What!? That's basically unprecedented in its time. A licensed game in the early 90's having actual creative input from the IP's creator? Holy turtles, Batman! Why do people keep picking Tecmo Bowl when it is clear that Tecmo Super Bowl is superior in every way, shape, or form? Tecmo Super Bowl is the one people still play today, has both NFL Players & Teams licenses, and, at the time it was made, had every NFL team.

NES is definitely one of the best gaming consoles ever. Some of my favorite games on the NES are Super Mario Bros 1,2 & 3, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Contra, Tetris, Blaster Master & Mega Man 2 just to name a few
*Tecmo SUPER Bowl* should have been here whether runner up or best sports game. Has the NFL license, players, stats, season mode, vs, exhibition. It was hands down the complete sports game for the NES.
The most heartbreaking part of this list is how many times Konami featured on it. It is really sad to see how greed has eroded the artistic ability of that once great gaming giant to such a degree that most gamers now await their releases with sceptism and uncertainty.
Punch Out!! is my personal favorite NES game. The technology was so limiting, yet the game excels in every category. It has superb gameplay, it oozes personality, such a strong experience on a tiny toy cartridge. It achieves so much with so little. It is timeless.
Punch Out alongside Super Mario Bros 3 are my top two favorite NES games. The game has a lot of personality and the characters all have a lot of, well, character. Could never beat it as a kid but returned to it in Highschool and finally kicked Mike Tyson's ass. As with a lot of Nintendo developed games at the time it really has a great difficulty curve that slowly ramps up from opponent to opponent.
It was a mind blowing arcade game in 1984. The home version was very well designed. It really holds up well even today. It’s very different from other NES titles and very unique.
Seems limited now, but then it was cutting edge compared to something like the Atari 2600. I grew up on Odyssey 2. When we seen NES we all jumped when Mario kept moving and the staged scrolled. It was like voodoo to us. We expaected it to look like SMB3s intro. We didn’t understand games could be like that yet.
i'm 42 going on 43. i was the 'nerd' as a kid. and my dad was into sci fi (trekkie here) but i have grown friends with gaming and now with online/discord i i have a best friend. they are far away from me but hopefully one day we meet. but we literally chat everyday. we met in an mmorpg. gaming brings people together. also genesis is dope, all systems are. but long story short: its amazing how gaming brings people together.
True. Butw, if i may ask, where does your friend live? I'm also uessing you may be a black person or what i call an Eminem ( white people acting black) due to your use of the word "dope" lol

I'm 41.. I remember getting my first Nintendo.. Both my parents are now gone. Getting old sucks. These vids bring me back in time. I had a great childhood.. Horrible adulthood..
I'm 41, as well, and while I still have my Dad, my Mom has passed. She played the NES as much as us. Her favorite game was Castlevania. I'm sorry for your loss.
I got my Nes and Master System in 1986. Most kids around me got one or the other by 1986'ish. I believe the Nes really wasn't available to all markets in the US until early 1987. While the Nes launched in 1985 the video game market was dead in the US. Nintendo had to jump through a lot of hoops just to get retailers to carry it at all. After the Nes sold well in its two test markets (New York City and Los Angeles) Nintendo began releasing it solely in other very big markets. Mine came from Miami, Florida which is why I got it so early (same for the Master System). It really depended on where you live. After the Nes and Master System things got a whole lot better for everyone as the industry was thriving. My mother found my Sega Genesis in 1989 with no problems at all.
Dude, you ain't lying. I can't believe it's been 37 years since I first saw the NES and today. Almost 4 decades and it still feels like it could have been last week.
Dude, no RC Pro Am in racing? One of the favorites in our household. My dad would come home from work in the morning when we would be going to school and he would play Pro Am. Fun times.
I always got my butt handed to me with RCPA as a kid and could never master the steering. I will say that I played Super Off-Road in the arcade and enjoyed the heck out of it more than the NES version. I think that it worked really nicely with the pedal and steering wheel, an experience that you just don't get on the NES.
The NES has some of the best platformers in gaming history: Castlevania 3, Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom.
@@jasonlee7816 Graphics aren't everything you know. Gameplay, replay value, and music can play a major part in someone's joy for games. Don't be the person to piss in the punch that everyone else is trying to enjoy.
Great retrospective. Getting an NES on Christmas 1988 was the happiest moment of my young life, and building a collection from flea market/thrift store finds in the late 90s/early 00s was another amazing experience. Its so true that you could play a variety of games back then by borrowing among friends. Some of my favorites that weren't mentioned here are Blaster Master, Metal Storm, and Magic of Scheherazade. You seem to have similar taste in games to me, so I'll bet you would like any of those.
I hear you man. I was lucky enough to be able to recreate that magic with a switch for my son. I even did it at the same age I was when I got my nes. Little so and so just broke my switch but he still has his…
@@Blas4ublasphemy Yeah I was expecting RC Pro Am to feature in the racing category! I saw a boxed NES/ROB bundle at my local retro store recently for $750. I didn't even know that bundle existed. Somebody ended up buying it. Crazy prices these days.
Even at that price, I’d still consider it an investment. It’s not as though something like that will go down in value and it could easily be resold at the same price or more down the road.
@@RobotacularRoBob ...Not familiar with this specific bundle, but if you die, I could see clueless family members unloading NES games at a garage sale for a $1 each, lol.
One of my best friends had that bundle. His dad purchased it for him for Christmas in '86. Along with ROB, it also included two spinning disks, a light gun, and the games Gyromite and Duck Hunt. Damn, those were the days.
@@RobotacularRoBobit absolutely can go down in value. The market fluctuates as it is and something is only worth what a person is willing to pay for it.
Lots of great choices. I'll always have a soft spot for the old NES because it was the first game system I ever played because my brother had one when I was a little kid and didn't really know anything about gaming then. If it wasn't for that grey box I don't know if I'd be a gamer right now
I crawled out of the womb begging for an NES! And all these years later I think my greatest NES achievement is 3 million points on Contra, no Konami code. I used the code and game genie as a kid all the time, but now I'm good enough to beat the game multiple times on a single continue. Super C is much harder for me as I need to use all the Continues to finish the game once! Great video as always, Mr. Sega Lord X!!
Man I recorded them through my radio/cassette player when I was like 8/9. I used to listen to the stage music going to sleep at night back in the late 80's😂 hahaha. Love all the stage music from Mega Man 2.
I imported the Nintendo way back in 1983. Games like Excite back and Mario Bros blew me away and where a huge upgrade over the 2600. Crazy to think it's now over 40 years old.
I feel like it's been literal years since I've seen an NES video where I didn't already know of all the games in it, so seeing The Gaurdian Legend and The Krion Conquest was pretty awesome, they look awesome.

NES was my first console, I remember getting the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt pack and having a blast with it, even though I was pretty young to know what the hell I was doing most of the time. I ended up getting more games over time, but the games that had a special place in my heart were Metroid, TMNT 3, Adventure Island, and Dragon Spirit.
Ninja Gaiden 1, Super Mario Bros. 3, Double Dragon II and a few others are my 5 favorite games on the NES. Plus, it also had amazing hidden gems like Felix The Cat and, my personal favorite, Guardian Legend.

I had to beg for 2 years til I got my nes in 2nd grade about 1987. I look back on how innocent times were back then. Everything now is soo amped up compared to then.
I had some of those games. Super Mario 3 and teenage mutant ninja turtles were the best. Duck tales was an amazing game, though it was bought for me just because I liked the cartoon. Makes me remember as a kid getting close but not beating these games. Got to the last level or the space level in duck tales. Got to level 8 of Mario 3 and had to use saved P-wings to clear it. I know I did complete TMNT 2-4, never got far in #1, but I think that’s most people
You make a good point about the role NES (and other systems) played in building friendships. Somehow that had never occurred to me. To this day I can still remember which one of my friends had which games, or some of the times we stayed up late trying to beat certain games
I beat ninja gaiden on the NES virtual console on my switch back while i had my nintendo switch online subscription, thanks for including it & Super Mario 3! (California...)
nobody talks about freedom force on nes, that game def slips under the radar. I knew the game cause my dad would talk about it cause relatives had it when i was too young to understand/play nes and he would talk about it, i later got it in my collection from funco land.

The Master System's 35th Anniversary in America? I had such high hopes for it, and it never saw limit pushers until it was already discontinued by SEGA, a pattern that would repeat itself for the next 15 years until no one would invest in the crazy company.

Dragon Spirit is not at the top of the list for most people when it comes to shooters but the NES port is quite good. Big detailed bosses, a variety of colorful enemies and great music. They even threw in some pseudo scaling in. It is quite an underrated gem IMO.
The Track and Field series and Super Spike V-Ball were some of my favorite sports games to this day. The Punisher was one of my personal faves too. So many classics & good list!

Sega Lord X's videos are so top quality. I wouldn't watch a 33 minute gaming review video from most other channels, but I knew this was going to be worth it.
A lot of people throw dirt on Metal Gear on the NES. I know, I know, the MSX version is far superior. But this was my first outing with Snake, and I had a blast playing it.
Yup. That's how I feel. You can retroactively shit on it because another version was better, but at the time it was still one heck of a ride on the NES.

I was 16 when the NES came out. I was so wrapped up in Apple IIe gaming that I missed out on consoles until the Genesis, then it was mostly for Madden. It’s crazy the good games I missed out on.
I can rember my aunt telling my mom about how addictive Tetris was, she was in her mid 30s at the time but that game almost literally killed her. Not sleeping not eating and some times playing 16 hours a day and wore the skin off her fingers and none of this is a joke.

The Zeldas, the Marios, the Mega Mans, the Contras, the Castlevanias, peak Natsume, the Final Fantasy releases, the peak Sunsoft games, and the beloved standouts. Also, for Western players on a Sega Master System with no FM synth, the NES sound chip produced some wonderful 8-bit tunes that pummelled the SMS music. Inventive ways to produce sweet drum tracks on NES, which was totally impossible with SMS stock sound chip. NES music -- Batman, Konami's games, Journey to Silius, and have you heard Silver Surfer (poor game, crazy Tim Follin music)?
SMS audio chip eats the NES audio chip for breakfast, lunch, dinner it doesn’t matter what NES game was developed (made) NES games still sound awful, crap, dreadful, garbage, horrible, rubbish, shit, terrible
@@jasonlee7816Without the Mark III revision's FM chip, the SMS lacked any impact drums or percussion. In 99% of SMS games (sans FM synth assist), there's no low end, no kick bass, and the snare sounds like someone tapping a pencil on a table. NES games like Ninja Gaiden, Super C, and Batman annihilate the music of SMS games. Punchy, pounding drums and low end to drive action games. This is coming from a SMS-raised Sega fan. It was clear to me even as a child that the SMS had the graphical advantages, but inept sound. Sega didn't update the hardware with a FM synth module because everything was fine and great with its stock sound capabilities. It's because it was very limited. Look at it this way - people do mod porting of games like Mega Man 2, Castlevania, to the Master System. They really try to push the visuals and sound. In every case, side-by-side the original NES version of the same music demolishes the SMS version.
Aren't games such as Super Off Road representing a far off camera filming the race from afar, thus, making the cars look small, while games such as Micro Machines the opposite? I just found it a bit funny you mentioning the trucks being small as toys, but I don't think it's the case. I didn't grow up with the NES, but did with the SMS and MD, still I find the NES, specially the Famicom fascinating.
I remember renting TMHT2 (yes, I'm in Europe) and me and my friends were struck by how 'beautifully drawn' it was. That's what we called good graphics. We also didn't know about the arcade original and we were ten. I would add to the arcade ports that Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Galaga and Bubble Bobble on NES were pretty stellar as well.
I was 9 years old when I got my NES Deluxe. The year prior I had stayed with a cousin of mine at his dad's house...we went to visit one of his friends whose dad worked overseas. That was my first experience with a Famicom. The following year....both of our moms drove 4 states away to pick us each up a NES Deluxe during the limited release. Although I had played video games before....starting with the Atari 2600...I only considered myself a "gamer" when I played the NES for the first time.
Punch Out as the number 1 sports games is a solid pick but yeah, Tecmo Bowl over Super Bowl was an interesting choice. Both were really good but Super Bowl took it to another level.
Was surprised to see two Batman games on here, and one taking the top Platformer spot. Tried it out, definitely a good game, up there with Kirby's Adventure, Bubble Bobble, Bionic Commando, and Metroid. Thanks for the recommendation! And for the sports games, Tecmo Super Bowl really improves on the original in every way
I was unable to get the NES in Christmas 1988, because they were all sold out. So my Dad got me the Sega Master system instead, w/the free Double Dragon offer. I had to wait Christmas of 89 to get the NES. I enjoyed Double Dragon II, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Castlevania III.

Great video. Thanks For strategy games I would recommend Archon and Mule. Both look pretty unassuming but are magic when playing with a friend or friends.
I thought I knew everything about the NES, but I still didn't know Freedom Force. You surprised me once more! Out of the light gun games I've played, Gumshoe is my favorite, since it's basically a platformer that is played differently
Awesome approach to a NES list, and great choices as well. My favorite game is either Castlevania III or Dragon Quest III. Also I love how many hidden gems are on the console, especially the Japanese RPGs not released here, because there’s a lot of them.
I remember when I was a kiddo my mother drove me to every toy store to find the first Double Dragon, it was impossible to find. Aww the good ole days. 😁
Im so pumped you put jackal. I was obsessed with that game. Jackal, Gunsmoke, Ninja Turtles Arcade ,Mario 3, Blaster Master,Rygar, Punchout and Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers were my absolute favorites. I still remember leaving the nintendo pause all day while i went to school so i wouldnt have to start my game over. I just shut the tv off so my mother didnt know.
I got my NES in 1994 at Funcoland. For $45 my mom got a used NES, 2 controllers, a zapper, a cartridge cleaner and SMB/Duck Hunt. I remember it was a lot of fun until I got step siblings and then they took it over and I rarely ever got to play anymore. This is a big part of why I never got into video games to the same degree as my peers. I still like to play games, but I don’t have that nostalgia for specific games that a lot of my friends played. The Genesis was my favorite from my childhood though. I loved playing sonic and streetfighter. And I thought the Genesis controller was a lot more comfortable to use over a long period of time.
I might be a lone voice here but I LOVE Marble Madness! Intricate courses, killer soundtrack, awesome SFX, great visuals for the period, it has it all!

Got my NES for Christmas 1986 or '87. The first game I bought was Jackal. Sold it along with 35 games for $220 to fund the aquisition of a SNES. Standouts in my collection included: Karnov, Rygar, Double Dragon, DD2, Metroid, R/C Pro-Am, Castlevania, Simon's Quest, Ninja Gaiden, Bubble-Bobble, Contra, Adventure of Link and more I can't recall at the moment. The NES provided alot of entertainment for me and my pals. Trading games (sometimes 1 for 2, 1 for 3), borrowing games, renting games. Getting that console for Christmas is likely part of the reason my brothers hate me and always have.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

NES is definitely one of the best gaming consoles ever. Some of my favorite games on the NES are Super Mario Bros 1,2 & 3, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Contra, Tetris, Blaster Master & Mega Man 2 just to name a few
So much fun
Loved Metroid 👍
Hell of a combo there 🤟
SM bros 3, Punch out, TNMNT 2, Contra
Double Dragon was pretty awesome...
Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania trilogies
*Tecmo SUPER Bowl* should have been here whether runner up or best sports game. Has the NFL license, players, stats, season mode, vs, exhibition. It was hands down the complete sports game for the NES.

The most heartbreaking part of this list is how many times Konami featured on it. It is really sad to see how greed has eroded the artistic ability of that once great gaming giant to such a degree that most gamers now await their releases with sceptism and uncertainty.
Yeah, when you saw Konami (or Ultra Games) on an NES box, you knew you were getting a quality game more often than not.
The NES, SNES and sometimes Mega Drive was Konami at their very best.
@@Adamtendo_player_1I agree wholeheartedly.
It’s normal, look at movie studios that aren’t even around. Record labels etc, the legacy will always be there.

Punch Out!! is my personal favorite NES game.
I remember jotting down the password between each fight. Man those were the days.
Just picked it up at a pawn store for $25. (Along with double dragon) both are really great .

Damn, same age and same theme..... getting old does suck.
That really sucks. Sorry to hear that.
Well, things can only get better from here.
I'm 41, as well, and while I still have my Dad, my Mom has passed. She played the NES as much as us. Her favorite game was Castlevania.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I got my NES Christmas of 87, one year before most of the kids in my town. Everyone seemed to get it in 88. Jackal is amazing. I still play it.
Really? Everyone in my town got them in 86
I got my Nes and Master System in 1986.
I got NES in 1986 and then I got TurboGrafx 16 in 1989
Everybody in my area got it in 87. But it is a smaller populated area.
@@bdunk914Turbografx-16 was on another whole level back then. I loved many of the games and music released on the system .
Dude, you ain't lying. I can't believe it's been 37 years since I first saw the NES and today. Almost 4 decades and it still feels like it could have been last week.
If I came up with a list it would be really close to this . I loved Life Force and Double Dragon 2 growing up . Good times back then .
Dude, no RC Pro Am in racing? One of the favorites in our household. My dad would come home from work in the morning when we would be going to school and he would play Pro Am. Fun times.
R.C. Pro-Am gets my vote for best racing game, with Super Off-Road runner up.
@@FFVison I absolutely agree with you about the differences between Super Off-Road arcade vs. NES!
The NES has some of the best platformers in gaming history: Castlevania 3, Mega Man 2, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Shatterhand, Vice: Project Doom.
Vice Project Doom never gets the attention it deserves. Shatterhand is pretty up there too.
Powerblade 1 and 2 could go on that list as well.
Vice: Project Doom was one of my favorite games and I almost never hear anyone mention it
Such a perfect list. No need for Powerblade
@@JopieHaargel Power Blade 1 and especially 2 are great games, but I don't know if I'd put them on the top of the system's library.

Super Mario Bros 3 and Kirbys Adventure were my favourite games on the NES. Late releases that really pushed the system.

It was one of the first bundles back in the day. I didn't know anyone who owned it and only seen it in my Nintendo Power magazines back then.
I used the code and game genie as a kid all the time, but now I'm good enough to beat the game multiple times on a single continue.

it doesn’t matter what NES game was developed (made)
NES games still sound awful, crap, dreadful, garbage, horrible, rubbish, shit, terrible
Tecmo Super Bowl outclasses the original Tecmo Bowl in every way... Have you not played it?
Regardless, great video! We love your work!
I used "miniature" to describe only how things looked on the screen. The actually game was meant to be actual dirt track racing.
Need a best of the SNES.
Tecmo super bowl most definitely the number 1 sports game. Waaaayyyy better than tecmo bowl
That's a good one too.

Starts at 2:20
i love the way you make compilations like this. you're the only one who knows how to properly categorize everything
I thought the same about Jackal. That game was my childhood. And Rygar was the first NES game I ever saw. What a remarkable system NES was.
I miss being a kid talking to all my buddies on the bus and playground about all these games. Everything we did was all new so it was so awesome.
My favorite games all mega Man,contra, ninja gaiden trilogy ,double Dragon 2, Castlevania 3 and Batman returns OF joker
This format makes for the most agreeable list of top nes games on you tube. What a fantastic list.
I'm with you, Marble Madness was a great game. I just remember it getting difficult pretty quickly and not having many, if any, continues. My only gripe with this list is that RC Pro Am has to be the best racing game!
@@_JellyDonut_ Plus don't forget the terrible controls! My marble would always go off the side, or fall from a great height and shatter! I hardly ever made it past Stage 2
@@SteadyEddie1983 Yeah definitely. The great thing about emulators is now we can go back and use save-state to beat all the games we never could back in the day :)
Nice list. Shadowgate has the best music in the NES library and really add to the athmosphere.
It brings tears to my eyes seeing island boy or super island boy. I literally never liked the game but my friend in the third grade left it over my house (I'm looking at you Ian Hougan) and I still play it to this day. It's just such a weird and challenging game I love it!
Adventure Island.
Adventure island?
@@BobbyHo2022 idk why I still call it... I've been doing it since i was a kid
OMG!! You nailed each and every category for me. Fantastic work! I may have changed Rygar (which I loved!!) with Blaster Master (not 100% if this was an NES exclusive though). Still can't argue putting Rygar in that position. Spot on video sir!!
I grew up (and live) in North Central Missouri, friends had SEGA and they were relatively common, but most pepole I know had and NES, I had a hand me down NES at the time up until sometime in 1999, then I baught a N64 at the end of its life from a sale when I worked at wal-mart. However in 1992 I got my first PC (also a hand-me-down) and have been mainly a PC guy since, though I do collect and enjoy older consoles.
The NES gives me quite find memories.
This was video was so much fun to watch! The NES is my all time favorite gaming console. So many, many awesome, wonderful memories playing it when I was a kid. The first gaming console that I ever played was an Atari 2600, and the first console that I owned was a Colecovision. Those two systems were a lot of fun, but the NES just did it for me on so many levels. I still play it often today.
I agree with Lifeforce. One of my all time favorite shooters on any system.
And I'll say this, super Mario Bros 2 walked so super Mario Bros 3 could take off into the stratosphere.
