- FIRST DRIVE: The Mk8 Golf R is here and VW has made some major changes for the 2022 model year. The Gold R is meant to compete with the Honda Civic Type R, Subaru WRX STI, Elantra N & Veloster N. On the outside your will find full LED lighting, 19in wheels, bigger brakes, and quad-tip exhaust. On the outside there is a 10in infotainment system, 10in digital gauge display, and all new seats. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that now produces 315HP & is mated to either a 7-speed DCT or 6-speed manual. Is the 2022 VW Golf R a BETTER performance car than a Type R or WRX STI?

Great review Raiti. This is a car that will be faster then most exotics and sports cars on a tight winding road (not a race track) in the hands of most regular drivers. It just grips and goes, will not spin and get you in a ditch. Also, the old understeer is purged. AWD, family friendly, refinement, good price, good looks, crazy resale. Macan GTS performance for half the cost. What's not to like other than the infotainment.
Lori and Joe, thank you for another amazing video of a smaller performance car. It’s great that these cars are still available with turbo gasoline engines in this era of SUVs and upcoming electrification on a wider scale. Lori, as always, thanks for the awesome camera work and angles.
Sounds like VW absolutely nailed moving the driving capabilities forward. Unfortunately the interior does not appear to be a resounding improvement. Holding out hope for future updates to correct these initial problems people are having.
I remember when the mk8 was released I didn’t really like the new headlight style but now I’ve gotten used to it I think they judged it beautifully, it looks exceptionally good on the R.

I personally like the 2018 plus STI with those acid-green brembo calipers. Something that Volkswagen still refuses to give us. But the white, with those Wheels, and that gloss black diffuser sort of wrapping around the top part of the quad exhausts (kind of like on the AMG a45s). I think it looks fantastic! Coming from a Mark 7 Golf R in lapis blue, and spending a fortune on cosmetic and performance mods... This car looks perfect as is IMO. Maybe a black roof wrap if the sunroof is of no importance to you. But almost 50K us out the door? A lot more than my mk7 was but you don't got to spend a penny on any mods, at least I think it's perfect as is. Does anyone know if this car or any US cars come with the akrapovic exhaust or is it just an option overseas? I know the US car has an active adjustable exhaust which wasn't mentioned in the review, I'm just wondering if the active exhaust we get is akrapovic or not, or even an option? Overall I think it looks perfect, except that heated steering wheel touch button right on the edge of the steering wheel. I've heard it many times that it gets in the way and gets turned on by accident, as well as other steering wheel icons get accidentally pushed.
Such a shame being one of the nicest steering wheels out there.
I love the design however the 7.5 version is just as beautifull if not more. Its just the cheap interior and lack of real buttons which I dont like

Good choice. It's the same one I plan on getting, too. I'm in my mid 30's. So the "boy racer" look of the STi and Type R don't really fit my personality/lifestyle. As great of cars as they are, The Golf just appeals to me more. Plus I live in the PNW where there are more windy mountain roads than I know what to do with, and this car just looks like it's going to be a blast to drive out here.

Joe we are old school guys I actually owned the 1985 Supra/celica I now have a 2021 STI but I loved the 1994 Volkswagen Corrado this one kind of brings back that feeling but not quite .. no manual .. Great Video

Hi Joe, nice review! For the performance numbers it’s more like 315hp and 295tq for DSG and 280tq for manual and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds!
These are the figures that VW publishes, which are notoriously under-reported. This car actually dynos at about 340/340 at the crank, so makes approximately the published crank figures AT THE WHEELS. Also, numerous publications have gotten 3.9-4.0 seconds to 60. I own one and it's definitely faster than advertised by VW.

I LOVE my Mk8 R. It’s a F___ing blast to drive. I cannot wait until tunes finally come out. It’s going to be a low 11’s car for sure on basically stock everything.

How is your first month experience so far? anything stands out?
Zonks for me are the lack of buttons and knobs. The shifter. I'd much prefer a regular DSG shifter instead of that whatever the eff that thing is. Too much gloss black around the screens. Looks cheap and will scratch and glare. Definitely should have made the roof all black. That looks silly to me the way it is there. I prefer the auto but due to that auto shifter I'd have to get the manual. Then get an overlay kit for all that gloss black. Another great video. Your hands down the best on YT brother. Definitely like this car in white.
Been waiting a long time for this! Not as long as my wait for delivery though. Still at least 3-4 more months 😭

Hi, I just got my new Golf R for my daily drive. It is amazing but I would like to highlight a feedback from an owner perspective. The Sport mode is very nice but the steering heavy and the hard suspension is really not the best for every day. Unfortunately the car does not allow me to set a default drive mode or remember my last drive mode choice. I could not see anybody realizing that! I hope VW release a software update! Thank you
I'm with you on the default drive mode. It is a little annoying that I have to select my custom drive mode every time I start the car but, the whole car and driving experience is way worth it. I really like my R a lot.

How is the infotainment? Currently have a new JLR Pivi system that is amazing but the vehicle driving is not as inspiring.

So jealous, this car looks so cool/fun.
Really hoped you woulda clicked custom. so we could see how the screen so we could see all the items that are adjustable and how that screens set up compared to Hyundai's N cars. You were right there and that custom screen is one of the most important features of this car yet you skipped right over it. It would be nice to know which items are adjustable. My mk7 Golf r had adjustability for the engine, DCT, steering, Danpers, and headlights. I know the mk8 has more options, just wish you could have clicked it and shown us what additions have been added to adjust from the Mark 7 to the mark 8 Golf r. Might have taken 4-5 seconds for us to see the layout and the additional adjustable features. You did the exact same thing when you reviewed the Veloster n. Skipped right over the eight different items that can be adjusted, which is what makes that car different than a regular Veloster. I really enjoy your channel but many new high-performance cars today are coming out with a comfort, normal, sports modes but the custom mode screen is by far the most important. Showcasing to the customer if they have or don't have adaptive dampers, or active exhaust, or adjustable e-lsd etc. Now we have no idea what items are customizable on the Golf R yet we do know that there is some space in the middle to put our twizzlers. I think clicking on the custom button and simply showing the viewers that screen would have been just as quick if not quicker than your review of the little twizzlers storage compartment. Now myself or other viewers will have to go to another mk8 Golf r review to get a look at that ever so important custom screen and what is available on it.
Your reviews are great other than that one massive flaw. Especially since most new performance cars have those adjustable custom screens where you can leave everything in sport and put your dampers in comfort. And I should mention that you are one of the first to have a review of an mk8 golf R that can actually be turned on and actually driven. Yet you kept it in nurburgring mofe the whole time. You gave it the beans in three different situations which is great... However I can't understand how you kept on mentioning "YOU'VE GOT COMFORT, YOU'VE GOT SPORT, AND YOU'VE GOT NURBURGRING!!!"
At no point did you mention throughout almost 30 minutes that's the exhaust is active and can be adjusted. Never mentioned that you can adjust stiffness of the suspension or the weight of the steering. You kept on mentioning the word drift mode, and didn't even pull the screen up in the infotainment along with the custom screen. Every Auto journalist reviewing a high-performance modern car like this that has a lot of customization options from everything being in full race mode, to full comfort mode.... When driving the car they will show both sides. Meaning they will put it in its most aggressive mode and discuss how it feels, and then put it in its most quiet and comfortable setting and discuss the differences (like how the steering might be too heavy in its most aggressive setting, or the dampers might be even too soft in comfort mode).
They will make comparisons this car's adjustability compared to one of its rivals.
For example, 1 Channel was reviewing the Elantra N and stated that there is a huge difference between having the dampers in sport and having them in comfort. Stating that you can feel a major difference when changing the suspension settings as opposed to the Type R which doesn't feel very different whether the suspension is in comfort or its most aggressive setting. All this can be settled within 30 seconds while driving. It needs to be said. All you're doing is giving this car flowers for this whole review and you keep talking about the dual clutches helping switch power between both wheels in the front and in the back. That's actually the electronically-controlled limited-slip differential that's doing that, which you didn't even mention, and secondly, the car doesn't have torque vectoring LSD between the front wheels.
So stating that the power can go from left to right wheels in the front and the back is completely false.
You're probably thinking, if I know so much about this why don't I go out and become an auto journalist instead of complaining to you. I personally think you should use this as constructive criticism, because you did not review the vehicles performance. And especially not the new functionalities it has. And it's not like you only had 10 minutes. This was a 25-minute review... In fact you probably spent a total of a whole 2 minutes discussing the golf R logos when it would have taken much less time to quickly go through different items that can be adjusted in the custom screen.
And it would have taken 4-5 s to just click the custom icon so we could at least see the screen and what's available to be adjusted without even you having to say a word.
I honestly believe that this car became available on-the-fly for you to review, and you really we're not familiar or ready to give it a proper review and simply pointed out the obvious aesthetic differences that anyone could see with their own two eyes, but just like with the Veloster n video, when it came to the points that made the car special, you didn't even know they existed and skipped right over them just like you did in this review.
By the way I absolutely love that exact mk8 golf r in white with those Wheels. Absolutely stunning! Good luck
I do like these, I want to ad it to my dad car list as my Camaro probably isn't going to work well with kid 2 on the way. I can't help but wish the accents were red on the R and not the GTI. You missed a major zonk, other reviews have said those buttons directly under the 10" screen are not back lit at night. What you said about the steering wheel heater haptic button I've also heard about the drive mode selector. Like you start a lap at a track day in one mode and unknowingly finish in another. I have to think they are going to make changes on a mid cycle change because everyone seems to not like this about the mark 8s

Sure, it's fast in the straight line just like the Tesla Model S Plaid is fast in a straight line. I reckon the Civic Type R or WRX STI is faster on a race track.
Subaru WRX STI is my all around favorite for sure !!never have liked the Honda Civic type R it’s fantastic as a corner carver just not my thing ,but I can appreciate it for those that do ….everyone has there own cup of tea they like 👍🏻

Now I think the "new" Volkswagen Golf R is a good looking "clean" hot hatchback, I actually think it's a good looking hatchback.
But my only problem is that now it looks like every new Volkswagen being sold and that's not a bad thing. So that means that it's more uniform with the Volkswagen line up.
Anyway I'm a fan of the "new" Volkswagen Golf R, just hate the "piano black" trim because it just make the interior look more cheaper, but it have a fully digital gauge cluster. I'm also a big fan of the blue trim/accents, because it reminds me of BMW.
Anyway what is your favorite hatchback the "new" Volkswagen Golf or the competitors like the:
Mazda 3 hatchback, Volkswagen Golf, Honda Civic hatchback, Honda Civic Type R, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Veloster, Golf R, Hyundai Veloster N, Abarth 500, Toyota Prius, Volkswagen GTI, Kia Rio hatchback or ect.
Or mabey a sportback like the Audi A5 sportback, BMW 4 series, Mercedes CLA or ect. ..
(Also the window frame remind me of Mercedes)
I had a e92 and I loved everything on that car. Been wanting a new hothatch. Idk if I should go for this one. Everything looks great but there's no car for test drive in my city..

Ya ya. The haptic buttons aren't the most intuitive. But I sat in one of these. And i can tell you it feels like you're in something special. I'm 6'2, 275lbs. And I was extremely comfortable. Low to the ground. Looks great. Sounds great. I'm sure they'll fix the infotainment for the mk 8.5. But it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if I had to pick this version up now.

Golf R, Type R or STI? Golf R, all day long. I could see if you were in your 20’s the others may have appeal. But anyone 30 and older that has any dignity… is gonna go Golf R all day long. It’s the fastest, has the best interior and looks the best as a super handsome car. I don’t see any debate here. The Golf R is more $ so if money is tight than ok… if not, Golf R, no contest

Don't like VW group, but this thing is so practical. Snows alot up north...need space to haul mountain bikes, I look funny being over 40 in an automatic civic( plus it's slow 🐌)

As much as I love VW, and the new exterior styling of this generation, I prefer the interior of the previous generation with the mix of tech and traditional analog gauges and buttons.

I’ve never been a fan of sport compacts or hot hatches that are overstyled. This Golf R hit the mark. It’s subtle but aggressive. The Germans are great at that

The R def looks better to me sans the GTI's whaky hexagonal fog lights. I had a Mk7 and a Mk7.5; was trying to get an Mk8 but that dashboard is a hard stop unfortunately. I got rid of the Mk7.5 because the electronics would fritz out in relatively hot and cold weather. I've had 5 VW's; I can't deal with electric gremlins anymore than I need to and the capacitive dash will problem sizzle out in the Texas heat.
Nothing like a Toyota that's for sure

Honda's have never been a factory 0-60 or quarter mile kind of car, they have only shined in their cornering ability, especially the Type R.
Not sure why but the STI has really lost its advantage of their symmetrical AWD they were so well know for back in the 90's and 00's. But I will say they are still the king of rally racing.

The digital display cluster has a very similar design to the 2021/22 Elantra with the Convenience package. The way the infotainment screen is on the right side and the buttons on the left side. They both are gloss black too. Except this car actually has buttons and functionality of the that left side than the Elantra.

The great thing about the Golf R in Europe is that you can have it as an estate variant, and that is really nice. Australia will also get this soon.
And please note that the 6-speed manual is not available in Europe, only in North America.

No Fog Light but there is Fog light in the GTI but they are tiny if any!
