I've had this snap on me twice, so from experience I tell you it will start and run but you will need to watch the heat gauge like a hawk and stop when it starts getting near the red, at which point you must turn the engine off or you'll screw it more. You can only start the engine so many times before the battery is out of charge. You literally need to head straight for home or straight to the closest mechanic

I think a lot of people are missing the point of this, i dont think hes saying hey try this its cool... this info can be used if your in the middle of a highway or in the middle of nowhere, a lot of people dont know you can run a car without the belt, yes eventually you'll break down but maybe you have enough time to get the car home or get to a mechanic or at least to a safe place off the road way with this info..

The biggest thing it will overheat in about 1 through 2 minutes depending on how cold it is outside. because the water pumps not turning, coolant is not flowing through the radiator and the motor, the battery will be going down and no power steering. The worst thing that could happen the big repair is blown head gaskets and crackheads at the worst you may need another motor and a battery. Or if you don't have the money go to a car lot and make payments. and start all over with a Mystery Machine. The car lot man says: just a little old lady drove it to and from church.

Was driving my 03 mazda protege up a dirt road today and noticed a leak under the hood when I parked. Drove back down and the power steering went for a shit but luckily happened on a main road, I was able to safely pull over to the shoulder. Popped the hood to find a severely mangled tangled serpentine and timing belt. I removed both belts and drove it home with only the serpentine on. I still have to figure the rest out - the alternator isn’t recharging the battery and there’s a bad bearing in the tensioner pulley. As a new driver this was a real wake up call.

How about you do it, ill honestly watch the vid and leave a nice comment saying how ballsy you are.
As for the prediction, even if you could cut it super quickly without any complications I belive it would be same thing. Except for the belt flopping around/getting stuck in other components. Again- dangerous

(Btw, that was sarcasm too if you didn’t notice). So my whole point was why would someone cut a belt to demonstrate what will happen. It’s a useless test and common sense that the ac, power steering, alternator and water pump will no longer work. So I didn’t see the point in this video and quite frankly thought it was dumb.

My 2006 Rav4 diesel broke the serpentine belt 1 week after I had gotten it with 140.000 miles. I thought the air conditioner broke so I drove off to fix that. 5 miles and half an hour later in scorching July heat I noticed the engine temperature dial had moved beyond Max. I left the engine to cool down for a while and drove off a few hundred yards/meters to the nearest service. Coolant had exploded all over the engine bay through the pressure valve.
A few thousand miles later I did an oil change, and 6.000 miles to the next oil change it hadn't burnt a single ounce of oil or lost coolant. All this on an engine known for leaking and blowing head gaskets.

Al Grayson yeah but again, someone who is conscientious about watching their gauges will be able to see when their car is starting to get hotter than normal. I’ve had quite a few customers blow belts, and almost immediately shut the car off only to get it towed to me with no excess damage. What I see more commonly being in the shop I’m in are cars with 200-300,000+ miles that have all had their water pumps replaced within the last year, but their batteries are 7,8,9+ years old. So something like this causes their car to die faster than it could even overheat, and then they assume it’s something way bigger than it is.
I understand that’s not every shop, and I totally agree with what you’re saying, Especially because I had a Jeep with warped heads due to this very issue not two weeks ago. But just knowing my customer base, and who I’m working with, that’s where my mind goes

  • @yerwrng

You'll over heat first with no water pump , second your battery would die with no alternator, and steering without a powerstering pump is pretty hard and hopefully doesn't break the steering shaft since it's not designed to turn the steering gear without hydraulic assistance... so yep for sure it will start but you better only need to move it into your garage , onto the break down lane, or onto a flat bed .

      @dr.fillyblunt7505 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It really depends on the car/engine. If it's the accessory/serpentine belt you'll lose charging from alternator and AC most likely. If your car's water pump is driven by this belt your engine could overheat, I own a car with the water pump driven directly by the timing chain behind the timing cover. If your power steering is mechanical you'll lose it, probably not though if it's electric. If it's not the accessory/serpentine belt and it's the timing belt it could destroy the engine if it's an interference engine and it broke while you were driving. Non interference engine it will likely throw it way out of timing but if it gets out of timing enough it will simply stop running or won't run correctly until it's fixed. It's usually okay to run with a broken accessory belt in an emergency situation given you can get home reasonably quickly, given the clock is ticking on your battery because nothing is charging and you might not have power steering. If the water pump is involved I wouldn't even risk it at all tbh. I'd also advise not risking it at all if the timing belt broke.

I burned up an idler pulley bearing on a 4 L V6 ford ranger, belt was not turning anything, it was -20 weather, I gambled & rushed to a junkyard, no alternator to charge battery, I figured I had 15-20 min.of battery juice to run the engine, no radio, no heater, lights all off, no power steering, no power brakes,no water pump working, I got a used idler for $10 or so, & now I always carry a spare belt & idler wheel w/ bearing, that thing sits in the front catching all the weather, for a few dollars it's good peace of mind, not a bulky part to carry in vehicle...
I probably overheated my cyl.head &/ or block driving with water pump not working, but I had to bust a move, or park it & walk in -20 weather, or tow truck time.

Yes the engine will run for a while. On this engine 2 issues are present. The water pump in driven by the cut serpentine belt which means no water pump so the car could and most likely will overheat. Also the alternator isn't turning so once the battery dies the engine will stop. Also you won't have power steering which could be an issue for some people. You can still steer but will require more effort.

I had replaced my serpentine belt , tensioner, water pump and cambelt kit.
Next day the serpentine belt broke while i was driving at 30 mph.
I put on a new serpentine belt and now car clunks but doesn't start.
    Any solutions plz

red army probably dead battery as it won't charge without the belt in place to spin the alternator.

He's right, eventually the engine will overheat because the water pump pulley is not turning...but should have time to get off the road and maybe home if it's not too far (keep an eye on temperature gauge)...just be ready for a lot of hard turning on the steering wheel...the power steering pump pulley also is not turning :(

I’ve blown 4 serpentine belts and drove home, then the next day drove to the auto parts store, drove back and fixed it. No ac or power steering made for a fun drive

    Does the ac still work?

No. The AC compressor pulley was also serpentine belt driven.

I believe it's called the crankshaft pulley.

My Grand Father drove home with the Belt Broken and he made it home slowly..... He stopped a few times for the Car to cool down, but he made it home 30+ Miles... It can be done!
