@@KitePhone I really want to build myself one too. It is so cool. Actually it would be amazing if this phone had Linux working. Man, please retrieve this project as a Linux phone. I can help as I'm working in a Linux distro team named as Merkür Foundation.
I know this video is 6 years old but this is the first time I have seen this and I am amazed that this did not catch on. I would love to see this reintroduced as it would really attract attention from people like me who are pro "Right to repair"
Wonderful. Probably the first open mobile platform with full fledged compute, connect and location functionality. Developers can build rich mobile and IOT solutions through this platform.
I don't understand why this hasn't caught on. I haven't seen this, if I have I was too distracted to hold on the memory. I hope it sets fires. Soo appealing .
Probably has something to do with the major phone manufacturers not wanting us to be able to repair phones, but to just have to buy new ones when components fail. Like the non removable battery.
to be honest I had 2 cellphones with problems that made them trash. I kill one and use its parts for the other. I was so happy it was my first time doing something like that and when it works I was even happier. I think we should keep the values of keeping our products and fixing them.
This is awesome.. !!! Liked the way the different possible variants of phones were shown. This product is going to open a whole new world of personalised smartphones. Great work !!!
This is stellar and a shame that I’m only hearing of it now! What’s been happening with this project? I’m super interested in building one of my own and hacking some of my own functionality into it.
Is it possible to install FreePBX/Asterisk and use Kite as a GSM/Voip gateway? For example Raspberry on FreePBX OS, with installed GSM module would work perfectly for that. On the other hand in mainstream phones it is not possible to intercept the audio stream from-to the GSM module and redirect it to installed applications. How does Kite work for this specific issue?
Braille input is a smart choice Maybe have a Braille output too (one that at least works like Tacttoo) I'm hoping translucent screens take off That might really bring modular devices into the mobile/wearable era I'd have a combo of color LCD, color epaper, and color AMOLED Sunday, September 17, 2023 CE, 20:13 EDT
This would be great for people who are sick of small phones that are glass coated slipping out of your hands. And people who drive commercial vehicles that want something they can see as well as feel while in use.
Very interesting. I do hope you'll be successful! Would it be possible to implement *hardware* switches for turning off camera, microphone, and GPS? That way you could brand it 'Privacy Phone' too.
I think he meant so they were quick and easy to switch on and off. Opening up the phone each time isn't quick. I'm not sure how quick it would be to erase and restore the GPS/modem compared to a flicking a physical switch.
@@rupert274 The easiest way to do it is to cut off power from modules :D Camera? Shut down power line, there is no camera anymore. Microphone? The same way. GPS / modem? Firstly, you need to make them a separated modules from the rest of device, and then use some switches to cut the power and signal from them when you want to be "incognoto mode". The biggest challenge is to put half of dozen switches somewhere in the smartphone to protect them from switching randomly during everyday use...
I wish to get a kit for my old moto g 2nd gen, the buttons are damaged so will be cool to build a new housing and put a bigger battery and new switches for the power and volume buttons.
Is it possible to make one with a electronic id card reader - this is needed to activate the device, and need to stay there. it could also be a micro sim, provided states gives this as an option - and only LTE connection? I hate electronic identification app, that you need a smartphone, and pay a normal sim connection, in an open-source community, it should be free connection, just a finger-print reader, and few apps, like ID, National Health service, tax service, bank service, personal wallet to make payments, passport service. and Global LTE provided by your country of origin valid globally. No phone calls functionality, but maybe some emergency calls only. What do you think?
If 3d Printers were much higher in proliferation, I could really see this spreading out, but don't give up this Idea has merit, however, maybe you should focus on small batch production and offering the kits in batches using the sales of one batch to fund the next, as well as take orders on several 'models' of common setups for the Kite Phone, at of course a slight premium since your team would be assembling them. Even in smaller sales numbers you can still turn a decent profit. This is definitely an enthusiast product, which makes it a little difficult to use kickstarter to fund.
How brother I was shocked that made a diy smartphone and building one it so amazing 👏 I was wishing to build one for myself But it costs expensive. $$$$
This is good progress! But if I'm gonna invest in something modular, upgradeable, Where are the upgrade options that *Matter?* Upcoming Kite2 is based on Snapdragon 625, offering 300mbits/sec download... My LG G5 is almost 2 generations behind, on the snapdragon 820. It sports 600Mbits/sec download. A fully 2 year old design outclasses the kite that isn't even available yet. Where's the upgradeability? Where's the chance to migrate? Where is my chance to be on the cutting edge?
excuse me sir i really want to know how you make this very great project i have searching 1year for this kind of project please reply i want to learn. P.S. you are very great i liked and subscribed
Idea is great. But the specs... Really 1Gb with an upgrade to 2? You should start with three! Next, internal storage. Having 16 Gb means you will get very little amount of applications which you really can use. 32Gb as a minimum should be put. Android 5? Really? In a year or two you will have almost no modern applications which will actually run on it. It is waaaaay outdated. At least 7 should be considered. Okay, screen is a good one. Processor is a very slow one, the performances is something an end user will definitely not be satisfied with. So, in general. If you provide so low-end specs, you will get a very outdated device only for tech enthusiasts who will just play a couple of hours with it and leave it on a table, just because it is unusable or inconvenient. Upgrade the specs, and you will be good to go.
He did something google could do(or didn't want people to have) :D

what if it's just a presentation with modified actual smart phones inside? Seems to be a lot of development work already done, I doubt that.
I think the LED badge would look really nice with diffusion plastic

Can I remove or modify the OS completely too?
How do I pay for the parts and where

Would it be possible to implement *hardware* switches for turning off camera, microphone, and GPS? That way you could brand it 'Privacy Phone' too.
Camera can be easily removed by the user. Same for microphone. To turn off GPS and modem, one could erase the Android modem partition.
I think he meant so they were quick and easy to switch on and off. Opening up the phone each time isn't quick. I'm not sure how quick it would be to erase and restore the GPS/modem compared to a flicking a physical switch.
