Cornelius Gurlitt was the man behind it and we investigate how his father's job was to purchase works for Hitler himself as part of the so-called Führermuseum. Wow!! Over 1400 masterpieces, and from some of the greatest artists known!! Just wow... this documentary left me shaking from the shock of the size of works recovered, and amazed and dazzled by cold and raw revelation that someone could hoard and hide without panic, so valuable and immensely rare an art collection of this historic importance for such a long period of time without discovery. Names like Vermeer, Picasso, Matisse, Manet, Cezanne, Monet, van Gogh, Renoir, Klimmt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Kahlo... these names worth their value in gold, if not priceless are some of which were found in this collection and stacked together is simply mindboggling! The persons participating in this investigation in whichever caliber are some of the luckiest on earth and I bet they acknowledge it to the born that they are effing lucky to be in the thick of it.
Totally. That something of that scope was in hiding, stashed away for so long! It is indeed mind-boggling. I remember very well when the news broke as I was in Germany at the time. Just wow.
Its not that surprising really when you consider the psychology of the hoarder. Reclusive, introverted and taught from an early age to be secretive and private. Its a perfect recipe for things not coming to light. .........just saying
Except Austria gave back the Klimts inherited by the living descendants of Adele Bloch-Bauer, “The Woman in Gold”, after an American lawyer, grandson of the Austrian composer Schoenberg who went into exile abroad before the Anschluss, challenged Austria in the US Supreme Court. The 2017 film starred Ryan Reynolds as lawyer Schoenberg & Helen Mirren as Maria Altman, a Holocaust survivor.
While Austria has definitely not been the shining beacon of art restitution, they have picked up the pace and returned several collections and works of art over the years.
What a sad life his son had to live. I agree the original owners need to be compensated. I cannot believe they beautiful fantastic paintings that had been stolen by his father then him all these years.
To be real though we are kind of Lucky the Germans kept some of it. Good thing they did not destroy all of it and who knows what might have become of them if they were just left in the homes of the Jews and others after they were taken.
I wonder what would have happened if Cornelius had disclosed his fathers collection to the public and authorities at the moment he came in possesion of it. I doubt he would have lived the sad and guilty life and died the lonely death that he did in the end
I'm totally shocked and and can't believe the magnitude of the woks of art found I think the only word is wow and we'll done to all the people involved
This happened in 2012, BS, this dude was either setup, or he is the James Bond of all time. How did he own two houses and an apartment and did not have health insurance? I could go on and on but please, that old man was the nefarious crime lord of art. HuH !!! How convenient he dies a year after his arrest.
The fact he did not have insurance may actually be explicable considering Germany has nationalized health care and he really wanted to keep his name off of as many traceable official records as possible. That's just one hypothesis. I've never lived in Germany so I don't know the details of their system.
The Wikipediapage tells the story of how it all ended. It’s rather interesting and it pokes big holes in some of the more sensationalist claims in the video.
Photo from this video at time 3:11 ,This picture is a fake. He wasnt there with the art work, they want you to think he was. Framed alright Unless he is a vampire because he isnt sitting in the chair in the mirror behind him and the mirror has a shelf stand with a small picture frame in it. And the wall in the room and the exact spot for that wall in the mirror there differant shapes of light in the mirror on the wall has a shape of a figure of a person a womon almost. Go look close. Boom
Looking closely, you can see that the 'mirror' is actually a glass panel, popular in houses at that time, and the view reveals a door of a different design (the 'door' in the room is, in fact, a panel. The actual door is of the glazed type to the right.) The 'reflection' gives a view into the adjacent room with a similar layout, including a similar large picture frame, the back of the chair is a different shape and there is a solid low panel, probably the back of a piece of furniture, clearly inside of this room which does not have an opposite image in the room with the artist. Why would Peckstein NOT have one of his best works hung up in his house, anyway? I think that before jumping to conspiracy theories, one should do some proper detective work. But this is just a small part of what is certainly an interesting, but factually misleading, documentary.

It always comes down to health insurance...... I'd be retired by now if it wasn't for the cost of health insurance...at least in the US. I hear though in countries like Canada, where health insurance is "free"....people have DIED waiting to see their "free" doctor or get into their "free" hospital.....
I'm in babu groups on FB and some UK women get subpar OB care because of their free health care. We may pay a lot, even with employer supplied insurance, but we have much more freedom with our health care than people who cannot afford to lay for private healthcare on top of their free health care
@@thecrow7 As I say..IF you can get in...I"m certain it's great... And as I also say, the US's way of doing it isn't all that great either. In the US, no one can retire until they are MUCH older because we need the money for the damn costly health insurance!
@@rlhaas87 See...what you state is what I've been hearing. The free healthcare isn't all that it is cracked up to be. What GOOD is free healthcare IF it's subpar or low quality?
US is well known for many totally preventable deaths. Canada's health care is good. No one really complains. As for wait time some people get upset for waiting 15 secs at a fast food place. Some people want it for 5 secs. 🙄 Canadians would choose Canada's health care over American health care.

Absolute destruction don't ever say it can't happen again.
It can't happen again.
Happening right here in the USA with the removal of historical statues and the "woke" mob. Anyone else seeing the resemblance then and now?
Not a bit of difference between Gurlitte and the museum that claimed the works 70 years later. No recourse foe the victims.
Excellent Documentary 👍
Guess you believe in the tooth fairy?
So very interesting...I enjoyed the upload. Many thanks
Ultimately, the guilt Cornelius Gurlitt hid because he was in possession of stolen masterpieces made him into a total mental case. Irony.
The painting t 9:30, a lady with a dog, does anyone know the name of the painter? It's absolutely beautiful.
Hans Makart's painting, "The Falconer"
