Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tire Review-Exceeding the Heat Cycles

- I’ve always tracked with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S.
It’s a good tire but the problem is after a couple of laps, the grip falls off and they’re greasy.
I decided to try these Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires that I purchased used. Unbeknownst to me was the number of heat cycles the tire has. I based my decision to purchase on the tread depth. However, Track tires go by number of heat cycles and once you exceed that, they’re done. I found out the hard way, what happens when you exceed the heat cycles as the car became difficult to control at the limit. I no longer felt connected to the car.

Glad the car and you are good! good tips/advice in the video!
Concise, bro. Honestly, that was well controlled watching the video. It's not always what your best is but how you deal with your worst. You ended up in a safe spot, instantly went to hazards, assessed traffic and made reentry. Most people could only hope to handle that so well.
Thank you! I appreciate it. I’m not sure why I even put the hazards on but figured I wasn’t in a good spot in case someone cuts apex.
Nice commentary from a “thinking man”. I’m sure there was quite the adrenaline dump at the time, followed by elation of no bent sheet metal. Then nervous laughter. Well done analytics, momentary chaos turned into a hypothesis to be tested.
Yes. It was adrenaline dump is the perfect word for that scenario!
You can over cook any tyres. How much time did you spend researching and checking tyre pressures? Each tyre and car combo can be a bit different, and even the season and surface can affect things to a degree. Best thing is to always check tyre temps immediately when you come off the track and use your first session as a baseline for the day to get it set right. It can be a real pain (this is why race teams have dedicated tyre technicians) but worth it once you get it right. Hang in there bro!
I run the MPSC2 Track Connect tires on my Porsche. Track Connect app allows me to monitor real time tire pressures and tire temps. The app will tell a driver if the tire is overheating And if pressures are not ideal. Every car is slightly different. But, not that far off. Cups like to run lower than average hot pressures to stick. You should be in the low 30’s psi hot. According to the app, my Porsche ideal temps are 29F/31R. Even a few PSI above these pressures and I start losing grip. At full pace at Thunderhill East, laps 4-5 give me the best grip. After that, the grip slowly falls off.
So perhaps it was my tire pressures and not exceeding heat cycles. I can say my confidence on track went down when having those tires because of the extreme fluctuations with grip.
Glad you and the car are okay!
Do you think if you hadn't overcorrected as much that the gas pedal response would have been enough to carry you out of it safely?
Thanks! I think so! Although the longer I spent trying to recover, the closer I was getting to the wall.
40 psi is way too high! My tires start losing grip around 34, sweet spot is 31/32
Yeah they were hard to dial in.
Felt like hockey pucks
yup, same on my Lotus Evora
You really need a pressure gauge and to check every session. I lower after each of the firs three sessions.
That’s what I was using. Jaco Elite Pro digital pressure gauge and I was bleeding pressure off each session. I had a hard time getting them dialed in
totally agree, for the money the Cup2 costs, these are garbage. Dunlop Sport Maxx Race2 are the much better OEM on 718 GT4. Not to mention there are much cheaper options like F1 Supercar3 and Yokohama AD09.
Probably the tire pressures
It’s hard to say. I would try some new ones and go from there.
