Very professionally made video. Thank you. Collecting trophies in the game was always the most appealing part of the game, and now almost 30, and watching AsumSaus I realized I never even had them all lol. Maybe someday.
22:19 Bruh, I can't believe that. I would be so unbelievably tilted if that happened to me Also congrats on your world record! This video was very entertaining to watch.
27:27. Caught me off guard, cause up til this point I went from "it's solid video so far, not bad" to "what" to then 20 more minutes passed by and left wowed. Earned yourself at least one more subscriber right there. Great job!
Fun and interesting watch. In 2017 I started attempting to 100% every Super Smash Bros. game on stream. Although I didn't attempt to speedrun it and did those games in multiple stream sessions, it was fun doing them and also it taught me a lot about these games, for instance how to farm coins in Melee or how to get every single bonus. I even made my own checklist with every requirement for getting every trophy. So many hours of brainless grinding, but I still had a good time doing that.
I wonder what the most efficient strategy for the lottery is. I suspect "round up to ~90%" is a pleasant safe strat but it probably isn't the best usage of coins. Also, can someone more familiar with Melee's RNG mechanics tell me whether doing RNG manipulation would be viable for the lottery here.
Great question. SaveState is like the authority on RNG manip in Melee, and Fuzzyness knows a bit about it also. I watched a video covering it. There is a seed for Melee, so nothing is truly "random." It's probably possible to get on a cycle where you get the perfect number of trophies (with maybe a "name entry" or "random character select" thrown in there to change the seed.
It's certainly possibly to manipulate the RNG. A TAS could even brute force with a strategy like "make a savestate, play the lottery, if you don't get a new trophy reload and increase the price by 1 before playing again, repeat" and probably collect every lottery trophy with a lot of coins to spare. To be efficient and even do this in real time you'd have to figure out the relationship between coins spent and the trophy you eventually receive, reverse engineer the function that converts RNG seed to trophy, and calculate your current RNG seed at a given time (the last of which we know how to do).
That was a great video. I looked into the category before but didn't know the whole story. There was a running trend of every runner making a big error, but I guess that's bound to happen with such a long and complex category.
Incredible video. One thought-I know the 15 minute melee part with master hand is meant to be a break point of the run, but wouldn’t it be most optimal to grind coins during this part of the run? Dash dance with master hand for the 15 minutes would, theoretically, save 15 minutes. I know losing the break sucks, but thems the facts
That is exactly right. I intended on spending half of it taking a break and the other half grinding, but I accidentally started it as 1P instead of 3P, which would have meant my inputs didn't count. So I just took a full break haha.
How does this video only have 4000 views? With the amount of effort you put into it I think it deserves way more! Props to you for 1) Running the category and 2) Making the video. Well spent 47 minutes of my time!
Just the other day I was looking into dk64 speed run. It’s the game with the most collectibles ever & I thought a 100 percent run was crazy… but this was just insane on so many levels lol.. I truly respect the speed run community !

@@davidvkimball your guess is as good as mine at this point, as I don't think I've loaded up the save in close to 15 years! Although I do remember having an awful time getting a couple of the bonuses, and unlock conditions probably weren't documented quite as well back then... shooting star comes to mind?
The Giga Bowser disc read error happened to me twice. I wonder how common it is. I remember being pissed off the first time, the second time I quit playing for a week. I wouldn't have went back, but I decided to see if I could do it with a different disk. It worked the third time and it felt great. That being said, I wasn't speed running 100% trophies.
@@davidvkimball The worst part about it was, this was when you had to actually look hard to find out what to even do to get to that point. Then you had to look even harder to see if anyone else had the same problem, and if there were any solutions. Similarly, the same thing happened after waiting 5 hours to unlock Mewtwo. Oldschool melee could be brutal.
@@davidvkimball Yeah, learned about that one a little late. When we were waiting the first time for Mewtwo, the internet was young, and my friends and I weren't entirely sure we weren't being trolled. We knew mewtwo existed in the game, we just thought the unlock method was bullshit. When we finally waited out the time, and ended the match, we were so excited we almost lost the match. We won, then the infamous disc read error occurred.

Congratulations on the World Record! Truly well played sir.
One of the best speedrunning documentaries I’ve seen in awhile. It’s causing me to entertain the idea of running this category and even Brawl 100% in the distant future. Seems fun ngl
32:58 This is so relatable lmao. Half of my long speedruns are because I was going to do a short run, and then randomly figured, eh what the heck let's do it. And that's how I did an 18 hour long speedrun that I started at 7pm, my first long speedrun. They're honestly the most fun way to speedrun IMO. Too bad I don't have the time or resources to do those runs anymore Good video. GG on the sub 19 :)
Yes! And it would be about 20% faster than 1 person dash dancing in single player modes. However I didn't have access to any wavebirds, and also I'm not sure if it's faster than just using Master Hand in Training Mode.
Amongst the pain of losing horribly to my step brother and others in melee, where's the beauty of it all. The trophies, new game modes for both single player and multiplayer, the individual Smash the Target Challenges for each character, etc, the game really did make up a lot of my childhood gaming. This just about makes me want to pop it in my Wii and play
man I love that my brain went to boxx controller as soon as mashing crouch / dashdancing came up then 20 minutes later that exact strategy came back up. Great video man
Another awesome video, fantastic showcase of the absurdity that is All Trophies. Also glad to have been there to cheer you on for a handful of hours during your run, it was incredible to watch!
Is there anyone who's attempted a "unlock all custom special moves" speedrun for Smash 4? That was an interesting idea for a game mechanic that was stunted by lack of balance and the ridiculous time-sink.
My cousin and I did this a few years ago in a weekend. We got the 5000 KOs by setting a CPU Roy on level 9, and set our three characters to characters that drop quickly and have max launch distance in the settings. All we had to do was set the timer to infinite, then go to sleep. In the morning we had score display
@@davidvkimball I thought it did, but now googling I might be misremembering. Either way, a 99 minute match definitely got us a big chunk of those 5000
Hey man, just wanted to say you'll have a much larger audience soon. It's gotta be disheartening to only have 17k subs after the amount of hours I know making this video took, but the quality will get you there. I can only imagine every video you've made has taken this much care and attention, I plan on watching through the rest soon. Your use of music and transitions into the montages are already far more proficient than many other Melee content creators (hell, many content creators) with far larger subscriber counts (39:40 specifically sticks out to me as exceptional, though every one was pretty sick). Always cool to find smaller channels before they blow up, best of luck to you.
This was so well done! I hope you may garner some interest in maybe considering a video on the history of Brawl's All Challenges, as it is very similar to Melee's All Trophies with the few players that dared to try it out, funny miscalculations, accidental hour-saving discoveries, friendly competition, and more. RubberDuckyAssassin, the WR holder, is actually preparing to do his final run of All Challenges (and Brawl in general) very shortly. If anyone could honor his legacy for All Challenges and Brawl in general in video format, you'd be the guy, if this possibly interests you.
Yeah and some funny mishabs like Dragolina doing all challenges and hosting a charity event and you not accepting her run because there were a few internet issues on cruel brawl in a 43 hour run instead of just adding a penalty time or something because the 4k Views and 525 euros donated to charity were cleary not an indication for it being done and being seen. So quirky of you. Or the legacy of brawl that is built upon the pedo almolicious that you praised to such a high regard as a community and have seen as the great grandfather of the game until the game got a bit of attention and later too through the history video where everything had to be skipped that involved him, because that would make the game look bad. But who could forget the time where ducky too did allegedly something in a certain hotel room but stayed admin on the smash discord anyway when it was still up for debate. You know out of everything (and that is by far not all) that leaked out of your speedrunning community, i am truly wondering why nobody wants to run it even after getting so much mainstream attention by dragolina and i am really wondering why she even put so much time into this unholy abomination of a speedrunning community. There should rather be a video of the legacy of brawl and where it went horrible every single time.
this has gotta be hands down my favourite endurance run I've seen, thanks for the break down. This has me thinking about what a healthy sleep route could look like where you slot in lottery grind segments mid run with handing the controller off to Twitch chat (not likely ever to be leaderboard allowable, but an interesting run to pull off)
Thank you so much!! Also, that's a crazy idea. Would be fun for the category extensions section of speedrun.com - have a player hand it off to another player!

Haha, Armada's deadpan All Trophies joke is gold. Mad respect for getting a sick record on top of making this video, it was a great watch!
Thank you so much!
Haha yeah I think David might have whooshed that one
EDIT: Nah he knows lol
pretty much finished the documentary and omg that clutch sub 19 with the great fox gave me goosebumps!!!!
once again, amazing stuff. love to see more of these documentaries
Thank you so much!! Glad you enjoyed it!
It's seriously impressive what speedrunners put themselves through. These crazy challenges, especially ones that takes hours to complete, or are just really difficult, are seriously amazing. This community will never cease to amaze me
It's so fun to see what people are capable of!
"Ya know, I'm pretty close to sub 19..." My heart skipped at that. Really glad it payed off for you, this shit is wild.
Hahaha. Thank you so much!
Very professionally made video. Thank you. Collecting trophies in the game was always the most appealing part of the game, and now almost 30, and watching AsumSaus I realized I never even had them all lol. Maybe someday.
Hahaha. AsumSaus is amazing. I turn 30 in November, too. Thank you so much for watching.
Great video. That sub 19 realization and clutching the last trophy was “*chefs kiss*”
Thank you!!
22:19 Bruh, I can't believe that. I would be so unbelievably tilted if that happened to me
Also congrats on your world record! This video was very entertaining to watch.
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
the amount of melee jank in this video is hilarious and insane
27:27. Caught me off guard, cause up til this point I went from "it's solid video so far, not bad" to "what" to then 20 more minutes passed by and left wowed. Earned yourself at least one more subscriber right there. Great job!
Thank you so much!!!
Well done!!
Oh my god this is the most unhinged run I've ever seen in my life
Hahaha. Yeah it's insane
27:44 Ha that is a great twist!
42:04 Fricking nice! Gratz
Hahaha thank you so much!! I'm so glad you watched it! I had a lot of fun setting up those moments with pacing and music.
Matt confirmed consumer of good content
To be efficient and even do this in real time you'd have to figure out the relationship between coins spent and the trophy you eventually receive, reverse engineer the function that converts RNG seed to trophy, and calculate your current RNG seed at a given time (the last of which we know how to do).
thanks for having full english subs instead of just auto generated ones! awesome documentary!
You're welcome! They were pretty tedious to make haha, so thank you for noticing.
That was a great video. I looked into the category before but didn't know the whole story. There was a running trend of every runner making a big error, but I guess that's bound to happen with such a long and complex category.
Right? Thank you so much!
Dude, I have a lot of fun watching this vid, and I respect your commitment a lot. What a last second lottery roll!
Thank you!
How does this video only have 4000 views? With the amount of effort you put into it I think it deserves way more! Props to you for 1) Running the category and 2) Making the video. Well spent 47 minutes of my time!
Thank you so much!! Hoping to get more views soon. 😅
@@davidvkimball Curse the yt algorithm!!
@@djtuff3355 Right? Sometimes it's helped me though!
The world of speed-running never ceases to amaze me. So much dedication and time spent, nobody loves games more than speedrunners! Amazing video!
Thank you so much! And truer words have never been spoken haha.
Just the other day I was looking into dk64 speed run. It’s the game with the most collectibles ever & I thought a 100 percent run was crazy… but this was just insane on so many levels lol.. I truly respect the speed run community !
Getting the lucky sub 19 hour run was such a chad move lol
Hahaha thank you!!
This was an incredible display of tenacity! Awesome, awesome, awesome!! Also big thanks for putting music credits at the end, no fewer than 5 times during this did I catch myself groovin' like daaaaamn this beat SLAPS! Gonna love that album!
Thanks for the insane effort that you put into the run and then this video about it. New fan fosho!
Heck it, let's roll the dice!
Thank you so much!! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate the kind words.
It would be super interesting to see a full tas of this category.
I agree!
Wake up, babe, new DVK Melee doc
playing this game near daily when it came out, it took me more than 19 months to get all the trophies. love me some melee
Nice!
16:15 That timing with yoshi's egg and the music just can't be coincidence, it was very cool
😉
Such a well composed and edited video! Congratulations on your run too! Speedruns like these have always been the most fascinating to me!
Thank you!
This reminds me that I have a memory card somewhere with my old Melee save file with like 2 trophies left to get. I should finish them someday!
Totally! My guess is... Smash Coins trophy and Diskun?
@@davidvkimball your guess is as good as mine at this point, as I don't think I've loaded up the save in close to 15 years! Although I do remember having an awful time getting a couple of the bonuses, and unlock conditions probably weren't documented quite as well back then... shooting star comes to mind?
The idea of this run passed by me a few years ago, Im happy to see it come into fruition and I cant wait to see how it evolves further
Me too!
That's the most badass thing I've ever seen taking that 25% chance on the new trophy
Hahaha thanks!!
In all my years of playing SSBM, I've NEVER gotten a Celebi when I threw a Pokéball. I didn't even know Celebi was in the GAME 😂
llooool
After all these years of playing Melee, I had no idea Celebi was in this game
It has the most strict unlock criteria of anything except for the Diskun trophy, so it makes sense!
Fantastic video, thanks for all the explanations and congrats on getting world record! I see you've even got sub 18 now so good job!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Regardless, a rough experience indeed. I found running on Wii is a lot more reliable!
@@Poshriel You could do it in just 4 hours if you used Lightning Melee!
This is literally what I've always dreamed of thank you so much
I'm glad! You're so welcome
Just another reason to ban the boxx smh.
Incredible video David, I got chills at the beginning with the editing :)
Thanks Matt!! I hope I didn't break your B0XX controller. 😳
ncb1221's 5000 matches is one of the funniest speedrun blunders I've ever seen. what makes it interesting is he was the first person to even consider running the category so we got to see where the growing pains were. his face when he realizes lmaooo
Hahaha. Right? I'm surprised he decided to continue and finish the run after that.
Incredible video, David. Nothing to say more than incredible.
Thank you!!
This is truly epic. Man I thought Final Fantasy speedruns at 10 plus hours was a long time. But unbelievably, you made a 20 hour run actually sound interesting, and great storytelling here! I grew up with Smash Bros games and appreciate all the skills and efforts therein. Never in my life did i think I would ever get all the trophies, and here people are speedrunning it today haha. Congratulations on the World Record! Truly well played sir.
Thank you very much!
One of the best speedrunning documentaries I’ve seen in awhile. It’s causing me to entertain the idea of running this category and even Brawl 100% in the distant future. Seems fun ngl
Thank you!! That's some high praise, I really appreciate it. If you do run it hit me up!
Too bad I don't have the time or resources to do those runs anymore
Good video. GG on the sub 19 :)
Thank you for sharing your crazy speedrun story haha
There's now a sub 13 hour run on the leaderboards wow
That's right! The runner and I have been chatting!
You really killed it with this video, looking forward to future content from you. And congrats on the WR!
Thank you so much!!
can you use a wavebird controller to get 4 people to dash dancing at once?
Good! I think Melee is an amazing casual game!!
Congrats to you David, for what madness you were able to accomplish!
Thank you so much! "Madness" is quite accurate.
man I love that my brain went to boxx controller as soon as mashing crouch / dashdancing came up then 20 minutes later that exact strategy came back up. Great video man
Thank you!!
This category is insane. I've been playing Melee since I was a kid and have never gotten all the trophies. Mad props and that ending was so hype.
Thank you so much! You can still go back and collect 'em all. :)
Another awesome video, fantastic showcase of the absurdity that is All Trophies. Also glad to have been there to cheer you on for a handful of hours during your run, it was incredible to watch!
Thanks dude, I really appreciate your help during the run. ☺️☺️
Is there anyone who's attempted a "unlock all custom special moves" speedrun for Smash 4? That was an interesting idea for a game mechanic that was stunted by lack of balance and the ridiculous time-sink.
That sounds HORRENDOUS.
@7:09 "I am serious...and don't call me Shirley."
45:46 gotta give it to amsa for being real lmao
Hahaha fr
My cousin and I did this a few years ago in a weekend.
We got the 5000 KOs by setting a CPU Roy on level 9, and set our three characters to characters that drop quickly and have max launch distance in the settings.
All we had to do was set the timer to infinite, then go to sleep. In the morning we had score display
Wow, so quitting out of a match still counted all of those KOs?
@@davidvkimball I thought it did, but now googling I might be misremembering. Either way, a 99 minute match definitely got us a big chunk of those 5000
Project Ganondorf documentary when?
Soon!!
Sometimes you gotta risk it for the biscuit. Congrats on the sub 19 and thanks for the entertaining video
Thanks!! So glad you enjoyed it!
What a very kind thing to say. Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy the rest of my videos.
Phenomenal editing man. Really small stuff makes this video special imo.
Thank you!
Thanks for the heads up! I'm not sure I'd cover that, but it's good to know!
That was an incredible journey you took us on during this video. Very well made and well done on your run!
Thank you very much!
Yo this editing is so top tier 😭, thank you for using my music!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you agreed to let me use it! It was perfect for this doc.
Your channel is going to blow up, I just know it. Excellent video
Thank you so much!! I really hope so!
I’ve kinda wanted to get into TASing so maybe this is the thing to do. It would be a terrible idea for a first TAS.
LMAO yeah that would be a rough one to start with. That being said if you end up doing it hit me up. 👀
Great job on this man.
Also, Lonnie Liston Smith - Garden of Peace! was not expecting to hear that. One of my favorite songs ♥
Thank you!! Wow, thank you for naming the song. The one I included was a remix, I didn't know.
100% Aka all trophies, should definitely have all glitches and bugs allowed
I agree!
this has gotta be hands down my favourite endurance run I've seen, thanks for the break down.
Somebody send this to MoistCritikal please
That's an amazing idea!!
@@davidvkimball I think he would love this video, I know how much he appreciates Smash Bros + Speed Running. So if you could find a way to send this to him I bet it would be a hit on stream.
@@DoctorSour Dude, thank you! I'll try to reach out to him!
@@davidvkimball same here, I’ll be recommending this next time he does TH-cam night

wow
that was amazing
i was just watching it casually
and the ending of your run where you just went frick it and it paid off for the sub 19 was amazing
Thank you so much!! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
Your voice and narration style reminds me of the How It's Made series (I mean for this to be positive)
Oh thank you! I'm not familiar with that I'll have to look it up.
Absolutely insane. Congrats on the record, and thank you for the amazing video!
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
OMG I really wanted to hear about this,I'm glad you did a video about this, cause that was always so much fun to me,collecting the trophies and learning about nintendo's past
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
It's wierd hearing Dual Screen's music in the background. His music is so underrated with many of his best songs under a thousand views! It's cool that you included his music in this documentary.
His music is amazing. I stumbled upon it somehow and when I heard this album I knew I had to include it. I reached out and he was super enthusiastic about using it and even made some edits for me. Amazing guy.
61 hours? Holy shit lol, the first attempt didn't go that well, this guy had patience. At least the mistakes in other runs helped you to improve time lol.
Hahaha. Yeah that first one was bonkers.
Great vid - congrats on thrashing the record!
Insane category and your section at the end was amazing! I have to wonder what a TAS of All Trophies would look like.
Thank you! Yeah that's kind of being looked at right now haha.
Such a dope video and story!! Congrats on sub 19 and the WR!!
Thank you so much!
This video is really amazing! Its awesome seeing someone passionate about something like this...
Thank you!!
