Jonathan Cain, who wrote Faithfully, said in an interview that the repetitive piano motif of the song came to him due to the constant hum of the tour bus wheels he was riding on while headed to a Journey Escape album show in Saratoga Springs, New York. The melody to 'Faithfully' came to Cain in a dream he was having while asleep on the tour bus. Cain woke up on the tour bus with the opening line 'Highway run into the midnight sun' as the only lyrics he had for the song that night. Cain finished the song the next day.

As a roadie, I just have to say that it’s not just hard on the artists; it’s hard on the crew as well. Your family back home gets in a rhythm with you gone, and you disrupt their rhythm when you get back home. You feel like a stranger amongst the people you love, and they’ve changed and grown since you’ve last seen them…and so have you. It’s like coming home to strangers with familiar faces.
*Edit* - Thank you all for your kindness, but I'm not asking for sympathy or even recognition. I just wanted to point out that the weariness of the road extends beyond the performers.

This one is a tearjerker - for me personally… I sang this for a friend of mine and his new bride at their wedding reception, with an 80’s style journey coverband that they had playing,
bc it was their song. This was spring of 2002. Three years later, he asked me to sing it at his wife’s funeral..she died of brain cancer. I sang it a whole step down, acapella, at her grave site. Both musicians, he’s still one of my best friends to this day. He remarried, but he always brings her up to me when he hears the song somewhere and he gets a hold of me somehow and tells me about how much he loved her. HS sweethearts, they practically knew each other since 2nd grade. Then got married right after they graduated college. I know I want to cry every time I hear this song somewhere.

At a Christmas party in 1983, at the age of 14&15, my husband Shane and I were in attendance at a townhouse apartment with 25 other teens when someone put this record on the turntable and played Faithfully. My husband was the only boy brave enough to pull me into the center of the room wrapping his strong young athletic arms around me and we kissed the first deeply romantic kiss in either of our lives. I can still see all the other kids sitting up the stairs in a row peeking through the spindles with their hands desperately grasping the spindles with both hands on each side of their face with a look of sheer awe at what they were witnessing. Everyone knew that we committed to each other for the rest of our lives and we new together that we would be together eternally and most of all Faithfully! We have continued that commitment for 41 years having 3 adult children and 5 grandkids. We love to watch your videos you explain the music exactly how we felt the music ourselves. You bring us to tears and excitement. I always say to you on the screen,”Wait for it” because I know what’s about to come and of course you get there every time. Also we are chefs and your relating music to food is exactly what we do with our menu!! It’s like a friendship of the mind! You are awesome and you bring such calmness to us especially during these tumultuous times we live in! It’s our first comment, I promise to keep it shorter next time but I just had to share our story with you.

This song was my gf's and my song and we saw them that year in Chicago. She put her head on my shoulder and held me and we made it to the 'love' stage. Since it was high school, it only lasted a year and a half, but the impact of that moment at the show has not been lost.
2 years ago, we ran into each other at an event..instead of the regular hellos or whatever, she looked at me and said "Faithfully, Journey, Chicago, 1983...it is still a memory like it happened yesterday.".
I said "for me, too". And just for those few seconds as we hugged, we were 17 and 16 as it rushed back into our feels.

I SOOOO agree with this! We had no idea what we were living through- it was just the way it was.
Certainly, none of us knew it would end.
But hey- we were THERE. We got to grow up surrounded by the best of the late 60s, the 70s, the 80s, and when we were 20 somethings, we got the 90s. Lol i wasn't allowed to go to concerts as a teen, until my Aunt and a family friend talked Mom into letting me go see Steve Winwood with the rest of the kids. Talk about doing me a solid! Hell of a first concert, lol. Raised the bar sky high from then on.
Thus, i made up for lost time, once I was 18. Any concert that came around i liked, id go. If there wasn't one, I'd hang at the bars that hosted bands. I was utterly addicted to live music- and the 90's were the perfect time for that.
Growing up, the question you asked new acquaintances or friends was " So, what kind of music are you into?'. Great way to get exposed to more stuff it blows my mind that many younger folks today don't have much interest in music. Wait, what??

I declined to go to see some legendary artists because they were around literally every weekend. Neal Schon played very well in most songs off of Steve's vocals. But Neal's utterly planet-sized ego was part of Steve's Perry leaving. My ex-long term GF was the road merchandising manager for Journey while she was engaged to their road manager, and the stories were horrendous on some of Neal's antics. Dude is seriously talented, but when he expected every woman he came into contact with to immediately want to sleep with him, it became a big source of friction and strife.

@lemmyisking9512 Indeed, both Neal and Steve Lukather from Toto have huge ballad guitar chops. Being able to draw emotion from a guitar note is just as impressive as technical speed. This is a mellow example of the excitement she feels when plunging into the experience of soaking up the subtle details that make these singers reach your heart, especially when "geeking out" and describing the anatomical functions all along the vocal tract and how slight changes in throat, tongue, soft pallet, lip, and jaw position or tension can completely change the tone of the singer's voice. 🤓🥰 For even more enthusiastic responses, check out some of her earlier analysis videos of Geoff Castelucci (spelling?), Tim Faust, Home Free, Voice Play, and other a-capella performers and bass singers. Gregg Rolie doesn't get enough credit for welcoming Steve into the band when he had been lead vocalist on the first three albums, which were much more blues-based hard rock recordings. The live PBS performance of "Feeling That Way/Anytime" nicely showcases the complimentary work of Gregg and Steve. Plus, Neal's hair is awesome!

Journey was transformed into a different band when Jonathan Cain brought his songwriting over from the Babys.
He's great at evoking emotions, especially with a hugely talented vocalist. He and Steve Perry fit together just like he did with John Waite.
Listen to Every time I think of you from the Babys and you'll hear the similarities.

    • @ruthlafler5622

Or better than with Waite. For example, Jon wrote "Open Arms" when he was with the Babys and Waite wouldn't sing it (and then with Journey Neal didn't want to perform it because there wasn't a guitar solo). But Perry's singing style and Cain's magic with ballads (he wrote Faithfully over breakfast one day) was the perfect synergy.

I've done a lot of stuff that I dont remember! As I read it I can see the emotions I was going through but couldnt realize it at the time. One minute I was happy and excited writing about my previous day, the next minute I was writing sad stuff about missing my wife and family. I'm retired now and living a good life with my wife of 30 years. She went through a LOT of musician "stuff" with me and stood by me and supported me and lifted me up when I would crash, Thats my "Faithfully"

This song was written by the keyboardist/piano player Jonathan Cain when he was with "The Baby's". But they didn't like the song so he introduced it to Journey on his second album with them.
The first album being Escape. The second album being Frontiers.
You're onto something with the piano melody. When Jonathan was writing the song he was on a tour bus. The sound of the wheels from the bus created the melody which introduces Faithfully, and sustains throughout the song.
Good catch on that being the backbone of the song. ;o)
And for the record and Journey nerds in the bunch the blue sticker shown at the beginning and end of the video is affectionately named "Elmo".
If you were able to attend a Journey Frontiers Concert, the introduction song playing as the band took the stage was "Elmo's Theme".

I have been waiting FOREVER for you to react to this song. The piano melody is the backbone of the song and Perry's voice is almost haunting. Also the spacing and patience is something that doesn't happen much today, as bands feel they need to hurry and fill every second with something. Pauses were big in the 70's and early 80's. Awesome job. Last note - Journey is one of those bands that is almost better live, although I'm glad that you reviewed the studio version of this song.
