Dirty Loops on this song took us on a musical journey within a musical journey, within a musical journey. At the end it felt like I had just gotten off the most bad-azz musical amusement park ride ever. WOW!
This song Pushed DMB's #41 to the second spot on my list of my favorite songs of all time. And let me just say #41 was on the 1st spot for over 15 years. Great reaction.
Brilliant reaction, as usual. You've quickly turned into one of my absolute favourite reactors, and I thoroughly enjoy how you manage to point out little details here an there that I've completely missed, despite listening to the songs so many times. And your joy and enthusiasm is so wonderfully contagious. Thanks! One of the reasons the chorus bassline is so percussive is probably because it is written by a drummer. Henrik said this, about writing Next To You, in an interview in Bass Magazine: "That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping." They produce everything themselves, together with Simon Petrén, who has been working with them since they started out. Jonah studied music production in college, iirc, and he and Simon Petrén are the ones mostly responsible for the great sound. They really do like doing everything themselves, and have full control over the production. I read somewhere that the only one of them that actually records his stuff in a proper professional studio is Aron (and I guess maybe the added session musicians, but I don't actually know anything about that), while both Jonah and Henrik records their parts at home. Simon Petrén lives and works in South Korea these days, and Jonah has said that he and Simon has identical setups of the software they're using, so they can send project files back and forth without problems. And they are self-professed perfectionists, all of them, so no wonder it comes out sounding so fantastic.
Funny that you mentioned that, because I just realized that I've never missed the guitar in their music, and I still don't. They are so friggin' talented that they fill their music up so much with their respective instruments that others are obsolete. When, for example, Cory Wong is with them (I love him btw) - it adds to it - but they are sufficent on their own. Good note.
Your face, man. As the song wound up and your breathing quickened and your widened, THAT's the kind of reaction we love to see. Thanks for being open. It's what makes reaction videos worthwhile.
Hahaha, "mother freaking afterthought" 🤣. This was marvelous to watch. I had the same reaction when I first heard it - and I still listen to it every day (we're talking a couple of years). Dirty Loops truly are the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for this. Have a great weekend 🤗
That deep breath you took at the start...you knew you had to brace yourself for what was about to go down. And did it not go all the way down?! This is the song that solidified Henrik as my favorite. And it confirmed for me that, that man could literally play any style of music and make it slap. He's just magic. This is also my favorite vocal performance from Jonah. Every time I listen to it, I shout "YOU BETTA SING, SIR!!!" Love how Aron stood at the end to give those hits that extra stank. This has been my favorite DL song since the day I first heard it. Now you see why we wanted you to see it.
Haha I wondered how long it would be before someone commented on that breath 😂 I'm so with you on everything you said here Jamila. I think the one that actually solidified Henrik as my favourite was Song for lovers from Coffee Break Is Over. But this just cemented it even more. He's an absolute MONSTER
Nice to see someone who enjoys dirty loops as much as I do. Absolutely breathtaking. I would love to see them live. Is keep up the good work love of the reactions.
The layering is an understatement. The "choir" is actually all Jonah. He sang each part and then layered it all together to create the choir sound. Amazing technical as well as musical talent.
I was waiting for you to do this one!!! Hands down my favorite DL song and definitely top five favorite songs of all time 🎉 thanks for letting us re-live our first listen
Absolutely stellar reaction to the song that I think has blown many a Loop's fans mind. Your delightfully, astonished, jaw-dropped reaction was just a joy to watch and I believe perfectly conveyed what most of us feel no matter how many times we've heard this song. Great reaction, great song and a true delight to watch. Just listened to the news (total downer) and your reaction was a wonderful, positive pick me up to head off into the rest of my day. Thanks so much.
@@TheCharlieSmithChannel, I’ve listened to it hundreds of times since the Phoenix album was released nearly 2 years ago and I’ve yet to grow tired of it. It’s a true masterpiece!

Such a great reaction by you. I’m never disappointed by Dirty Loops. Just had me a mini lounge room disco. What a way to start my Saturday morning! Epic tune! 😊
To me, the most impressive aspect of Dirty Loops, is there arranging ability. Sure, they can support all of that with their musical expertise on their respective instruments. But I can list a shitload of virtuoso players that can play damn near anything. But their arrangements man, holy shit man, they are next level. I love Dirty Loops, I truly do.
It seemed like you really enjoyed that 😂😂 You’re like a kid in a candy store when watching DL lol Nice reaction, love your work, sick shirt and top class ❤🔥💪🏻🙏
At the start I have to admit I was a bit meh... By the end I was asking myself where have I been? That vibe at the end was insane, a new fan. That bass player was sick, right in the pocket.
This is my favourite kind of comment 😁. They are so unbelievably talented it's ridiculous. Bass player is ridiculous isn't he. Secretly my favourite one of the 3 I think
I sometimes record some music and I am playing around with intruments. When I see/hear people like this, I almost give up., So f-ing talented it hurts! O man... I wish I were like them.
Yeah, shook! That’s what this song leaves you with, shook! I laughed and laughed at your final bit of reaction, Charlie 😂😅😂 For me it propels me into a new universe, especially at the end, and with great speed! 🚀 That funky groove is unbearably good, and yes, Henrik with his bubbly little triplets and offbeat notes does a lot to give it that damn funkiness. But then, Aron…and how he locks in with Henrik’s bass playing (or maybe the other way around, cause it’s mostly Henrik laying down the final track when Aron and Jonah have already recorded theirs.) And Jonah’s singing? Out of this world, again. Btw, he’s done ALL the vocal layers, choirs and all, despite what it looks like in the vid. Others might comment more on how that vocal harmonization process went :) One thing you might find interesting to check out, is Henrik’s interview on bass magazine.com/Songified, where he explains a bit about the making of this album. I see if I can add the link underneath, otherwise just google it :) So glad that DLoops have blown your mind once more. Looking forward to heaps more Dirty Loops reactions from you. The Best! 👍🔥👍
You know, I realize that there is some production values added by the Immortal Q in the studio, and many layers of vocals added, But... this is 3 guys.... THREE GUYS!!! Three guys that make an insane amount of music come out at an insane rate, and each piece is it's own "masterpiece"! I have yet to see a "first reaction" video, and I mean first time hearing this band, that Doesn't end up with the same thought, Who The Heck Are These Guys? There is a TH-cam channel, Stratelle Studios, whose "owner"(?) was, through pure serendipity, contacted by Jonah because of his reaction to this very song. In the of their correspondence, Jonah agreed to do a Zoom interview with Jeff! It was 1 - 1.5 hrs of just 2 guys having a chat about music. Extremely humble, almost embarrassed at times. I got the impression that Jonah has no idea how talented he is. He just knows that this is what he loves to do, and appreciates that someone else enjoys what he does! Their song writing process will blow you away. Give this a listen. It's well worth the time. Thanks for another great reaction. P.S. You've been officially Loopafied!
Quincy Jones is just their manager though, and they're producing everything themselves, with some help from Simon Petrén. And they sounded like this before QJ's management as well. They've said in interviews that they don't send Quincy Jones anything, not even demos, until they're all done with it, video and all. 🙂
@@lottawiklund8606 I understand everything you said here, and agree completely. They sound this amazing Live! Having said that, to think that one would send a project to Q and not allow him to add.... I just don't see it. Q is genius enough to know when Not to change "perfection", but... a simple addition to enhance!? Why wouldn't you want that? Aaron and Henrik edit every video, and I'm pretty sure that is not changed, but you can see in the credits that there is added percussion, or small amounts of keyboard. Jonah does all the backup harmonies, occasionally with help from Aaron. Henrik likens his voice to goose farts on a muggy day, and therefore. .. not much from him. These guys are amazing, no question. They Could stand alone, without doubt. Having Q as your manager... why not take some help, no matter how small!?
@@garygraham2513 Because they want to do everything themselves and have full control. And their contract is just for management. I listened to an interview with Henrik and Aron in a Swedish podcast (Skiss), where they said they learned from that first round, with Loopified, that they very much prefer doing most stuff themselves, and just hire someone to help with the stuff they find boring, like management, travel booking and such. I guess that's just the way they work. Even when they released Loopified and had a full contract with Verve. they produced everything themselves, except one song on the Japanese edition on the album, even though they had feedback from David Foster. It's just the way they work, I guess. I only know what I've heard them say in interviews. 🙂 And as a side note, it's Aron that does all the editing, sometimes with some help from Simon Petrén. Never heard anything about Henrik being involved with that bit, and never seen it listed in any of the credits of their videos. And I think Henrik is being a bit harsh on himself when it comes to singing. He used to sing backup vocals when they played live, in their early days, and did a good enough job of it, if you ask me. 😃
@@garygraham2513 I feel the same exact way. It's rather difficult to believe that, regardless of how good you are, you can be in such close proximity to greatness like Quincy Jones and he adds absolutely nothing? Nope!
They did this all by themselves before Jones. Jones started with them on Turbo. So yeah for everything before Turbo, he literally added nothing, because that was all them.
I may be a year late or so but Charlie your reaction is absolutely SPOT ON. What a song . . . a musical masterpiece! By the way Charlie what type headset do you use?
You might already know, Scott, their sound engineer, mixer and producer is Simon Petrén, another Swedish super musician, who’s been working with DL since their early days. He’s now mainly working for big K-pop artists. There are two interviews with him on YT, and it’s just so interesting to find out a bit about his approach to arranging/mixing/mastering and producing…. He’s a musical monster. ☺️
Don't be so hard on yourself Charlie. I'm 64 yrs old, been "playing" guitar/bass for over 45 years and don't have much to show for it. H&A at the mike was just for the video. ALL backing vocals layered by Jonah.
woke up, put coffee on, started this vid. A great start to a day. thanks Charlie. This song was too "cheese" for me first time through. I struggled with it. It was kind of DLs "Happy Hardcore" with enforced happiness, and I generally like to choose my emotions in listening and have the ability to go dark and mysterious in my thoughts. This song does not let me do that. By about the 3rd listen I was able to listen and enjoy it fully and start letting it in and hearing the musical nourishment. Now it's one of my favorites to listen to with reactors, and share IRL, though am not yet just choosing to listen to it on my own.
Been a fan of yours for a while now but just watched your reaction to this amazing. Prime Toto at their peak. The harmonies the melody the funky jazzy direction and at 2/3rds through this track it heads off into the stratosphere. Amazing. Love it... Remember prime Toto. Charlie keep doing what you do.....❤❤❤
Another great reaction to DL, especially the sound that your Stank Faceometer made at 1:36! I literally laughed out loud! Don't know if someone has reported to you yet but your Instagram link in your description takes us to a "Not Found" page. I found it. It was just missing "the". 😃 - Cydster
I think that DLoops and Jonah are signed with Quincy, but are producing everything themselves, not even sending him demos before they bring out anything new. I think tho, that Quincy played a major role in promoting Jonah and Dirty Loops. There’re quite a few promotional vids on his Facebook and website… He also staged a big star live event featuring Jonah together with Marcus Miller, Chaka Khan, Richard Bona etc. 😊
These guys are phenomenal. Probably too complex for untrained and non-musical ears, but who cares; they’re heavenly good for the rest of us. I’m so happy that music like this is still made and that musicians of this extreme caliber exist.
He mostly sits in the background a bit, but holy smokes, what a drummer/composer/arranger/lyricist/video editor and all-round artist he is! 🔥 I’m in total awe of Aron and can see what you mean, Tapio….
They are amazing on record, but I still haven't found a live video in which they are at least half... or a quarter... or a tenth as good as they are on record.
I must agree. I think this is true of most of their live videos. From an instrumentation aspect, the live versions are really good. But it does always feel like something is missing.
Could be a sound quality/mixing thing? Their production is out of this world and when you then get the live sound back through an iPhone mic it’s obviously not a great mix of sounds anymore. People who have seen them live seem to think they sound just as good in a live setting as on the record. Just my thoughts on the subject.
Have you seen this one btw? th-cam.com/video/3c-ZYK2sbnQ/w-d-xo.html It has some decent sound since it’s on national TV and the biggest mainstream music event we have here in Sweden. They covered and loopified last years winner here and people were so confused cause like I said this is such a super mainstream event. 😂 Dirty loops shared some bad reviews they got from this on their socials having a good laugh about it. Gotta love these guys! 😅
@@linusottosson5425 yeah “Undo” is an unreal live performance! 🔥 Absolutely unbelievably good. And like you I think their live recordings mostly sound flawed because they’re recorded on iPhones… Would love to hear them in a live concert tho!! 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you for watching Lasse. Breakdown will indeed be the next reaction
Another great reaction to DL, especially the sound that your Stank Faceometer made at 1:36! I literally laughed out loud! Don't know if someone has reported to you yet but your Instagram link in your description takes us to a "Not Found" page. I found it. It was just missing "the". 😃 - Cydster
Next one: Breakdown
Yes, that is a beautiful song!
Please watch Snarky Puppy with the song Lingus!! This one will blow your mind!!!
If I'm not mistaken Quincy Jones is often involved with Dirty Loops and Jonah.
I think that DLoops and Jonah are signed with Quincy, but are producing everything themselves, not even sending him demos before they bring out anything new. I think tho, that Quincy played a major role in promoting Jonah and Dirty Loops. There’re quite a few promotional vids on his Facebook and website…
He also staged a big star live event featuring Jonah together with Marcus Miller, Chaka Khan, Richard Bona etc. 😊
You can really hear Quincy Jones bleeding through this track. Echo's of Michael Jackson at his height.
These guys are phenomenal. Probably too complex for untrained and non-musical ears, but who cares; they’re heavenly good for the rest of us. I’m so happy that music like this is still made and that musicians of this extreme caliber exist.
🌋🌋🌋
Aron just don't get enough credits imo!
He mostly sits in the background a bit, but holy smokes, what a drummer/composer/arranger/lyricist/video editor and all-round artist he is! 🔥
I’m in total awe of Aron and can see what you mean, Tapio….
React to Sia ... " Alive " the live performance in the Graham Norton Show
Those vocals
actually a song where i didnt like the intro that much but then ..
Mono sucks.

It has some decent sound since it’s on national TV and the biggest mainstream music event we have here in Sweden.
Absolutely unbelievably good.
And like you I think their live recordings mostly sound flawed because they’re recorded on iPhones…
Would love to hear them in a live concert tho!! 🔥🔥🔥
