Ugh I love this movie. I don't care what people say. These kids are looking up to Uncle Remus, just as I have. The stories of Br'er Rabbit have always been interesting and fun. And this movie, and Splash Mountain teach a very important message: You can't run away from Trouble! Life's gonna face you with many challenges and problems, but the only thing you can do is face up to them and overcome them. Running away from them will only make it worse.

This movie was re-released in 1968 when I was 7 years old at the time. I saw nothing but love from Uncle Remus and I still do today. I love this film. I know that it is problematical from a racial/racist/racialized perspective but as a child it was magical and heart-warming. I did not disdain the dark-skinned people in the film, I loved them and wanted to know people who were like them. As an adult, fortunately I have been given that opportunity.
It’s so odd to think that just by canceling or hiding or removing a movie from circulation that that will make it seem as though that history never existed. This movie to me shows that even if the movie takes place during dark times like slavery, white and black people could still find the same things entertaining. It shows that we are all human regardless of differences in skin color, social class and background.
They should remaster the film into a full length animated feature (making it something like the 59th to 61st animated classic) and update the hand drawn animation to be at the same level of quality that stuff like Enchanted and Princess and the Frog were at. They can also easily modify anything that might be considered offensive, and add more characters and stories to fill the run time.

People keep saying this movie is “sanitized” because it doesn’t show racism and what have you, but they keep forgetting that this film is being seen through the eyes of the children characters. You can tell with the animated scenes. When Uncle Remus tells the stories, the animated scenes represent the children’s imaginations. Even back then, parents didn’t have political discussions with children. They believed children should be seen not heard. It’s a damn shame this film has been censored because of ignorant people running their mouths.

I loved "Song of the South" when it came out in the theaters. I saw it again and again. The stories came from the Joel Chandler Harris books written in southern black dialect. Even so, an innocent child, I had no notion that the animal characters (Brer Rabbit, Fox and Bear) were portrayed with black voices. They were just FUNNY. Later I realized that Johnny Lee, Calhoun in "Amos 'n' Andy" on TV, did the voice of Brer Rabbit. It dawned on me that the animals - clever (Rabbit), slick (Fox) and stupid (Bear) - were meant to be black. I don't see the film as racist. Brer Rabbit is the star; children love him and root for him as he outshines Brer Fox and Brer Bear. Uncle Remus (smart and kind) is the hero who helps the children handle life apart from their dad. He distracts them with his folktales. "Song of the South" is a dazzling composite of animation and live action, charming and funny, which never intended to hurt anyone. Let it stand on its merits, which are many.

It's a completely ridiculous double standard to ban a movie from being sold in the U.S. and having a theme park attraction in several locations clearly based on that same movie. Just release the dang movie. And to say that it's because the movie is so called "racist" is completely foolish. If that's the case, I could list dozens of movies that should be banned as well, but no, they're still out there being sold. I see it as a cautionary tale to us all about the dangers of racism and hatred. Stuff like this happened, to deny it would be ignorant. It should be used to remind us how far we've come in this world, and how despite everything that happened in the past, people are to be loved, respected, and celebrated for who they are.

Brer Rabbit is one of the famous Disney characters ever! I really hope that Song of the South will come out of the Disney vault and be put on Disney+ in the foreseeable future. I even think Brer Rabbit should make an appearance in the future Kingdom Hearts games. I also think the song and term Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah should appear in the series too.

This movie is the best Disney animated ever! I remember watching it on television when I was a young girl back in the 50's. What a total delight it is to see Uncle Remus again! Every child today should watch this movie. Walt was making his movies at a time when there was such a thing as childhood innocence. That doesn't exist today, unfortunately. What a treat to see this movie again. Remember Dumbo; Bambi; Cinderella; The Yearling, etc. We could go on and on and on. We 'baby-boomers' miss those times when children were children and we learned right and wrong from out parents and we also respected other people. All of those lessons of morality exist in Disney's films.
Finally watched this movie so I can educate myself on it, I definitely see the issues this movie has but it's a product of its time and also told through the child's perspective... I love the animations and songs. The animations mixed with live action is pretty impressive considering it was made in the 40s. It's sad that Disney won't show this movie JUST because of how talented James Basket was. I think that's the true loss honestly. At least a few people still know/remember his talent. 😊
Song Of The South is one of the best movies ever, I visited Mr. Baskett’s grave in Indianapolis. Disney should be ashamed of themselves not releasing this and anyone saying this classic is racist are idiots!!!!
The South has always been a place of folklore that was derived from multiple cultures. This region was settled primarily by the following ethnic groups: Irish, Scottish, Germans, Spanish, Brazilians, Creoles (French and African) and Cubans. Pre-Civil War and especially during Reconstruction it was not uncommon to find minorities or immigrants running the households of the well to do in the South. And the well to do included people from the above mentioned ethnic groups, including Blacks. Yes, there were wealthy Black landowners in the 19th Century South. They helped rear children and often shared their stories, ancient folklore and even medicinal remedies with fellow Southerners and their offspring. So modern interpretations of stories such a Brier Rabbit, Don Quixote or Sleeping Beauty would have evolved from the infusion of European fairytales, Irish legends, Caribbean voodo and African Folklore. As far as Song of the South being racist, it was actually a depiction of Southerners as a whole. Which for many decades prior to the film were seen as uneducated, dirty and impoverished. The North had always looked down on Dixie because it was agricultural and not industrialized like the Northern states. And whether Black or White Southerners shared the same dialect as heard in this film clip, which seemed foreign to the Yankee states.
I think these 3 characters deserve another chance from Disney. Whether that be a new animated feature or a TV show on Disney+, I don’t think they should be completely written off just because the first go-around was controversial. I also think they should make a documentary about the film, there’s lots of stuff that could be covered in it, but I doubt the current execs would be interested unfortunately. If I recall, the intention was for this film to be fully animated to begin with, but Walt’s desire to expand into live-action coupled with rough financial times for the studio changed that. I guess my main point is, why not rectify the mistakes that happened with SotS instead of trying to act like it doesn’t exist even though it’s not exactly a secret?
My grandpa grew up with this movie. When I asked him if he found it offensive or not, he said there was nothing offensive in it so I just find it insane that people find this actually good movie offensive. I introduced my children to him and hopefully my grandchildren. I still have the album form the movie. It is what you make of it , and I made LOVE of it.

Disney really need to release this movie, regardless of the incorrectness of some of the cultural depictions. It’s better the acknowledge wrongs so that aren’t repeated than to sweep them under a rug and ignore. Sing of the South could be a great tool in education future generations on racial prejudices and the culture and history behind the stories of the BR’ER patch critters.

Charity Ariel Fascinating. Nobody complains because the donkey - notably not a smart animal, actually a beast of burden - is voiced as black. Eddie Murphy obviously enjoyed that role.
This movie is not racist in any way nor does it glorify or condone slavery in any fashion. The movie was set in post Civil War Reconstruction era and the African-Americans depicted were sharecroppers, not slaves. Besides that, what this movie shows is a friendship that reaches across both racial and age gaps. Also the dialect was absolutely authentic for the time period in which Joel Chandler Harris wrote. It is a historically accurate portrayal. Sadly, there will always be those who play the race card and this is one of the reasons we will never heal the divide as long as the likes of "Reverend" Jesse Jackson (what church does he pastor) and "Reverend" Al Sharpton (same question) keep stirring the pot of racial discord. If we all would just get along as Rodney King so eloquently put it, these men and others of their ilk would be out of a job. In my opinion it is in their interest to keep the races at odds with each other,

Later I realized that Johnny Lee, Calhoun in "Amos 'n' Andy" on TV, did the voice of Brer Rabbit. It dawned on me that the animals - clever (Rabbit), slick (Fox) and stupid (Bear) - were meant to be black. I don't see the film as racist. Brer Rabbit is the star; children love him and root for him as he outshines Brer Fox and Brer Bear. Uncle Remus (smart and kind) is the hero who helps the children handle life apart from their dad. He distracts them with his folktales. "Song of the South" is a dazzling composite of animation and live action, charming and funny, which never intended to hurt anyone. Let it stand on its merits, which are many.

It's a completely ridiculous double standard to ban a movie from being sold in the U.S. and having a theme park attraction in several locations clearly based on that same movie. Just release the dang movie. And to say that it's because the movie is so called "racist" is completely foolish. If that's the case, I could list dozens of movies that should be banned as well, but no, they're still out there being sold. I see it as a cautionary tale to us all about the dangers of racism and hatred. Stuff like this happened, to deny it would be ignorant. It should be used to remind us how far we've come in this world, and how despite everything that happened in the past, people are to be loved, respected, and celebrated for who they are.
Disney's a private entity. Hate to break it to you, but they can do whatever they please with their property. If they feel the negative outweighs the positive, in terms of publicity & monetary gain-loss, well then they won't re-release it.
They can have double, even triple standards if they please. But honestly it has nothing to do with standards, rather business. With huge corporations it's never an issue of ethic's-- it's an issue of capitol.

Brer Rabbit is one of the famous Disney characters ever! I really hope that Song of the South will come out of the Disney vault and be put on Disney+ in the foreseeable future. I even think Brer Rabbit should make an appearance in the future Kingdom Hearts games. I also think the song and term Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah should appear in the series too.

This movie is the best Disney animated ever! I remember watching it on television when I was a young girl back in the 50's. What a total delight it is to see Uncle Remus again! Every child today should watch this movie. Walt was making his movies at a time when there was such a thing as childhood innocence. That doesn't exist today, unfortunately. What a treat to see this movie again. Remember Dumbo; Bambi; Cinderella; The Yearling, etc. We could go on and on and on. We 'baby-boomers' miss those times when children were children and we learned right and wrong from out parents and we also respected other people. All of those lessons of morality exist in Disney's films.

Finally watched this movie so I can educate myself on it, I definitely see the issues this movie has but it's a product of its time and also told through the child's perspective... I love the animations and songs. The animations mixed with live action is pretty impressive considering it was made in the 40s. It's sad that Disney won't show this movie JUST because of how talented James Basket was. I think that's the true loss honestly. At least a few people still know/remember his talent. 😊

The South has always been a place of folklore that was derived from multiple cultures. This region was settled primarily by the following ethnic groups: Irish, Scottish, Germans, Spanish, Brazilians, Creoles (French and African) and Cubans. Pre-Civil War and especially during Reconstruction it was not uncommon to find minorities or immigrants running the households of the well to do in the South. And the well to do included people from the above mentioned ethnic groups, including Blacks. Yes, there were wealthy Black landowners in the 19th Century South. They helped rear children and often shared their stories, ancient folklore and even medicinal remedies with fellow Southerners and their offspring. So modern interpretations of stories such a Brier Rabbit, Don Quixote or Sleeping Beauty would have evolved from the infusion of European fairytales, Irish legends, Caribbean voodo and African Folklore. As far as Song of the South being racist, it was actually a depiction of Southerners as a whole. Which for many decades prior to the film were seen as uneducated, dirty and impoverished. The North had always looked down on Dixie because it was agricultural and not industrialized like the Northern states. And whether Black or White Southerners shared the same dialect as heard in this film clip, which seemed foreign to the Yankee states.
At 1:50 the laughing place is very contagious and let's give a big hearty laugh at 5:00 :-D.

I think these 3 characters deserve another chance from Disney. Whether that be a new animated feature or a TV show on Disney+, I don’t think they should be completely written off just because the first go-around was controversial. I also think they should make a documentary about the film, there’s lots of stuff that could be covered in it, but I doubt the current execs would be interested unfortunately. If I recall, the intention was for this film to be fully animated to begin with, but Walt’s desire to expand into live-action coupled with rough financial times for the studio changed that.
I guess my main point is, why not rectify the mistakes that happened with SotS instead of trying to act like it doesn’t exist even though it’s not exactly a secret?

My grandpa grew up with this movie. When I asked him if he found it offensive or not, he said there was nothing offensive in it so I just find it insane that people find this actually good movie offensive. Not to mention I’m actually a half black person and I do not find this movie racist in anyway.

A Disney classic, release on Blu Ray! Only an idiot was say it was “racist”. The black people in the film have the best characters. Uncle Remus is the most lovely, caring and kind character, enchanting the children with funny Brer Rabbit stories, and keeping them safe.

What y'll are missing is that Uncle Remus was Love. He was the first black person in my life in an all white community, and I have loved him ever since. I introduced my children to him and hopefully my grandchildren. I still have the album form the movie. It is what you make of it , and I made LOVE of it.

Disney really need to release this movie, regardless of the incorrectness of some of the cultural depictions. It’s better the acknowledge wrongs so that aren’t repeated than to sweep them under a rug and ignore.

Charity Ariel Fascinating. Nobody complains because the donkey - notably not a smart animal, actually a beast of burden - is voiced as black. Eddie Murphy obviously enjoyed that role.

This movie is not racist in any way nor does it glorify or condone slavery in any fashion. The movie was set in post Civil War Reconstruction era and the African-Americans depicted were sharecroppers, not slaves. Besides that, what this movie shows is a friendship that reaches across both racial and age gaps. Also the dialect was absolutely authentic for the time period in which Joel Chandler Harris wrote. It is a historically accurate portrayal. Sadly, there will always be those who play the race card and this is one of the reasons we will never heal the divide as long as the likes of "Reverend" Jesse Jackson (what church does he pastor) and "Reverend" Al Sharpton (same question) keep stirring the pot of racial discord. If we all would just get along as Rodney King so eloquently put it, these men and others of their ilk would be out of a job. In my opinion it is in their interest to keep the races at odds with each other,
