (which apparently now includes MB and ON) and all the Maritimes share one, they all still count separately. Basically if a movie gets 5 PGs and 3 14As, then the movie will be PG on home video. Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan started using the home video symbols starting in 1997, then Manitoba and Ontario adopted them in 2003, and the Maritimes adopted them in 2005 .
The only problem is that with some equivalent ratings not existing at the time of old movies, and the system becoming more lenient over the years, there's a lot of movies rated higher than they would be today. That affects the older movies in theatres, because with movies like Die Hard, in some provinces, YOU HAVE TO BE 18 OR OLDER TO BE ADMITTED. Stupid. They should really change that.
No, it is the other way around. The Temple of Doom, along with Gremlins and Poltergeist, which are all rated PG by the MPAA, caused the creation of the PG-13 rating.

16:40 this iconic scene was even not supposed to happen. In the script this part would be an amazing fight between Indy and the swordsman, but Harrison was recovering from terrible foodpoisoning that day and wasn't able to do the fighting. Instead he improvised and just shot the man. Steven loved this improvising so much he kept the shot and put it in the final product!
Also, love your review. But....you do know that Harrison did most (maybe all) of his stunts by himself? Or am I wrong, did he have a stuntman? I don't know anymore:)
About the Arc deaths of the main 3 antagonists. This movie is rated PG yes, but the original version of this scene was réally pushing it. The one difference between the original and the final was that Belloc's death wasn't covered with flames! So you clearly saw how his head exploded. The makes realized they may have been overdoing it, considering the scene already had a face melt and a face shrunk! So in order to make it 'less gruesome' they covered Belloc's head explosion with a layer of flames :/
I don't know how they thought it would make a difference, though. You STILL see what happenes and there is still the face melt and the face shrunk.....so yeah. PG

Final note: I may sound ridiculous but I found Donovan's death in The Last Crusade even more horrifyng. This guy not only ages rapidly within seconds, but also decomposes, rots and turnes into dust while (as far as I'm concerned, by hearing the sounds he makes!) being alive during this progress!
I actually think all of the major deaths in these movies are equally brutal.

14:28 Well suspect, Indie here is carrying a revolver in either .357 magnum, or .44 magnum. Both of those guns have considerable kick, and will send someone cartwheeling backwards. After my Uncle passed away, I was given his .357 Service Six police revolver. Its still my favorite hand gun to shoot.

The novelization reveals that Marion was only fifteen years old when she and Indy (who was in his twenties at the time) began their relationship. This explains her "I was a child! It was wrong and you knew it!" comment.
The novelization also reveals that the headpiece to the Staff of Ra is engraved with a warning not to look inside the Ark of the Covenant (it's also in the Bible), which is how Indy knew to close his eyes when the Nazis opened it, and the rivalry between Indy and Belloq goes all the way back to graduate school where Belloq stole Indy's research while Indy was conducting his extracurricular activities with his academic advisor's daughter, which also explains why Marion and Belloq are on a first name basis.
The novel also reveals how Indy managed to stow away on a submarine without drowning (he used his whip to tie himself to the periscope.)
According to the script, Abner Ravenwood was killed in an avalanche.
Also in the novelisation, the base and the U-boat, along with its crew were destroyed by the Ark, which is how they were able to escape with no hassle.
The old imam in the film also mentions the warning
So how did Indy and Marian get off the island? Was there any spare boats? Did the communication equipment still work?

Sub's only go underwater when entering combat, for normal travel, they stay on the surface.
The - Gaming - Chespin I love this movie, don't get me wrong but, why would that stop them from going underwater anyway? Waste of fuel?
Except at one moment, before the animated travelmap appears, the U-boat captain says "Tauchen das U-Boot."

Nuclear subs can stay under as long as the food lasts as they get air via electrolysis splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen and can run on massively more powerful motors with nuclear power.
This movie really inspired me too, not only to appreciate archeology of all kinds, but as a filmmaker and it will always be proof that care makes better movies than predicted success.

I recently got back into VHS collecting including Disney films to add to my collection, and I have just obtained the whole Indiana Jones trilogy for a dollar. They take me back to the adventure and wonder of the quintessential films from the brilliant Steven Spielberg. Great to have you review this awesome trilogy and make my day at school. Great Couch Tomato and friends cameos, and nice editing. This is one of my favorite reviews from you! :D

This was made back when PG actually meant something
But PG films have stuff that push some stuff for the rating..... THIS HOWEVER HAS INTENSE SCENES TOO MUCH FOR a PG! Should have been rated R! The main reason for the lower rating is cause Steven and George aimed for the younger oriented James Bond movie! This doesn't mean it's MEANT for kids or filmed for kids but is a homage to old tv western Indian Cowboy shows and is why it's so frantically violent! Also Also, Steven is always pushing the rating with every one of his movies.... the first one that 100% was wrongly rated was Jaws. That and the first two sequels should have been R!

Raiders was PG in America as well but the PG-13 rating didn't exist yet. Temple of Doom was also PG however it was one of the films that invented PG-13. What was the rating system in England like at the time this movie came out? did the 12 or 15 ratings exist?
The movie came out in 1981, at which point the ratings system in the UK looked quite different from the current one:
U - Suitable for children
A - Those aged 5 and older admitted, but not recommended for children under 14 years of age
AA - Suitable for those aged 14 and older
X - Suitable for those aged 18 and older
When it first came out, Raiders had an 'A' rating. The following year, in 1982, the whole system was overhauled as follows:
U - Suitable for all
PG - General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children
15 - Suitable for those aged 15 and older
18 - Suitable for those aged 18 and older
R18 - For the porn industry
Everything which had an 'A' rating under the old system - including Raiders - got re-rated PG. Somewhere along the line, "Not recommended for under-14s" got changed to "Not recommended for under-8s", but older films that already had PG certificates retained them anyway. Perhaps a '12' certificate would have made more sense, but that didn't exist yet (and wouldn't exist until 1989).
(BTW, it's a similar story with Temple of Doom. It had a PG rating on release, although cuts had to be made in order to avoid a 15 rating (so, no still-beating heart being ripped out, for example). It was only in 2012 that the uncut version was released on video, with a 12 rating)

Going off of what you were talking about in regards to the movie's PG rating, in America, Raiders was made before the PG-13 rating (America's equivalent of the 12 rating) was established. Back then, Raiders could only be rated a PG or an R. Ironically enough, it was the reaction to Temple of Doom that got the PG-13 rating established.

Hi Suspect! Just wanted to point out a small correction. When Indie boards the Nazi U-Boat and rides it to the island, it’s actually highly unlikely that the U-Boat ever submerged, as back then they were really just surface vessels with the capability to dive for about 20 minutes max (due to things like limited oxygen, communication, hull integrity, etc.), which was very useful for avoiding bombers or patrols, or torpedoing enemy ships, but wasn’t used for long distance travel.
Outstanding video as always Suspect, you never fail to make me laugh. Every single joke was on point, I couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole video. Also I like how you do also point out plot holes as I'm terrible at noticing plot holes in films. All of these reasons is why you're still my favourite TH-cam channel XD

Anyone else also notice how Indi's gun changes from a revolver at the start of the bar fight to a 1911 or similar semi auto pistol? I mean I suppose there is a chance that he was carrying multiple pistols but we have only seen him with revolvers so far in the movie.
In defense of the uboat scene, they aren’t fully fledged submarines, and can’t stay submerged for long, so they wouldn’t be under the water.

During filming in Tunisia, nearly everyone in the cast and crew got sick except director Steven Spielberg. It is thought that he avoided illness by eating only the food he'd brought with him: a lot of cans of Spaghetti-O's.
Most of the "body blow" sounds were created by hitting a pile of leather jackets with a baseball bat.
Many of the snakes in the Well of Souls are not snakes, but legless lizards (look for the earholes, which snakes lack).

This Friday, Last Crusade is playing at a theater in town. Whilst searching for my brown fedora (of which I will be wearing) I reminisced fondly of your pure joy and nerdy enthusiasm in this intro. So I just came by to say thank you and you singing the theme is going to be everyone in that theater.
