Mr. King Kong: "MR MOJO RISING" .... A phrase repeated over & over in the song LA WOMAN by the DOORS, and written by Jim Morrison. Is an anagram of Jim Morrison's name [[try it, all the letters are represented here] [created by Jim Morrison himself]]] and yet this isn't offensive either.
Nevaeh Cassidy I know! Tiger Lily is so beautiful & a Princess. Peter likes her & Wendy is jealous of her! That's hardly a negative light being shed. I think they are confusing stereotypes with racism! Jim Crow is by far the most cringe worthy to me. That was a hideous & unfair law. Obviously anything slavery referenced is racist. Racism is defined as one race thinking they are superior to another... I don't see that in Peter Pan.
Even nowadays the neighboring countries of Thailand such as Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia still didnt come up with the word “Thailand”. I mean if you’re visiting Lao you’ll find 90% of their population still call us “Siam” rather than “Thai”.

Also EVERYONE at times of course are the butt of a joke here & there, lighten up, it build character.
What people find hard to follow in stereotypes are usually correct in the worst of our culture. We hate to admit it. In Ireland here now, when many are in the pub before dinner. Its 11am. After dinner they go back.
As an Asian, I take great offense to "the man" telling me what is racist and what what I should be offended by. Caricature or stereotype maybe, but I would hate for those characters to be changed or erased. I get a kick out of them. And you know what, it really does remind me of some of my relatives. So hey, unless you want to end up in a dull grey, monotone world, where people are afraid to jive talk, or have an accent, or you know, BE different, how about we all cool it with the recreational outrage and enjoy our differences. Even if that means having a bit of fun with it.
It was all about the stereotype jokes when during my childhood and I'm very sure that Asians made fun of American stereotype culture at least few times in their life which I wouldn't might seeing just to make more jokes on both stereotypes.🤣
@@night-x6793 I agree. I always loved white people jokes from Fresh Prince and especially Dave Chappelle. Dave is a hero. I find that most people that complain about The Aristocats have never actually seen it. Nearly every character in the film is a stereotype, from the hillbilly dogs to the Siamese cat. The black cat trumpet player, the hippie beatnick cat, even the main two characters. Duchess is rich and spoiled whereas O'Malley is a homeless alley cat. The whole movie is about culture clashes. But of course, people don't pay attention to things like plot or themes anymore.
Gotta get rid of the good with the bad. This is current year, dontcha know! Scat Cat gets flushed with everything else that could maybe, possibly, potentially get some sensitive soul's panties in a bunch.

What about his cousin Slow poke Rodriguez 🤣 joking but I liked we had someone Mexican to see on TV even if it was a cartoon. He was portrayed as smart and strong
Wait, so a black man voicing King Louie would be racist. A white man voicing King Louie, wouldn't be racist. If this sort of thinking isn't racist, I don't know what is.
It’s because jazz culture was popular among black ppl and they had accents/slang that they tried to copy, it the same as doing an Italian,Asian,or any stereotypical accent.
King Louie is not racist. He was voiced by the legendary Italian-American singer Louis Prima who even played the trumpet and was probably no stranger to "jive" given his career.
Backed. Going even beyond this, Louis Prima was born and raised in New Orleans to a musical family and played out from a young age. His playing, his style, the way he walked and talked, were all a product of his surroundings. (Also, Sicilian-American, thank you very much! :P )
@@artofambrose Yes! I am aware of the difference between Sicilian-American and Italian American for my great grandpa was born in Sicily just west of Cefalu. I just wasn't 100% sure when I wrote that. I even call myself as having Sicilian heritage as opposed to Italian.
Would have been dope if it was Armstrong too though, though I see why they were worried about that. I feel like there would have been a case to be made for racism at that point, but it's still sad that sensitivity, however warranted, somehow mars a potentially tasteful character. I mean, King Louie is pretty dope, and at what point does something go from depiction to stereotype?
I guess Mulan was racist because the Chinese were all drawn with asian eyes? The King Louie scene was obviously trying to pay homage to jazz music and black culture, not making fun of it, hence why they wanted one of the best Jazz players to ever live to play the voice. People are so over dramatic, most of this wasn't even remotely racist.

@@marcofriio32 I'd like to point out that King Louis is not voiced by a black man. He's voiced by a white jazz musician named Louis Prima. Does that make the character more racist or less?
Yeah just yeah just because the voice actors talk with slang doesn't mean it's racest that's way of Disney putting in characters without putting a stereotype on what type of character it is or they would have just made him people and then you could have called them all Races
That’s good. As a white woman trying to teach my young daughter acceptance and equality it was not helpful to see Disney using lyrics like “what makes the red man red” and calling Native American’s “savages” while they hunt them assuming they are too stupid to defend themselves. I love Disney, it’s been a huge part of our lives but they definitely got it wrong sometimes. I don’t deprive my daughter of the classics but I absolutely point out when and why some things miss the mark.
I never saw Uncle Remus as anything but some black guy, just being a normal, happy guy. I still can't, no matter how hard I squint, but we live in a day and age where people with nothing better to do with their lives wake up every morning and ask "What can I be offended by today?"
i guess the white people that deem these things racist failed to realize that even today in the south the old men talk just like the “stereotype”. being from louisiana i struggle to understand how having black people talk in the same way old black men from the south talk TODAY is racist. if they had a white man play the jazzy character like we had in new orleans years ago, it would be labeled as cultural appropriation.
I hope they realize that they're called "Siamese" cats because Siam was a previous name for Thailand and not Japan. For talking about racism these people seem to generalize a lot
You do realize Siam was conquered by the Japanese and basically puppeted by them during the Second World War resulting in a japanese-ification of much of Thai society at that time. Both japanese cultures and customs along with fascism were forced on the Thai people. While I do believe maybe watch mojo got this wrong by not explaining the obvious origins of Siam, I don’t think explaining the Japanese connection was wrong here either. “the Japanese Empire pressured the Thai government to allow the passage of Japanese troops to invade British-held Malaya and Burma. After the invasion, Thailand capitulated. The Thai government under Plaek Phibunsongkhram (known simply as Phibun) considered it profitable to co-operate with the Japanese war efforts, since Thailand saw Japan - who promised to help Thailand regain some of the Indochinese territories (in today's Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) which had been lost to France - as an ally against Western imperialism. Following added pressure from the start of the Allied bombings of Bangkok due to the Japanese occupation, Axis-aligned Thailand declared war on the United Kingdom and the United States and annexed territories in neighbouring countries, expanding to the north, south, and east, gaining a border with China near Kengtung.”
@@UNCL3_1R0H Japan didn’t conquer Thailand. They joined them. And even if they did Conquer then that still doesn’t make Japanese and Siam the same. They have completely different histories. That’s like saying Poland is Germany because it was occupied

The Dumbo ones (the faceless workers and the crows) the faceless workers were to pay respect to all workers regardless of ethnic background who kept society functioning from behind the scenes and the crows were voiced by black Jazz musicians and Walt Disney payed out of pocket for them to be recorded at a recording studio down the street from the movie studio (because it was against the rules of Hollywood at the time for black people to enter a studio producing animated movies) to poke fun at the Jim Crow laws of the time, hence the use of crows and the leader's name being Jim Crow. The Song of the South does point out in the movie that the US Civil War had happened years ago and according to the line used would indicate that the movie is set at the earliest in 1868 with Uncle Remus being the owner of the plot of land he's working according to something he says towards the beginning of the film, the cautionary tales were published in a book titled Tales from the Briar Patch (briars are thorny bushes that have seed pods that tend to stick to clothes until physicly removed by the person).

ZHBG 9224 Exactly. If someone from Japan or Thailand heard that, they'd be outraged. Many people from Asian countries don't appreciate being all lumped into the same category. They get very upset if they're implied to be "all the same." In truth, they are all very, *very* different from one another.
Also, Siamese cats DO have slanted eyes... or at least the two I have do. I joke with my wife that one of mine looks like an Alien because she has big slanted almond shaped eyes like the stereotypical grey aliens.
I think its pretty racist of the Narrator to say the cats in Lady in the tramp are Japanese when they are clearly Siamese. From the country of Siam which later became Thailand. Not all Asians are the same. I'm Native and I loved Tiger Lily and the rest of Peter pan.
I think what she means is, the siamese cats were drawn to look like traditional, war-time/post WWII Japanese caricatures, which you can find all over examples of war propaganda, cartoons and posters from that period. So not only are they applying a villainous racist caricature of a Japanese person (exaggerated features and mocking accent), but they are also applying it to characters that are from a different region of Asia entirely.
Amber Westholder i also agree i am of native american descent and i see nothing wrong with peter pan , if it wasnt for all the shows like these people would know very little of native American culture and where they came from because they killed them all off people are trying to erase history
I'm not sure exactly what that is supposed to mean, nor do I understand how you could be racist against dead people? But if I can guess what you're saying, I would urge you to look at Thailand now. Micky W How is Siam destroyed??? The governmet literally just changed the country’s name to make it easier to switch side from the axis to the allies so they wouldnt have to pay the war indemnity. Exept the name nothing else was changed. Same monarchy, same government, same capital, same currency and even the territory is the same by the time they changed their name. The word “destroyed” seems awfully unfit because even nowadays plenty of Thais still refer themselves as Siam. Ever heard of “Siam paragon” “Siam square” “Iconsiam” ????? The word Siam isnt 100% destroyed. There are hundreds of thousand of Thai company’s name having siam in their names... Even SCG(the largest and oldest government-run cement company in Thailand) is the abbreviation of Siam cement company. The Thais do love to refer themselves as “Chao Siam” which means people of Siam. Just because its no longer the official name of the country doesnt mean its destroyed lol.
It's because they had to do a "top ten" and if we remove everything that is not racist in this video you end up with a "top 2" and that wouldn't be enough to put an ad on it.
Especially when King Louis was voiced by Louis Prima, a white jazz musician from New Orleans who spoke and sang that way in real life. His biggest hit with today's audiences is "Just a Gigolo". Watch Mojo PC is getting tedious.
I'm not sure how much truth there is to this, but I read an article about how the largely Jewish animators intentionally made the crows in Dumbo African-American as a way to get them on screen in some fashion to show solidarity for being a discriminized group as well. If you know the story line of Dumbo, the crows are actually kind of heroes and are the ones that basically save Dumbo with their encouragement, all of which was an intentional message.
mmm ppp, that's not really true. Racism is about actual hate of people of a particular decent. Stereotypes, like those highlighted in this video, are about satire; they're caricatures, something meant to be humorous, and like any joke, they can sometimes be unfunny and ill timed, but that alone does not make racism a factor.
"There is a difference between stereotypes and racism" Explain this without eventually leading into "it's funny because it's kind of true! You can't be racist if you are just stating facts!" People are ridiculously misinformed on topics like race.
thenachoandthecheeze A black man voicing an ape would automatically make the movie racist? No. Even the narrator of this video admits this could possibly be a stretch by saying "is king Louie racist? or is it all in the eye of the beholder? You decide". Song of the South was one of my favorite disney movies as a kid. As an Italian 8 years old I didn't know the details of racial issues in the US, but my father explained to me a bit of context (what he knew), he told me about slavery, he told me that the black man was not treated well. I loved the character of Uncle Remus (Uncle Tom in Italian for some reason), for his wisdom, his kindness, his generosity; I felt like he could have been my Granddad. For me he was really a Christlike figure, while the white adult characters in the movie are certainly marginal, I actually cannot recall any off the top of my head. Keep in mind that Italy at the time didn't really have much immigration, and most of the immigrants were white anyway, and integrated into Italian society quite smoothly (Romanians and Albanians). All in all I think this movie made me grow up with a strong appreciation of African-American culture of that period, an interest in Black people's struggle that is kind of unusual for an Italian kid born in the 90s. I also started to binge on Negro Spirituals which I listen to even to this day. Regarding Italians, even today in American media I see us depicted as amourous, friendly, loud or wathever. Do I find it kind of lazy in 2022? Yes, but that also depends on the manner. Do I find it offensive? Not at all.
“Post WW2 tensions are behind these obvious Japanese stereotypes” You do realize Siam is a different country than Japan. It’s called Thailand now. As for the Gong, that’s just hilarious.
So you really think 20th century disney could differentiate between a caricature of a thai, chinese, and japanese person? Part of the racism in their depiction is mixing up a whole bunch of generically Asian features into a single stereotype
@@steuzirocks Considering that they helped China and the pacific and fought against Japan during world two, yea I think they can. Disney even made Propaganda specifically against Japan due to the United States wishes to gain support from it's citizens against Japan. If anything Asians back then were more separated than they are now, same as whites were.
The ironic part is Watch Mojo thinks characters should be portrayed as white as possible. Especially when it comes to how people are "supposed" to talk. Seems pretty racist to me.
+Dave Shaffer Far too many people use the words "insanely" and "countless" without having any idea what they mean. ("That racist cop has beaten up countless unarmed black teenagers!!")
Precisely. It's not racist if that's how most people at the time talked, and they did talk that way. It's like how people talk where I live on the southside of chicago in exaggerated slang and what not., it's not fricken racist if they speak in a certain manner and you point it out.
... you can't have a Disney world & be this stupid... I mean, you could. But you'd still look pretty stupid. Also, I want to meet as many Asian characters as I can during my trip to Disney on my birthday. I mean, for my kid of course. No really, it'd be good for her. She sees white ppl all the time. Not so much Asian. My poor kid almost looks like she's infatuated w/ her own race... She's still a kid tho. Plz help her, earthlings 🤗🤞🖖
Honestly, I didn't know any of these things were "stereotypes" until someone started telling me to be offended. To this day, I could not give less of a shit anymore than I care when people show caricatured hillbilly hick types. It just goes to show that the reason racism won't end is because it will never be allowed to because there will always be people dig things up and demand people be offended. I say we laugh at the absurdity of it, and the stuff in the movies.
Stereotypes aren't even racist. People don't complain about Apu in the Simpsons, because "that's how Asian people are". But those same people will complain about black representation in the 40's talking in jive speak because " that's not how black people are". Racism is discriminating against another race or calling it lesser than another. The stereotypes in there films are literally the opposite, in that they positively show different races.
@@bigmanmccheez5342 they're literally trying to drive all people of colour out of culture. I find it hilarious that in the name of fighting racism they literally do stupid stuff like that
True but the real problem was how disney referenced their orgins. The Scottish terrier looked like a cartoon version of itself. The cats features where exaggerated beyond good taste
It was post-World War II after anti-Japanese sentiments and after we locked up over 110,000 Japanese people in internment camps. People used the term nips, japs, etc. And they were always portrayed as villains or evil in cartoons to create distaste for the Japanese in children. lmfao, it's actually the most egregious example of racism.
Jesus Christ these are stereotypes. That’s different than racism. Claiming everything is racist is half the problem. You can’t just cry racism everytime you see something you don’t like.
@Russell Jordan it was pretty noticeable and you should get pissed off because you cant forget something that was so crucial. legit most of american history is being racist
"Cringeworthy," "cringey" and all its variants have become idiot identifiers, kind of like the word "creepy." If you hear someone using it, there's at least a 95% chance the person is a moron.
The #1 racist cartoon clip is 'Dumbo(1941) "Song of the Roustabouts". It's black people working like slaves 2 build a circus 4 dumbo and they sing, "We work all day, we work all night, we never learned to read or write, we're happy-hearted Roustabouts". THere's more lyrics including 'Grab that rope you hairy ape'....THATS Y IT SHOULD BE #1(And it wasnt even mentioned)
If the character of Siamese cats was actually racist, should the people of Siam/Thailand be the ones who feel offended the most? That's what I thought. However, when I showed the Siamese cats video in a rooms with hundreds of Siamese/Thai teenagers and young adults, everyone.....everyone smiled and laughed. Then I asked them didn't they feel offended by this racism? They all turned quiet and confused.
Bro G being racist back then was the norm so they wouldn't call it racist back then.he isn't being racist he is just pointing out the fact they were ok with racism back then and not now
Intreductor I feel like I should remind you of the Aladdin entry. Even back then, that Arab League of Ihonestlyforgettheirleaguename had issues with two lines from "Arabian Nights."
Different times quite frankly. What was acceptable back then is not today. I think today however everyone is too sensitive and looking for things to get offended about.
Quimby So I should get offended by Irish stereotypes? Or German? Those are the most predominant lineages I have, but I don't have any issue with it (unless I'm called a Nazi for having German blood). Everyone has been stereotyped, with the possible exception of "WASPs," or "White Anglo-Saxon Protestants."
You do understand that when these movies were made, societal sensibilities were quite different than they are today. The content of the movies merely reflects accepted attitudes of the day; not to mention that social media and cancel culture weren't even in existence.
i understand what you’re saying but back when these movies were made there was racial propaganda and stereotypes left and right. you’re right it’s a different time, a different time where racism is looked down on
There's always been cancel culture. Shit, back then Republicans owned that shtick. Remember how conservatives wanted Married With Children off TV because it was too controversial? They wanted to cancel Elvis too, or at least some of him. Times change, now the "woke mob" is like a snowball down a hill and the left owns it now. It's nuts and in some cases unnecessary. Other times necessary I'm sure but whatever. Things are different that's my point.
Yeah, they're so sensitive they can't seem to take earnest critical analysis based on a point that was brought up by the creators themselves as a major choice during production without claiming that there's nothing wrong.
As a brown person i grew up watching these cartoons and never once felt it was offensive or racist. What i do find offensive is how a group of people think they have the right to tell me what im offended by what ever happened to people having the freedom and right to decide what offends us.. liberal so called social justice warriors need to just shut up and stay out of my feelings of what i do and dont like cartoons are forms of comedy. Not weapons of hatred.
I got the overall "black man" stereotype of the crows even as a kid. but you know something... I personally think it was no less creative and clever than an artistic caricature. The last thing going through my mind was racial discriminations.
Exactly, the only racist bit I see is that his name is Joe Crow, which was the name for the laws that excluded black people from certain things. But the crows are a positive representation, they're happy, well dressed, singing crows, amazed at the fact that an elephant is flying. It would have been racist if they said that the crows were poor or stupid, and were the only poor or stupid animals, which they didn't.
How can you start out saying "oh yeah I totally knew the crows were supposed to be black even when I was a kid" then suddenly end up at "racial disparity was the last thing on my mind" Which one is it?
Are you not aware of who Louis Prima is? Actually watch him perform and then ask why King Louis was singing how he was. How young is your staff? Jesus Christ
I hope I would find a mention of Louis Prima in the first comments, I'm glad I did... exactly, they could just have mentioned that he was voiced by an Italian-American singer.
For God's sake, I'm in my early teens, and I know who Louis Prima is. These guys aren't young, they just do little to no research. Plus, King Louie was awesome.
Originally to be voiced by Louis Armstrong, which is quite true. It's not inconceivable to think that the character was created with specifically Louie Armstrong in mind seeing as the barbershop vultures were based on The Beatles.
ORIGINALLY, ORIGINALLY, ORIGINALLY, ORIGINALLY, Written for Armstrong, the video is very clear about that. That means they created the character, with Armstrong in mind, Louis Prima, filled the role once they realized, there could be backlash if they used Armstrong's voice. It wasn't morality that made them rethink their initial decision. It was the potential of bad P.R. it's beyond me how so many people, ignorantly give thumbs to such flawed logic. Kidding, it's not a shock. Bigots are limited by design.
Shadysif the songwriter had him in mind because of the style of the song. So to my original point, Louis Prima sings in that exact style in all his music. So they chose to go with an Italian who sang in that style to take the part because the musical arrangement was the way he already sung. All the other things on this list are massively racist, and completely indefensible. Did you see me defending anything else? So go fuck yourself for calling me a bigot, you have no clue who I am or any of my friends and family are.
I'm Scottish and I'm actually happy when I see characters with ginger hair and kilts like Willie in the Simpsons, it's a bit of fun. I get the sensitivity around slavery, the holocaust etc but wouldn't it be good if we could poke fun at each others cultures without pretending its massively insulting ?
King Louie loves jazz, speaking jazz slang is logical. Why does he love jazz? I think that’s just a coincidence: they just wanted him to seem very charismatic It’s also worth mentioning that they are “good guys” in the movie
That’s very true. I’m from the south and now no one is racist. Seriously. However, my grandpa who is 93 and grew up in southern MS isn’t what I’d call racist, but he was raised with a stereotype. Not all of the south was 100% racist even during the civil rights era (not trying to overlook the many who were truly racist). Many southerners like my grandpa just knew more of a stereotype they didn’t know better from.
Stereotypes most often have some truth to them too. It only makes it a stereotype when thinking that its 100% true all the time. Plus stereotypes can be neutral or even positive. Heres a positive stereotype example: All canadians are super nice.

The Song of the South does point out in the movie that the US Civil War had happened years ago and according to the line used would indicate that the movie is set at the earliest in 1868 with Uncle Remus being the owner of the plot of land he's working according to something he says towards the beginning of the film, the cautionary tales were published in a book titled Tales from the Briar Patch (briars are thorny bushes that have seed pods that tend to stick to clothes until physicly removed by the person).
but in the song it says "grab that rope you hairy ape" what do you think they mean by that?

I think what she means is, the siamese cats were drawn to look like traditional, war-time/post WWII Japanese caricatures, which you can find all over examples of war propaganda, cartoons and posters from that period.
Not at all.

Only one I would say is offensive would be No1 (0:37). The rest have no clear intention of racism. However I am not American.
lucky nords
+Dave Shaffer Far too many people use the words "insanely" and "countless" without having any idea what they mean. ("That racist cop has beaten up countless unarmed black teenagers!!")
Precisely. It's not racist if that's how most people at the time talked, and they did talk that way. It's like how people talk where I live on the southside of chicago in exaggerated slang and what not., it's not fricken racist if they speak in a certain manner and you point it out.
Mark-It-8-Dude my thoughts exactly
All that I can say after watching this video and reading some of the comments - this world is so f*cked up.
Yep, super fucked. Maybe it's just the klansman who decide to open their mouths on a platform like this.
... you can't have a Disney world & be this stupid...

It's maybe a LITTLE racist to not know that Siam is THAILAND and NOT Japan!!!!!
Or perhaps it's just a little ignorant.
Or Perhaps it's a lack of knowled... NO, IT IS NOTHING BUT RACISM
Thailand was an ally of Japan during WWII (somewhat reluctant)
True tho
If the character of Siamese cats was actually racist, should the people of Siam/Thailand be the ones who feel offended the most? That's what I thought.
However, when I showed the Siamese cats video in a rooms with hundreds of Siamese/Thai teenagers and young adults, everyone.....everyone smiled and laughed. Then I asked them didn't they feel offended by this racism? They all turned quiet and confused.
Title should be changed to "Disney moments that would be considered racist today"

Quimby white chicks is a hilarious movie. So are Dave Chappell's skits about white people. What of it?
+HeatForce I thought white chicks was Corny and unfair to white women & I thought Dave clowned too much he made fun of Blacks more then Whites
Quimby it happens to me all the time with Italian stereotypes and I think it's funny.People have been pussified in this day and age and it's pathetic.
You forgot how all villains in todays cartoons are white men. But wait, you don't mind racism as long as it's against white people.

@@lithosagymfan I couldn't give a crap if you're offended or not. That's YOUR absurdly ridiculous problem.
I agree with both of you. They are calling Disney racist when all they did was add black culture into the film. But it wasn't in a racist way.
How can you start out saying "oh yeah I totally knew the crows were supposed to be black even when I was a kid" then suddenly end up at "racial disparity was the last thing on my mind"

For some reason those Siamese cats scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid.

King Louie loves jazz, speaking jazz slang is logical. Why does he love jazz? I think that’s just a coincidence: they just wanted him to seem very charismatic

Racism and stereotypes are two different things. Racism is based on hatred. A stereotype is based on ignorance. They are not the same thing.
