😎👉 @FortWirthFabian - PENTATONIX is a 3 time Grammy winning ACAPELLA group that officially formed in 2011. They were in a televised Acapella singing competition called The Sing Off. They. Won the 3rd season.
      In singing order:
🌟Scott Hoying (tall blonde) -baritone, bass, falsetto.
🌟Avi Kaplan (Ah-vee) (Jesus looking guy) - bass, baritone, overtone singing
🌟Kirstie (Kirstin) Maldonado - mezzo soprano, alto
🌟Mitch Grassi (guy in hat) - counter tenor
      🌟Kevin Olusula (K.O) - beatboxer, tenor, cello-boxing.
🌟Matt Sallee - bass baritone (Matt replaced Avi in late 2017 as Avi decided to leave the group on good terms. Avi has a solo career
💥.......Another IMPORTANT fact Mitch and Kirstie change their looks A LOT. DON'T get them CONFUSED with being new members!!!
🌟..........Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are litterally childhood friends from Arlington TX who grew up doing theater and choir.
In High school they were known as The Trio.
Upon Graduation Scott moved to So. Calif and attended UCLA and was part of The So. Cal Vocals. He was suggested by a friend to audition for the 3rd season of the singing competition. Scott contacted his friends Kirstie and Mitch to join him. Scott was suggested he get a bass and beatboxer to make their group sound fuller. He was then introduced to Avi who had a great rep as a bass ( Avi is from Calif) and Scott was shown a viral video Kevin beatboxing while playing a cello. Kevin had just graduated Pre-Med at YALE (Kevin was going to be a doctor like his father and younger brother, his sister is a pharmacist and his mother a therapist)
Kevin accepted the offer to audition so the 5 members FINALLY met and rehearsed as a group A DAY BEFORE THE AUDITION.
🙂👉Pentatonic is the 5 note scale. The x was added to make it cooler. PTX for short Pentaholics is the fan base.
      💥They have 18 + Million subscribers
      BILLIONS of TH-cam views
BY FAR THE GREATEST ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD!
      🙏🙏MORE PTX REACTIONS PLEASE!!

Leonard Cohen composed 80 verses of Hallelujah that each interpretation and performance could be personal and intimate. It's finding your personal hallelujah in this life, whether that's involving God or other deep meaning in your life.

I really wish people would research the actual meaning of this song. It's about falling in love and then losing that love. It is not a Christmas song. They did an incredible job on this song as it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It is definitely a Cathartic experience.

      1. It's on a Pentatonix Christmas album, so go ahead and argue with the group over that.
      2. The song can have different meanings for different people. It touches people differently. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, not religious at all. If someone wants to play that Christmas then what's the big deal? Let's get over ourselves here.

Pentatonix is indeed an a capella group that formed in 2011 to compete on season 3 of The Sing Off. They won the show and a record contract but were promptly dropped. They took to TH-cam and 3 Grammys later they are world renowned. In 2017 Avi Kaplan (guy with beard singing bass) left the group. That same year Matt Salle joined as the new bass. One of my absolute favourites is their cover of New Rules x Are You That Somebody. They also have a lot of original music as well. Love Again, Cracked, Can't Sleep Love are all phenomenal.

    • @r0kus
      @r0kus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@cinderellsworth After listening to Leanard Cohen's original, I think these are the original words. What Lindy Lu may have meant is that there is at least one version of the song with with words changed to make it the song of praise many people assume it is. The original words have trappings of faith, but a careful listening belies that. Consider that the story of Samson and Delilah you heard as a kid was not a sexual bondage fantasy. That all said, I love Pentatonix singing this.

If you want to critically analyze this piece specifically with Pentatonix, you need to understand the ORIGINALITY AND COMPLEXITY of the harmonies they are able to produce entirely by themselves (hence, ACAPELLA group) compared to the simplistic original. Not to mention the beautiful yet subtle placement of things like straining power of voice at critical points in the lyrics i.e. when Avi the bass exclaims "hallelujah" in the second verse, arpeggios and counter melodies, the list goes on. The song itself has been covered thousands of times, yet many debate that this rendition is possibly the most original, musically but tastefully grandiose, and heartfelt cover.
If you're going to criticize the lyrics themselves, why aren't you doing a "reaction video" on the original song? Exactly. In that case, you're best to criticize a lyricist hip hop artist with minimal chord notation. Work where your criticism holds value. Don't be criticizing this type of music with such little knowledge of it. You'll end up looking like you're doing this type of video just for views and likes.
Pentatonix is, bar none, a group of musical geniuses that work incredibly well together as a powerful singularity. You just don't get that these days.

Although PTX did put Hallelujah on their Christmas album, it wasn’t actually originally intended as a Christmas song by the writer Leonard Cohen, but you might hear it at Christmas time.

Also, the stomping has nothing to do with a visual effect. The black guy is an insanely gifted beatboxer. He is also a gifted singer and sings in song pieces. He’s supported in the rhythm section by their bass- originally Avi, aka the Jesus looking dude, but now it’s Matt, an extremely tall black guy with great fashion sense. Avi and Matt also beatbox and play heavily into Kevin.
Also, you seem to think they force Kevin to beatbox because he’s black. Wrong. He loves beatboxing but the group takes care to feature his other talents, singing and cello playing. He even “cello-boxes”, aka doing both things at the same time. But he was found and brought into the group expressly for his beatboxing talents.
This group very rarely uses mixing, effects, or instruments. Almost every single song is 100% those 5 voices. They sound the same live.
Sorry if I sound grumpy but I really disliked how you talked about the group and the song. Don’t talk about things you know nothing about. I’ll be avoiding your channel from now on.

A couple of points... This song by Leonard Cohen, isn't really religious at all. Nor is it really a Christmas song. If you listen carefully to the lyrics they do not praise God or really speak to religion at all. In fact, "hallelujah" seems to be a representation of orgasm in the song. So... not religious at all!
Next, Kevin (a.k.a. "the black guy") is not only a beatboxer but he sings, plays concert level cello and sax, composes, speaks several languages fluently (including Chinese Mandarin) and has a pre-med degree from Yale. Oh, and he beatboxes. So, he's basically a superstar.
Last, the core group (called "the trio") of Kirstin (the girl), Mitch (high pitched guy) and Scott (tall blonde) grew up together in Arlington, right there in Texas. They added Kevin and Avi (Jesus looking dude) and won on the reality show The Sing-Off. That launched their career but they solidified it on TH-cam.

PTX usually has a couple of actually non-Christmas songs on their Christmas albums. They will include songs that have just become associated with Christmas due to some reason (like Beach Boys classic God Only Knows on their most recent one because of its use in the movie Love Actually) or are seen as religious, like this song which is actually a song about searching for romantic love (hence the video showing the men walking accross the nearly empty desert, then joining the woman) & love gone wrong where the singer cries out to God with "a broken Hallelujah".

Look up the history of Pentatonix. They’re the most successful, biggest selling acapella group in history. They’ve done 5 albums, which all charted in the top 5 on Billboard’s 200. They’ve sold millions of records; have sold-out tours; and have had two BILLION views on their TH-cam channel. They do have original music. Whether it’s a cover or an original, they spend many many hours rehearsing and perfecting their sound. And they’ve done several Christmas albums; and have won THREE Grammys. When you fall into the PTX universe, you won’t want to come out. PTX fans are called PENTAHOLICS. And by the way, they sound the same in concert. All the preparation pays off. I’ve seen them twice now. I’m a #Pentaholic now and always!

It was released on the "Christmas" album, but I think it anything BUT a Christmas song. Listen more closely to the lyrics until you get the 'subject' of the song, and maybe the very common verse usually included in the original. And, the 'desert' isn't related to Christmas, but more to the 'expected' meaning of this 'Old Testament" poem/song.

Scott, Mitch and Kirstie started performing in elementary school in the greater Arlington, TX area and were in high school choir together. Scott attended USC and Kirstie was in musical theatre at the University of Oklahoma. She was also an all state choir member in TX and was a Hispanic National Merit finalist. Mitch was going to attend OU until the group won The Sing Off. Kevin was headed to medical school until the group won The Sing Off. Avi sang harmonies with his mom as a child and was recruited to choir. He sang in coffee shops around his California home. He was interested in opera and performed with his college a capella choir. They beat USC in the most prestigious competition in the US and went on an international tour.
They combine complicated musical techniques in their covers and original songs.

So yeah, you kinda hurt yourself here. They didn't write the song, obviously, so ragging on them about the lyrics was not cool. They are an a capella group, all the sounds come from them and the reason Kevin was the one on the drums is he's the beatboxer and one of the best ever. The possible memory would be from Sing Off where the five came together for the competition and blew everyone's mind. Shawn Stockton (pretty sure you know who he is but just in case Boyz2Men) loves them. It's probably a good idea on a first time viewer video to be a little more careful to not insult like everyone in the group and the fans. Also, since you seemed concerned about Kevin being the only black man in the group, when Avi left they got Matt on bass and he is also black. But really, you should just watch them do Imagine because it doesn't get more inclusive than Pentatonix. Sorry for all the complaints you're going to get on this.

The percussion is usually a very tight collaboration between Kevin and Avi (Bass). Kevin is an incredible beatboxer and Avi is a Basso profundo. Between them they can produce some amazing rhythm and percussion. Avi (2nd singer, looks like Jesus) left the group back in 2017 and was eventually replaced by Matt Sallee. Matt had big shoes to fill, but has done an amazing job too. The other three have been a trio since high school (or before) and between them do the lion share of singing. However, both Kevin and Avi (and now Matt) are amazing singers in their own right and sometimes do solos. All of the members have their own solo work as well. Kevin is a machine, cranking out one-man performances where he plays multiple instruments, Beatboxes, sings and loops it all together in a single take performance that is extraordinary. Check out his KOver of Down. It is a rollercoaster ride.

These are the generally accepted lyrics to Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, though when he sang it he often added other verses - it's NOT a christmas song but people don't pay attention to the lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing "Hallelujah"
    [Chorus]
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    [Verse 2]
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
    [Chorus]
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    [Verse 3]
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

    [Chorus]
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    [Verse 4]
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah
    [Chorus]
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    [Outro]
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

    [Additional Lyrics]
    Baby, I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
    [Additional Lyrics]
There was a time you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
    [Additional Lyrics]
    Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
People pick and choose verses to make it sound Christmasy or Churchy, but it's really not.

This is NOT a Religous Song nor is it a Christmas song.
-This is a song about Love gone wrong, for an example, some of the lyric's mentioned in the song are:
....."she tied you to the kitchen chair,
she broke your throne & she cut your hair,
and from your lips she drew the Hallelujah".....
-I believe this is a play on the Samson & Delilah scene from the Bible but in this song I'm sure it is referring to a female, who is straddled upon her male counterpart having sex but her intentions are to 'break him down' not 'build him up'.
-Just because religious words & terms are used doesn't mean it is referring to an actual religious experience.
    Anyways thanks for your thoughts.

As others here said, this is NOT a Christmas song. It's been co-opted by people simply because it's entitled Hallelujah, but it's NOT a religious song. The writer, Leonard Cohen, has said that in interviews. PTX wisely jumped on that bandwagon and put in on a Xmas album. It's metaphor. It's....art. Anyone who listens to the lyrics wouldn't mistake it for a religious song, imo. :)

Definitely not for Christmas or even Christian but some church goers get confused. The man who wrote it was Jewish, Leonard Cohen
Quite a beautiful song though and they present it well.
"The song is about a love that has soured and gone stale. Cohen used a lot of religious imagery, including references to some of the more notorious women in the bible (all of whom are popular figures in songs). Here's some lyric analysis:
"You saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you" - Bathsheba, whose husband was murdered by the king so he could have her.
"She tied you to her kitchen chair, she broke your throne and she cut your hair" - Delilah, who cut off Samson's locks that held his superhuman strength.
"But remember when I moved in you and the holy dove was moving too" - This could be a reference to the divine conception and Mary.
The lines referring to the immaculate conception can also be interpreted as having a sexual connotation: "And every breath we drew was hallelujah."
Leonard Cohen explained: "Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means 'Glory to the Lord.' The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist. I say: All the perfect and broken Hallelujahs have an equal value. It's a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in some formal religious way but with enthusiasm, with emotion."

Hi watching your reaction to "Hallelujah". It was written by Leonard Cohen, a Jewish man and not written as a Christian Christmas son. He lived long enough to hear their rendition. I believe he died about 1 month afterwards. I've heard him sing it with his gravelly voice and he wrote more verses that I wish they'd sung. By the way I think it's probably Death Valley.

Yes, they are wonderful every time. This is in the Mohave desert, Leonard Cohen's song about a bad breakup, not a religious song, but powerful. They won SING OFF in 2011. They are fantastic from "Bohemian Rhapsody" cover, to DAFT PUNK mash up- that they won a Grammy for, and many more. PTX just dropped a new song, AMAZING GRACE, with fresh lyrics, visually stunning, and power and passion in their voices. DO TRY IT ! Thank you.

Glad your mind is open to different genres of music...there is beauty in all if we take the time to listen.

It's not a Christmas song although it is on an album of mostly Christmas music by Pentatonix. In fact the character at the beginning of the song is David (son of Nitzevet (Talmud) and Jesse of Bethlehem; shepard, musician, warrior, and finally anointed king of Israel ruled c. 1010 - 970 BCE, thus spake Wikipedia) and thus predates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth by about a millennium. The Song later jumps to a contempory setting for the singer recounting his relationship with an unnamed (presumably) woman. This is a cover (one of many) of a song originally written and performed by Leonard Cohen (1934 - 2016) on his 7th studio album Various Positions (1984). This 5-part a cappella arrangement is Pentatonix's own and is uniquely theirs as far as I know.

Leonard Cohen's song is NOT about God and saying Hallelujah, but rather it is about broken faith. You asked about whether they did anything original, and they do. But they won three Grammy awards covering three different musical genres. They also did a cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from Lion King. If you want to get some REAL Lion King vibes, listen to that.

They do have original music but when they started the became known for their covers. Bohemian Rhapsody is a must watch, in fact the Queen guitarist posted the video on his social media, the only comment was “Enjoy”. On a side note Scott, the tall blond, Kirstie and Mitch who’s wearing the big hat are from your neighboring city of Arlington.
