Best wheel for GT7? - Fanatec DD Pro vs Thrustmaster T-GT2

  • After looking around for months I couldn't find any comparison videos between these two sets. Thrustmaster's current belt-driven flagship wheel is competing directly with Fanatec's new CSL DD in terms of price, but does it feel like the same price on a rig? With Gran Turismo 7 coming out in a few weeks, is the (now) officially licensed Fanatec wheel better than its true competitor?
    As to keep this video relevant i only used the 8 Nm Boost kit for the CSL DD Pro, as without it it has less torque than the T-GT and would put it below the competing price. With the boost kit, you get more torque, more fidelity and responsiveness in the FFB for around the same price.
    I would appreciate any feedback you may have, or any other comparison videos you may want for the future!

    I appreciate your honest comparison, I really wanted to see something like this. I had to go for the T GT II because I already had the H pattern shifter for it and I mainly drive vehicles with clutch and h pattern shifters, so to match that on the Fanatec I would have ended spending 500 dollars more between shifter and upgraded pedals. In addition, I have had bad experiences with Fanatec products in the past. Nevertheless, it was a painful decision, it does bother me because it seems that the dd is definitely a superior product, but at this point in time the thrustmaster was the right one for my budget. But I completely agree, the T GT II is overpriced and it should be in the 500-600 dollar range.

    • @afons
      @afons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I know it wont help you now but for anybody else in the future in this situation you can get a drivehub adapter if your on console so you can mix&match fanatec/thrustmaster/logitech wheels, pedals and shifters. If your on pc then all you need is usb adapter. The Drivehub adapter is about 90usd which isn't bad if you already have invested a lot into one eco system vs starting from scratch.
      I'm using one with my ps4 to run my thrustmaster t300, thrustmaster T-LCM pedals with a fanatec 1.5SQ shifter. Obviously I could have saved almost 150 had I got the thrustmaster th8 shifter but a good H shifter was important to me and the fanatec is about the best you can get in the sub 300 range. It would of cost me 200ish for thrustmaster shifter, ended up costing me 280 for fanatec shifter with usb adapter plus another 90 for the drivehub.
      I will upgrade to a dd wheel and heusinkveld sprint pedals at some point soon but I'm pretty satisfied with my current set up for now. Wish the pedals had more feel in the clutch and throttle but the loadcell brake is great for now and I think I can modify the clutch to feel more real and natural instead of the numb, linear feel. I'm going to add some bass shakers for gear changes, basic suspension/tire feedback and engine revs as well plus a couple small ones to mount directly to the shifter for grinding and what not and one directly to the brake pedal for abs effects, more finer details.
      I know with the transducers you have to prioritize what you want to feel or your just going to feel a big mess of vibrations and it will be like your on a big ol'e vibrator instead of driving a race car lol. I can't wait to get a motion platform. Dof reality h3/p3 looks great for the money.
      There is also the Yaw vr and yaw2 for less than 2 grand. They don't look the best for sim racing, but for just about everything else it looks like they would be pretty cool. You could actually own both a yaw vr and 3dof dof reality motion rig for under 5 grand. Lol not that it's super cheap I know but when you think about the capabilities of what they can do it's pretty neat.

    Never used a wheel before, but after finishing all the Cafe "Menus" in GT7 I decided to get one, grabbed a Logitech G29 in a sale, I know it's not as flash as some of the more expensive ones, but for a first wheel it's excellent, responsive and my lap times have dropped, well worth a look if you're a first timer, like I was. :-)

      Huge congrats on the g29! It’s an awesome little thing if you are just getting started. The level of immersion you get compared to pad is next level. I’m glad you are enjoying it. I call the g29 the “gateway wheel” as its good enough to captivate you, and there’s so much room for improvement that you don’t know exists (or even know you need) that it leads to more purchases. Very useful video, I like the thing that you take it easy and simple. But unfortunately, Fanatec is going to raise the price of their products starting today maybe including GT DD Pro. I'm not sure if guys at Fnatec have understood that their prices are low or what... but it's so clear that you and reviews like your are very effective in this matter and play a major role. I'm not pointing at you as a culprit. But I think that you and youtubers like you are really playing a major role. So instead of that Trustmaster lower the price, but Fanactec raised it. Great video dude. In the UK, we have the added wonder of Brexit, meaning Fanatec shipping to the UK adds additional VAT (I'm guessing 20%) meaning TGT2 bundle = £600, DD Pro bundle a whopping £855!

    • @Jayjayuk12345
      @Jayjayuk12345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uhh, this makes no difference to how much VAT you pay.
      You only pay EU VAT for items shipped within the EU.
      When we were in the EU you would pay the tax to Fanatec direct, (same amount 20%) under the EU-UK VAT agreement and it's included in the final price... typically now when you purchase something from the EU to the UK since Brexit the VAT is usually removed at point of sale, and you instead pay UK VAT at customs. It works out the same 20%. If Fanatec are charging uk VAT at point of sale, then they must have a company based in the UK registered for VAT either way you don't pay it twice! you may however need to pay import fees. This is a different thing though.
      Likewise you do not charge UK VAT if goods are exported from: Great Britain to a destination outside the UK

    • @Johnnyjawbone
      @Johnnyjawbone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jayjayuk12345 So in simple terms the customs fee on top of the regular 20% VAT then. I don't know how much the customs import fee will be. I'm guessing it won't be pennies.
      There is the added complication of UPS then creating an account and charging you this invoice for the customs fee. It's basically a massive pain in the ass.

    • @Jayjayuk12345
      @Jayjayuk12345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Johnnyjawbone I edited my post a few times to try to explain that a bit better.
      Yeah, seems UPS will pay the VAT on your behalf and collect it from you as well as the charges for that service. Should be be able to find out how much that is though.
      To test, I just added something to my basket at Fanatec, and at checkout it removed the 20% EU VAT from the total price once i chose UK as delivery address.
      I don't think you need to open a UPS account though, Fanatec state UPS are their delivery partners. They will ask for payment of the 20% Vat + Fees on delivery i guess.

    I have the GT DD Pro and have to say that the GT wheel is very underwhelming. Rubber instead of leather, the paddles feel like a toy, the d-pad is terrible, it feels cheap and nasty and is quite loud as you showed in your video. I also have the Podium series Porsche 911 GT3 R which cost me $1000 AUD and even the buttons on that feel cheap, nasty and loud. Only the paddles feel nice.
    In comparison the Thrustmaster Ferrari 599xx wheel I’ve had for several years, the buttons feel nice, a feel of quality and are quiet. The Alcantara still holds up after all these years. It’s just disappointing when spending so much money. Not to mention I always seem to be troubleshooting something with Fanatec. My GT DD Pro has issues which I’ve learned are quite common and I will likely have to have it replaced and hope for the best that the next one will be ok, basically like a lottery that you’ll either get a good one, or you’ll get a dud. Luckily my CSL DD is ok but honestly I’m seriously considering going back to Thrustmaster and saying goodbye to Fanatec.
    I hope those who are purchasing a GT DD Pro for GT7 will be happy with their purchase and hope they won’t run into any issues or the typical Fanatec problems, especially if they’re a first timer into sim racing wheels.

      The Mac thing is quite the annoyance, and TM will have the "Plug and play" much more available than the Fanatec counterpart. In that sense the TGT is a clear winner (although you can surely find someone in your circle that has a PC you could use, albeit, a true pain in the butt).
      The transducer. Oh my. That thing was a huge discovery and a monumental set up for inmersion like you say. I havent missed it one bit though, honestly. You get all the detail you could ever need in the DD. Its very different. Its smooth whilst somehow giving you that similar level of detail. Its weird and awesome. Hey, welcome! Both the TGT and the DD Pro come with table clamps included in the bundles. Technically, you can use both on a sturdy table but you have to be ware of the force feedback being too high and make your table move around (that’s for both units). As a starter it’s more of whether you prefer Fanatec or Thrustmaster and their respective environments.
      Thrustmaster is more plug and play than Fanatec. You need a PC to update drivers, etc on the Fanatec.
      If you want more help there are a bunch of GT related discord servers that are very active and most people are willing to help!
      Best of luck x

      @@afons thanks for your quick reply. Well, I'm a software engineer, so, dealing with firmwares is not an issue. I also noticed something the DD pedals have only 2 whilst the TGT has 3, is this a drawback? And in your honest opinion if the budget is not an issue will you go with the DD. I'm thinking to invest in something that will last, and you mentioned the DD feels more like future. So, I was heading for thrustmaster but after watching this video, I'm hesitant :)

      @@OrinocoGaming no problem!! You are correct, the pedal set does include the clutch pedal with thrustmaster, but unless you also get a shifter then the clutch pedal won’t really matter.
      Honestly, DD is the better tech. The TGT is top of the range of belt driven wheel bases, but the DD just feels more advanced. At least like the next step.
      You should still do what you feel is best for you, but for me fanatec is the more premium option for a reason.

    Does the load cell resistant feel the same on par/much better than trigger button on dual shock 5? Vibration & trigger resistant on Dual shock 5 is damm good on GT7.

    • @MichaelJP
      @MichaelJP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't compare a controller to a wheel, completely different immersion levels but the load cell just adds resistance for better braking precision, it's the wheel itself that translates the car's braking "feel".
      I had a quick play with GT7 through the B License tests on a controller and quit out of boredom. It was completely unimmersive, it just can't translate car/road feel like a wheel. DD Pro ordered the next day.

    I love thrustmaster but recently scored huge on buying a return pallet and it had a fanatec podium wheel the box was damaged but never opened, the rest of the stuff i sold except for that and a printer . So now my kids use my thrustmaster rig , and i use the podium

    Thanks for the honest review! But I’m not completely agree with the fact that they have the same price. The tgt2 official price is 749€, but you can easily find it for 650€, and during the Black Friday even 619 and 589€. The dd pro ‘base’ is sold for 700 euros without the booster and without the third pedal, the complete bundle (for an equal comparison with the thrustmaster) costs 970€ plus expedition. Than the fanatec, as a direct drive, is obviously better…but you have to spend much more 😊

      Where can you find the base WITHOUT the boost kit? I get updates from Fanatec and I've never seen the base itself.

    I am on the cusp of upgrading to a new wheel. My T500 is gasping for life. Upshifts take 3-4 taps and the wheel is loose at 12-6. Intervals are worn. I’m wanting a T-GT2 badly. I’ve got a GiveSendGo fundraiser in fact!

    I’m happy with my tgt II for now. Was the best option for me at the time, I’ve put a lot of miles on it in gt sport and acc. I’m interested to see what Thrustmaster offers in the DD market because the load cell pedals are great as is the SF1000 rim

      I bought the GT DD Pro and am not that impressed by it as so many TH-cam guys swear by it. It also has issues as I always seem to have with fanatec, always seem to be troubleshooting something. That’s why I’m thinking of going back to Thrustmaster, getting a T-GT 2 for GT7 and eventually will try out their DD offering.
      Ive learned not to go with all the hype and over-praise when a product like this releases, always take it with a grain of salt. Glad to hear you’re happy with your t-gt 2.

      @@BecksDrives it feels twice as good with GT7 I think I can really notice the drift control thing they say it has. Not so surprised about problems with fanatec or that so many people are giving great reviews. They seem to concentrate more on marketing than the actual product. How can they sponsor a whole GT championship when you couldn’t order any of their gear?

    • @BecksDrives
      @BecksDrives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@fraser7218 that’s another thing about fanatec, their product page for a particular item will say “available June 2022” or something ludicrous like that. If the product isn’t available, the estimated availability is always months away. Waiting 6 months just to order one item such as a steering wheel or other component makes me uneasy if I need a replacement. In comparison I could just go to several local retail stores who all stock Thrustmaster products. If I have issues I simply return it to the store and stock is generally very good.
