I first heard tar baby when a racist was saying it to one of the African American girls that were going to the segregated school after brown vs board of education
@@aredessa5022 Yes. It was re-released in theaters twice in the 1980s. Before home video and streaming, Disney used to regularly re-release their films in theaters, usually for anniversaries of the film or the source material. 1986 was the last time it was released -- for the 40th anniversary of the film.
its so sad that its deemed racist....if anything, its the absolutely opposite of racist, its a superb movie from the 1940's, by clearly a progressive and non racist writers. (when i say progressive i mean in the right way..not the modern equivalent of self entitled cancel culture 'liberal' woke crybabies) . The movie is mocking the stupidity of segregation. Through the eyes of the young white boy in the film, he has no preconceptions, judgement, hate, fear, for black people. He's a vehicle for what culture should be, fully embracing people of any race. Bear in mind this was made in the 40's, before the civil rights movement. Despite his regressive parents attitude portrayed in the film, the boy is the opposite, he clearly holds uncle Remus in high esteem, with much respect and love....and the tar baby....people who deem this racist are absolutely missing the point....on so many levels. its satire, mocking the ridiculousness of racism...it blows my mind how people miss the point so entirely. This movie would no doubt of had a very positive influence on the young generation in the 40's and 50's who watched this and turn away from a regressive racial attitude towards the black community that the older generation would have at the time, to a far more inclusive one....people who deem this movie wrong now....are simply incorrect. they are looking at it from an inverted lens.
I remembered this story as a kid and it made me uncomfortable. I couldn’t understand why and i asked my dad what a tar baby was and he couldn’t explain it really. It felt weird and off to me, now I understand why it did
A mannequin made of tar by a fox to catch a rabbit made you feel uncomfortable as a kid? I find that extremely difficult to believe and think you're projecting your current view on things into your past and remembering fictitious memories. Kids don't look for "hidden meanings" in cartoons.
It's not racist , but it does depict a sad-but-true era in American history. The focus here, however, is to show how much Uncle Remus loved those children, and how much they loved him. His character "blessed" their childhood with his love and his wonderful stories. He was one adult who had "time" for these kids. He's almost like an 1850's "Fred Rogers."
He's speaking a form of African American Vernacular English (AAVE). It's a form of English that developed from the amalgamation of the African slaves' native languages with the English spoken in the Americas. AAVE exists today throughout various regions and cultures of the United States (especially the American South). It also carries complex political implications, which is why many consider it racist, as used in various inappropriate contexts.
I am 48 and my Mom's family is from Arkansas. In the 70's there were still old timers who's parents were slaves and they talked like this. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that I learned, walked into it myself that when slavery stopped another form emerged and White people....... Hollywood Jews started stealing Black humor, and music. Can you believe there are probably elderly people out there that never opened their eyes and learned that. Oh, and the peers that be didn't want Cosby buying en bee see.
Disney was Irish American, not Jewish. Jews didn't need to steal Black humor and music. Jews have very funny comedians-Jack Benny, The Marx Bros., Charlie Chaplin, right up to the present. Hollywood is a different story. Whatever makes money. I do agree with the first comment posted here; these stories are African in background. Uncle Remus was channeling these tales, which all have something educational in them to a young Joel Chandler Harris (btw:not Jewish) who wrote them down and passed them off as his own work. He grew up on a plantation with slaves. Song of the South supposedly takes place post civil war. I agree with you that another form of slavery ensued after the emancipation proclomation. It goes on still. But please don't blame it on the Jews. Check out PBS great program on Reconstruction. I hope to be able to see this film some day. It came out when I was 7, but we didn't see it as the NAACP asked for a boycott. We boycotted. Many Jews did and many Jews participated in the Civil Rights Movement. 2 of the 3 murdered civil rights workers in Mississippi were Jewish.
I think they should release Song of the south on DVD and if they ever do i am buying 2 copies. This is a great movie with great songs and it is know different than Gone with the wind.
But that argument doesn't work as brer rabbit is a animal animals can't be racist not to mention that brer rabbit is supposed to based on a black man though folklore stories he kinda sounds black at times in the movie especially the laughing place cartoon so are blacks racist to blacks?
Yes. Why in the world would you be ashamed of him? He was sharing with you the folk tales of another culture. What is wrong with that? To imply that there is something wrong with that seems rather racist to me. Heaven forbid a teacher expand a childs horizons by teaching them about other cultures.
The film's overall inaccurate depiction of slavery as a whole, it was glorified and shown in a way that not only avoided the true nature of slavery but reduced it and made it seem like a happy time. The narration and word choice used is depicting Black people as not being able to speak proper english. The racism seen with brer Bear being slow and not intelligent and happens to be the darkest character in the film. Also laughter that is over exaggerated and are in reference to problematic films in the 1940s.
Matthew Paquin is an idiot. Probably a liberal. Don't listen to him. There is nothing racist about these stories. People who think there is are idiots. Uncle Remus is a collection of old southern folk tales created by black folk (African Americans if you are being PC). They were originally passed down orally until one guy compiled them into a book. To say that these stories are racist is to imply that southern black folk were creating racist stories about themselves. That is just the DUMBEST thing I can think of. The whole controversy surrounding these stories just shows how incredibly stupid and misinformed liberals actually are.
Now let me ask you this. Who is the racist? The person who appreciates and wants to share the folk tales of another culture or the one who wants to ban the folk tales of another culture because they are different?
I just would like to say, this is NOT how southern black people talk. There’s rule that you have to follow in African-American dialect. He’s breaking those rules and sounds very inarticulate to me.
It should not be canceled. In my opinion, it should be released to show just how different and horrible times were. This way people learn from history. But it should not be glorified as well.
Heard the entire movie has been archived online I also imagine people have made multiple copies I can't see song of the south being forgotten especially when I have it on vhs.
This really makes me mad they won't show this movie any more because stupid people out there thinks it's racist and other Disney movies that stupid people out there thinks it's racist and their not,

Okay, so I see the usual racists are praising this sequence, and I expected that, seeing as how they really don't count as humans any longer, but here's a problem the movie and the book share. He wanted to punch a baby for not speaking to him. Granted, it's not a real baby, but still. You thought it was a baby, got angry it would not talk to you, so you were fine with the notion of punching it. Now I have to ask. Do you go around punching all the babies who lack verbal skills?
Thats how folk tales go. Would you get offended by the big bad wolf attacking a kid and her grandma or three baby pigs. Also it's not racist this story is literally told the same way African Americans told it, just because it's southern doesn't mean it has to do with race.
This comment goes out to all the people who watched this video and read the comments expecting to read things that talk about how problematic and racist this is and not only didn't find that but found people praising this. You are not alone this is racism and it is problematic af.
It's not racist. These are great stories created by black southern folk (African Americans for the PC police). There is no "problem" with these stories except for you being unable to appreciate stories from a culture other than your own.
The real story. Involves fox. Trying to. Hang and then drown And burn and another way which escapes my mines. And he can’t find rope or a pond etc. And rabbit begs to be throw. Into the thorns. After each one knowing he’ll get the tar or tar baby off of him. Tell the damn story as written. And that original Ending is way better. I don’t understand cutting it out.

That doesn't make sense though? Everyone has an accent but we all still get hit with copyright. Its the story he's reading so using an accent wouldn't make a difference, I'm guessing he's either reading direct excerpts from the story which would trigger copyright unless he interpreted the story in his own words to avoid being hit with it. Again using an accent wouldn't make a difference , take for ex. songs are sung in different languages automatically causing different accents but they are still hit with copyright. By using lyrics even with out a tune it can still get hit because other have already claimed the song to be theirs and the same thing with reading books. What I believe is as long as you read direct quotes from what ever, you will then be targeted no matter what. I haven' read about copyright at all cause I've no need to so I could easily be misinformed. @@nihiltower8320
