    Jonah's parents are both church choir directors: he's been singing since he was a toddler and that church influence is all the way through. You want to hear vocal insanity: listen to Breakdown. Drums? Work Shit Out. Bass? Follow the Light. They are WONDERFUL.

    • @lottawiklund8606

      His parents work in Svenska kyrkan (the Swedish church) though, and the choirs there are mostly of the classical variety (chamber choirs), so it's not at all the same kind of music. His whole family are classical musicians.
      Brilliant suggestions for them to check out! I wholeheartedly agree! 👍

    Aron (drums) isn't really singing on this recording though; it's just for show in the video. The backing vocals are all Jonah (vocals/keyboard). Henrik (bass) said the following about writing and recording this song, in an interview in Bass Magazine:
    Q: “Next to You” has a cool, halftime-shuffle feel and a gospel choir component.
    A: "That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping."

    • @lottawiklund8606
      @lottawiklund8606 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      And yes, they were only fooling around switching instruments (it was the singer on bass for a sec there, not the drummer), even though they can play several instrument at least halfway decently. The vocalist is actually quite a good drummer, and played the drums himself on most of the songs on his solo album, and the bass player started out playing the piano at age four and switched to bass at 12-13.
      They've known each other for 20+ years at this point, and all three went to music school already in high school. Jonah played classical piano back then, and switched to jazz his last year of high school, and went on to study music production in music college, with jazz piano as a side subject. When they started the group in 2008 he had never sung lead - just choir, and mostly of the classical variety - and didn't even know if he could. Henrik and Aron both studied jazz through high school and college.
      Jonah often cites both Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder as his biggest singing influences, but if you ask me, the song itself screams of Toto (which isn't all that strange, considering a lot of it is written by the drummer, who is a big Toto fan).

    I LOVE THAT YOU STARTED HERE! Sorry...got excited. Yeah, this is a rabbit hole you'd want to go down. But you might get stuck. They have quite a few epic songs. This one is my personal favorite. It's very churchy. But then again, a lot of their songs are. They have chords you'd hear in a lot of gospel songs. But I think that's why I like this song so much. Like the brotha in the ADIDAS top eluded to (sorry, I don't know your name yet), you could easily change up the lyrics and play this in church and it would be poppin' in there. Another song where you'd hear gospel chords real well is "Hit Me". But wherever you go after this, you'll likely enjoy it.

    Hey guy's, I wonder if you would be interested in checking out a live performance of Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa these two will, 🤯blow you away. Beth will tear at your heart with her voice and Joe will melt you with his masterful playing yes, he is another guitar G.O.A.T....Oh, and this is blues🎶 "Beth & Joe - I'd Rather Go Blind - Live in Amsterdam" (you're probably well aware) That this is a cover, and that Etta James did the original song, I believe in 1967. Etta James is another blues icon that should be reacted to also "Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind (Live at Montreux)" I don't compare these to because I love both of their interpretations of this song. They're both very powerful singers, absolutely wonderful to watch...magical stuff fellas🔥✨✨🎶🤗

    Nice beat to the song. I'm not a fan of church and secular mixed music, it turns me off, the two should be separable. The singer probably has a church background. Phenomenal band playing though.

      Jonah (the singer) has a classical background. His parents are church choir directors, but they work in the Swedish church (Svenska kyrkan), where the music is almost exclusively of the classical variety. Jonah played classical piano and sang in chamber choirs (mostly) growing up.
