  • This emergency repair is exactly what I wanted to do on my birthday. The pulley cost about $205 after taxes and the job isn't TOOOO bad.
    This should be the same on almost any subaru impreza, legacy, outback, wrx, etc between about 1990 and at least 2012 as far as I know.

    Driving home today on long straight roads then I noticed my battery and brake light on. Figured it just threw the alternator belt at most, went to turn and no power steering. Sure enough, crankshaft pulley separated. Thanks for your video as I am a diy guy that lives in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t want to pay for labor or a tow bill to shop. Thanks again blessed by this video

    I love how you cut out the video of the pulley coming off. Very useful. Much help. Everyone says the pulley just wiggles off but mine doesn’t want to budge.

      daydrinker187 how’d you get it off. I’m having the same problem. He mentions the key lining up. I’m gonna check that

    Dude, this helped me so much. Thanks for posting. Especially the piece about starting the engine to loosen the pulley bolt.

    Thanks man
    That was great

    The serpentine belt took a crap put it all back together and then we found out the harmonic balancer took one too
    Again thank you

    Thanks for the trick for torquing the pulley, I used the A/C pulley instead of the alternator with a pry bar. Easy with the 8mm socket. It’s easier to remove the pulley bolt with an electric impact. I used a Milwaukee impact wrench, took 5 seconds.

    Yep this is whats going on with my 2000 forseter now. Started hearing a bad bearing sound from somewhere near the crank pulley. Pulled the belts and the timing cover and I can see the pieces of the pulley coming off and a good bit of metal dust.Doing the repair tomorrow and hope it goes as well as this.

      @JI77469 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Albert were you able to see the metal dust/pieces of pulley just from taking off the timing cover? Or did you need to take off the timing belt to get a visual?

    I was replacing my crank pulley on my 05 Outback 3.0 H6 & there are ruler like markings(numbers & ruler line, 20 at the top, two lines then 10, two line then 0) next to the crank pulley, on the front of the timing cover. There's also a notch on the new pulley I received from subaru. I can't find anything on how this is supposed to line up, does the other models not have this? I only have one belt, not two, so my crank pulley is not "double wide" like the one in this video. I'm scared to put the new pulley on without knowing if it should line up with which mark.

    Cool video quick question did you disconnect all of the spark plug wires to remove crank bolt ?

    • @froshmasta
      @froshmasta  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I did. I unplugged them from the coil end (easier to reach) to prevent it from accidentally firing when I bumped the bolt loose with the starter. I believe the wires and terminals were both numbered 1-2-3-4 so it was easy to pop them back on in the correct order afterwards. cheers!

    Just going through the same issue with my daughters 05 legacy 2.5i limited. She started her car to go to school this am and the belts blew off? I bought a new idler pully as the dealer expected. Hmmm well looky that.... wtf the balancer was hooped.
    Car is 30 miles from home. What size socket fits the crank bolt?

    I came to this vídeo because a sound of something loose in the pulley, it starts just when i put on Drive and the revs drops a little.. on parking the sound stops..

    • @froshmasta
      @froshmasta  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can't see anything obvious going on with your pulleys and you're still getting some weird sound in that area it might be a good idea to have a mechanic who knows Subarus look it over. Especially checking the timing belt tensioner which is very near the crank pulley but completely hidden from view behind the plastic covers. Because the last thing you want is for the timing belt tensioner or some other timing belt related component to let go.

      Yep. More common than you would care to think about. I don't think it's just a Subaru thing either. any car using that layered steel-rubber-steel crank pulley could potentially be affected at some point.

    FYI Subaru does not honor their warranty on this rubber crap pulley. Could cost you $8,000 + in damage. The least $800 for a brand new AC. Get rid of this rubber crap and install a performance pulley. Mine has taken out the timing belt cover and the AC on a brand new engine 3000 miles. Haven't had a chance to inspect the timing belts yet.

    So whats the trick with getting it back on to torque spec then? (btw thank you)

    • @froshmasta
      @froshmasta  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Near the end of the video I talk about how I put this back on to torque spec. I put two small deep sockets into the holes in the pulley and used those to torque against a prybar that I braced on the alternator pulley (with old belt in the way to protect the grooves). Then I reefed on it with a torque wrench up to 138lbs or whatever the rating was. look that up to be sure. Cheers!

      I used a chain wrench to hold it in place when I did it.

      @@ForbiddenHaze there is also a crank pulley tool sold on Amazon that fits screws into the receiving holes on the pulley. Allows you to get a pry bar and socket to the main nut while holding the pulley in place. I used this on my recent '08 turbo and it worked great. About $30 and sold by 8MILELAKE
