    Respected Sir, I have just started learning Hindustani classical music at the age of 60 years with no background about this music even in my family. My Guru always insists me on being in tune with the Tanpura. Actually, i was very confused as to how i can match my swaras with the swaras of the tanpura as the tanpura, as i thought then, had Sa, Pa or Ma swaras. I had spoken on this with many and also searched on net but no one could provide a satisfactory answer to this. After watching this session i could really understand this aspect of tanpura as you told that a string of a tanpura also gives rise to many overtones. Thanks respected Sir.

    Sir pls tell me . Overtones how it develops . Can we make overtone clearly audible by jaw arai adjustment . U said from shadja pamchama resonates .also kharaj shadja produces shudda gandara. Sir what about pancham ends with Rishab . Also madyam ends in ? Nishaad ends in ? Pls show me light on these concepts . Thank u

      Yes, you are right that it is the javari ajustment which makes the overtones clearly audible. For any note, a normal person can hear upto 7 overtones. A little bit of suggestion is required initially. Madhyam very clearly gives the Dh, and Ni gives Teevra Ma.

    Could you please explain briefly what are overtones? I don't think overtones were mentioned in previous episodes. Thank you!

      Sound is a waveform, as we all know. This has a frequency, which is the primary indicator of the pitch. However, the waveform is not a simple sine wave of this frequency, but a composite of this fundamental, plus its overtones. An overtone is a frequency which is a multiple of the fundamental. So if the fundamental is say f, then its overtones will be 2f, 3f, 4f and so on. The relative proportion ( energy content) of these overtones decides the tone or the timbre of the sound. This is responsible for various instruments sounding different, even if the pitch is the same.

    its quite confusing about first and last sting, some say pa of madhya some say pa of mandhra for first string and for last string some say sa of mandhra some say sa of taar saptak, which is more widely used?

    • @RagaQuest
      @RagaQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no confusion.....It is ALWAYS the Pa or Ma of the Mandra on the first string, and the Mandra Sa on the last string..
