Super Mario Kart was one of those games my cousins and I would wreck each other on. Lots of rage-inducing fun times. Also rented Axelay and while i never beat it, it's still my favorite shooter to play, and I'm not a shooter guy.
I had hockey 93 as a kid. I actually played a fair bit of it. Later iterations of the game made it so you could create your own players. Playing a character that you created in a sports game felt really innovative for the time and I loved it
I didn't have too much nostalgia for "Super Mario Kart", since "Mario Kart 64" was the game that I played first when I was a kid, and I was kinda confused by the gameplay mechanics when I was able to play the SNES game, most notably the tendency to spin out whenever players are able to turn corners too tightly.
_Nintendo Power_ reviews were NEVER restrained; they just respected the five-point-oh scale system. *ANY* game that averaged a 4.0 or better from NP was generally understood to be a "Must Buy" title. SMK was no exception.
I imagine Game Boy boxes are hard to come by because not only did nobody keep those crappy cardboard boxes for any console, but on top of that, Game Boy was portable, and that made the boxes cumbersome. You wanted your Game Boy games accessible in a way that you could grab them and take them with you on the go, which meant having some sort of carrying case for them. So why keep the boxes when your games are in a convenient case? It would make a lot more sense to just get rid of the box, then have your games in the box, remove them all and stuff them into your case when you're leaving the house, then when you get home remove them from the case, and put them back in their boxes. At least with NES and SNES games, you'd only need one or two games out of the box at a time. Not your entire collection.
I assume the big reason NHLPA 93 got so popular is because it was the first successful attempt at making a "simulation" style hockey game, rather than arcade rules like Blades of Steel or Ice Hockey had done before it. This was a licensed 5-on-5 hockey game with real NHL players in it (but not the real teams) and it spawned a whole franchise for EA once NHL 94 came out. But as for how it plays compared to the games after it, it's just okay, nothing too special.
Even Megaman had a kart racer, with Rockman Battle & Chase. It's pretty good, but probably would have ran better if they used sprites instead of 3D models for literally everything.
i used to play toad for whatever reason and i just was always there at the end while all teh luigis would always wreck themselves out, luigi was my alt. my dumbass friend would always play bowser drive backwards and pretty much win every race
Axelay has my favourite Mode 7 graphics in the entire SNES catologue. Also Spy Vs. Spy I feel would be so much better if there was an overall goal and the traps were just a means to slow the other Spy from doing the same
There is, you have to find special items and reach the exit. I haven't played the Game Boy version, but Jared mentioned the briefcase, which on the NES version you needed to be able to store the four pieces of evidence. Without it, you could only carry one piece and could stash it in a spot, but if the other spy found it while you were looking, he'd have it. Otherwise, you'd find the briefcase, collect the evidence you stashed or search for the remaining pieces, try not to get killed by traps or the other spy, kill them if they have stuff you need, and reach the exit door before time runs out to win.
I still can't forgive Nintendo for releasing the last original Mario Kart game w/o a battle mode. No Nintendo, I don't want to buy it again on Switch just to get it w/ battle mode (and DLC which I bought for the original).
I'm sorry to the fans, but no sports games should make the top 100. Unless it's unique and innovative, like Mutant League or Baseball Wars, then it doesn't compare to the plethora of games that exist. Pick up a ball, get some skill, and play sports for sports ya lazy kids; games are for aliens and zombies and... Bubsy. I'll take Bubsy over sports games.

The last DLC wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently arrived and it has one of Bowser's race courses included from Super Mario Kart.

This! Essentially the same game 4 years in a row ala Madden, but improvements each year. I first played 95 then got 96 for Christmas and LOVED it.

LOVED Spy VS. Spy for NES! So much fun!! A regular rental as a kid. 🙂 Mischief Makers and Ikaruga are also some of my favorites!🎉

I honestly believe that battle mode was the most fun in Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64. I feel meh about it in later titles.
Watching Nit90s has made me realize something; I have never, in my entire life, bought a single game because of a commercial.
