  • In this last and final episode of the Tambura 101 series, we will look at how to maintain and take care of the Tambura, the pros and cons of using the electronic substitute, and find answers to some frequently asked questions about the Tambura.
Tambura 101 is a video series that discusses many facets of the instrument known as the Tambura/Tanpura. Through these episodes, we will learn in-depth, about its history, origin, form, structure, process, assembly, sound, aesthetic, acoustic, tuning, playing, different types, and many other things.
An artiste's relationship with his instrument is extremely personal and emotional. It is a true joy to witness a musician cajole his instrument into tune and then drown in the bliss of its sound. I have always been intrigued by this magnificent instrument and have assimilated from many artistes over the years, by just observing them tune their instruments. Working with the wonderful craftsmen in Miraj a couple of years ago gave me incredible insight into the art of making a Tambura and I’ve been learning about this instrument ever since. During the lockdown, I’ve had the time to pen down all that I’ve learnt over the years, and share this wealth of knowledge with all of you. I thank those who have played an important role in my journey of trying to truly understand the Tambura! Hope you enjoy this offering

Thank you so much for making this series. I feel its also the duty of senior musicians and teachers to tell the learners how absolutely indispensable knowing how to tune and play the tanpura. I have heard more and more professional singers sing an entire concert with a disturbingly out-of-tune tanpura (some of them being dhrupad singer which boggles me as dhrupad singers solely rely on the tanpura for tonic support).

🙏 Thank you for posting such informative series on tanpura. Understanding of the workings, playing of the actual tanpura has been an enigma. Your videos are energizing to get comfortable with the actual tanpura. Now need to experience all that you have so beautifully explained by doing & playing it. 🪷

This series is truly a wonderful resource for every musician, novice and veteran alike. Having personally known the trouble of having to sift through hundreds of websites and books, I cannot thank you enough for consolidating all that information and presenting it so concisely. I look forward to more such series from you :)

This series has been very helpful in inspiring me to play one or more of my tanpuras every day as I did in the past. Thank you for your knowledgeable and fun approach to this remarkable instrument. I first heard a tanpura when I was about 8 years old and even now at 71 years of age it is still the most beautiful sound I ever heard.

I must appreciate and congratulate you for this wonderful series on Thambura. It is not like a violin for a violinist - though it is absolutely important for a singer. However the instrument is taken for granted by many musiicans and rasikas. And it has more or less been replaced by the electronic version in most concerts. Through this series you have brought it's importance is as much as sruti is to music. I hope all the students of classical music go through the same. Thank you

Firstly, well thought off & conceived, the lecture on ‘The Tamboora’.
Secondly, I agree with most of the points mentioned and I beseech everyone to start investing time & energy in a good Tamboora....benefits outweigh the investment. It is not just meditative but adds richness to OUR MUSIC...one will only realise the depth of our music only if one uses (just tunes) a Tamboora or a Veena...please think of it this way, what if no one invented an Shruti box or an electronic tamboora?
    Please note and revert:
    1. We know that the bridge is not fixed to the Tamboora...how do one finds the most optimum position to place it to get the best resonance...I do it with trial and error and I know it is different for each Tamboora...some may even be away from the centre but some guidance in this direction would help.
    2. There is a very good reason for using the middle finger to strum the Panchama & the index for the rest...human physiology. I found out practically sometime back that middle finger is used to pluck the Panchama because it is the longest and can easily stride to pluck the string which is the farthest while playing....this doesn’t add strain when played for a long time. It helps a lot when the bridge is wide too.
    3. When thought of the placement of the strings...I thought why pSSs & not SSsP....this is because the former gives the pS interval and Ss the octave interval which is the most important for OUR MUSIC.
There are many theories of not using the Tamboora because of the Harmonics & overtones produced....I think of it like this....Shree Deekshitar and others conceptualised OUR MUSIC with all these harmonics...why change it.
Thank you for taking time to share your knowledge , I did learn a few things from the 5 videos.

Amazing and unique series! Thank you!
Is it better to store the taanpura inside a case (fiberglass) or in open? While storing, should it be left tuned or untuned?
Is there a way to maintain the shine? I was told to occasionally use a bit of oil while cleaning so that over time the wood doesn't go too dry and crack. Is this right?
How often the bridge needs to be changed?
Who are other Taanpura makers from Miraj and other places that you would recommend? Is there a list and reviews?

Congratulations on a thoroughly researched and well presented series on this beautiful instrument. And I totally agree that the electronic version is in no way a subsititute - acoustic sounds produced by humans (with voice or instrument) produce irregularities, not necessarily perceptible, that do make a difference to the sounds/harmonics.

Fantastic series! Extremely educative. On a lighter note, you have painted a true picture of the tambura like a wand of the musical magicians, casting charms and spells on the listeners.
Can we look forward to a 101 on percussion instruments and thani avarthanam? It's a whole load of mystery to people who love this music and try to understand them.

Thank you for this amazing series!
In fact, I have learned a lot from you!
One question that I have, is about the size of the tanpuras. In miraj, there are big tanpuras for male and female scales. I want to ask if it affects the tonal quality of the instrument or not?

Hi Rithvik. Thanks for the wonderful series on Tambura. One specific question that I have is this - How is the tambura tuned for panchama varjya ragams like Hindolam, Vasanta etc and for ragams where madhyama is kept as adhara shadjam like Yamunakalyani, Nadanamakriya etc ?
