I wouldn't have been able to do this repair without this video. Thank you A1. After watching this I went to their website and got a harmonic balancer for 1/3rd the price of carquest and napa. One thing I might add is I was able to torque down the harmonic balancer without ruining a belt by putting my car in 5th gear and pulling the e brake.

I can't believe that actually worked by wrapping the alternator belt around the pulley thank you

Excellent tips. Might I add a couple of comments with regard to using the alternator belt to hold the balancer while torquing. First, run the alternator belt tension adjuster bolt as out as far as possible to allow maximum belt overwrap. In addition I had to lightly clamp a wood Jørgensen shop clamp around the belt and alternator pulley to prevent some slippage when fully torquing to 133 ft.lbs. That combination worked superbly. Many thanks!

Mine wouldn't hold it with the belt so i used a pipe and the breaker bar and used the cranking method, just make sure your pipe locks on the ground or concrete floor

Does the little mark outside on the crank pulley matter how it's positioned ?

I was replacing my crank pulley on my 05 Outback 3.0 H6 & there are ruler like markings(numbers & ruler line, 20 at the top, two lines then 10, two line then 0) next to the crank pulley, on the front of the timing cover. There's also a notch on the new pulley I received from subaru. I can't find anything on how this is supposed to line up, does the other models not have this? I only have one belt, not two, so my crank pulley is not "double wide" like the one in this video. I'm scared to put the new pulley on without knowing if it should line up with which mark.

Tried to get the pulley off but the rubber separated, so the outer part of the pulley came off leaving the inner part in place. Belt trick would not work anyway because the torque was too high. So I wrapped a large yellow strap around the pulley a few times and attached the strap to a crowbar that went across the top of the engine and onto a piece of wood on top of the radiator area. I spun the pulley so that the strap would wrap around a few times. When it was real tight I was able to loosen the bolt. I needed to use a 3 foot extension bar to get enough torque. I tried the same procedure, initially, using a smaller black strap, about 1 inch wide but it did not work. Only when I used a 3 inch heavy duty strap was there enough resistance. I think the strap costs about the same as the ruined belt, under $20, plus you get to keep the strap (and avoid putting excess strain on the alternator.)

Would you guys be willing to do a crank pulley removal/installation video for a 2015 Subaru Legacy 2.5i H4? Thanks.

I tried the belt trick and my crank pulley isnt gripping to the belt. Any suggestions? I also can't find the tool for the crank pulley.

I learned yesterday there are 2 small holes one on each side of the bell housing about half way down you can put large screwdriver in to hold the engine from turning while removing subaru harmonic balancer from my 96 subaru with an automatic transmission......

Great video, however, belt trick would not work for me. The bolt was moving independent of the pulley portion of the balancer!--Had it set up just like the vid but I am still able to turn the bolt while the pulley was not moving, but the bolt is still not loosening at all! Got another trick to try???

I know that I came to the discussion a little late, but on my channel I will show how I loosen and tighten the crank bolt without damaging the belt.

if the harmonic balancer is broken or split, it will do exacyly that. Just get the pin wrench.

Everyone's bolt is 1/10th the stuck mine is. I've tried this twice and the stuckness of the bolt overcomes the torque of the breaker bar every time. In fact, I used a special tool to hold the pulley and I pulled as hard as I could while my son held the tool and not a chance. The only thing that ever worked for me was to bump the engine.

You have to let the tool rest on the passenger side frame rail

Didn't work on my Forester. The pulley just slid around despite the belt gripping down on it.

That belt method doesn't work with a crappy old dry rotted one lol, I wish it did though. My crank pulley just slips even when the belts been tightened.

My balancer is stuck on. And the holes are not threaded so I can't use a traditional Harmonic Balancer puller....

How did you get it off? I have my bolt out, but can’t get the pulley off. It has a little jiggle.

+Jay Jalette It is not recommended to not start a vehicle without a belt. If it is not starting with the belt on then there could another issue that is not being addressed.

If you happen to have a gen 1 subaru with a 2.2L with a manual transmission (not sure about the 2.5, 1.8, or automatics), there is a rubber cover between the block and transmission mating surface on the passenger side. Removing this will expose the flywheel. You can use a screwdriver or any metal piece to block the flywheel from rotating as you loosen/tighten the crank bolt.
