Incorrect. The longest game in Smash History is when I left my console on overnight to unlock Mewtwo.
True
It worked like those old rumor you'd hear on the playground during recess. I remember I used Rpy cause I thought he was OP when I unlocked him lol. It blew my mind when I saw the Fight Screen for Mewtwo
honestly big respect to boom. Man saw the problem, warned everyone about it and then proceeded to demonstrate why exactly it was a problem when no one listened to him.

Yugioh has a simmilar thing with deck sizes.
Back in thr day their was no deck limit. The limit was if u can shuffle it.
So some gigachafs made this homemade tower containing every single 4 copies of every card in the game. Making it like 5
6000 cards or something stupid.
He won a couple of games because players refused to play against it. But when someone finally decided to play him they timed out because it took ages to shuffle the deck.
@mr.voidroy6869 its 3 copies of a card and i believe it was slightly over 4000 cards for the deck his friends had to help him shuffle every time he needed to
Bro learning the origin of Gerson Boom's name after all these years and it coming from a smash 64 set of all things feels like discovering the Rosetta Stone, incredible!

Wow the end with Brawl Taunts what a throwback
I make it a yearly ritual to rewatch them all every year.
Only the OGs know bout that one
All these years and I only just realized Kirby's eyes in that clip is a 69
Yeah that was nostalgic
Just noticed that Ike is voiced by Tomar
It's really crazy how the stage meta has changed through time.
64 had to choose the best of the worst yet now we have Ultimate and choose to play on about 3 of over 100 potential stages, ruling out perfectly decent stages because of silly things like 'there's a slight slant',
To add insult to injury, Lylat Cruise is legal, and was in Smash 4 where it was objectively broken, whereas other potential legal stages were always outright dismissed
@@Trogdorbad And to make it even worse, now that Lylat is a perfectly fine stage with all its issues patched out, it's been banned by like 90% of NA tournaments due entirely to negative perception.
Cuz it's an ugly, uncomfortable TRI plat stage that encourages spammy burst options & projectiles. You want that buddy?@@bobbafett5175

Glad you mentioned the Undertale fact about Gerson Boom. Another fun part of it is that in Deltarune it's revealed that his son's name is Alvin (after another Peruvian Smash 64 legend who was mentioned in this video). Always good to see you upload again.
Isn't Alvin his brother?

It's a Christmas miracle, GRsmash uploaded!
I’m a 64 player and you did an excellent job covering this saga, also the editing is really next level
I'm one of the ex-leaders of the Smashboards 64 backroom, and I wrote the first tournament ruleset removing Hyrule Castle from neutral picks (I'm in the video as asianaussie)
boom's opinions on Hyrule date back for a long, long time and were widely regarded as extreme by Smashboards posters - I distinctly remember him saying Link goes from bottom 3 tierwise to top 3 on Hyrule because of how overwhelmingly powerful his circle camping is - for perspective, this is like saying there's a legal stage that puts Melee Kirby or Bowser into top tier
His arguments about Hyrule were a big part of the english-speaking community moving to DL-only - they certainly convinced me
Turns out, he was right. When the most skilled players of a game are telling you something is wrong, LISTEN.
@@B3Band i disagree because many are self serving idiots(leffen) or eccentrics with bad takes(esam). Many games suffer if they listen only to the elite players.
Glad to meet someone who was a part of the Smash 64 backroom and was a part of this iconic moment in FGC history on YT!
I’m subbed to SaBoom’s YT channel myself, and he doesn’t upload videos to it often now (mainly because he continuously streams practice speed-runs on Twitch). He still does upload some Smash 64 stuff though.
@@B3Band the problem was that other skilled players like Isai were in disagreement.
You are so real for the Brawl Taunts ending. Thanks for another epic video
Lesss goooo more top tier grsmash videooooos!
Where papa?
Man, excellent polish on the editing. The way graphics don't just pop in but smoothly materialize and how each scene isn't a cut but instead a pan and tilt with accompanying swoosh sound - it all adds so much life. That zoom across key moments of the match at 11:58 was particularly slick and offered such a good impression of the length without needing to showing the whole thing. It's all so natural that it's easy to miss how much work would've gone into this. Really great work 👏
As someone who loved your channel back in the early days when you had "the humor of an edgy teenager," I gotta say this is an amazing video. Well-researched, crisply paced script, and incredibly well-edited. Excellent work!
Huge props for mentioning the inbox system. I really miss the early convos I had with followers. I can't fathom how TH-cam hasn't made a new pm system
How does the old name of this channel being "ghost rager" affect the "GRSmash is Green Ranger" legacy?
probably kills it
Dad's finally back with the milk.
The fact that a TURTLE merchant references this is amazing. Genius.
This video makes me appreciate more the current state of Melee and Ultimate. While it may be annoying to see Sonic, Jigglypuff or Steve camp so much, we don’t know how much worse it could get. Tahmks for coming back! Merry Christmas!
If you cant solve the problem, become the problem.
First a video about the best rivalry I’ve ever heard of (Im team Dennys btw) and now a we’re blessed with another incredible smash doc
We missed you GrSmash, you’re an absolute legend
Shoutout to Elise Avery who also did a solid vid on this game. Smash 64 has a lot of overlooked content compared to Melee, 4, and Ult, so seeing more media on wild 64 sets would be a blessing.
fairly recent video too, are people just now finding out about this match?
Not too many people play 64 competitively compared to the other games in the series. It couldn’t even reach 200 entrants at smash con this past year, while Ultimate had more than 2,600
@@trueblueryu5713How many did Smash 4 get? Just curious, as I've been finding Smash 4 to feel better to play than Ultimate.

@@yawg691 Huh. I thought there'd have been less honestly, considering the near total lack of Smash 4 content on TH-cam these days.

Hope that is indicative of you doing well in life rn
Happy holidays man, cheers
Bro became the villain to prevent the blooming of any further villains. o7
Great video! Glad to see 64 highlighted, even in this context. Also funny to see how deep you dug on Smashboards, most of those names are still playing and attending events frequently to this day.
Side note, feel real bad for that BarkSanchez guy after that tragic SD, hope he's doing ok.
I’m glad he quit the game forever
I had no idea about this aspect of the Smash 64 scene, and your video was incredible. The depth of information combined with the amazing improvement in your editing skills truly made this standout. I'm genuinely impressed and can't wait to see more videos from you in this style. Keep up the fantastic work!
love to see some 64 content, a GRsmash smash 64 video on christmas its a miracle
It's so nice to see you uploading again, I also really dig this style of content just as much as highlight videos.
Also I love the new profile pic
Aside from the amazing video, I think the content you produced was extremely impactful for the time. It wouldn't really hold up in the youtube of today but genuinely so many smash players I talked to have recommended your videos to beginners and that's what sparked their interest in how someone is doing the cool shit they are seeing on screen. I think they also helped a lot with the overall cluing people into certain narratives of the time. I think going towards this kind of content is what's best overall in this landscape but I will always go back to old videos because they are so rewatchable.
GRsmash upload at the very end of 2023 AND it features Runescape music?

Runescape music is everywhere
Let's be honest. We're not playing 19xx, but Smash Remix. Love all the stages they have added, along with the all new characters.
Same bro, Smash Remix is probably my favorite Smash Mod of all time, that above Project M to be honest
Fantastic Christmas present, great to see you back GR.
Also funny how the Deltarune character, Alvin, is also named after a 64 player who got mentioned here.
I've been watching your vids since 2015, they were a huge part in getting me into melee and the community. I really love seeing this video
Beautifully put! I’ve been a long time smash fan and even this tale flew above my head! Thank you for such a wonderful video!!!
Nice to see people talking about Smash 64! Very well made video, you have my 64 historian seal of approval, congratulations!
Honestly, your videos are pretty entertaining. Gonna miss the compilation bits but fr fr these videos are very well written
I love how not a single tournament organizer seemed to consider using a timer outside of the game.
This would be difficult as you would need a 3rd party to start the timer otherwise one player has to start the timer so they're notably at a disadvantage if they're distracted at all.
It was considered, it’s just not in this 16 minute video
Man, I missed these kinds of videos GRsmash made even with the edge sense of humor lol. It's been a very long time my man. Hope you continue to make more vids in the future!
glad to see you back, been watching you for years

That transition screen with the time frames is a little eye melting. Really dope to have the game time displayed like that but the rush to the right was painful. 👍

Great and informative video, I liked the part where you explained the reasons why each stage is banned and would love to see that for melee too!!
New GRsmash vid just dropped, POGGIES
Ah yes, the “Hyrule Castle gets banned” set.

Quality video GR, i havent watched a video of yours for years, so the quality was a nice surprise
Thanks for the Christmas upload GRSmash! I've been watching you since the beginning. Always nice to see new videos from you.
Calm voice GRSmash is my sleep paralysis demon
14:58 It just occurred to me that Gerson Boom is probably a tortoise because tortoises are known for being agonizingly slow.
i love how he spends an hour stalling just to die 2-0
NY Giants lost to Jacksonville Jaguars on a dumb play right at the end, and the commentator said, "You played 59 minutes and 53 seconds to lose like this?"
A Giants player on defense successfully took the ball from Jacksonville, and instead of just falling down to end the game, he decided to try to run and score more points. HIS OWN TEAMMATE tried to stop him, and ended up tackling him, knocking the ball out of his hands. A Jacksonville player picked it up and immediately scored, winning the game.
@@B3Band thats pretty sad lol
GRSmash is back!
I want to see this record broken and a Smash Bros match that goes on for an entire day.
Peak video. I need a link to that last clip with Kirby and Ike because that was hilarious
11:03 Gerson's son in deltarune is named Alvin

Also the references of "Super Smashing Fighters" and Berdly complaining about how Kris "cheats" at the game. (Wavedashing)
And let's not forget about Sans' Mii Gunner costume either.
What a good christmas present. I don't play 64, melee is my thing but I absolutely love 64 as a spectator. The thing I look forward to most every year is Super Smash Con and the 64 combo contest. Its just so amazing.
NEW GRSMASH ITS A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE
I'm surprised this was from as late as 2014. Whenever I heard about this game, I always envisioned it happening in the 2000s
I know in the video he says that 64 is all about punish game, but i would argue around that wording I think.
I would say that since the punish game in 64 is so much stronger, that makes 64 all about the neutral game and not getting hit first.
Very good video. The only thing I'd note is that the uploader of the video who went to Peru also Herbert Von Karajan or Karajan for short (also known as Dajjal/Isai is Dead) was a pretty prolific 64 uploader. He's also known for making the first keyboard to PC adapter as there was a lot of 64 players who played on keyboard due to emulator play (such as me who switched over to Hori ages ago.)
Your editing skills have improved immensely dude, they definitely didn't go unnoticed. Great video!

wow, great timing! Elise Avery also released a video about this lately, so it's cool to know more about this match!!!!!

This game is a classic
Playing or watching Dreamland on repeat is a deflating experience. Stage counterpicking brings variety and spice. I hope the professional scene brings back more legal stages.

Love the new direction for your channel.
I have been watching you for a long while now, and I don't think your early videos were bad. You can judge yourself for being immature, but you have always made enjoyable videos and that is what we kept/keep coming back for.
Smash history videos like these are so interesting. I’m looking for more vids similar to this and coney’s DK vs DDD brawl vid. I could watch them all day
we're so back.....
A GRsmash video on Christmas? Yes please
Respect to boom for basically saying “you people wont ban Hyrule, I’ll make you ban Hyrule”
Also I still say that Yoshi’s story should be a legal stage in smash 64
That would of course happen if they had access to the one from the single player mode since that one wouldn't have the issues
I lost respect for boom for being such a baby. His tactic only worked 1 in 3 games and in losers bracket anyway
@@jazzabighits4473
Boom would only get better with time and as he gets better, the matches would last even longer. Heaven forbid other players start emulating the style. In the end, it wasn't about "could players win a tournament eventually". It became "do TOs really want to have their tournaments potentially extended because of stages allowing such degenerate playstyles to thrive"?
Of course now that isn't a problem, but there is still the issue of camping at the advantage until the timer runs out.
@@Teknanam A tangential question: do you think wobbling should be allowed (with ice climbers in later smash games)?
How about combos past 300%?
It's kind of commonly accepted that if someone is doing an infinite or a combo past 300% they should end it before it gets there, or they're just stalling/wasting time/etc. Some tournaments also ban infinites like wobbling?
That being said, the matches wouldn't last longer. If he was better he would go in and end them sooner. Literally nobody wants to watch a fighting game where the players avoid eachother the entire time. Or any sort of game really (unless it's tag or hide and seek).
Imagine playing chess and both players decide to move their knights forward and back over and over until one of them either gives up or does something else. Even if that was the world champion, Carlsen, everyone would boo him and the opponent.
Maybe, like chess, you could have it so that if a certain layout is repeated a few times (e.g. circular camping around the stage 3 times or for 45+ seconds), the game is ended automatically (and forced a draw, so it discourages winners camping).
@@jazzabighits4473
I'm not seeing the relevance of those questions? None of those tactics are anywhere near as stally since they have a clear end. Especially with various Wobbling percent limits that were in place when it wasn't banned.
Nobody wants to watch a stally game, but the players in-game are not playing to entertain an audience. They are playing to win the game. Or at least that's the idea with competition. Clear rules and good game balance (not necessarily character balance) are meant to steer the players so that playing the win doesn't come at the cost of the game's competitive value. Not the players just choosing to play in ways that entertain others. As for the rule you suggested, the issue becomes needing people to watch over the matches. Because you can't just rely on the participants or random viewers due to lying and potential biases. You'd need tournament staff to watch. And not all tournaments have that kind of manpower.
Nice video, I can tell a lot of effort went into it!
GR Smash is back!
This video started with School Days playing. I already know it's gonna be a good video.
man I hope you get to post more! I know how long videos take, I hope you read this and have a happy new year!
as a smash 64 player ive been waiting for this video for so long
Conversely I don’t mind watching camping as long as it isn’t too prevalent like in brawl, very entertaining video, It’s interesting what lengths people will go to if they’re trying to be optimal
