- How do you play the Tambura?
Tambura 101 is a video series that discusses many facets of the instrument known as the Tambura/Tanpura. Through these episodes, we will learn in-depth, about its history, origin, form, structure, process, assembly, sound, aesthetic, acoustic, tuning, playing, different types, and many other things.
An artiste's relationship with his instrument is extremely personal and emotional. It is a true joy to witness a musician cajole his instrument into tune and then drown in the bliss of its sound. I have always been intrigued by this magnificent instrument and have assimilated from many artistes over the years, by just observing them tune their instruments. Working with the wonderful craftsmen in Miraj a couple of years ago gave me incredible insight into the art of making a Tambura and I’ve been learning about this instrument ever since. During the lockdown, I’ve had the time to pen down all that I’ve learnt over the years, and share this wealth of knowledge with all of you. I thank those who have played an important role in my journey of trying to truly understand the Tambura! Hope you enjoy this offering

Such a deeply spiritual instrument.
Had been waiting for this episode for a while now! Informative as ever! Love this series :)
Thank you very much! This episode did take longer than expected. The remaining two parts must be out during the next week.
Well explained
Very clear and informative for those starting out in the world of indian classical music - thankyou Rithvikbhai!!!
great stuff to actually learn what the Tanpura IS and how it works ,i.e. how it produces its distincts sound. I can imagine musicians distorting the harmonics on purpose as well ,fascinating .
Bhimsen ji used to always sing with 4 taanpuras on the last day of sawaii gandharva fest in Pune. It used to be magical...
Awesome👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Do you like tanpura??. Can you play tanpura??.
Very useful..thankyou for making this series rithwik sir
Thanks a lot for explaining it so very well..it is really very helpful
Great video. Please make another one on how to maintain the tanpura. For ex, How to store it for a short term (every day riyaaz), the long term (box or not?), Store it tuned or loosened? How to clean? etc.
Ah! Thank you Anna for this video. Really helped me.
But I find it difficult both playing the Tambura and keeping my talam in place. How do I fix that?🙏
Good 👍🏻. Thank you🙏🏻
Nicely explained! Thank you! It would be great if you can do one more in the Tanpura series showing it in action when singing - showing the cadence and speed of playing.
Very nice Sir
Hi Rithvik. Thank you for this informative series. Can you share the brand of the stands that you've used for your two tamburas in the background?
The tanpura is tuned very nicely.
Very useful
Thank you so much for these tutorial videos. Can I ask who made this tanpura for you? The sound is amazing.
Anna, can we have a video on practice sessions and manodharmam?
in my Ramjee tambura has a wooden bridge, and the pancham's jiva is almost hopeless regardless of string. I need to file the bridge apparently to fix it. Do you know how? btw Amir Khansahab played the tambura over his lap at home.
what is a good tambura brand? i cant seem to find any good info on great tambura brands
Thanks, where can I find tanpura holder?
Brother i have to purchase tanpura so what is price which have good sound male tanpura
Isn’t the male tanpura should be tuned to lower octave or mandra saptak sa. I think it’s tuned middle octave pa n higher octave sa as judi. Correct me if I’m wrong.
