So I’m an industrial/residential electrician and for some reason electronics still just blow my mind. It’s amazing what you can do with stuff like this.
I remember when I was 10 years old and the DS Lite came out...I wanted one so bad but wasnt allowed to have one because of strict parents... XD I had a can of these and imagined it was a ds. :( Eventually I got the real ds but omg.. seeing this video was like my childhood imagination coming to life. hahahaha. This is awesome. XD
You think that was bad. Growing up I had Gameboy, parents didn't let me have that so I imagine I had one on a cereal box even drawn buttons on it. Yet what sucked my game was always frozen so I had to deal with it. Cereal can bee a good way to start your morning.
Used to pull sheets of paper with a single frame of Minecraft that I drew through a little box made from popsicle sticks and glue. It didn't end up working quite the way I thought
I've put 3 of these together.. .Noticed he makes no mention of what type of solder to use. My experience has always been....less spatter, the better. Use leaded solder. Keeps your PCBs much cleaner looking.
Hey guys, sorry for the late reply. I've already sold all 3 I made....Well, sold 2, kept one. :) I sold the other two for about $150 each. The parts alone cost me about 120 including shipping.
What type of solder? 60 Sn - 40 Pb is OK. 63-37 is better. Pretty much, the thinner the better. Small, low wattage iron, preferably anti-static and temperature controlled.
This is some James Bond 007 type shit! I really enjoyed this! I’ve got a couple of nephews with birthdays coming up and your video is going to make me the Coolest Uncle on the Planet, thank you!!!!
RED RUM have you ever heard of the saying “It’s the thought that counts”? Whether he spends $5 or $50 on these, it’ll be the coolest thing his nephews get purely because it’s a video game that doesn’t look like a video game. I’d bet they can’t wait to break open their altoids every chance they get. I’m not even a kid and I want one, and if I received one, price isn’t the thing that comes to mind. Mostly “how in the hell did they make this” and “what can I do with it”. Seems you’ve had the misfortune of being spoiled as a kid and think everything’s value is based on its price.
Little me found this video long ago, from then I’ve began to develop an interest into retro gaming and electronics. I’m so happy this got recommended to me again. It’s nostalgic. You’re also the reason that I am studying in engineering too. Thank you.

@@n3tw0rk_3rr0r Keep trying. Remeber that soldering is not like painting. The solder only sticks if both surfaces are heated. Use solder with 40% lead and a real rosin flux core. The flux is what makes solder flow and stick well. When it evaporates, the solder becomes like really viscous honey and won't stick to anything.
wermy hey, before the guide i was testing if everything connected correctly, and i stuck the screen cable without cutting it, and its a bit damaged. Do you think it might still work? if not, can you direct me to where i can buy a screen like that?
wermy make a real life pip boy that would be cool or try if you can.if you don't know what a pip boy is it's a mini computer that holds on your arm it's from fallout just look it up
kingrrezart123 its not as hard as you think, you can use a external battery pack and a USB OTG cable for the sound card, and the soldering is pretty easy with a little bit of practice.
I have *no* idea what a MintyPi is, but I find this video fascinating and adore both the use of the Altoid's tin, as well as the overall blocky aesthetic that comes with it. It's 3am and I am arguing if I should sleep or see this video through. Edit: Chose sleep, but woke up and finished the video anyways. This is really cool! I wasn't aware that this sort of thing existed, but now that I do, it's impressive how much work goes into this.
Soldering is actually pretty easy to get decent enough at to work on electronics projects. Just practice on something that's not important (an old, broken, game controller or a circuit board from some old broken electronic device) until you've got clean, controlled solders so you don't ruin anything. It took me a few weeks of practice to be comfortable working on expensive PCBs, but it's not impossible to learn, even with no experience at all. It IS worth buying a decent soldering tool and decent solder though. Makes it way easier to control what you're doing.
I applaud you as this was a very concise video about you building a game that was conceived by you or more designers and came together almost flawlessly. Good luck on you'd next venture!
Just so you know, Always heat the joint for a few seconds, then apply the solder. It is a typical mistake to immediately apply solder and iron tip at the same time, but that is wrong. You want the solder to flow to the contacts to make good connections. It is also highly recommended to squirt some flux in all those connections first. That will help even more to make the contact joints very good.
I love the random cat in the middle of the build XD One tiny modification I would make to this: put the power switch inside the tin. I can imagine this being accidentally turned on in your pocket from the switch getting bumped
JoshuaSr33 Well you'd have to save everything every time you wanted to close it and take it somewhere and every time you opened it you'd have to wait for it too boot.
Big Clive ended up playing yesterday on my TV I've been obsessed since with electric stuff and got a crazy urge to solder, something I've not done since high school circa 95 been thinking I need a hobby, I think I've found one. Looks fun to me.
When I was a kid, we used to take tin cans, fill them with water, freeze them, & then poke holes with nails to make lanterns. Maybe that might be a decent way to prevent bending the case for interface holes? Either that, or 3D print an internal bracing jig. A template could also be used to help with mounting the screen, etc... Awesome build, I want one, and maybe I'll try making a brace or something =)
If you want to remove that tape, take a hair dryer to the back of the tin and it'll loosen it up btw :) That tape is pretty standard and funny enough removing it is generally involving some heat.
Will we be able to buy a completed mintypi from you? I've got mad respect for the work you do but I don't really have the skills or will to build one myself.
I have to say, I was in awe the entire video....from start to finish. Pretty awesome build for sure! I would totally geek out if I had built one of those. Good job!!
I'd make two and then give them to one of my artistic friends to paint them and they can keep one. Not just to make it look cool but so people would stop asking me for mints when I take it out.
You're an excellent teacher; I know very little about the Pi or computer components, but I feel like I could do this with the parts list and just copying what you did. Excellent video; now I want to get into this stuff, it's 😎!
I was looking forward to making it, but I don't have a few things or enough of a motivation to get them. Is there anything different I can do for certain parts like the saughtering ones?
There's something so oddly relaxing about watching stuff like this, and you learn stuff.. neat :) I want something like that, for sure, but I'm lazy and all too dumb to do something like that lol. But I think you need to work on some kind of locking mechanism to keep the lid on the tin from flapping around while you play. Last thing you wanna do is accidentally shut the tin down on your thumbs when you're playing.
Silicone coated wire is so wonderful. Only problem is it exposed how horrible plastic coated feels :P As a bonus, silicone won't melt if it gets too hot, making it capable of carrying more current than it's gauge would imply. Also very nice. Much better than the fiberglass braided wires traditionally used for carrying high currents.
BE WARNED! The drill hole guide/template is a separate solo piece on Sopmod, NOT included with other 3D printed parts package. I have placed another order for the piece and since it is a Christmas present my son and I are building together, I hope it gets here soon. Especially since the shipping is $5.00! I deal with shipping on a daily basis in my business and for a part of that size and weight, it better be next day! Hook it up, Wermy.
He doesn't, but I can make one for you. It will be 180$ for the parts, and I'll charge you 20$ extra for labor. It's a really good price for custom parts, so @ me here or message me on TH-cam messages.
@@dhruvjat8150 Hey. Wondering if you could make me one. I don't know the best way for communication but I can send you my discord username if you want.
Not sure i got the point of the soundcard... PAM8403 costs a few cent and you can keep a bunch around, it's BTL so it can make small speakers scream, and you can just feed it off the PWM audio output of the SBC. Oh and it runs in a wide voltage range, 3V is just fine. Even ye olde LM386 runs off 3V just fine, though delivering a rather abysmal voltage swing... but still more than the PCM2704 soundcard. Yeah i know the spec says it's 4V and up, but you know, this is not mass production, these are hobby projects, and in 99% of cases, the spec is a bit too pessimistic. As a word of note, the battery that you have there isn't going to catch fire if you just short it out, the DW01 chip on its terminal board is the protection, actually it does a lot more, like overcharge, overdischarge protection... but in general it's a good advice to be careful.
While that is true pwm audio isn't good quality, it has white noise introduced by the cpu and usb audio is crystal clear no noise introduced, also if you arent using usb for anything else usb audio is a good path to go down.
I made 3 (1 for me and 2 for Christmas gifts) and each time the parts cost $180 so I'll do it for $200 if you pay for shipping (unless you live in Pennsylvania)
CautiousAphid I would totally pay you to do that for me! I’m in the process of shipping out for Air Force basic though so I would have to wait a couple months

You're an excellent teacher; I know very little about the Pi or computer components, but I feel like I could do this with the parts list and just copying what you did. Excellent video; now I want to get into this stuff, it's 😎!
I have been waiting a month for this video!
Hi
...
I was looking forward to making it, but I don't have a few things or enough of a motivation to get them. Is there anything different I can do for certain parts like the saughtering ones?
HEHE I AM TRUE BLEU POKEMANZ Sodering not Saughtering
soldering
Soldering, the L is silent
I like how all these replys are how to spell Soldering. Yet no one answered his question. And im not gonna either. Lolooloololol
Involuntary Wireslaughter
There's something so oddly relaxing about watching stuff like this, and you learn stuff.. neat :) I want something like that, for sure, but I'm lazy and all too dumb to do something like that lol. But I think you need to work on some kind of locking mechanism to keep the lid on the tin from flapping around while you play. Last thing you wanna do is accidentally shut the tin down on your thumbs when you're playing.
Silicone coated wire is so wonderful. Only problem is it exposed how horrible plastic coated feels :P
As a bonus, silicone won't melt if it gets too hot, making it capable of carrying more current than it's gauge would imply. Also very nice. Much better than the fiberglass braided wires traditionally used for carrying high currents.
I might actually do this lol. Great video man. Looking forward to more projects. (cough cough mini arcade cabinet)
it's been done many times already
I don't intend on making this but I really enjoyed watching you do it : )
school field trip "ok kids fuck you no electronics on the buss!" me: "bitch thees altoids"
a person is going to get shot
i eat my Game
Hook it up, Wermy.
thanks for the info
I’m not even building one of these. I just like watching people build stuff like this.
is it possible to open up the side to use the hdmi port if needed or is there no room
I want to know too.
you know what I was thinking that I was thinking how is it possible to fit a Raspberry Pi just into a little tiny Altoids tin
SHADOWxWOLF+ i don't see why not
gross a furry
Abradolf Lincler Wrong video section lol
Hey wermy how much are all of the parts and also do you sell them
Jackson Leroux it would be illegal to sell a complete one
Pro Gamer It would be perfectly legal if it was sold with everything but the software.
Jonathan Taylor oh shit i read that wrong lol
Pro Gamer no... it would only be illegal if he sold it with roms and emulators... he can sell the whole kit but those
Adenkane Isme i said i read that wrong lol
This never ceases to amaze me.
Could you just put out the links for parts and 3D print plans, also I can’t cut this holes😕
tbh i want on of these to sneak onto my field trip in april lmao
Did you do it?
Been 2 years, so did you?

I came across this video by accident but by the end of it was very impressed keep up the good work ....................AMAZING!!!
do you sell these already made
He doesn't, but I can make one for you. It will be 180$ for the parts, and I'll charge you 20$ extra for labor. It's a really good price for custom parts, so @ me here or message me on TH-cam messages.
I want one
just checking up to see if this guy still makes them
@@dhruvjat8150 Hey. Wondering if you could make me one. I don't know the best way for communication but I can send you my discord username if you want.
@@xandersdm sure we can link up, but I'm not building them at the moment.
Teacher in class,
Heyy what r u doing??
Just eating
Oh give me one hahahahahaha
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
This is some high level nerdery. Very impressive.
And I thought *I* was smart.
I'm not smart. I just collect things as i go along, and i've been around for a long enough time, like more than a couple decades.
Siana Gearz I
While that is true pwm audio isn't good quality, it has white noise introduced by the cpu and usb audio is crystal clear no noise introduced, also if you arent using usb for anything else usb audio is a good path to go down.
Konnor Bowen why did I read you comment in a shaggy voice?
How much would you charge to build and ship me a MintyPi?
I made 3 (1 for me and 2 for Christmas gifts) and each time the parts cost $180 so I'll do it for $200 if you pay for shipping (unless you live in Pennsylvania)
CautiousAphid I would totally pay you to do that for me! I’m in the process of shipping out for Air Force basic though so I would have to wait a couple months
Austin Martin thank you for your service!
@@cautiousaphid4072 if I come back here in a few months would you still make and sell me one?
@@cautiousaphid4072 that's a great deal!

Your audio production quality is fantastic, by the way. Nice work!
This is awesome! I want one, but I'm afraid I'll make a mistake I I build it myself. >_
