Gurkha looks quite rugged and a smaller version of Hummer. The seating capacity of the Gurkha is more and has a hard top. The Thar on the other hand has a plastic top which can get damaged quite easily over time. The major problem with Gurkha seems to be the inferior dashboard and steering wheel. Thar draws on the "Jeep" appeal and better dashboard. Since 2006 Force motors have traveled a long way in a very short time to match up to the best in business Mahindra... and one of Mahindra's better vehicle... the Thar.
2020 Thar will come with ultra modern engine with 140 bhp. Also comes with 1.5 LTR 190 bhp turbo GDI Mstallion engine which is not only BS6 compliant but also Euro 6.2 compliance which is heavily stringent than BS norms . Thar is unbeatable forever
These two vehicles are awesome I love the Thar CRDe it is simply incredible what fun you can have with these 4x4 tanks Only wish Thar came full metal body top etc like the Gurkha does

i personally feel it's the ghurka has better character than the thar. looks macho. it's the power which it lacks else it is the better machine of the two. comes with a snorkel,. dagger, a jerry can support. I will buy the ghurka any day

Nothing to discourage our manufacturers of off road vehicles. But sorry to say that none of these two vehicles stand any chance in western Sahara desert, muddy Congo roads, rocky Van Xyle's pass and difficult terrain Baboon Pass of Lesotho of South Africa. Their Engine power and transmission cannot withstand ten to twelve hours of driving each day and thousands of kilometers in one expedition. It is also important enough to share information here that Mahindra Sorpio pik up sale is good in South Africa and Australia. Reason of success is it's pricing, it is being sold 5 times cheaper than Toyota land Cruiser Troupy 78.
The passes you mentioned are proper off-roads and require 4x4 with at least 170 horses and 400 Nms of torque, with mandatory diff-locks. By design, they will be costly affair. I dont think Indian market is capable yet for a production break-even. But this is a culture/lifestyle which has just begun in India. Its only a matter of time before it cathces up with the rest of the world.
A standard Thar and Gurkha will perform excellent on Van Zyl's Pass if you take it extra slowly on the bad rocky sections, even with a 4x4 trailer in tow! I've been there and it is not extreme rock crawling like Baboon's Pass or the Rubicon in California, just a challenging (beautiful!) section encountered as part of an overland expedition. Many Mahindras have done Van Zyl's but the Gurkha isn't offered for sale in Africa. For Baboon's Pass they'll need major modifications to ride height and tyres and probably also gearing, but once this is done I believe they can do it with stock engines. For the dunes of the Sahara and Namib they'll fall waaaay short because of the lack of power. We have many happy Thar owners here in SA that push their vehicles quite hard off road on weekends and long-distance holidays. India is certainly beginning to make inroads in off-road circles around the globe and will continue to do so if quality and reliability remains high and if they undercut the competition significantly on price.
If you buy a rugged off-roader, one of the things you want in it is the feel of the raw engine (unrefined) but that's my PoV, making its engine more refined would make it lose its charm -- that rugged appearance and feel makes me a fan of Gurkha!

It's very customizable now, the only thing lacking in Gurkha to compete globally is the uncertainty of load and towing capabilities, which hard-core off roaders, professionals value the most. But, given the price (1/5th of the land rover defender) it's a sweet deal.
All we get is the Roxor in the US. Indian car companies could easily compete in the US if they invested in safety, fuel efficiency, crash testing. India is a world producer of steel. They could easily sell in the Caribbean too. I'm a 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited owner.
One of the major problem is the tyre size. The tyre size is incapable of supporting the weight of Force Gurkha that's why its slightly underperforming. There's a serious need for aftermarket mods for those who are serious off roaders.
Gurkha is heavier and feels more dominant plus better suspension and also faster when it comes to rugged rough roads, superb on off roads Thar remains just an over priced lifestyle soft offroader unless it gets some modifications done.

I have driven Mahindra Thar. The car really makes me feel happy to drive. But i have not driven Force Gurkha. I will drive Gurkha soon. Gurkha looks tougher than Thar.
force motors is so lazy I make a call for test drive but I can't believe capital of Uttar Pradesh Lucknow where you will find maruti to Land Rover, jaguar,bmw,audi,and Mercedes Benz show room but Lucknow force dealer does not deal with Gurkha how stupid.so finally they told me to give a test drive from Agra dealer in 2017 January and still waiting for test drive.. 😂😂😂😂.as far as mahindra thar is concern as per new guidelines govt of India 2019 every car, every model airbag has to be standard so at the end I took Isuzu v cross high model last month and I am very satisfied with the performance...

I think Mahindra Thar is quite compact and stready ,you can easily move around the city with no hasley but in comparison to Force gurkha the machine is huge and is steering is not as efficient as that of Thar ,you have to face alot ankle pain while driving gurkha on city roads.The main point is the power 1)power of thar is just aswm you will love it... 2)On force gurkha i think the power lags and on hilly areas its fuel consumption is more as compared to Thar.. At the end i must suggest you to buy Mahindra Thar if want more muscular look and power with better fuel consumption....

Finally Force couldn't make it. Being a muscle vehicle Force couldn't stand in market due to poor resale, poor service, poor interior and worst marketing by the company.
Good presentation between Thar and Gurkha, but now time to focus on passenger safety also. So auto car missed this point 🤔. Air bag,ABS,EBD,ESP Etc. Vehicle handling is depend on vehicle features points.
I prefer Gurkha over thar, it's not that thar is not good for offroading, but In terms of extreme offroading terrain , Gurkha is better then Thar. Comparison of Maruti Suzuki Gypsy and Force Gurkha should be done. The place they are testing and comparing the vehicles is not to be called offroading place. If you need more info look at the rainforest challenge. That's what we call off roading. Not this dry land
Br honest, most of I is still off road and flooding is an issue due to weather. Bad infrastructure. I wish I had GURKHA, something lite like this IN THE STATES.
Gurkha just has to run extra mile having came so close to became the best . Force should plonk 160 odd bhp engine with better noise insulation better gear ratios, Better ergonomic it still misses out on that front. Otherwise it's a best off road budget SUV for sure.

Yes, there is an option for left hand drives in any vehicle of Force but it is mostly on customer demands or for customers outside India.
Force Gurkha explorer is for legends and Thar is for armatures.
In that budget i will buy a SCORPIO.
