When should the wet clutch be replaced and how is the quality holding up? I have a 2014 WRX and am interested in the Golf R MK 8 when it comes out. I bought my WRX with 23 miles on it and replaced the dry clutch at 84,000 miles.
I've got a 2018 R with stick shift and i can confirm....it is awesome in every way. Traction off the line is very impressive, as is the assured feeling the car gives you in the high speed bends. Best all rounder of the hot hatchbacks....practical,good looking, quality feel, fast and great handling. It's got everything including a top quality infotainment system. Great video Raiti!
Shame what's happened with them since then. You have the last good model, aside from the mk7.5 2019 shown in this video. The new ones have so many problems.
Absolutely in love Joe I would definitely buy a 2019 VW Golf R and even a GTI Golf. This is what I love to see and what others love to see. Thanks Joe.
Shop around and snag a lingering high trim GTI. I got an Autobahn brand new on the dealership lot with 300 miles, fully loaded for just over $31,000 because it was a 2018 model. The only difference is this new transmission (that was actually a selling point for the 2018 as I didn't want to deal with newer technology in my daily driver. And in the last couple months information about stalling issues are becoming well-known on the 2019)
This is my dream daily driver. $40,000 is a serious chunk of change but this is a lot of car for the money. Being a hatchback helps with the practicality too. Like they say, hatchbacks are minivans for poor people! Great review as always Joe!
I definitely wouldn’t say the hatch Back or hot hatch is the poor man’s minivan it’s more of the poor man’s Porsche with a lift gate for people who don’t want to or aren’t ready to own an SUV
Thank you for cheering me up with the video. Having a bad day, came out of costco earlier today and somebody hit and scrapped my brand new 2019 m5. Just bought it 2 days ago.
Json07 Sucks m8. Happened to me before, took my new Mini to the beach and 18hours later I had a small dent with a scratch on the rear fender. Since then I invested in PPF and ceramic coating to reduce the effect of future damage.
model year, it is being put on hiatus. Along with the Golf Alltrack and Sportwagen models, the Golf R will not be making an appearance in the 2020 VW lineup. However, it’s fairly certain that the Golf R will return with the Mk 8 iteration of the Volkswagen Golf family (we are currently in the Mk 7 generation). Based on past patterns and calculations, the Volkswagen Golf R is likely to return in an all-new incarnation by the end of 2022.
Just bought my Golf R 13 days ago. White on black and it is totally awesome! Cannot wait to make this bad boy Stage 2 APR! The Golf R will be back for 2021.
the best option for anyone trying to get into one of these but can't quite afford it new. Lease takeovers are an alternate option, I know a person who found a 19' R manual and the original owner put down 12,000 cash and later decided he wanted out of the lease. The second owner took the lease over with significantly lower payments.
So the fact that it’s the same size engine, but being pushed harder, would you say that decreases the life of the car? I’m looking for a super fun reliable daily I can drive for years
bought one just like this last August and loved it every day since!! Such an underrated car, it is the best all around hot hatch on the market today imo #savethemanuals
While not in the rear seats, I did see a 12v plug in the hatch area right behind the right passenger seat. Easy to plug something in right there for the rear passengers.
6 speed is cheaper option to buy own and maintain But it's really nice having the DSG for best of both worlds... just more expensive but worth it to most
Joe, as others have noted, the R is not being discontinued. It's not unusual for VW to skip a model year when a new generation of the "R" and the GTI are introduced. They did the same thing when the MK6 was replaced with the MK7. There was no "2014" model of the GTI or the "R" until the 2015 model was available on the MQB platform. The real question is the decisions VW will make about exporting the MK8 GTI and Golf R to the US. In 2018 VW initially limited the number of R's allocated to US dealers to the number of pre-orders (with deposits) from each dealer. That led to a severe under-supply of R's in the US. When I was shopping a year ago there were only 3 Golf R's on dealer lots within 500 miles of Seattle. GTI's, on the other hand were relatively plentiful. Currently, that situation is reversed. There are very few Autobahn GTI's available in the Pacific Northwest while R's are relatively plentiful. This may be the result of VW's decision to allocate more "R's" to the US in the face of uncertainty about US tariff policies. The real danger is that VW will opt to limit or completely curtail exports of the MK8 GTI's and R's to the US if the tariff policies of the current administration significantly increase their prices. American consumers already resist paying prices for those vehicles compared to Europeans. (A top trim GTI in Germany sells for more than $50,000 at current exchange rates. That is why top trim GTI's in the US have significantly fewer features than their European counterparts.) If the numbskull trade policies of the Trump administration drive the price of GTI's and "R's" even higher, VW may opt to allocate the MK8 versions to other countries.
Get one now! VW is ending the 6 year, 72,000 mile bumper2bumper warranty at the end of the year!!!! The 2019 Golf R is a steal of a deal. The USA only got 6,000 mk7.5 R's in total. So it is the rarest one yet.
A lesson he has learned so law enforcement can’t look back at the videos and prosecute him. Or maybe because he has a speed limit agreement with the dealership;)
As a MK7 GTI owner with an IS38, I would appreciate the R more if the R had a bigger displaced engine than its little brother the GTI. I don't want to spend the money for an R to have the same engine feel as I can get in my GTI. If the R came with a 2.5 or 3.0L engine, it would be worth it, but as it sits right now, you can make the GTI have the same engine feel for a lot less money.
@5:49 reportedly, the production line has closed down on the R already, so dealer and pipeline stock is all that is left. Love that blue. That $40k+ price point, though... The "IPS" (In Plane Switching) infotainment screen in the GTI SE, Autobahn and Golf R is super nice and brings the viewing quality up to really good PC screens and smart phones. I don't understand why the R has an electronic e-brake rather than the mechanical lever that's equipped in the GTI. Odd. I also wonder about the long term viability of the instrument screen. Time will tell on those units. @10:05 "water" in that truck cooler. :D
I purchased one being told “ we are not building any for seven more years”... less than a year after I purchased it, there was a newer one at the same dealership... do t believe them. The car was so fast and amazing, I would own one again... fastest car ( APR 3 tune set up 450hp) I have ever had! Wow! ... but don’t believe vw “ we are not making them again” they will lie in a heartbeat!
Raiti's Rides thanks man! I just like adding what I know. I love your vids, just found them... but your like me, you know odd data and like telling people so they know! You really have some great knowledge and perspective... better than any other channel I have ever seen. I’m sick of the typical review stuff... Hope your channel does awesome!
I hadn’t heard til watching this video VW was discontinuing the R. Too bad. Hopefully the bring it back with the Mark 8. I’ve thought for a few years the R was the nicer, faster, but more subdued style GTI, with AWD.
I’ve been obsessed with a Golf R with black wheels after I drove it a month ago. The problem is they’re so expensive and they aren’t a quality vehicle. VW is #18 brand on Consumer Report’s most reliable brand listing. I always buy Japanese cars so I don’t have any quality issues. Still, I can’t get the Golf R out of my head. I’ve literally woken up at night wanting one but worrying I’d buy it and it would be a piece of garage.
Its a great car, but is it worth the major price bump from the Gti? Dealers absolutely refuse to lower the price when negotiating... also Gti looks more agressive for whatever reason.
Been looking at 2019 Rs for sale over the past week The most egregious example is Carmax wants $47k for one that has 6k miles. No way am I paying more for a used car than the original MSRP. Looks like a GTI is in my future.
Listen Joe you trade your rs for type ra are you happy with this trade you had type r before that you trade for rs if you would go back to start which car would you buy ? I have golf r 2015 with dsg but i was thinking to trade for sti 2020 or type r what you think about this or get challenger wude body which is your favorite car now
Daniel Kershner hey Daniel, not sure what you asked but did you see his Legacy review from the NY auto Show in April?? As soon as these hit dealer floors you can count on a Raiti’s Rides review!
I got the mk7.5 GTI SE trim with the leather. IMHO the sweet spot for the “Golf hot hatch” line up. Enough refinement, performance and sportiness oh and I think all the red accents make the GTI a more “playful” and fun car as a hot hatch! Loving the all LED package on these late model Golfs!
The golf needs more power to justify the price premium over the gti. Ive driven both and there really doesny feel like there's a very noticeable difference past the awd hookup. Seen people with lightly modded gtis walk R's
I like the Golf R but always felt it should have more power to take advantage of the AWD system, I mean 288 hp, come on, the GTI can have that with a tune, intake and exhaust...if not more. As far as the car going away, like everyone said, it's coming back and since I'm not a VW guru I believe the original, the R32, took some time off only to come back as the R model, who knows, maybe it will have a unique name change once again.
Don't trust the numbers on paper. it's under rated. they make about 320 to the crank unless you're in a really hot climate. I own a 16 R (dsg) and ran a 12.80 @ 106 stock. its absolutely rapid stock. Now I'm on Uni 1+ map. It's unreal and another beast all together (sleeper)
@@Reptil33 that's very impressive stock! My 87' GN with full bolt ons, back in 1999, ran a best of 12.6@109 mph w/120K on it, tired valve springs and trans but still, the R is pretty fast stock, surely runs below 12.5 now!
They aren’t discontinuing they aren’t making a 2020 one. It’s because they are switching to MK8. I am hoping that the new gen has at least a 2.5L I4 and even a stronger turbo. Let’s hope it pushes to 300HP.
Like other's say..its not being discontinued..just a break in 2020 as the golf 8 filters in ... And those rims are hideous..the left side spokes are opposite the right side ..the black Pretorias solve that tho..
No idea where you're getting your (mis)information from, but speaking about the mk8, I quote, "In an interview with AutoExpress, VW’s Sales and Marketing Boss, Jurgen Stackmann, said, “The R brand is going extreme. The role of R is that it can go beyond the rational; nobody needs a compact car with 400bhp, but is there a place [for it?]. Certainly, and that’s the turf of R.”. That's not the words of a company who are planning to discontinue it !!!
The thing I don't understand is the space on the inside. Every single review says the room in the back for passengers is great, but its not. Unless you sit disgustingly close to the steering wheel. I am only 5'9'' and there is no physical way someone can sit comfortably behind me. When my wife drives she sits with the seat all the way back and there is at max 2'' of space.
You guys must be sitting with the seat farther back than usual/not sitting in the proper position. I’m 6’0” and I can sit in the seat behind mine with about 2”-3” of knee room left.
I have been eyeing up the R for so long. I am seeing them used with around 15k on autotempest.com for 35k... Don't know why I havn't bit the bullet yet. I have been driving standard since I was 16 but I might make the change to automatic for the launch control. I'm also kinda tired of shifting in traffic but at the same time when I'm ripping back roads having that control feels so damn good. Really enjoyed watching you pin it in second gear through those bends. SOUNDS AMAZINGGG!
Just bought mine tonight! Found it in Spektrum color Prussian Blue Metallic and took it home! Today was a great day!
Congrats Mike! You are going to love it!

That sounds like a good plan!
Get the Cupra Leon 300 instead, lighter and faster.
Hopefully the owners will have kept them stock and not made some boy racer mods like slams or big body kits
Not this year, until the chip shortage is fixed. The price of used car is still expensive.
Looks like Mk7.5s are going used at brand new price because of the market and the MK8 looks worse lol.

Zak M of course man! I am so glad you are loving it!
3rd I think lol , great review again , I do know you reviewed a jeep gladiator sport , but did you do the Rubicon?
Gabriel Scarretta thanks man! I did the Rubicon at the NY Auto Show.
@@RaitisRides ok ! Thank you !
No problem
Excellent review.
Thanks for letting me share it with you Paul!
@@RaitisRides you still have your Shelby?
I hadn’t heard til watching this video VW was discontinuing the R. Too bad. Hopefully the bring it back with the Mark 8. I’ve thought for a few years the R was the nicer, faster, but more subdued style GTI, with AWD.
Fingers crossed!
The Golf R was discontinued just for 2020. It is expected to return when the new generation (MK8) debuts in 2021.
They discontinued the beetle which was disappointing.
So very true!
Been waiting so long for Joe’s review on this!!
I hope it was worth the wait Ricky!
Raiti, I have much respect for your choice in transmission. If sacrifice mild performance for actually doing the shifting with a 3rd peddle.
Thanks! I totally feel the same way!
I appreciate you sharing your input and perspective! Thank you for watching!
@@hughsnow830 I say Gti is a much better value, most people won't ever drive the R to the limits anyway.
Listen Joe you trade your rs for type ra are you happy with this trade you had type r before that you trade for rs if you would go back to start which car would you buy ? I have golf r 2015 with dsg but i was thinking to trade for sti 2020 or type r what you think about this or get challenger wude body which is your favorite car now
I actually love the Type RA.
Hey joe any news on the legacy review I asked you about?
Daniel Kershner hey Daniel, not sure what you asked but did you see his Legacy review from the NY auto Show in April?? As soon as these hit dealer floors you can count on a Raiti’s Rides review!
Hi Daniel! We are still waiting for them to hit the dealerships.
Thanks for helping out!
Thanks for sharing your great input and perspective!
Nice review, but maybe do a test drive somewhere besides a residential neighborhood and really air it out.
The golf needs more power to justify the price premium over the gti. Ive driven both and there really doesny feel like there's a very noticeable difference past the awd hookup. Seen people with lightly modded gtis walk R's
I can totally see where you are coming from!
I was talking with somebody from the dealer. I hope I get the 2019 golf r they have. Wish me luck.
Fingers crossed Chrsitopher!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one!
My 87' GN with full bolt ons, back in 1999, ran a best of 12.6@109 mph w/120K on it, tired valve springs and trans but still, the R is pretty fast stock, surely runs below 12.5 now!
sry Joe, just found your Golf R vid. thanks!
I guess better late than never! Thanks for watching!
I love the Golf R. They better bring it back!!! Great review as always!
I can see you driving one of these!
why is the speed covered by the logo?
I have to cover my bases.
This color is almost as great as the RA almost
I totally agree with you!
How come you block out what speed you are doing at the end ?
200 mph 😂
Prying eyes!
Warp Speed!
With the new disappointment of the new wrx, I wouldn’t mind trading my my wrx for a golf r
I totally agree with you Brendan!
Does it come with the OEM engine light and SRS warning????
I see what you did there! ;-)
They aren’t discontinuing they aren’t making a 2020 one. It’s because they are switching to MK8. I am hoping that the new gen has at least a 2.5L I4 and even a stronger turbo. Let’s hope it pushes to 300HP.
Thanks for the info.
I’ll hopefully pick up one of theses or an sti next April
You can't go wrong with either one.
Like other's say..its not being discontinued..just a break in 2020 as the golf 8 filters in ...
And those rims are hideous..the left side spokes are opposite the right side ..the black Pretorias solve that tho..
Thanks for you input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Another great video!!!
Thanks for letting me share it with you!
New tshirt ideas... TURN UP THE WICK and a shirt with a bunch of buttons on the front, Raiti’s Ride logo and a hand about to push it 👆🏽
I love those ideas! Stay tuned! ;-)
I appreciate you sharing your input and perspective! Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing those thoughts!
You guys must be sitting with the seat farther back than usual/not sitting in the proper position. I’m 6’0” and I can sit in the seat behind mine with about 2”-3” of knee room left.
Such a little sleeper I love it!
You are so very right!
Very nice video, very much informative.
Debating on buying a 2019 golf r or keeping my 2019 wrx
Oxuzi you think the golf r is faster? Stock vs stock
Carlos Suarez yeah lol
Carlos Suarez wrx are pos
In the process of getting rid of my 2017 wrx for one
Joe vehicle is not broken in and probably 87 octane in the tank
There is 93 in it.
Why less HP than the 18?
EPA
I have been eyeing up the R for so long. I am seeing them used with around 15k on autotempest.com for 35k... Don't know why I havn't bit the bullet yet. I have been driving standard since I was 16 but I might make the change to automatic for the launch control. I'm also kinda tired of shifting in traffic but at the same time when I'm ripping back roads having that control feels so damn good. Really enjoyed watching you pin it in second gear through those bends. SOUNDS AMAZINGGG!
I am so glad that I could share this one with you!
