Are tampura strings the same a guitar strings?

Hi Jeff,
Sometimes, wound guitar strings are used on the small instrumental tanpuras to get the short scale length (approx. 67cm) to be tuned to a lower octave, which gives a deeper rounded sound. This is an exception, but it works quite well.
Normally, the best tanpura strings are from Germany. Roslau for steel strings , Jahn for copper strings.

@@tosslevyindianmusicalinstr5507 Thank you for your answer. I bought a box tampura on ebay and it is in a male voice and to me the strings don't resonate that well on the chikari. Maybe it is because they are guitar strings in the male voice. I prefer to have it in the female voice anyways. Any recomendations?

What string diameter should I put on a tampura?

This depends on what kind of tanpura you have. The 3 most common tanpuras are Male, Female and Instrumental. On my website I have links explaining the tuning and guages of strings to each of these three tanpura types. The length of the strings can vary and are approximate. The main length is between the nut and the front of the bridge, This is called the mensure or the vibrating string length. (this is not the total length of the string because the distance of the pegs and tail piece are not included in this mesurement) Please see the first link to learn how to get a correct measurement and to establish which tanpura type you have,

I'm interested in making a tampura box. And I found that guitar strings don't seem to be very suitable for this.

@@jawari5 Please tell me if I understand correctly that the length of the strings is related to the length of the instrument. Those. on a female tampura, you cannot put strings that are suitable in length and thickness for a male tampura.
I'm interested in making a tampura box that matches the length of a women's tampura. Can you use guitar strings for this? Or are only strings special for it, with given diameters, suitable for tampura?
