      I would agree with that. I mean, there are videos out there with interesting advice beyond this by residents for sure, but as a primer, this is quite good. Heading back in March for my fourth trip there, and it checked most of my Japan travel boxes, for sure.

    Small correction: there are very few trash can because the 1995 Tokyo subway attack and the upcoming Tokyo Olympics . I see every day people eating and drinking everywhere ;)

    • @RandomAccessDreams
      @RandomAccessDreams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Correct, its due to the AUM Shirinkyo sarin gas attacks, they hid the detonators to release the gas in garbage cans. I had to go as far as Kyoto JR station to find a garbage can and it was covered in warnings about police and security monitoring it.

    • @RandomAccessDreams
      @RandomAccessDreams 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @James 1137 They still have rubbish bins in fast food restaurants, cafes and bottle recycling by vending machines, just not public trash cans on the sidewalk.

    The reason you don't find many public garbage cans is because people tend to use them to dump their home garbage. A trick I would suggest (not really a trick, but it works) is to always ask the hotel receptionist for a card (meishi). Hand it to the taxi driver and he'll get you back to the hotel after a long day without a whole lot of unnecessary linguistic confusion.

    The most important Japan game hunting tip is to go to Nakano Broadway and Akihabara at the end of your trip. First, try to find the stuff you want at other stores (Hard Off/Book Off) outside of those tourists traps. If you don't find what you're looking for, they'll always be waiting for you at either of those spots, for the higher prices.

  • @Chronokatan

    Awesome video. Regarding the JR pass - a lot of people forget flights within Japan. Flying from Osaka or Hiroshima back to Tokyo or even going there is often cheaper than the bullet train (like many flights are just ~40$)
    Suica cars are nice but if you are hopping around a lot a Metro card is even better. It's 1500yen (price only available to foreigners) and unlimited rides for 3 days. Single rides in Tokyo are 100-400yen and depending on the train line you are charged again. So 1500yen flatrate can be a LOT cheaper if you go around a lot in Tokyo.

    Microsoft Translate is a little better with Japanese translations. I also recommend that if you are traveling alone and don't speak Japanese, but want to see the sights, look into Sunrise Tours. It's part of JTB (Japan Transportation Board) and they have reasonable prices and many various plans.

    An easy way to see if a JR Pass is worth it is by using Japan-Guide's calculator (just search Japan Rail Pass Calculator,) you can choose all your trips and it'll let you know which pass, if any, will save you money! It's an approximate estimate but it gets pretty close.

    A few other tips for overseas travel, try to go right before rainy season if your budget is tight. You might be rolling the dice on weather, but the costs are way down. Also, if you do bring have a flight that allows two checked bags, pack your stuff in one suitcase, then put that suitcase in a slightly bigger one. It is easy to roll the bigger one around, and you can fill the bigger one with all of your souvenirs when it is time to head home. If you think two suitcases is a bit much, you can get very big dufflebags that fold down to a very small size. Just throw that in your carry on. On the way home, put your clothes and such in the dufflebag and keep the suitcase for games and other breakables.

    I've been to Japan three times now and am going back for a fourth next March. It's definitely one of my top travel destinations worldwide, and I've been to many at this point! This brought a lot back and I find most of the advice very good and matches what I would give. Google Maps + JR Pass FTW! Between the onsen, the food, and the friends you'll make if you're open to trying your hand at the language (also highly recommended, and they'll try to reciprocate in English, most likely), Japan really is a great place to vacation. Is it more expensive than some places like SE Asia? Of course, but you get what you pay for: ultra-clean cities,zero scams (unless you go to a yakuza-owned joint, highly not recommended), and everything just seems to move like clockwork. Japan is a truly advanced society that cares deeply about how smoothly it functions. Marvel at it. Be frustrated that you maybe can't get exactly what you want when you want it. But, when you do get what you want, you'll sometimes find yourself in shock when you consider how badly you suddenly want it again because it has so wildly exceeded your expectations. Did I mention the food? Seriously, I've been all over Europe, including France, and nothing quite compares to this. Come hungry.

    I have a tip for international travel (I've only been to Japan specifically once as part of a unintended lay over when coming back from the Philippines while on a business trip). If you can, much like the 2 free carry on bags, if you think you'll be coming back with more than what you left with, just pack a suitcase into your suitcase. Some sets (if you don't have one) have a large and a small that both can be carried onto flights or may get checked plane side for free as well if the flight is full.

  • @tantohalim
    @tantohalim 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    some additional tips:
    1. regarding Jr pass, yes count how much money you will use for transport vs jr pass price. also, think about the convenience of using jr pass, jr pass allow you to use any jr lines (JR lines usually are the best line for travelling since they usually stop at the best spots / tourist spots) and almost any shinkansen
    I went to japan twice, one with and another one without. the one without was because I travelled one way, landed on osaka, and then moved towards tokyo. I need to plan every single trip, buy non jr lines since it is cheaper, it takes longer to go from and to a destination since non jr lines usually very complicated and not direct. I book my shinkansen seat but I missed my train (booking seat costs more, if you missed it, it becomes open ticket)
    the one with JR pass is.. HEAVENLY, it is like your golden ticket, you don't need to plan anything, you can stop in any station you want, you travel faster, you can go to anywhere (so many last minutes ideas, such as go to kobe at 5pm and go back at 9pm), you can book your shinkansen seat too (for free!). so definitely think about that too if the differences is not too much
    2. for pocket wifi, it will not always gonna last for one day, so you definitely need power bank. and the range of pocket wifi is very small, it is like 7 meters or so
    3. remember, there is regulation for power bank on plane, 27,000 mha. for Indonesia it is 20,000 mha

    I've traveled to Japan 3 times now and I never had to worry about reserving pocket Wifi. Unless you're going during the Olympics or it's absolutely crucial you are connected at all times, I'd just relax and don't bother reserving. Btw for my trip last month, the pocket Wifi charge was $160 for 3 weeks (this was with SoftBank). If you don't like the fee, there are other pocket-wifi vendors at the airport, so don't be afraid to tell them you will continue shopping around.

    Thank you for the tip on finding affordable flights. I just went from being completely hopeless about ever making it to japan (because round-trip flights from here are typically $2000) to totally excited about making it there because I was able to find flights for around $950. So thank you very much, that was the bit of traveling information that I needed to get me there

    A lot of useful tips, thanks! I have one travel related question: are there many public restrooms? The older we get, the more frequently we need them, unfortunately.

      Hi, I just returned from my trip to Japan, and yes there are a lot (at least in Tokyo) which are usually very clean (and free of charge). I had that concern too and my bladder was pleasantly surprised when i found that out 😂

      Most cities are plentiful and have clean restrooms. If you’re in a densely populated area, you’ll be fine.

    You should look into getting your cash converted before you leave. Most US banks can order it for you for whatever the daily exchange rate is! No fees unless you need to convert the unspent yen back to native currency. It usually takes a week to arrive. This is important since Japan is really primarily a cashed based society.
    If you want to ride in comfort look at getting the green car pass. It's a premium car for the Shinkansen. More space, and some have charging docks and other amenities. (you do need to register for what trains and times you want your green car passes for though. So you will need to stop at the train station counter so they can print your passes for each green car you choose to ride. )
    The JR pass also includes access to the Nobi Nobi line or sunrise express! That's a sleeper train. It's basically a free hotel room and it can save you a day of travel! Just make sure you have your travel planned out because these trains sell out a week or so in advance. You want to be able to book your ride the moment you land at the airport when you pick up your rail pass!
    If you do forget to bring a power brick or find yourself in an emergency, most Mcdonalds, Starbucks etc have charging stations.
    If you can't read Japanese, Google maps is essential for getting train times and showing the lines. It displays everything in English. Donki as mentioned in the video is like the Walmart of Japan. It has EVERYTHING! You can buy boxes and shipping tubes from the Japan Post but they don't offer bubble wrap! Donki has you covered for scissors, tape and bubble wrap!
    If you plan on buying a lot. Look into your nearest Japan Post and plan accordingly. We shipped our items before we left each if our locations as we travelled this beautiful country!
    While Tokyo/Osaka is pretty good with English most other places outside of the major Metro areas don't. Google translate has a text to speak feature which can work wonders if you find yourself in a pinch!
    If you need a quick ride, Japan does have Uber but mainly used Japan Taxi. You can download the app from the app store but it does require a Japanese phone number to use. If you get a prepaid Japanese SIM it will work fine. Just have the directions on your phone in case they need them.

    As an American who's been to Japan several times, this video is right on the money. Follow these tips everybody! The only thing I would definitely add is that you can't, as far as I know, add money to your Suica card with anything except cash. So be prepared to use some of the money you exchange on refilling it!

    You aren't lying about Google maps. Helped immensely on my first go around in NYC. Glad to see it functions so well.
    Unfortunately, I don't know if I'd make much time for game hunting. I'll be too busy focusing on trying to track down the exclusive sneaker and fashion shops. Japan gets some of the illest releases! 😄
    Regardless, great video!

    Basic rule for JR pass is if you do return Tokyo to Osaka, it's worth it. While it's a similar price as the actual fare, you can use the pass on all JR trains, including the NEX airport train. Narita is miles out of Tokyo and NEX costs 40 USD. Mind you, the private Keisei line has a faster express at about $28, while the Keisei local slow train that takes 70 minutes is about $12. Yes, there's three different trains to the airport!
    ATMs are at the airport so no need to arrive in Japan with yen. If there's a queue at those, or especially at the train ticket counter, go downstairs to the train level and there's more ATMs and ticket counters. As is the JR office if you want to activate your JR pass immediately.
    If you're after a certain game, show a photo of it to the sales person or even public in the store. They can quickly check on computer or shelves, because most games are stored spine out, which is only Japanese text.
    A good tip about the Wifi hub. I'm going in a week and might consider it. Previously I've never bothered with phone access in Japan. It really is simple to get around.
