Good thing about Anbernic is that if this form factor doesn't work for you, they'll have put out at least 5 with identical internals but different shapes over the next year! Retro Game Corps just did a video on the lower powered XX models and you can see what I mean!
Even better, everytime they do, the price for their other handhelds drop. I paid 78 after tax for my rg35xx a bit over a year ago. I just got a rg40xxV about a month ago, and everything that was wrong with the 35xx, they fixed and upgraded in the 40xxV, and it only cost me 71$ after tax. Going to try and save up and get one that can play ps2, but for now playing up to psp feel pretty solid. Haven't had a gameboy since SP, and phones suck for emulation so this has been a blast for me.

One Killer feature that those Anbernic Android handhelds have: they work with Retro Arch AI Service, which means you can translate Japanese Only games up to at least Dreamcast and PSP, maybe even PS2, which is the main reason I use my 405V alongside the Analogue Pocket.
Right as I finished up a review, I get this video. I'm honestly surprised you had gotten this to test. Also really great it isn't android 14, able to also just play older apps if you'd want

I got one of these as a birthday gift to myself and I love it. Im completely new to these kind of things being a more old school gamer, but now I cant see myself living without of these bad boys. To have a powerhouse of a device that plays all the games I love, plus the features of a phone in a nice looking retro package, its everything I dreamed of as a kid. Only downside is that 3DS games run horribly on it, but I'll give the company a year to roll out a dual screen device in the future, and once that hits, it's an instant buy from me,

It's great to sse your take on these devices! I fell into the rabbit hole of these a few months ago, and have since gone crazy buying quite a few of the lower powered linux "XX" line of Anbernics, and a couple of Android devices. Of those, I really like the RG35XXSP (the GBA flip one), and the RG40XXV. I got an Ayn Odin 2 as well, but while it's a stunningly beautiful and well made device, and handles everything including Swich. for whatever reason I'm just not feeling that one. I may sell it, haven't decided. I recently got the new Retroid Pocket Mini, and while I'm still setting it up, so far I really really like this one. I think though that when you mentioned the Steam Deck - if you're looking to have just ONE device that handles everything, then Steam Deck or a Windows handheld like the Asus ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go is the way to go. However, they're pretty big, so if you want something ELSE that's a lot more pocketable or easy to put in a small bag, then any of these Anbernic devices, or their competitors, is going to be a great choice.

Thanks for the vid my dude looks pretty awesome!! I just picked up a great full roms emulation hard drive run on a mini pc all I need is this and all my problems will be solved
AetherSX2 is a good emulator but does require configuration. You can set multiple profiles. The resolution and anti-aliasing settings will probably have the biggest effect on performance. Jak and Daxter is a good test since the game in pretty unoptimized. A personal favorite of mine is Champions Return to Arms. The flame effects can tank the framerate and usually works as a good baseline to measure against. I think the Aether dev stepped away recently so I'll be curious to see who picks it up.
I've been emulating tons of PS2 and Gamecube games on retroarch for pc. Gotcha force, Kirby Airride, Star Fox Assault, MGS3, Crystal Chronicles, Ultimate Alliance 1&2, so many good games for those systems.
I’ve got one of their handhelds, similar model to the one you have there. Fantastic machine, only one problem, the speaker is super weak. I don’t mean it’s not loud, it’s plenty loud, it just can’t handle a lot of real powerful noises. I was playing a Dreamcast game on it and loud noise came on and blew the speaker immediately. I’ve got replacements but their pain in the ass to install so I’ve just been putting it off.
You know based off of this review, I'm going to pull the plug and finally buy one of these emulation machines. Looks fun and my hands aren't the size of Andre the Giant's, so perhaps it'll work for me.

Thanks for the vid metal Jesus! That device is really nice. I myself bought the RG cube a couple months ago, as you probably know it has the same chip set. It's an amazing little device! 👍
Ohhhh Anbernic! They have released 20 handhelds since this review. lol Good luck with them Jason. They will be pushing a new handheld down your throat every week now.
Uh oh! You've caught the bug! Handheld emulation has gotten so good in the past couple of years and with retro being so expensive these days, I think it's the future.
Yep. I still collect games but far less than ever before. It's a pain to get a reasonable price these days and sometimes I just want to play a game without hunting it down for weeks.
I was skeptical at first but na, Anbernic is legit. My first product of theirs was a Rg28XX and loved it. Then bought a Cube XX, 40XXH, and a 406V. Can't go wrong with them.
Amazing device. I think for me I will stick with my RG35XXSP as the form factor and that it runs up to dreamcast is great for me. Also if the handhelds get too pricey I spend my time worrying about it. Still great review, and definitely can see a lot of love for the device.
For me anything from n64 and below are great to run on these emulation device but anything higher than that I rather played them on a PC handheld reason be you could upscale the resolution and have hd mod texture on it. Just pre-order the Anbernic RG cubexx can't wait till it gets here.
I have the RG405V and I love it. The only game I’ve had any issue with(which is a bit of a bummer)is the Wii version of twilight princess. It runs ok but I can’t play for long periods of time. It makes the fan run hard and it eventually powers off the system no matter the battery power and won’t turn back on until I plug it in. Not sure if it’s just too much for the system to run, or maybe a problem with the emulation. Other than that, pretty much any game I download to it to play or any of the games that are included, run pretty well. I highly recommend it.
I just ordered mine the other day. Of course, the steamdeck is better at all of this emulation. However, it's also priced higher. I got my 406v for $164 brand new, the cheapest steamdecks are still around $300+ used. This handheld and the Cube are the kings of retro emulation... Until Anbernic puts out a new one tomorrow lol
Can u do some testing for dreamcast, original xbox, ps3, and xbox 360. And does your opinion about your favorote ps2 games change after u upload a top 10/15 list video? Also have u found or rediscovered any new/good atari and NES games?
I never got into handheld emulation, especially with Ambernic's handheld systems. But I might give this latest model a try and see where it goes. Also, Johnny Millennium from Happy Console Gamer can't stop talking about Cannon Spike because he wants it in his collection so bad lol.
I haven't tried this device but by just looking at the layout, I would say that the rg cube (which I own) would be much more comfortable to play on for longer periods of time for Big boy hands!
Yeah, the cube's probably the better buy but I opted on the 406V for its cool factor and uniqueness lol. Haven't seen anything like it. I also planned on buying either an Odin Portal or Retro Pocket 5 and thought the Cube would just collect dust after I got one of those.
@EliHank yeah, they got the same internals for the most part and they're both great, it's a subjective choice of course! You're going to love it though I'll tell you because I love the RG cube I'm actually playing it right now, Metroid fusion it's so ridiculously awesome on this little sweet thing. I'm playing at 4x resolution and it looks stunning and plays amazing. Good luck with getting your new device and enjoy friend 🍀
@@DavidBanner-bm3ec Thanks man, my 406V is still in China right now but it's on its way lol. Just ordered it a few days ago during the Halloween sale. That's really sweet news about Metroid Fusion, it was one of the games I wanted to emulate on the 406V 👍🏻 All the best
@6:58, Whoa, whoa, whoa, you said on default settings it runs great, you didn't catch that framerate chug beginning @6:47? I have a strong feeling that framrate chug will happen to me when I attempt to play NFL 2k5 first person mode. I think I will wait in 2025 for a more powerful vertical PS2 emulator handheld. I needed to see the framerate & I am grateful you showed me it. 😁☀️
I've never used any of these handheld systems, I've only run emulators on my computer, which is extremely outdated by any modern standard. My experience with PS2 emulation is that it very much depends on the game. It doesn't run at 100% speed, but Downhill Domination is quite playable for me. Rumble Racing runs perfectly for me with no slowdown at all. On the other hand, Ben Hur: Blood of Braves is pretty much a slideshow. As I recall, none of the SSX games were playable for me, they all ran like crap.

The Odin 2 is pretty damn good too.
That gaming system is awesome I should probably get one of those one of these days
I would like them to put 6 buttons on the front.
I honestly always wondered if these were cheap or even a borderline scam. This one looks awesome
I was skeptical at first but na, Anbernic is legit. My first product of theirs was a Rg28XX and loved it. Then bought a Cube XX, 40XXH, and a 406V. Can't go wrong with them.
Drunken master Paul !!!!!
That man is back!
Amazing device. I think for me I will stick with my RG35XXSP as the form factor and that it runs up to dreamcast is great for me. Also if the handhelds get too pricey I spend my time worrying about it. Still great review, and definitely can see a lot of love for the device.
LOVE THIS VIDEO THANKS MJR
For me anything from n64 and below are great to run on these emulation device but anything higher than that I rather played them on a PC handheld reason be you could upscale the resolution and have hd mod texture on it. Just pre-order the Anbernic RG cubexx can't wait till it gets here.
I’m glad you made this
This video brought to you by Anbernic
Nope. Not paid. I don’t even get a commission on the discount code. Just a regular review.
Cool! I'll wait a few weeks and a slightly larger version should be out by then! 😅
Looks cool! Might grab one of those.
I have the 35xxh and am loving it. Got it for under 50.00 i would say the horizontal versions are the way to go
Great vid MJ, but how do you not mention retroachievements convenience? These things are a dream for those cheevos!
Nightfire is a classic and Eurocom was a great studio.
Seeing SSX3 in the thumbnail has caught my attention..
I would like to see a video listing the best games for the Anbernic handheld.
Looks awesome!
I think that hand held is sweet. It's hard for me to get one though when I can just run Retroarch on my phone and use countless Bluetooth controllers.
I might stick with the Steam Deck as my go to hand held retro option, but this is a fantastic choice for an affordable price.
I hope Retroid also sends you a review unit, their devices are pretty good.
Oh you got one too. Nice device actually
I have the Anbernic RG35xxSP. I love that little clam shell. :)
Im litteraly playing the rg35xxsp right now ! So many game . What a time to be alive
When is there gonna be another cooking episode? DMP is funny and his recipes are great
Metal Jesus you rock!
I have the older version R34. Love them!
I'm hoping RGC to drop a comment here, great video man 😎👌
@6:58, Whoa, whoa, whoa, you said on default settings it runs great, you didn't catch that framerate chug beginning @6:47? I have a strong feeling that framrate chug will happen to me when I attempt to play NFL 2k5 first person mode. I think I will wait in 2025 for a more powerful vertical PS2 emulator handheld. I needed to see the framerate & I am grateful you showed me it. 😁☀️
So it has to be perfect? You are looking for a PC my guy. 😅
Wow I just now started playing Eternal Darkness on Dolphin pc today
Weird timing!
This would be great for RPGs and strategy games.
Looks pretty cool, original Xbox also ??
I've never used any of these handheld systems, I've only run emulators on my computer, which is extremely outdated by any modern standard. My experience with PS2 emulation is that it very much depends on the game. It doesn't run at 100% speed, but Downhill Domination is quite playable for me. Rumble Racing runs perfectly for me with no slowdown at all. On the other hand, Ben Hur: Blood of Braves is pretty much a slideshow. As I recall, none of the SSX games were playable for me, they all ran like crap.
