A few years back a friend sent me a link to Work Shit Out which I got at 4am. I was so blown away just listening on the tablet. This was the stuff.. I ran into the music room and put it on the big system. I had been in a funk believing there was nothing of any value or quality in contemporary music. You shattered that illusion with music that was so invigorating , tight, skillful and downright fun. Great to see you at Rick's place.
Lyle Mays ended up removed from the music scene, disillusioned. He was never recognized in life for the value of what he did, personally I think he is one of the best pianists after Bill Evans. Not only in his quality as a pianist but in the innovativeness of his sounds. Lyle was also a great person, a great gourmet and coach of his city's children's soccer team. Speaking of musicians, Milton Nascimento told me what a wonderful person he was. I miss his presence every day.
Musicians are the WORST audience to have though, they never lose themselves in the music like a "normal" fan would/does! They just stare at the band playing, working out their techniques, analysing the styles and seeing/hearing if there's anything they can use themselves! Then their partner nudges/pokes them in the ribs..and says...."Song's finished!?!" Replied by "oh yeah! Sorry!" 🤷♂️🤦♂️🙈🤣🤣🤣

'Work Shit Out' is a masterclass in music on so many levels: composition, arranging, musicianship, production, etc. Rick, I would love to see/hear you do a breakdown of this song. My jaw dropped the first time I heard it - and it still floors me after multiple listens.
Such dopey lyrics, then an insanely great impressionistic Chopinesque/Lyle Mays/Pat Metheny Group piano solo, then the greatest drum solo ever to be hidden inside a pop song, then it ends all too soon. I wish it had a face-melting Henrik Linder bass solo as well.
HOLY CRAP. After watching YOUR interview I've spent the next few hours educating myself on the music of Dirty Loops. THANK YOU RICK Great music is indeed being made by these incredible YOUNG musicians. As soon as they mentioned Lyle Mays I knew "this aint just some average band."
Thousands upon thousands of bands put up videos online. The difference is some bands are just so good, that once it starts playing, the person listening is fully engaged. The first time I saw a Dirty Loop video it was the Baby tune... and it was insanely great and I watched it many times.
100% this. Its not about marketing with technical music. Its about mixing. Composition, video quality, and talent. With pop bands its just who you know
I remember the first time I heard Dirty Loops on TH-cam, that first black and white video, I was backstage at a festival in Switzerland and I grabbed the rest of the band and shared it around everyone to see… these guys are ‘musicians musicians’ we all agreed. Fast forward to several years later we were doing a show in Japan and Dirty Loops were in town also doing a show the following night. We invited them to ours, and then we went to theirs. Top humans in real life too!
As an old timer jazz pianist, it gives me a good feeling that so many fusion, jazz, funk bands are having a lot of success with young listeners. It would seem the public has a more sophisticated listening taste than I used to give them credit for.
I guess with things like Spotify and You Tube it's a lot easier to get exposed to these genres. It doesn't cost anything to listen and unlike myself, I was always very picky with my album purchase back in the day and likely missed out on a lot.
Within seconds of hearing Dirty Loops for the first time, I realized I will never be anything close to what you can call "talented" when it comes to music. Three of the most brilliant minds you will find. Looking forward to listening to this one
…everyone politician in Sweden that wants to cut down the contribution for culture and musicschools should listen to this. Music education and the ability to borrow intrument and have place for rehersal is SO important! 🙌🇸🇪
These guys are brilliant. The Turbo album that they did with Cory Wong during the pandemic was absolutely dope too, considering they did it all remotely.
Agree. It was also an unexpected collab. I managed to discover a lot of music during Covid lockdowns! But I’m glad I can see my favourite local jazz band (The Consouls) do their vgm jazz thing live again. Streams are great but nothing beats being in the room.
Two things: Social media is obviously the modern way for artists to promote their work but the artists talked about, Jacob, Vulf, Snarky, Corey and DL are the most talented musicians in the world today who also have the visual production talent as well. Another thing they all have in common which I believe is natural because of their talents is widespread collaboration. And please let me tell you a quick DL story; We purchased their M&G package really only to get early admission because there’s no way we weren’t getting to the rail for their show. I am not a musician, I can only play the volume knob on my stereo but these three men were so gracious. They were actually standing in front of the stage waiting to greet our group as we entered the venue. They made a point to shake hands and greet everybody individually. They invited the group on stage to see and talk about all the gear. They were so humble and so welcoming. As people they left such a positive impression on me. As for the shows, I’ve seen all of the modern musicians mentioned and DL certainty fits in this elite group of musicians. I wish they played more shows in the Northeast on this tour. We did two shows and I tried and tried to get to more but timing and last minute expensive flights just couldn’t work for me. I hope they come back this way sooner than later!! We saw JC last night and we’ll also see him in NYC Friday night. I didn’t think it was possible for JC to perform better than the last tour but he has raised the bar again!! Or as we all know, musically He is “the bar”. Stunning performance on many levels. Just like the lyric Lin wrote; “Look around…. We’re so lucky to be alive right now” Rock on!!
Great stories, Brian! Great comment and thoughts too 👍 I have yet to see DLoops or Jacob live, but think these would be the performances of a lifetime! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I just saw them in Vancouver. I'm not typically keen on rock concerts that demand hours of standing, but as a novice bass player, I couldn't pass up the chance to witness a bass god up close. The next day's backache? Completely worth it!
I love their original music! I was talking with my bassist about Dirty Loops and how they should be on the charts instead of boring TikTok loops. Incredible playing and vocals.
maybe controversial, but i think they're better off not being tiktok stars. i mean... they have their way more invested and loyal audience, they pack the places they perform at, make probably way above average living by doing what they love and most importantly they are by no means influenced by external feedback. i guess, if they would go superfamous worldwide, not on purpose, but because of the ever-rising expectations and the statistics, they would care a lot more about what the general public thinks (still saying, it's just human nature). now instead of the bigger half of the world's population, they attract a very targeted crowd, which leaves room for way more artistic freedom. and it's just an added plus that they probably don't have to separate themselves entirely from the outside world like the most known celebrities do, i mean gazillions of dollars and all, but if you can't go out to the streets without being ambushed by fans it's like living in a jail cell.
Saw them live 10 years ago in Denver and again a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to meet them. They are sooooo nice and generous. They have been my FAVORITE band since their first TH-cam videos. I REALLY hope they don't wait another 10 years to return to the USA!
I discovered them through that NAMM performance of Just Dance. And that's when Henrik became my favorite bassist ever. He thumps, slaps, nails killer pulloffs, and harmonics. On a six string Mattison with tempered frets. He is a bassist's bassist.
We saw them live in San Francisco in 2014 just as they were getting started. Saw them again last week. So stoked at the success and recognition they are getting
Growing up with music and actually allowing your children to study and then pursue a career in music - it's unheard of these days. But it did make some phenomenal bands.
These guys’ talent speaks for itself…. But I’m glad social media has served them (and the world) so well, in getting their music to us. Thank you, Rick and Dirty Loops.
I would have not heard of Dirty Loops were it not for TH-cam. I was watching various bass players like Federico Malaman, drummers like Gergo Borlai, keyboard players like Valeriy Stepanov, etc. and the TH-cam algorithm suggested that I might like this band. The algorithm was correct! I love Dirty Loops. Excellent musicians and great music.

I always felt there were two outstanding bands from the last decade still to be interviewed by your goodself. Ok, you got the Loops and now we just need an interview with Knower!
One of my favorite artists from Sweden that nearly NOBODY knows about, Salem Al Fakir, opened my eyes to the incredible talent coming from that country! Discovered him around the mid 2000s and had a similar sound to Dirty Loops, less on the jazz fusion but heavy on the soul/r&b, gospel, and rock, but production style was very similar. He’s mainly a violinist, so the depth of his music stems mostly from orchestral styles. Sweden is definitely powerhouse of musicians!
@@ingefiddle definitely check out his first album This Is Who I Am. It’s not on any streaming service unfortunately 😞 It’s here on YT or I’m sure you can find a bootleg somewhere. I was SO happy to see these guys in your studio!! I only recently became aware of Dirty Loops. I was (and I remain) absolutely floored by these guys! I have introduced them to anyone who will listen! Thank you for this interview! (edited to add... After hearing Jona mention the Metheny tune Heat of the Day. I listened. I could HEAR how that inspires Jonah to this day. Amazing!)
I am happy that Aron mention Yellowjackets Will Kennedy. He was one of the first drummers I fell in love with, besides Steve Smith. ’. Fughin loved Yellowjacket back then. And still :) Aron is a rock in DL. Talk more about him!
I've loved this band since first contact, and I know a LOT of drummers here in Brazil who really never got the approach to tuning their kit, but I did, so really surprised to hear that the problem is not so local. If ever around I would be honored to tweak your DW, the only kit I would trade for mine. Best of luck to the band and congrats on the channel.
I feel like I've been living under a rock. Why have I never heard of Dirty Loops? Thank you so much Rick for the interview. I'm listening to everything they have done and they are amazing. I definItely hear Lyle Mays in Jonah's playing. In some of their early videos, the arrangements sound to me like some of the things Ross and Gino Vanelli did in the 70s only much funkier.
Swedens musical education, that starts from a very young age, is probably the best in the world. Although, the very first instrument they taught us was the recorder. Every parents worst nightmare.
This is definitely the best band of the last decade! I discovered them while searching for a cover of Rolling in the Deep. Henrik Linder is my favorite bassist.
Sooo glad you got these guys on Rick and they deserve the exposure that your channel offers them so much 👏🏻👏🏻 Amazing musicians and so humble considering how gifted they are. REN is another artist who has done an amazing job at promoting his music on social media, especially TH-cam.
I remember the first time I saw their Bieber cover. I thought it was fake; I honestly thought it wasn't possible to do what they were doing without all kinds of overdubs. I later realized I was wrong 😊. Just phenomenal musicians.
This band brought me out of a terrible funk a few years back. I heard 'Follow the Light' and Dirty Loops changed my life. I went through their entire catalogue and was blown away by the quality of their music. I wish they would come to Australia. I'd love to see them live. That would be amazing.
It made my day to see how down to earth and positively sweet these guys are. They are three of the best musicians on planet Earth, and have zero attitude or ego. I love them even more now.
These guys are amazing. I haven't kept up with what they've been doing, but those covers they did a few years ago blew my mind. They also recorded the best version of the Samsung Galaxy theme song.
Yes, great players, great people, great band, great music. And wonderful that Lyle Mays gets such a solid mention. He was an exceptional player whose nuanced musicality made him unique in a world where flash and speed tend to dominate the narrative. We should also remind ourselves that these lads are all speaking English as a second language. They're articulate, personable, have great vocabulary and express themselves without the need for cliches and profanity (not that Rick would tolerate the latter). Plus, it's probably safe to say that bottles of Jack Daniels, a bag of medicinals and a bowl M&Ms with no brown ones are unlikely to be on their tour rider.
I won't see any band live that doesn't have a "No brown M&Ms!" contract rider. How do they know the venue set up for their 42-ton lighting truss without this essential check that it actually followed their tour specifications?!
These guys are insanely talented. I was so excited to hear their first couple of covers back then and played them over and over again. I even captured the audio of their videos so I could keep listening to them. For me it was their cover of 'Circus' that blew me away.
I saw these guys at Irving Plaza a couple weeks ago. I bought tickets after seeing maybe three of their videos on YT and being blown away-- their cover of 'Thriller' with Corey Wong locked it down. They put on a hell of a show-- three massively talented guys. TIt will be nice to remember having seen them in one of my favorite venues when I can't afford to see them at MSG in a few years.
We used to reherse wall to wall with Dirty Loops some years ago. Not my kind of music, but you have to be amazed of how great they are. Even in rehersal they sound better then everthing elese😃😃😃
Dirty Loops might be easily the best trio on the planet. Beyond their superb musicianship, this guys knows each other from forever. That kind of complicity when they communicate easily without talking while they play.
Thriller and Work Sh!t Out are mandatory listening for anyone with taste in music. (among other songs) Reaction channels helped "viral-ize" these guys and keep their stuff in the algorithm.
Great interview! And that note that Jonah hits in Breakdown is actually Bb5. Just a little more than two octaves below the right end of an 88 key grand piano (which would be C8). Damn impressive! And the way he cries it is beautiful.
Rick thank you for keeping your finger on the pulse of current music. Most boomers just dig into their 4 decade old opinions so it's so great to see someone with your platform and influence remain completely excited by new music! yes Salem al Fakir is a total genius. He changed career path a bit. His first albums are phenomenal.
Amazing!)
Yes! From the moment I experienced listening to them, every single person - and I mean it , LITERALLY - heard me talking about them.
Haha, same here!
And now these good people are giving me their albums as birthday and Christmas presents! Yes!! 👍🤘👌🤟
Brecker Bros in Barcelona is amazing, so happy to hear a shout out
I am happy that Aron mention Yellowjackets Will Kennedy. He was one of the first drummers I fell in love with, besides Steve Smith. ’. Fughin loved Yellowjacket back then. And still :)
Aron is a rock in DL. Talk more about him!
Would absolutely LOVE an interview with Aron!
This interview is mind blowing. Hearing one of my favorite bands talk about the other is simply orgasmic.
So happy to see this. I've been a big fan of Dirty Loops for close to a decade now and rarely hear their name mentioned. Awesome group.
These guys are each incredible, but Henrik is absolutely insane. ❤
Swedish people are always soooooo humble. These guys are great!!
Ever heard of Yngwie Malmsteen... there are always exceptions :)
I've been sharing Dirty Loops with jazz aficionados and every one of them loves their stuff.
Swedens musical education, that starts from a very young age, is probably the best in the world. Although, the very first instrument they taught us was the recorder. Every parents worst nightmare.
This is so exciting!!! I saw them in LA on April 13. They are amazing. But why didn't they make the cut to the regular Rick Beato channel?
have been following dirty loops since the "baby" era
they are just truly incredible, and ow gosh their Runaway song is just a masterpiece
This is definitely the best band of the last decade! I discovered them while searching for a cover of Rolling in the Deep. Henrik Linder is my favorite bassist.
Sooo glad you got these guys on Rick and they deserve the exposure that your channel offers them so much 👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing musicians and so humble considering how gifted they are.
Utterly original experience listening to these guys... and they seem equally down to earth in this interview.
Thank you, Rick. I’ve been listening to them non-stop for the last 5 years. Refreshing to hear such musical talent.
Finally Rick mentions Cory Wong. I'd love to hear them in conversation.
Dear Rick, i couldn't believe it: my favorite TH-camr Rick interviewing my favorite band Dirty Loops. Thank you so much! Greetings from lower bavaria!
These guys are amazing. I haven't kept up with what they've been doing, but those covers they did a few years ago blew my mind. They also recorded the best version of the Samsung Galaxy theme song.
That ringtone version is insane! ✌️😱🤘
"Work S**t Out" is insane. Jonah gave props to Pat Metheny Group's "The Heat of the Day," you can hear its influence. RIP Lyle Mays.
@@skierpage yes 👍
Circus! Yes!
Humble Swedes! “Jantenlagen” is alive and well with these phenomenal musicians. You guys are awesome!
Heinricks bass playing is sight to behold. hes up there with jaco, he is the jaco of 6 string bass
I could watch more 2 hours of that. Love Dirty Loops! Those dudes are legends!
I keep writing it because it is true: You did it again, Rick! Great interview with a great band! Thank you!
I found the loops on youtube. I was amazed. You don’t get artists of this quality on radio. Have bought their albums. Really sensational band.
Dirty Loops might be easily the best trio on the planet. Beyond their superb musicianship, this guys knows each other from forever. That kind of complicity when they communicate easily without talking while they play.
Thriller and Work Sh!t Out are mandatory listening for anyone with taste in music. (among other songs)
Reaction channels helped "viral-ize" these guys and keep their stuff in the algorithm.
For me it’s Rock You and Lost in You. Check those out if you haven’t 😁
I love how the build-up to and the piano solo in Work Shit Out is a pure homage to "The Heat of the Day".
Great interview! And that note that Jonah hits in Breakdown is actually Bb5. Just a little more than two octaves below the right end of an 88 key grand piano (which would be C8). Damn impressive! And the way he cries it is beautiful.
This was a meeting/interview I waited a long time to see. Four great persons!
Love Dirty Loops! I've been following them since the Adele Rolling in the Deep cover. Amazing talented musicians!
Finally. It’s time for these guys with insane talents to shine.
Rick thank you for keeping your finger on the pulse of current music. Most boomers just dig into their 4 decade old opinions so it's so great to see someone with your platform and influence remain completely excited by new music!
Been a Dirty Loops fan since 2019, and become obsessed with this whole new slew of ridiculous musicians, Jacob Collier, Dirty Loops, Cory Wong, Adam Neely etc... New music is in good hands.
Check out our stuff if you happen to see this comment 🙂
This boomer loves it too!! We grew up with a multitude of genres. Listening to jazz when I was 13, african music, all thru the 60s-70s. When I first heard them doing coffee break, my brain lit up like a quasar... Something new, and not only new, brilliant!! Sigh...
😍😍😍Thank you Rick, for this one! They need to be seen, they need to be heard!
